Stage 8 of the 2026 Tour de France took the peloton 180.4km through the Dordogne, from Périgueux to Bergerac, for another day that was always expected to end in a bunch sprint. At 38 years old, Girmay Zahilay is King County’s youngest-ever executive. He’s coming in after the long tenure of his predecessor Dow Constantine, who ran the county for nearly 16 years. Face aux meilleurs de la planète, quel rôle peuvent espérer jouer les coureurs et coureuses du continent ? De notre envoyé spécial à Kigali,Le classement final du 17ᵉ Tour du Rwanda laisse apparaître de belles promesses : 3 coureurs africains dans le top 10, un jeune Rwandais, Vainqueur Masengesho, est arrivé en 7ᵉ position. Mais aux Mondiaux, avec des Pogacar ou Vingegaard annoncés, la concurrence sera bien plus relevée. De plus, le parcours pourrait être un « mini Paris-Roubaix à l'africaine », selon David Louvet, l'entraîneur de l'équipe du Rwanda depuis 2023.Paris-Roubaix donc pour les pavés, la distance, 270 km, à cela s'ajoute l'altitude et de nombreuses ascensions. Un cocktail qui fait de ces Mondiaux les plus durs, peut-être, de l'Histoire. « Avoir un Africain à l'arrivée, c'est sûr que ça va être compliqué, juge David Louvet. Au niveau du classement, moi, je pense qu'on peut reprendre celui de l'année dernière et on aura les mêmes coureurs à l'arrivée. » C'est-à-dire Tadej Pogacar, loin devant et pas grand monde à l'arrivée.À Zurich, où s'est disputée la dernière édition, le parcours très vallonné avait eu raison des sprinteurs. Même Biniam Girmay, maillot vert du dernier Tour de France, avait jeté l'éponge en cours de route. Alors que fera l'Érythréen cette année ? Peut-il lui, le grand coureur que l'Afrique attendait, zapper les premiers Mondiaux sur le continent ? Tout est possible, disait-il à notre micro fin janvier. Aujourd'hui, l'hypothèse impasse semble la plus avancée. « On a discuté ensemble, la Fédération, le ministère des Sports et Biniam, explique Samson Solomon, sélectionneur de l'Érythrée. J'aimerais qu'il soit au départ de ces Mondiaux, le gouvernement, le peuple, tout le monde aimerait !  Mais c'est son choix. Maintenant, au niveau des jeunes, surtout au niveau des dames, il y a encore des possibilités. Donc le message que moi, je vais lancer à votre micro, c'est de faire en sorte que les fédérations africaines fassent en sorte qu'il y ait beaucoup de dames qui viennent à ces Mondiaux-là. Ce sont nos Mondiaux. Ce n'est pas une affaire du Rwanda, c'est une affaire de toute l'Afrique. Il faut que l'Afrique soit présente. »Le président de la CAC dit espérer au moins 40 Fédérations africaines en septembre pour des chances de médaille minimes. Una etapa sin obstáculos y que tenía que llegar al sprint, y así ocurrió. Lamentablemente el incidente del día fue una caída a 12kms del final con como principal perjudicado Primož Roglič, quien perdió 2min30 y con eso sus opciones para el podium. La llegada final fue un sprint entre los principales velocistas y por tercera vez el más rápido fue el eritreo Biniam Girmay.

Ze hoopten op een spannende etappe, een lange oorlog - maar de koers bleek net zo rustig als hun dag te zijn. Daarom is er in de podcast van vandaag meer tijd om wat dieper in te gaan op een aantal onderwerpen, waaronder Bini, ‘Een ambassadeur voor de sport, voor het land,' en de familiaire ploeg Intermarché die met het kleinste budget uit de World Tour dit alles toch maar weet te bewerkstelligen, ‘Dat geeft toch hoop?'.
