The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) aims to “reintegrate Taiwan,” effectively stripping the Taiwanese people of their de facto independence. Achieving this takeover with minimal military action and limited long-term damage to Taiwan's infrastructure and economy would offer the CCP substantial economic, diplomatic, and military advantages. A well-executed, well-resourced, and well-timed cyber-enabled economic coercion campaign could provide the CCP with such an opportunity. To explore these threats, a delegation of FDD experts recently visited Taiwan to conduct war games and tabletop exercises (TTXs). These simulations were designed to evaluate the most salient and dangerous threat scenarios posed by the CCP to the Taiwanese people. The TTX involved 20 participants, primarily from Taiwanese banking and finance sectors, who simulated the roles of senior policymakers in Taiwan, the United States, and China. They assessed the most likely and perilous actions the CCP could take to isolate and coerce Taiwan short of outright warThe TTX produced several key recommendations to enhance economic, cyber, and societal resilience, and offered insights into how the United States and its allies can support Taiwan in its struggle for autonomy. To discuss these findings, FDD's Craig Singleton and RADM (Ret.) Mark Montgomery are joined by Ti-Chen Chen of the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance and Ben Jensen of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Lili Pike of Foreign Policy will moderate the discussion and FDD Founder and President Cliff May, who headed the delegation to Taiwan, will deliver introductory remarks. For more, check out: fdd.org/events/2024/10/04/targeting-taiwan-beijings-playbook-for-economic-and-cyber-warfare/

When Sara and Ben got married in their early twenties, the last thing they expected to struggle with was infertility. For 14 years, their inability to conceive remained unexplained. Then, during their quest to find answers, they discovered the pivotal role of hormonal health. Join us today as we sit down with Sara and Ben to discuss what inspired them to create clean, safe, and trusted products supporting hormone health and the phenomenal story behind their brand, Hugh & Grace, named after their two miracle children — both of whom were borne by Sara and Ben's wonderful sisters who volunteered to be surrogates! In our conversation, we get into the disruptive impact that ingredients in everyday products can have on our hormones, the many conditions beyond infertility associated with exposure to these chemicals, and why they felt compelled to start this company and help others, despite the challenges. Sara and Ben also share their insights on navigating entrepreneurship, identifying customer pain points, how they developed their products, and much more. If you've been trying to figure out how to turn your passion into a business, while also making logical, business-minded decisions, then this informative and inspirational conversation is a must-listen!
In this episode, we have Liana McCurry back to talk about her Churchill Fellowship findings on what the top PISA performing countries are doing with maths instruction and how we can use that information to improve outcomes for kids living with learning difficulties. Show notes Liana McCurry's Churchill Fellowship has come just in time. Liana travelled abroad to investigate best practices in teaching mathematics that provide the best outcomes for all students. Australia's PISA ranking plummeted from 10th internationally in 2003 to 30th in 2018, where it fell below the average for the first time. How we teach mathematics in Australia is the prime suspect for this decline. Dyscastia Episode 14 was recorded prior to Liana's departure, where we discussed intervention in Maths. Early in the conversation, constructivist learning theories are discussed as a big part of the problem in the context of how this approach to learning and teaching exacerbates cycles of social disadvantage. Anyone who taught in the late 80s and 90s in Australia has (tried) to work with curriculum frameworks that are broadly based on constructivist theories. In discussing the differences between the curricula of the countries Liana visited and Australia's mathematics curriculum, Ben Jensen's work was mentioned. The ERRR Podcast #77 is well worth a listen if you want to know more about the shortcomings of Australia's curriculum. Greg Ashman gets a mention, as Greg is an outspoken critic of the direction of the Australian maths curriculum. Greg recently gave an excellent interview on the Science of Reading Podcast, where he gives a stunning account of cognitive load theory. Greg also sits on the other side of the mic in his own podcast, where he and Amanda VanDerHeyden talk maths instruction. Comments and questions are welcome! We would love to hear about your experiences teaching mathematics directly and explicitly as opposed to other methods. We're also interested in your experiences with bringing review and maths fluency into your instructional approaches. If you've taught in any of the countries Liana visited, we'd love to hear your reflections.

