A lesson I learned in a sad way. Then tending to the outside holiday decorating turned the sadness into laughs and happy tears as we decorated Ellie's memorial tree – a replacement one as the Blue Spruce that served as a Christmas tree died. We talk about the attributes of Ilex Opaca and the mystery of a 'Mary Holman' American Holly that became the replacement tree. But it, too, showed signs of severe decline and was at risk of dying. But TLC helped turn it around.  We wrap up with the lesson that there is beauty in imperfection.  Link to Related Stories:Holiday Decoration ReflectionsNeedle Cast on Ellie's Memorial Tree Ball and Burlap versus Potted Tree   Decorating with Leave Behinds (aka "Road Kill" - smile) A story about Bill's Weeping Hemlock in Merry Christmas Memories ***I'd love to hear about your garden and nature stories. What's not to love about sedums? They're drought-tolerant, they attract pollinators, and they flower later in the season when not much else is going on in the garden. But they also have their drawbacks—namely a proclivity to splay open (we're looking at you Autumn Joy) and look rather awful in some cases. But rest assured that today we're talking about sedums that maintain a compact habit (whether they're an upright or ground cover type), still sport gorgeous flowers, and thrive in terrible conditions. If you have full sun, lean soil, and hate plants than need a lot of pampering, then this episode is for you.  Expert testimony: Sandy McDougle is the founder and owner of Sandy's Plants in in Mechanicsville, Virginia.   Danielle's Plants 'Boogie Woogie' sedum (Sedum ‘Boogie Woogie', Zones 3-9)  'Night Light' sedum (Sedum 'Night Light', Zones 3-9)  'Plum Dazzled' sedum (Sedum rupestre ‘Plum Dazzled', Zones 4-9)  ‘Carl' sedum (Hylotelephium telephium ‘Carl', Zones 3-9)    Carol's Plants ‘Matrona' sedum (Hylotelephium telephium 'Matrona', Zones 3-9) ‘Blue Spruce' creeping sedum (Sedum reflexum ‘Blue Spruce', Zones 4–9) Dragon's blood sedum (Sedum spurium 'Schorbuser Blut', Zones 4-9) ‘Angelina' sedum (Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina', Zones 5–9)   Expert's Plants ‘Dazzleberry' sedum (Sedum ‘Dazzleberry', Zones 4-9) Goldmoss sedum (Sedum acre, Zones 4-9) Chinese sedum (Sedum tetractinum, Zones 4-8) ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold' sedum (Sedum kamtschaticum var. floriferum ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold', Zones 3-8)

For over two decades, family constellations facilitator and therapist Lisa Iversen has been working with groups, including descendants of ancestors who have perpetrated harm or been victimized in circumstances of injustice. This work has led to a timely and thoughtful discussion about the intersection of gender and white privilege, a collection of essays that brings together twelve white women who explore the role of whiteness in collective moments of immigration, colonialism, slavery, and war. In Whiteness Is Not an Ancestor, these writers from the US, Canada, and the UK disentangle themes of innocence, grief, race, privilege, and belonging in their families and ancestries. Iversen joined us, along with two contributors to the collection—essayists June BlueSpruce and Anne Hayden—in a discussion moderated by Dr. Bonnie Duran, Professor in the UW Schools of Social Work and Public Health. Together, they explored their relationships with whiteness, sharing the genealogical research, family documents, and deep reflections that informed their contributions to the collection. They invited us to engage with difficult truths of history, including concerns about the fate of democratic nations sourced in whiteness—and to continue the work of dismantling racism and healing collective historic trauma. Lisa Iversen is the director of the Center for Ancestral Blueprints and CAB Publishing. She is the author of Ancestral Blueprints: Revealing Invisible Truths in America’s Soul. June BlueSpruce is a writer, intuitive healer, Systemic Family Constellations facilitator, and activist. Her work has been published in a poetry chapbook, several anthologies and journals, and scientific articles. She writes about dreaming, healing, and social change on her blog. Anne Hayden is a student of nature and of the human heart. She has taught and mentored students in the Eco-Psych field through Fairhaven College of WWU and Antioch College. As a trained initiation guide, she has guided nature-based, experiential programs for groups and individuals through Northwest Soul Quest for 25 years. Adam Adams began as a student of mine five years ago. I've had a lot of people come into my rooms, sit down, learn great stuff and say "One day I'm going to do that." NEWSFLASH!!! That's a lie! When we put something off that has us excited we lose that excitement and end up falling into the habits that put us in that class in the first place. Well... Adam was among the different. Among the weird. He actually put plans into place and took massive action. Sometimes he took massive action while making and adjusting his plan (which is most often the case for successful people). Now, Adam is a co-founder of Blue Spruce Holdings. He owns over 1300 rental doors. He syndicates deals and helps other investors actually do what they are thinking about. He hosts and speaks at events that help investors in Denver and around the country. He owns a company that helps Podcasters like me be more successful and owns a different one that provides amazing virtual assistants to people for a fraction of the cost of hiring a local personal assistant. On top of all that... he is a good guy. His heart is moved by service. Enjoy.

