In many ways, Black Elk and John Neihardt lived very different lives. Black Elk was an Oglala Lakota holy man. Neihartd was a European-American literary critic. ⭐In honor of Indigenous People's Day on October 11th, Ellen and Jennifer are going to be delving into the book “Black Elk Speaks” by John G. Niehardt Why this book? Ellen: I think this book would have aptly made it into our review of an episode sooner or later, because I think it very much fits our theme of talking about and exploring various ways mankind is connected to nature and the earth. In the particular context of this book it could be said, and seen to be, as coming from a particularly spiritually influenced angle. But then I'd like to pose the question ‘where does spirituality and science of reality meet, if not but in nature, and the human drive to reconcile ourselves within it?' It seems that Indigenous peoples the world over, or anyone embracing a more animistic purview, are more adept at understanding and balancing along this line; and that a book like Black Elk Speaks, if it is even a fraction true to Black Elk's own word and vision, thus becomes an insightful gift or gentle guide to appeal to the connection of all life. Jennifer: Simply because I have never read anything like this book before and I was extremely interested in hearing Black Elk's story. I feel that many Indigenous people have a way of looking at the world that we have lost. Maybe by learning about indigenous people we can re- learn some of what we as non native people have lost and this will help us change the way in which we have been living. At the very least we need to find a less destructive way to live on this planet so that we can survive. Black Elk is a man who has essentially been through the end of the world and I think there is a lot we can learn from him in this time of change.
Chuck Pfeil is a master of knowing what he can change, and what he cannot. You might meet him as a handyman, a mushroom hunter, a fly fisher or an auditor. Chuck does all those things, but he tries to approach all of them as the same version of himself. It's something he's learned over decades of self-examination, thought and study of New Age texts like Black Elk Speaks, or the works of Deepak Chopra and Caroline Myss. I talk to Chuck about his views on life, how he became interested in spirituality, his views on masculinity, how he navigated a career in public service, and where he's going next.

Summary: In this episode we discuss a modern candidate for sainthood, Nicholas Black Elk (ca. 1863-1950). Black Elk was a Lakota Sioux medicine man whose journey took him from traditional Lakota religion and the Ghost Dance movement to Roman Catholicism. He was probably born in 1863, at a time when his people, the Lakota, still lived independently hunting buffalo on the Northern Great Plains, in what is now the Dakotas and Montana. He relates the story of the first few decades of his life in Black Elk Speaks, a book written by and formed out of a series of conversations with a Nebraskan poet, John G. Neihardt in the early 1930s. Included in the book are his memories of Crazy Horse, the battle of Little Big Horn, meeting Queen Victoria as part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, the Ghost Dance movement, and witnessing the tragic massacre of Lakota civilians at Wounded Knee. And that was only the first part of his long life. Black Elk's life was full of prayer and intense religious questioning. He experienced visions from a young age and eventually became a medicine man. After marrying a Catholic, he eventually converted and became a catechist and missionary, travelling and speaking across the country. At the same time, he passed on Lakota traditions by sharing his life experiences and knowledge with Neihardt (Black Elk Speaks) and anthropologist Joseph Epes Brown (author of The Sacred Pipe), as well as performing traditional dances for tourists. His legacy and claims about his personal religious beliefs remain controversial. Scholars continue to debate whether he continued to believe traditional Lakota religion alongside Christianity, was a sincere orthodox Catholic who rejected the traditional past, and how he reconciled different belief systems and chapters of his life. Two clarifications/corrections to the episode - We checked again on the Two Roads chart and are still unclear on the exact story of its origins, but