They founded Hugh & Grace after a 14 year struggle with unexplained infertility. During their research, a revelation surfaced—the reality that many everyday products like skincare and home cleaning products are absorbed into our bodies and have the power to disrupt our hormones. The average woman exposes herself to over 160 unique chemicals per day and men over 80 which can lead to significant health issues. Fueled by this discovery, they created Hugh & Grace to create awareness, education, products and community, and named the company after their miracle children, made possible by two of their sisters who volunteered to be surrogates. From December 7, 2019: Wargaming has long been a staple of military strategizing, but how do we plan for the future in cyberspace, a realm where governments do not hold a monopoly on capabilities? A new report from the Atlantic Council argues that "visualizing and describing the evolution of cyber capabilities and strategic competition require envisioning multiple futures," and the report sets out to do exactly that. This week, Lawfare's Susan Hennessey sat down with John Watts, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, and JD Work, the Bren Chair for Cyber Conflict and Security at the Marine Corps University, who are authors of "Alternate Cybersecurity Futures," along with Nina Kollars, Ben Jensen, and Chris Whyte. Scientists, artists and some of the world’s biggest companies are carving up the visual spectrum, and claiming certain colours as their own, so who does have a right to use the colours of the rainbow? We explore the ongoing rift over the worlds “blackest black” Vantablack, which was created by engineering firm Surrey Nanosystems, and can only be used by the artist Anish Kapoor. Contemporary British artist Stuart Semple argues that creativity should not be limited by commercial agreements, while Surrey Nanosystems executive Ben Jensen explains that the material is not suitable for general use. Author Kassia St Clair explores the meaning and history of colour, and we hear how interpretations of colour have changed from Julie Irish, an assistant professor specialising in colour, at the College of Design in Iowa. Note: Surrey NanoSystems has clarified their material Vantablack isn’t toxic, as described by one speaker in this programme, but can be an irritant. This programme is a repeat from January 2021. Sara and Ben Jensen went through 14 years of unexplained infertility and after many trying years, they were blessed with 2 miracle babies created out of surrogacy each by one of their sisters. Their two children became the namesake and inspiration for their new company: Hugh and Grace, which is the first skincare brand addressing hormone disruption and hormone self-care in the market. In today’s episode, Sara and Ben open up to all the raw emotions of what that infertility journey looked like from both perspectives as partners, how their relationship with each other and the mindset of being parents evolved over time, and all the lessons they learned along the way which led them to launching Hugh & Grace. In the second part of this Feature, Sara and Ben Jensen, Co-CEOs and Co-Founders of Hugh & Grace talk about unity in a company. They urge entrepreneurial listeners to get ready for stress and uncertainty as their company grows, and how important it is to be united with your partner. They say that growing a company is just like parenting a child together. They talk about how cracked skin turned into an emergency room visit. With healthy skin this could be avoided, and that further inspired the birth of Hugh & Grace. They outline the early hustle for their brand and different people’s reluctance to pick up their product. Since Sara and Ben were parenting their company, they were patient and determined and it led to their ultimate success. In part 2, we learn how to parent a company, the difficulties in the beginning, and fighting through the oversaturation of the skincare market. In the first part of this Feature, we interview the wife and husband team, Sara and Ben Jensen, Co-CEOs and Co-Founders of Hugh & Grace. Hugh & Grace is the first skincare company that uses natural products to address hormone disruption. Sara and Ben have been married for 18 years. They spent most of that time unsuccessfully trying to get pregnant before they were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Through this course, they learned about hormone-disrupting chemicals and how prevalent they are in products we use every day. That’s how the brand started. Not with a product, but with a problem. Sara dives into the emotional implications of infertility. She spends a lot of her time helping other women who are struggling with the same problem. In Part 1, we hear how Hugh & Grace started, their mission, and the impact of infertility in the co-founders’ lives. The coronavirus pandemic has severely disrupted the global economy, and its impact is likely to last for many months. But some foresee (and are hoping for) permanent changes to global trade: They want businesses to restructure their supply chains and bring more operations back home, thereby reducing dependence upon foreign workers and potential vulnerability to pressure from foreign governments. Some are even willing to pay companies’ relocation costs. In the post-COVID-19 world, will business leaders reconsider the trade-offs between efficiency and resilience against major supply disruptions? How are governments’ responses to the pandemic likely to influence these decisions? And what are the national security implications? Ben Jensen again joins Chris and Melanie to discuss these and other questions. In the grievances and attaboys portion of the show, the trio showers praise on those men and women working to solve the COVID-19 problem and showing random acts of kindness toward their fellow humans, while throwing shade on those who often seem to be standing in the way. Bach as well as the first movement of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 2 this week, played impeccably by the wonderful bassist Ben Jensen, currently a student of Bruce Bransby at Indiana University.
