THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Jerry Hartfield is the producer of Grave Encounters, a reality television program directed by ghost hunter Lance Preston. Hartfield explains that the show was canceled after five episodes following the crew's disappearance and presents raw scenes from recovered footage of the sixth and final episode. The Grave Encounters crew consists of Lance, occult specialist Sasha Parker, surveillance operator Matt White, cameraman T.C. Gibson, and fake medium Houston Grey. The crew is invited to examine the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena have been reported for years. Kenny, the hospital's caretaker, takes the crew on a day tour and informs them of the hospital's history, particularly of a doctor named Arthur Friedkin, who performed unethical experiments and lobotomies on the hospital's patients before being killed by them. The crew lock themselves inside the hospital for the night and began their investigation, setting up camp near the main entrance and positioning static cameras throughout the building. No paranormal activity seems to occur within the first few hours until T.C. captures a door slamming behind him. The crew attempts to establish contact with the invisible entities responsible for this demonstration, and the incidents soon become more flagrant and hostile. The crew begins to repack in preparation for the Kenny's return. Matt sets out alone to retrieve the static cameras, but suddenly disappears. When neither Matt or Kenny return, the crew forces the front doors open, but discover that they lead to another hallway, as well as to other false exits. The crew also notes that it is still nighttime outside the building when their clocks indicate that it is well past morning. In their continued search for Matt and an exit, the crew encounters a girl whose face demonically distorts. As the crew flees in fear, Houston is separated from the others and is strangled to death by an invisible force. When the crew catch their breath, they discover that they have been fitted with hospital identification bracelets bearing their names. The crew eventually find Matt, wearing a hospital gown and having gone mad; he mumbles nonsense about his apparent mental disorders, and explains that the only means of escape is to be "cured" by the hospital's residents. T.C. is pulled into a blood-filled bathtub by a ghost and disappears, while Matt throws himself down an elevator shaft as Lance and Sasha are attacked by a demon. Lance and Sasha enter the tunnels in search of an exit. Sasha falls ill and is abducted by a mist as she and Lance sleep. The terrified and unstable Lance wanders the tunnels alone and feeds on live rats to survive. He finds a door leading into Friedkin's operating room, which contains an altar and evidence of satanic rituals and black magic. He turns to see the apparitions of Friedkin and several nurses, who drag the screaming Lance to an operating table. The camera cuts out for a few moments before it is turned back on by a lobotomized Lance,[2] who proclaims that he is cured and allowed to leave.

Hartfield & Co. is the only bourbon distillery to exist in Bourbon County since prohibition. Even though they've been in business for a little over 11 years, Hartfield and Co. recently made a lot of waves in the bourbon community when they released their 9 Year Old Family Reserve Bourbon. With most of the barrels clocking in at over 140 proof, this bourbon sold out instantly and only a handful of groups/store were able to select single barrels of it. Justin's House of Bourbon was one of the stores that selected a single barrel and they recently had a release event for this bottle. After the event concluded, we got to hang with Jeremy Buchanan (CEO/Master Distiller) and Mike Leek (VP of sales) from Hartfield & Co. for an interesting and engaging conversation. If you've ever wondered about Hartfield and Co., then you won't want to miss this episode. You'll get to hear about how this distillery came to be as well as how they approach crafting each of their bourbons. Not only did we taste and comment on the 9 year old family reserve bourbon, but we also tried their pre-prohibition style bourbon as well as their Old Bourbon County brand. As always, we had an excellent time recording with Jeremy and Mike. If you haven't been paying attention to Hartfield and Co., you are definitely going to want to check them out in the future as they are doing some incredible and amazing stuff. This is a wonderful conversation and we hope you enjoy listening about all things Hartfield and Co! --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

Frank Churchill's letter is too good to keep to herself, so of course Emma immediately shares it with Mr. Knightley to get his thoughts. His patience for Frank Churchill is limited, though, and his priority is to discuss a more pressing issue with Emma - where they should reside after marriage. Mr. Knightley knows Emma cannot quit her father and Hartfield, so what if he were to join her there instead? Emma is delighted at how everything is falling into place (except for the situation with poor Harriet, but she tries to keep that from her mind). Join her and Mr. Knightley as they comment, scheme, and plan for the future, and let them accompany you as you drift peacefully into an evening of gentle slumber.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 14, 2025 is: deus ex machina • DAY-us-eks-MAH-kih-nuh • noun A deus ex machina is a character or thing that suddenly enters the story in a novel, play, movie, etc., and solves a problem that had previously seemed impossible to solve. // The introduction of a new love interest in the final act was the perfect deus ex machina for the main character's happy ending. See the entry > Examples: "The poultry thieves in Emma provide a particularly humorous example of deus ex machina: the arrival of a poultry thief into the surrounding area (on the penultimate page of the novel, no less) and his theft of Mrs. Weston's turkeys frightens Mr. Woodhouse enough to consent to Emma's marriage and to allow Mr. Knightley to move into Hartfield." — Inger Sigrun Bredkjær Brodey, Jane Austen & the Price of Happiness, 2024 Did you know? The New Latin term deus ex machina is a translation of a Greek phrase and means literally "a god from a machine." Machine, in this case, refers to the crane (yes, crane) that held a god over the stage in ancient Greek and Roman drama. The practice of introducing a god at the end of a play to unravel and resolve the plot dates from at least the 5th century B.C.; Euripides (circa 484-406 B.C.) was one playwright who made frequent use of the device. Since the late 1600s, deus ex machina has been applied in English to unlikely saviors and improbable events in fiction or drama that bring order out of chaos in sudden and surprising ways.