you can learn more about it in Black Elk: Holy Man of the Oglala by Steltenkamp. Also, the speech by Benjamin Black Ellk and separate comments by Benjamin Black Elk's nephew concerning the practice of Christianity alongside traditional religion were connected in the retelling in our conversation, but would best be understood (and parsed out) by reading/listening to them in context in the sources below, the documentary Walking the Good Red Road and the first chapter of Black Elk Lives. Finally, a disclaimer: this episode covers some controversial episodes in American history as well as a controversial religious thinker. We hope you find this a useful addition to the conversation about Black Elk. Of course we always recommend going back to the sources - ad fontes - and forming your own judgment about this fascinating candidate for sainthood. "I focused on American Indians because my grandmother had studied and written about American Indians. Her doctoral thesis work was with the Pawnee in Oklahoma.(The Lost Universe by Gene Weltfish)"What I vibed to when I was in college was Native American spirituality.I read a book called “Black Elk Speaks”It's the autobiography of one of the men who was at Little Bighorn. He tells his life story and it leads up to the day of the battle against Custard and what happened from his point of view. He knew Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull and [others].His spiritual journey is what really grabs you as you read it.He talks about universal love and peace. And his experience of the holy spirit is just so pure, it feels like there is no dogma between him and God, it's just an open channel."(Black Elk Speaks by John G. Neihardt)“The Teachings of Don Juan” were written by an anthropologist Carlos Castaneda. He met this Indian shaman who introduced him to peyote, mushrooms, and other practices. And he wrote about it all. It became very popular because it spoke to what a lot of people were experiencing with LSD." (The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge by Carlos Castaneda)"Native people didn't habitually lie. Why would you lie?Why would you try to trick me?They did't rock that." "As you become more immersed in thinking about what that way of life must've been like you suddenly realize... [what a relief].What a relief to be among people who were trying to live the best life they could at any given moment and not obsessed with accumulating wealth."

Rosie remembers the work of poet John G. Neihardt, born on this day in Illinois in 1881. Though a poet, he will forever be known for sharing the stories of Native Americans who were displaced by the migration of Europeans across this country and especially across Nebraska. His most famous work was of his conversations with a Lakota Sioux medicine man in the book "Black Elk Speaks".

We're Rocking Down The House в ремиксе Micky Slim. По поводу трека Stay All Night от Stereo Scum, ревьюеры из какого-нибудь западного журнала написали бы "Stereo Scum did it again". Максимальная бас-линия и слова "We Want To Stay All Night Filthy" делают этот трек peak-time бомбой. В постоянной рубрике Bonus Track у меня сегодня тэк-фанк и брейкс легенда из Британии Ли Кумбс (Lee Coombs) с потрясающим треком Out Of My Mind. "Two Men On a Trip", (Paul Oakenfold) "Time of Your Life". Прибежище зловещих брейкбитов "Dubhead", и Axl F элеткроремикс "Would Be True". Jem Panufnik (Soul Of Man). Второй сингл, включающий в себя самый известный ремикс Ли до настоящего времени “Time Of Your Life” для Пола Оакенфолда, с ремиксом New Order "Crystal" на обороте пластинки. Greg welcomes Glenn Schiffman to Inner Journey. Glen is an author, his latest book is called “The Way I Was Taught”, he has produced and educational CD based on the book, “Black Elk Speaks”, he has spent a time very close to Grampa Wallace Black Elk, Glenn has built more than 100 sweat lodges in all regions of the US and has personally conducted over 1000 Inipi (sweat lodge) ceremonies. He is an author, and more importantly, a storyteller, more than an author, he is an elder and a teacher and kind enough to share his wisdom with us.
What is wisdom? We discuss articles by Brian Burkhart, Gregory Cajete, and Anne Waters, plus Black Elk Speaks by John Neihardt (1932) and some traditional stories. With guest Jim Marunich; we read his master's thesis, "Process Metaphysics in the Far West: American Indian Ontologies."