Today we celebrate the woman who has been called the greatest painter of plants and insects who ever lived and the birthday of a man who is remembered in the name of one of the most ubiquitous garden plants. We'll learn about an Austrian-American plant explorer who grew to feel his “real” home was in China, and we’ll learn about today’s tradition: Plough Monday - the first Monday after the 12 days of Christmas. Today’s Unearthed Words feature sweet poetry from a little-known woman who lived in Concord Massachusetts; she was a suffragist, animal rights activist, and American poet. We Grow That Garden Library™ with a book that helps us turn our gardens into a sanctuary for restoration and healing. I'll talk about a simple garden item that serves a great purpose and looks great with a simple terra cotta pot, and then we’ll wrap things up with an article from the 1930s about how to propagate a popular houseplant through air layering. But first, let's catch up on a few recent events.   Subscribe Apple | Google | Spotify | Stitcher | iHeart   Curated Articles Around the World in Rare and Beautiful Apples - Gastro Obscura Here's a post about William Mullan, who takes gorgeous photos of Rare and Beautiful Apples. His images will open your eyes to the wider spectrum of varieties of the fruit known as apples.   The giants of Cornell - Cornell College Here is an excellent post - actually, it's a "Tree-tise." Professor of History Catherine Stewart visited eight trees on the hilltop at Cornell College & wrote about each- imagining what they might tell us if they could speak. Her words appear with each tree. Catherine's post features the Cottonwood, the Redbud (Cercis spp.), the Blue Spruce, Larches, Magnolia, Ginkgo, and White Ash.  Here's one of her entries. It is for the Blue Spruce: Botanical name: Picea pungens ("Pie-SEA-ah PUN-gins"). Locations: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is west of King Chapel. A second blue spruce that has been noted for its size is in front of Armstrong Hall. Identification: The blue spruce has a pyramidal shape with horizontal, dense branches with sharp blue needles. The bark is silver, grey, and brown with vertical scales. Known for: Providing homes to wildlife in the winter. Then Catherine writes: Most likely to assist you with time travel if you look long enough, and lean in, and breathe in the elixir of its scent. As a frame of reference, Isaac Newton was only a few years older than her. Unlike Newton, Merian’s work was largely forgotten over time. However, during the past century, her work has made its way to us. In 2011, Janet Dailey, a retired teacher, and artist from Springfield, Illinois, became so captivated by Merian’s life story that she started a Kickstarter campaign to follow Merian’s footsteps to the mecca of her best work - Surinam, in South America. And, in 2013, Merian's birthday was commemorated with a "Google Doodle.” Merian would have delighted in our modern-day effort to plant milkweed for the Monarchs. The concept that insects and plants are inextricably bound together was not lost on Merian. In her work, she carefully noted which caterpillars were specialists - the ones that ate only one kind of plant. (You can relate to that concept if your kid only wants to eat Mac and cheese; Hey - they aren't picky - they're specialists.) For centuries, drawings like Merian's were a holy grail for plant identification. One look at Merian’s work, and Linneaus immediately knew it was brilliant. Merian helped classify nearly 100 different species long after she was gone from the earth. To this day, entomologists acknowledge that the accuracy in her art is so good they can identify many of her butterflies and moths right down to the species level! Between 1716 and 1717, during the last year of her life, Merian was visited multiple times by her friend, artist Georg Gsell - and his friend Peter the Great. Oh, to be a fly on the wall for THAT meetup. Gsell ended up marrying Merian’s youngest daughter, Dorothea Maria, and Peter the Great ended up with 256 Merian paintings. In fact, Peter the Great so loved Merian's paintings, that when she died shortly after his last visit, he quickly sent an agent to buy up every one of her remaining watercolors. The agent was on the case. He bought her entire collection and then promptly brought all of them back to St. Petersburg where they remain to this day.   1761   Today is the anniversary of the death of the Austrian botanist and physician Nicolaus Thomas Host. Host was the physician to the Austrian emperor in Vienna. The genus Hosta was named for Host by Austrian botanist Leopold Trattinnick in 1812. Hostas were brought to Europe by the Dutch nurseryman Philipp Franz Von Siebold. He had visited Japan and brought specimens back to his Leiden Nursery. This is why Hosta Sieboldiana is a famous prefix to so many hosta varieties. Hostas are dependable and tough. They are undemanding herbaceous perennials that give us lush greenery in shady spots. Hostas belong to the Asparagaceae family along with Asparagus, Agave, Lily of the Valley, Sansevieria, Yucca, and Hyacinth. The common name for hosta is plantain lilies - they used to belong to the lily family. Nicholas Host died in 1834.   