This week, Emma is on high alert, as Mr. Weston arrives at Hartfield in a state of agitation. What could be the matter? He whisks her away and won't reveal a thing until they get to Randalls, and Mrs. Weston can break the news to Emma herself. The news is more shocking than she ever could have imagined: Frank Churchill is engaged to Jane Fairfax! What's more, they've been secretly engaged this entire time. The deception is unbelievable. Luckily, Emma has moved on from any attachment to Frank, but she knows the same cannot be said for poor Harriet. She is incensed, but there is nothing she can do other than lie down, smarting in her own feelings. We also reflect on the insights we have gained through this close reading of Emma, and how it has changed our views of the novel. The character we discuss is Jane Fairfax. It's February, and love, as always, is in the air this month. So we're celebrating movie love with a duo of Jane Austen adaptations! First up is the Autumn de Wilde feature film directorial debut Emma. De Wilde perfectly marries Eleanor Catton's excellent screenplay adaptation of Austen's novel with her own exceptionally rich visual style to create a film that is both perfectly period and surprisingly modern. From the collaborative use of color in the production design and costume, to the masterful lighting and camera movement choices, to the choice of diagetic music performed by the actors themselves, de Wilde's Emma is a standout adaptation among the many other films crowding the field. Hendricks was allegedly driving a van on the Six Flags Over Georgia grounds with multiple occupants in the rear cargo compartment, including two juveniles, without seatbelts or seats. The van's sliding door was reportedly open. Hendricks is accused of operating the van in a manner that ejected Crook while navigating a left curve, leading to serious head injuries. Crook was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital. Hendricks was released on $27,720 bond. STORY 2: Acworth Police Name Suspect in Card Theft from Assisted Living Facility The Acworth Police Department has identified Markinious Katrell Hartfield of New Orleans as the suspect who allegedly used stolen credit and debit cards from an assisted living facility. Hartfield, who presents as female despite being male, is charged with first-degree burglary, credit card forgery, identity theft, and exploiting a disabled or elderly person. He has multiple arrests for similar incidents in other jurisdictions. The stolen cards were used at Walmart, and Hartfield was captured on surveillance cameras. The suspect, not employed by the facility, allegedly entered the business wearing scrubs similar to staff uniforms, checking residents' doors and entering unlocked rooms. Acworth Police suspect additional victims and encourage residents to check financial statements for fraudulent activities.     STORY 3: McEachern Basketball Standout JD Palm Has Both Kidneys Removed McEachern High School junior center JD Palm is facing a critical situation as he underwent surgery to remove both kidneys due to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, diagnosed last spring. The 6-foot-10, 210-pound player, once a five-star prospect, urgently needs a kidney donor. Despite the kidney disease diagnosis in 2022, Palm played limited minutes in the 2022-23 season, dealing with constant headaches and high blood pressure. Now in need of a donor, Palm's coach, Tremayne Anchrum Sr., is reaching out for help, emphasizing the urgency of finding a match for the young player. JD Palm aspires to return to school after the surgery. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back.   Break: ESOG STORY 4: 'Good and Evil': Ragsdale Plans to Continue Banning Books in Cobb County Schools Cobb County School District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale has expressed his intention to continue banning books in the district, emphasizing the removal of "sexually explicit, lewd, and pornographic" material. Ragsdale commended Marietta City Schools for their similar efforts. The initial bans were prompted by an email from the right-wing social media group Libs of TikTok. Ragsdale asserted that once sexually explicit content is identified, it is the district's responsibility to protect students and inform parents. The ongoing review aims to identify and remove such materials. Critics argue that the bans disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ content, leading to concerns about the targeting of the LGBTQ+ community. Public commenters, including high school senior Ava Bussey, expressed opposition to the book bans, citing the impact on LGBTQ+ students and urging the district to listen to students' needs for a successful learning environment. STORY 5: Cobb Leaders Break Ground on Mableton Workforce Development Center Cobb County is set to establish the Cobb WorkSource Center in Mableton, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by over 50 people. The $4 million project, funded by $2.8 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and grants, aims to become a hub for workforce development, offering training rooms, a computer lab, and business coaching services. The 10,000-square-foot center will replace Cobb Fire Station 1 on Mableton Parkway, addressing the need for workforce development services in the southern part of the county. The initiative aligns with the county's commitment to equity, focusing on areas with high concentrations of low-income and minority communities. