Octopus month has morphed seamlessly into Multispecies month here at RtB, bringing with it not only last week's piece on chimpanzees, but also this sparkling conversation about all sorts of multi-species communities. Recorded live in front of an audience of writing students and introduced by Brandeis physicist Matthew Headrick, it features Patricia Alvarez Astacio, an anthropologist and filmmaker. She has made a film about her work in the Peruvian highlands, where people live with, respect, shear and sometimes eat alpacas. Gina Turrigiano, RtB guest-host of long standing, wears her biological hat in this conversation, bringing to bear insights about avian intelligence and the other sorts of animal community that silently surround our species (think microbiome...). John tries to steer the conversation towards SF as usual. Read Transcript Here (or Visit the Recallthisbook.org Transcript page) Upcoming episodes: What do you make of Amazon? The new Sears Roebuck? Some people have enough love in their hearts to share with the masses, even when they're sick. Here's a story of a real hero who made a difference in the lives of young, fatherless girls in the South Bronx. This story is sure to warm your heart and showcase the reality that one person can make a difference. About Chris: Chris Astacio is a coach with a huge heart. A coach in the South Bronx, Chris created an opportunity to help young, troubled girls come together as a family by starting a softball team and he became a surrogate father to many girls without a father in their lives. His story reached the Ellen Show, and the lives he touched is one worth telling, over and over again. Professionally he’s a Social Media Coordinator and besides baseball he likes to swim, watch movies and send gifs whenever possible. We spoke in our short time together about the cost of seeking help, the difficulty of opening up, and how his experiences have impacted his ability to create content via social media, podcasting, or his long form creative writing, and how each can, in turn, impact his mental health.