1884  Today is the birthday of the renowned Austrian-American botanist and explorer Joseph Rock. Joseph was born in Austria but ended up immigrating to the United States and eventually settled in Hawaii, where he was beloved. Joseph became Hawaii's first official botanist. He started teaching as a professor of Botany at the University of Hawaii in 1911. he also served as a botanist for the Hawaiian territorial Board of agriculture. He served in these capacities during his first 13 years in Hawaii and then got about the business of exploring China, which was his primary passion. He left Honolulu in 1920. He always said that he considered China to be his “real” home, “Where life is not governed by the ticking of the clock but by the movement of celestial bodies.” Joseph spent much of his adult life - more than 20 years - in southwestern China. There were many instances where he was the first explorer to enter many of the locations he visited. Joseph became so embedded in the country that there were many times that his counterparts in other parts of the world thought that he might have died in the Tibetan or Yunnan ("YOU-nan") mountains.  After World War II, Joseph had to be evacuated by plane from the Yunnan province. Joseph recounted many hair-raising stories from his time in China. One time he had collected plants along the base of Mount Gongga ("Gan-GAH") in China's Tibetan Borderland. Mount Gongga is known as "The King of Sichuan ("SITCH-ooh- an") Mountains. One spring, Joseph had great luck collecting around the base of Mount Gongga. When he returned in the fall, Joseph asked the tribal King for permission to go as far as the foot of the peak. Halfway up Mount Gongga, a runner caught up to Joseph and his guides with a letter from the King. Apparently, after their first collecting trip, a severe hail storm had destroyed the fields of the tribe that lived near the mountain range. The tribe blamed the catastrophe on Joseph Rock and his party. They believed that the deity of the mountains was not pleased; the tribe considered the mountains to be sacred. If Joseph and his party were to continue up the mountain, they would certainly be killed. The King requested that Joseph abort the trip - which he did. In addition to plants, Joseph had a knack for languages. He cataloged and transcribed Chinese manuscripts and actually wrote a dictionary of one of the tribal languages. He had an enormous intellect and was multi-talented. In addition to being a botanist, he was a linguist. He was also regarded as a world-expert cartographer, ornithologist, and anthropologist. From a gardening standpoint, it was Joseph Rock who first introduced blight-resistant Chestnut trees to America. He had sourced them in China, and he also brought us more than 700 species of rhododendron. Some of his original rhododendron seeds were successfully grown in the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. How could we ever thank him enough for that? In the year before Joseph died, he was granted an honorary doctor of Science degree from the University of Hawaii. He died at the age of 79.   2020  Well, it's official, the holidays are over - today is Plough Monday. Plough Monday is regarded as the traditional start to the agricultural year and the official end to the holiday season. Plough Monday is always the first Monday after the 12th night of Christmas, and it represented  "men's work". For centuries, Plough Monday represented the day that agricultural workers returned to the fields after resting over the Christmas season. On Plough Monday, farmers would bring their ploughs to church so that they could be blessed.    Unearthed Words 1847  Today is the birthday of the suffragist, animal rights activist, and American poet Hannah Rebecca Hudson. Not much is known about the life of Hannah Hudson, but gardeners love her poetry.  Hannah’s beloved poem called “April,” was featured in The Atlantic Monthly, April 1868: "April has searched the winter land And found her petted flowers again She kissed them to unfold her leaves, She coaxed them with her sun and rain, And filled the grass with green content, And made the woods and clover vain.” — Her crocuses and violets Give all the world a gay “Good year.” Tall irises grow tired of green, And get themselves a purple gear; — She fills the dusk of deepest woods With vague sweet sunshine and surprise, And wakes the periwinkles up To watch her with their wide, blue eyes. — And when she sees the deeper suns That usher in the happy May, She sighs to think her time is past, And weeps because she cannot stay; So leaves her tears upon the grass, And turns her face and glides away. In 1874, when she was 27, Hannah published a book of her original poetry. Hannah was a charter member of the Woburn Women's Club. At the age of 74, Hannah died sitting at her aunt’s kitchen table in Woburn, Massachusetts. Hannah is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.   