Tune in as Arthur's buddy Anna hops back onto the program for a deep dive into Don't Worry Darling, the 2022 psychological thriller that had been swamped in a notorious wave of media frenzy (remember the spit mystery, anyone?). But once you dig past the Hollywood hubbub, what do you get with this mindfuck-lite trip through a 1950s desert-set company town whose vision of idyllic suburbia just may be hiding dark secrets beneath the surface? Along with unpacking all of that on this episode, the discussion covers rom-com chatter that ranges from Anna's Isn't It Romantic-related story to the hosts' shared take that Set It Up is enjoyable enough while being overrated, Anna's numerous imitations of Harry Styles's “our life together” line, Arthur's hatred for the Wicked trailer, and interesting material from both the spec script and the revised script that had ultimately been left out of DWD (perhaps to its detriment). Directed by Olivia Wilde, Don't Worry Darling stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, KiKi Layne, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, Kate Berlant, Asif Ali, Douglas Smith, Timothy Simons, Ari'el Stachel, Steve Berg, and Dita Von Teese. Fresh from the 11th Chicago Critics Film Festival, Ian and Pat look at one of 2024's breakout performances--with an early review of Kiki Layne in Dandelion!Writer/director Nicole Riegel's indie drama centers on the eponymous struggling musician (Layne), whose shot at fame was derailed years ago when her mother took ill. Now, pushing 30, and with no prospects beyond singing to distracted hotel bar patrons, Dandelion travels from Ohio to South Dakota for a song contest/biker rally. There she meets a country/folk band, and falls for one of its singers, a dreamy UK transplant named Casey (Thomas Doherty). The film marks a new era for Layne, who until now has been strictly known as an actress (in films like If Beale Street Could Talk, The Old Guard, and Don't Worry, Darling). In Dandelion, the star shares another talent with the world: a magnificent singing voice. In this (mostly) spoiler-free review, Ian and Pat discuss the film's unabashedly indie sensibilities; its place among great movies about making art, and whether or not it is more post-racial than its creators may think. Plus: Ian spoke briefly with Kiki Layne on the Dandelion red carpet at CCFF. Stay til the end to find out how Layne and Riegel created the character of Dandelion, and what Layne will take with her from the film into her next projects!Note: Dandelion is still winding its way through the festival circuit, but is slated for theatrical release on July 12, from IFC Films!Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week!Show LinksCatch up with Pat's full coverage of the 11th Chicago Critics Film Festival at HollywoodChicago.com. In honor of Black History month, we decided to examine two disparate, albeit excellent, depictions of the African American experience with Mo' Better Blues and If Beale Street Could Talk. Ahead of our subjects, we sort through a premium selection of Blue Plate Special items, including our thoughts on the recently announced Sam Mendes' series of films on The Beatles, a pair of new releases in Bob Marley: One Love and Lisa Frankenstein, and the complicated legacy of departed country music superstar Toby Keith. We eventually turn the radio on over to the highest quality jazz station imaginable with our double feature: listen as we dive into the careers of auteurs Spike Lee and Barry Jenkins, discuss how their visions of blackness are translated into their respective films, situate the extent to which the former's 1990 work fit into his larger narrative and aesthetic interests, and question what the latter's future looks like in an age where personally expressive commercial cinema is harder and harder to come by. On this week's episode, Will and Ian enjoy their time in a secluded, beautiful Utopia. The temperature is always perfect, the booze is plentiful, the food delicious. And it's even got a kind of... 1950s vibe to it. Very low tech, you dig? It's a little weird though, some odd occurrences, a place we aren't allowed to go to, questions we aren't allowed to ask..... Sometimes the walls feel like they are literally closing in on them. And their eyes are always dry and itchy, and... wait, who's feeding them? Bathing them? Helping them to the bathroom!? Wait... this took an odd turn, where were we... what is this, IS this? They're freaking out! But hey- DON'T WORRY DARLING Directed by: Olivia Wilde. On this episode of the FILM ETC. podcast, host Mike Webb goes into an idyllic utopia set in 1950s California