We start with more grumpy old man Kevin griping about flip-flops in the rain. Then a first time podcast recommendation segment. Erica has more reading suggestions with Pretty Deadly by KELLY SUE DECONNICK and EMMA RÍOS, as well as, Black Elk Speaks … Continue reading →
Today's episode is a solo round featuring this essay I wrote about Heroism: Be Your Own Hero Have we lost sight of what it means to be a hero in the modern age? Do we even need heroes anymore? The native american culture portrayed in the book 'Black Elk Speaks' was heavily focused on bravery. We are as removed from that culture as from the culture of chivalry that the knights of the round table were known for. What we do have instead an inventive spirit and the belief that we can become what we set out to become (Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!) Heroes are now innovators, entertainers, teachers, creators, and healers among others. Because we as modern humans have climbed to the top Maslov’s hierarchy of needs, our battle is no longer physical, but rather who we can be for ourselves and others. We have the opportunity re-invent the definition of the hero for the modern human. The experience of becoming a hero is the essence of our humanity. Joseph Campbell saw that the same mythological tales are found in every culture - the story of an adventurer who answers the call to a great challenge, faces down his demons and comes back to society as a changed individual. So, how can you be a hero? *** Find your Cause The hero is called into action for many reasons - to defend their country, to save his family, to provide some service to a group of people. The greatest athletes have been found to be driven by a belief in something greater - it is usually either god or their own abilities. Stephanie Burns of ChicCEO once told me in an interview about ‘Unreasonable Requests' that she found it easy to ask for huge things such as $10,000 of free event space when she was doing it in service of her favorite charity. My own cause that allows me to put for a great effort is to enable people to unlock their fullest human potential by changing the story about themselves (Hero-ification), so that they may contribute to the world in a way that fulfills them and gives them purpose. Determine your Noble Principles Ben Franklin was known for his 10 virtues which he attempted to embody every day. He would track this by putting an X each night next to the ones he was able to fulfill for the day. While many religions give us a series of commandments or qualities to live up to, it is up to us to come up with our own virtues and code of conduct based on what is most important to us. What do you admire in other people? How do you want to feel? What way of being would make you proud of yourself? These are some questions to guide you in making your list. As an example, I have declared the theme for 2016 as ‘the year of living boldly’, so in addition to my other values, I will filter action through the lens “is this action big and bold enough?" Take Courageous Action What are you not satisfied with in your life? What problems do you see in the world? What do people need from you? What do you find yourself thinking about over and over? You Epic Adventure will keep calling and calling, and it is up to you to answer the call and embark on your quest. Heroes are know for their actions and feats, which are impossible to achieve without taking the first step. In the middle of your journey, you will face challenge that is much greater than you anticipated (10 times harder, according to my calculations) and will take all your effort or concentration. In addition, it takes courage to start a new quest, especially when one has little or no experience. Bravery in the face of the unknown defines the hero. Paolo Coelho tells us that making decisions is our god given right as humans and we must embrace this power. Taking action is heroic because by saying yes you are also closing the door on other options because you believe you are fighting the good fight. In my own quest to go to all 50 US states before I turned 30 or become a professional cyclist, I was saying no to regular weekends at the lake with friends.
"What courageous thing can I do today?" - Samuel Hatton I was at the podcast movement conference in Ft. Worth Texas last week. I met tons of great people, and one of the first ones I met on the train from the Airport was today's guest, Samuel Hatton. I was interested in his podcast right away from the title: Courageous Self Confidence. I've been thinking a lot about the nature of confidence, and I just finished reading Black Elk Speaks, which refers often to brave deeds of the Lakota warriors in Black Elk's tribe. Buzz Sprout had a really cool recording studio set up on the conference floor, and I was able to bring in Samuel for a quick live interview. We talk about how to use willpower and courage to boost your level of confidence. Samuel shares a personal story about using courage to build his coaching business. Samuel and I pack a lot of good material into this lighting fast episode, enjoy! Quotes: "Willpower isn't 100% enough" - Samuel Hatton "You start to see your own thoughts when you journal" - Samuel Hatton "Did I want to build a business or a practice?" - Samuel Hatton "What courageous thing can I do today?" - Samuel Hatton "Courage is always on different levels for different people" - Samuel Hatton "A courageous moment is always tied to an emotion" - Samuel Hatton "I ask for wise council"- Samuel Hatton "Adventure is taking your life to the next level, and enjoying the nuances of the process"- Samuel Hatton What you will learn in this episode: -How to get more confidence -How to have more bravery in your life -When and how to use willpower -How to deal with the emotion and risk of a new venture -The difference in confidence for different people -How to identify the specific fear you are feeling Continue the adventure: Courageous Self Confidence Podcast Tony Stubblebine Thanks Samuel Hatton!