Grow That Garden Library Creating Sanctuary by Jessi Bloom This book is a favorite of mine. Rosemary Gladstar, the herbalist and author, said this about Jessi’s book: “In this beautiful, inspiring, and practical book, we are invited to look deeply at the landscape around us and create sacred respites from our busy worlds.” Creating Sanctuary is about creating a garden that will nourish your spiritual and emotional well-being. Jessi's beautiful book is chock full of ideas. She will help you discover ways to have a deeper connection with your garden. You'll discover the powerful and beneficial properties of plants, and learn how to incorporate nature-based routines and rituals. To do this, a V-shaped cut is made in the branch, almost severing it. The cut should be made near the growing tip. A wedge is then inserted to keep the cut open. Bind the wound all around with sphagnum moss, tying with raffia or cord. Keep this bandage quite moist, never allowing it to dry out, and keep the plant in a warm place. In a month or six weeks, small white roots will appear. Then the new plant is cut from the parent and planted in a pot of Its own without removing the moss bandage. The place where it is cut from the large plant may be rubbed with a little dry sulfur, and it will quickly heal. The young plant in a five or six-inch pot should be kept shaded for a week when it may be brought into the light and watered. January to May is the time of the year most seasonable for this work, but it may be done with varying success the year-round.“ Rubber Plants (Ficus elastica) are a popular ornamental houseplant plant from the Ficus genus. For gardeners looking for a tree-type plant species with attractive large foliage, the Rubber Plant is an excellent choice. It is also a great low-light specimen. Water your rubber plant once a week and clean leaves monthly.

Hello there and welcome to The Crochet Circle Podcast and the show notes for Episode 44 – Go Garment Go.    My name is Fay and this is my audio and video podcast for those that love fibre crafts, particularly crochet.  It’s a community for people that like to support their fellow humans regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, size or age. I hope you feel the welcome embrace and love of the Crochet Clan.  Come on in and stay awhile.    In this episode, I cover Old Dog new tricks; Perth Project Runway update; Final Destination; En Route; Feeding the habit; Quick News Beats and J’adore.   This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co.  Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon: 1 – Old Dog New Tricks Have you ever looked to buy a skein of variegated yarn and struggled to see how it might look crocheted up?  I know that work has been done on how stocking stitch knits up and it’s because of SpaceCadet’s brilliant blogpost that I am doing this work for crochet.   Many yarn dyers have samples of their yarns knitted up but fewer do that same for crochet.  I am pleased to report though that this is changing and more crochet is being sighted as swatches and samples at the yarn shows I am attending.  We are having a positive impact! Reading a skein of variegated could really help you to work out whether it is going to work for you or not.  I have done some of the work for you, but if you really want an accurate gauge, you need to do some swatching too!  I have written and illustrated this for you in a blog post: 'How to read a skein of variegated yarn for crochet'.   As a rough guide, here is how many centimetres each stitch takes in 4 ply and DK, my favourite two weights of yarn: 4 ply/light fingering weight dc (US sc) uses about 3 - 3.5cm per stitch using a 3mm hook 4 ply/light fingering weight htr (US hdc) uses about 4.5 - 5cm per stitch using a 3mm hook 4 ply/light fingering weight tr (US dc) uses about 6 – 6.5cm per stitch using a 3mm hook DK dc (US sc) uses about 5cm per stitch using a 4.5mm hook. DK htr (US hdc) uses about 7cm per stitch using a 4.5mm hook. DK tr (US dc) uses about 9cm per stitch using a 4.5mm hook. So, next time you are thinking about buying a variegated yarn in person, you can measure the length of each colour change (you will need to take a little measuring tape with you) to see whether the colour changes are right for you.   As a general rule, I prefer variegated yarns with quick colour changes for crochet.  I think that it leads to a nicer looking, more cohesive finished project.  You may prefer otherwise, and either way, it’s good to understand where your preference lies so that you buy yarn that you are more likely to want to use.    Please don’t just walk into a yarn shop or to a yarn vendor at a show and start opening out their skeins of yarn.  If you ask them nicely, they will most likely be happy for you un-skein the yarn and take a look at it.  Often there are hidden colours inside anyway that you may not see when it is all twisted up.    2 – Perth Project Runway update The votes are now closed on the five garments that I short-listed (I have kept the list below in case you want to take another look at them).  The top that won by one vote (between Instagram and Ravelry votes counted at midnight on Thursday 13th June) was Blurred Lines by Deanne at Addydae Designs.  