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: GCPS   STORY 6: Ragsdale Announces Location for $50 Million Event Center The Cobb County Board of Education plans to build a $50 million, 8,000-seat event building on Glover Street next to the district's headquarters. The facility, approved in a 6-1 vote in March 2023, is intended for hosting events like science fairs, art presentations, and graduation ceremonies. The property, spanning over 10 acres, includes the former A1 Rental facility, the district's police department headquarters, and a demolished building at 440 Glover Street. The new event center aims to fill a void in the northern part of Cobb County, providing a space for various activities. Board member Becky Sayler has expressed concerns about additional costs and lack of clarity regarding the project's expenses. Board Chairman Randy Scamihorn anticipates the new facility's potential and the need for improvements to the police department headquarters, with construction timelines yet to be determined. STORY 7: 'A Different Mindset': Cobb School Board Talks New Career Center The Cobb County School Board is considering options to enhance post-secondary education by approving an architect for a new career center in north Cobb. The board plans to engage Atlanta-based Collins Cooper Carusi Architects to design the center, funded by the sixth education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (Ed-SPLOST) at an estimated cost of over $700,000. The center, mandated to be in north Cobb per the SPLOST project list, aims to provide students with alternative pathways to traditional four-year colleges. The district is currently exploring suitable locations for the center, with a central north Cobb location suggested for better accessibility. Additionally, the board discussed the development of a $50 million multi-use facility approved in March 2023, which is expected to host various events such as science fairs, arts presentations, and graduation ceremonies. BREAK: DRAKE STORY 8: Major airline fires back at analyst over bankruptcy claims The airline industry, known for its challenges, faces uncertainties with potential bankruptcies. Warren Buffett's past skepticism resonates, as airlines like JetBlue and Spirit grapple with financial woes. Analysts, including TD Cowen's Helene Becker, express concerns about Spirit Airlines' survival, pointing to its debt and financial constraints. While Spirit denies pursuing Chapter 11, analysts suggest bankruptcy restructuring as a viable option. The airline's future hinges on debtholder cooperation, given its financial vulnerabilities. Fitch Ratings urges a clear liquidity plan. Despite potential disruptions, bankruptcy doesn't guarantee passenger abandonment. Spirit's decision to resist a merger with JetBlue adds complexity to its fate, impacting consumers and the airline industry. Spirit asserts ongoing efforts to fortify its balance sheet and operations.   Break: INGLES 1 – Henssler :60  Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. #33: Dameian Hartfield - Wishing for an Earthquake

How Humans Work with Jef Szi

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2023 101:32

Episode SummaryIn Episode #33, Dameian Hartfield joins the podcast for a deeply honest conversation, recounting some of the major moments in his life. In many respects, this podcast is a continuation of an ongoing conversation we have had as friends for nearly two decades, where Dameian speaks his truth and in doing so acts as an ambassador for the greater good, sharing the realities of what comes with growing up in an at-risk community like the Nickerson Gardens Housing Projects in the Watts neighborhood. Beginning the show with his reasons for a slow-cook approach to doing this podcast and then his experiences doing gang-intervention work and some of the key dilemmas and pressures that went with it, we get a feel for the values and lessons Dameian has earned in his life. For example, he describes how political agendas and lack of trust between different organizations in a community add more pressure to one's that are already struggling. We also see how he positioned himself in relation to those politics. Following that, we begin to hear about the challenges that come with life after being in a gang. The uphill battle of re-establishing a positive reputation along with carrying the war-like events of street battles without a reconciliation process to move forward in the way military veterans have is a hard edge to have in one's reality. Sharing with us some details of his journey, like being shot at the age of fifteen and having to deal with conflict zones like ‘Hamburger Hill,' we come to learn why the trauma of being a young, misdirected, urban warrior would need healing places like the one where we first met — at a men's retreat held by the Mosaic Multicultural Foundation deep in the redwoods of Mendocino, California. It was there Dameian and I have formed a relationship that has transcended our native neighborhoods and social upbringings. Next, Dameian takes us into the powerful decisions and transformations that took place for for him as he spent a decade in prison, repaying his debt to society. We hear how he learned to become a communicator, leaving behind his older strategies of simply acting in ways that he thought were needed. Dameian made key decisions to use his prison sentence for his own personal development, even knowing he had a very real possibility of never making it out. In this part of the podcast, we get some profound contours of Dameian's path through this important period of change and soul searching. Further on we learn about how, when he was on the run for a case