with Olivia Wilde's sophomore directorial effort DON'T WORRY DARLING, and yet a review would not only do justice without giving his thoughts on the film's media blunder around it. It's a very special episode you don't wanna miss. DON'T WORRY DARLING stars Florence Pugh as Alice, a 1950s housewife living with her husband Jack (Harry Styles) in a utopian experimental community. But soon she begins to worry that the company her husband works for could be hiding disturbing secrets. Olivia Wilde directs and co-stars in the film along with Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, and Chris Pine. Harry Styles over substance? Now that's Olivia Wilde. Don't worry, darling, we're almost Florence Pugh with these puns, even though we're on a Nick Kroll. We promise to stay in our Kiki Layne...we know you Chris Pine for them. That's right, this week we're stepping into a strange and dangerous place...the second film directed by Olivia Wilde! Don't Worry Darling is a psychological thriller that has been the talk of tinsel town since its gossip-fueled premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. But what about the movie itself? Do we spit on it? You'll have to be the judge of us being the judges. This week we discuss a film that has been surrounded by drama and controversy: Don't Worry Darling. Directed by Olivia Wilde, this film follows Alice (Florence Pugh) and her fun little stay in a place called Victory. An idyllic little city where everyone has everything they have ever needed and no one knows what is going on. But (and this is obvious) things aren't as they seem. But... Is Don't Worry Darling Good?If you'd like to suggest a film or film franchise, or if you'd just like to say hello, you can reach us at biigpodcast@gmail.com, @biigpodcast on twitter, or @butisitgoodpodcast on instagram!
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Eve O'Dea & Danilo Castro. Together we're reviewing the latest film from Olivia Wilde, "Don't Worry Darling," starring Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Chris Pine & Olivia Wilde herself. Steeped in behind-the-scenes controversy where many don't know what's real or not (much like the lead character in the film), the film has garnered a lot of publicity, but what did we ultimately think of it? Tune in as we discuss the characters, story, crafts, and divisive ending in our spoiler-free review. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... This week we discuss Danny DeVito throwing some shade (as they say) on Colin Farrell's Penguin performance. Who's interpretation is the better Penguin? We discuss. Peacock has finished filming the Twisted Metal TV series adaptation of the 90's video game. Will it be any good? Also there was an alternative end credit scene at the end of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, written by Michael Waldron that featured Reed Richards, do we think this could mean John Krasinski could reprise his role in other movies? Are the old Fantastic Four movies cannon? We speculate. Also Jordan Peele may not be done with the Nope world. Would we like to see another Nope sequel? Shia LeBeouf claimed that the final product of Honey Boy was not what he had originally envisioned regarding the portrayal of his father. Also we discuss the drama between him and Olivia Wilde on the set of Don't Worry Darlings starring Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, Kiki Layne, Nick Kroll, and Chris Pine. Halloween Ends has new photos from the movie, are we excited for the last of the trilogy? Then for See It or Skip It, we discuss Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starring Daniel Radcliffe "Weird Al" Yankovic ; Evan Rachel Wood Madonna ; Rainn Wilson Dr. Demento ; Julianne Nicholson Mary Yankovic ; Thomas Lennon. Plus the very strange but very much talked about horror adaptation of Winnie the Pooh, Blood and Honey has an official trailer. Are we excited? Are you? Let us know your thoughts on Twitter. Welcome to Open Form, a new weekly film podcast hosted by award-winning writer Mychal Denzel Smith. Each week, a different author chooses a movie: a movie they love, a movie they hate, a movie they hate to love. Something nostalgic from their childhood. A brand-new obsession. Something they've been dying to talk about for ages and their friends are constantly annoyed by them bringing it up. In this episode, Mychal talks to Farah Jasmine Griffin (Read Until You Understand) about the 2018 film If Beale Street Could Talk, directed by Barry Jenkins, adapted from the novel by James Baldwin, and starring Regina King, KiKi Layne, Stephan James, and Colman Domingo.