against him, his relationship with his mother kept him from getting into deeper trouble, perhaps even getting killed. Dameian also walks us through how his Mom imparted to him the realities of the financial struggles they had, and pulled along his questions and challenges into a place of greater understanding and participation in the struggle. Even in his darkest moments of despair, his Mom was able to help him see beyond his hopelessness. In these stories we get a powerful picture of his mom's capacity to guide in the face of adversity, and the important impact that had. In total, this powerful, authentic episode takes us underneath the illegality of gang life in an at risk community, providing us with a sincere portrait of the human lives in and around those situations. And just when we think we are wrapping up, Dameian takes us a step further into his life experiences. He closes out our conversation with an incredibly moving and undeniable accurate portrait of what the challenges of being a black man in the American story is like. *****Dameian Hartfield primarily grew up in Nickerson Gardens housing projects in Los Angeles, California. He also spent part of his youth in Pomona, CA. Currently, Dameian spends his time growing his company, 1 Tamu Essentials, with his wife Dana, and spending time with his kids and grandkids. If we loved these chapters less, we might be able to talk about them more. Which would be hard, because this is a long one. All we have to say is KNIGHTLEY LOVES EMMA! Also, Frank explains himself and Knightley hears him out, and Knightley decides to move in with Emma. Topics discussed include Knightley's jealousy, Austen's iconic romance writing, couples gossiping, and Knightley as a feminist icon.Study questions: Topics discussed include Frank's redemption arc, whether Frank is more Churchill or Weston, Knightley's big reveal and how he compares to other Austen heartthrobs, friends to lovers, the Hartfield move, and the power balance in age difference couples.Funniest quote: 1. "Mr. Knightley, always so kind, so feeling, so truly considerate for every body, would never deserve to be less worshipped than now; and it really was too much to hope even of Harriet, that she could be in love with more than three men in one year."2. “He trifles here,” said he, “as to the temptation. He knows he is wrong, and has nothing rational to urge.—Bad."3. “Nay, nay, read on.—You will find how very much he suffers.” “I hope he does,” Questions moving forward: What's going to happen when Emma tells Harriet? The Joyce-Armstrong Fragment was found in the field which is called Lower Haycock, lying one mile to the westward of the village of Withyham, upon the Kent and Sussex border. It was on the 15th September last that an agricultural labourer, James Flynn, perceived a briar pipe lying near the footpath which skirts the hedge in Lower Haycock. A few paces farther on he picked up a pair of broken binocular glasses. Finally, among some nettles in the ditch, he caught sight of a flat, canvas-backed book, which proved to be a note-book with detachable leaves, some of which had come loose and were fluttering along the base of the hedge. These he collected, but some, including the first, were never recovered, and leave a deplorable hiatus in this all-important statement. The note-book was taken by the labourer to his master, who in turn showed it to Dr. J. H. Atherton, of Hartfield. This gentleman at once recognized the need for an expert examination, and the manuscript was forwarded to the Aero Club in London, where it now lies. I will now give the narrative exactly as it stands, beginning at page three of the blood-soaked note-book... Paul Hartfield is my guest this week on Nightmare Success In an Out. Paul is an author of the book: For Such A Time As This – When a Singer Forgets why he sings. Paul had a 25-year career being a professional international opera singer…singing for presidents, world class opera houses, and major symphonies. His twist in his life story occurred when he retired from singing, and hit it big in the real estate world in the early 2000's. When the real estate market crashed so did Paul's business and his life. He walks us through his gripping story of losing it all and eventually having to come to terms with going to prison. He first struggled to find his way in the unfamiliar prison world, but eventually he found his voice using his musical talents to unite and inspire inmates. Paul is a natural storyteller who takes us on an incredible journey of overcoming the worst and living for the better. His charity Hartfield Missions works to help inmates with money in and out of prison. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Hey lady, So in honor of Black History Month, I am interviewing four amazing black military women throughout the month of February, who have gone BEYOND the military as coaches. They share their journey, the challenges they faced, and how they overcame every obstacle to get them where they are now. Today, I introduce you to Lieutenant Colonel Jada Hartfield and Life Coach. She shares her perspective on the importance of mentorship and coaching before, during, and after our military career. She believes we can ALL master our lives one beat at a time. We pray this episode blesses you and encourages you! Much love, Wendi More about Guest: Lieutenant Colonel Jada HartfieldWebsite | Facebook | Instagram |  LinkedIn | Join us in the Facebook Faith-led Military Women Community at bit.ly/beyondthemilitarygrp More about coaching resources from me:Website  |  LinkedIn |  Instagram  |  Facebook |