This was a pattern that was suggested time and time again by many of you and so I am unsurprised that it came out as the favourite.  The Citizen Pullover by Kabila Sri Punnusamy (Tunisian crochet) was the next favourite.   ALT TEXT: Blurred Line jumper is being worn outside.  It is a light grey with a faded core down the trunk and arms of a light grey/teal variegated yarn.   ALT TEXT: Citizen Pullover is being worn outside beside a city building.  It is a light grey with coral pink stripes running on diagonals.  Quite a long pullover with short sleeves.   1 – Citizen Pullover by Kabila Sri Ponnusamy 2 – Liza Pullover by Yuliya Tkacheva 3 – Blurred Lines by Addydae Designs 4 – Bark Sweater by Sidsel Sangild 5 – Bruni Top by Elven Handmade   On the Friday of Woollinn Festival of Yarn I scooted over the marquee to see Bernie at Bear in Sheep's Clothing to choose a variegated yarn to go with the teal blue that she had custom dyed for me.  This was the day that Bernie was launching this new base which is called Corrie Halo (50% Corriedale and 50% Mohair).      ALT TEXT: Semi tonal blue yarn with a real halo to it and it’s called ‘Sprucey Bonus’ because it is the colour of the underside of a Spruce Tree.  It is paired with a yarn called ‘Sulk’ and is on an ecru pink base with small patches of teal blue, acid yellow, sea green and plummy purples.      I know that when Stasia made her version of Blurred Lines, it took three weeks and she was working on it almost constantly.  Although I have until the 6th September to get this jumper crocheted, it’s still going to be a tall order with all of the other things I have going on at the moment.   The lovely Catherine asked whether I was going to host a make along for this project.  I wasn’t but I am now!  It’s all very informal and you have from now until 7th September to make or finish off a garment.  WIPs are allowed, it can be in any craft and any garment pattern, you just need to use the #crochetcirclemal and I have also opened a Ravelry thread for you to add to.   3 – Final Destination I only have one FO to show you, my latest version of the Arria shawl.  I finally finished this just before I headed up to Cumbria to vend at Woolfest last weekend.    This version is in John Arbon Textiles Harvest Hues (4ply/light fingering 400m/100g) in shades Russet and Blue Spruce and I am loving the shawl in solid colours.   ALT TEXT:  White background with a vintage mannequin covered in the Arria shawl.  It has a deep V front with dark petrol blue triangle segments running in a spine up the centre of the shawl.  The rest of the shawl is in a russet brown/orange colour.    4 – En Route Monogamous me means that I am just working on the Blurred Lines jumper at the moment as a personal project.  There is a design project on the go at the moment but I will show you that in a future episode.  So, for the next couple of episodes, it may just be all about Blurred Lines because it needs up to 600g of 4 ply yarn  - that’s 2,400m of yarn to crochet!    So, here’s my progress so far.  I have completed the neck ribbing and the second round of increases.  I keep on trying the project on to make sure it fits nicely.  If you are interested in making one of these, I am making notes for each stage that I pass through in my Ravelry project.  If you want to take a look, simply search for ‘Perth Project Runway Blurred Lines’ under projects.  I will also be adding updates to Ravelry.   ALT TEXT: The collar and beginnings of a yolk in a mid teal blue sit on a grey background.  To the right is  a small ball of the same coloured yarn and above is a cake of the variegated pinky/ecru yarn which is the contrast colour.   I am hoping to get to the contrast colour in the next couple of days and am intrigued to see how the variegated skein will work up.   Deanne, the designer of Blurred Lines is an absolute star and has offered up some free patterns.  To be in with a chance of winning one of her brilliantly written patterns, simply leave a comment in YouTube, Ravelry (there is a specific thread called Garment Make Along in time for Perth Festival of Yarn) or on the Instagram post for Episode 44 over @crochet_circle_podcast   5 – Feeding the Habit Oooh, it has been a bit of a month and all of my purchases probably seem ridiculous, but I have plans, oh yes, I have plans!! Mwahahahahahahaaaa!   My biggest plan of all is that I have signed up to a solstice to solstice yarn ban with a friend.  So, design yarn aside, I won’t be buying any yarn until the winter solstice on the 21st December.    In 2017 I only bought design yarn, so know that I can manage 6 months.  It is time to work through some of my stash!   ALT TEXT: Two handmade bags on a grey background.  The one on the left has a deep brown base and the top is bold autumnal coloured flowers and seed heads with a drawstring.  Little balls of different coloured fibres are spilling out of the top and some ocean-inspired stitch markers are nearby.  The bag to the right has a material handle and is cream with shop fronts of cafes and coffee shops.   These two bags were lovely gifts from friends.  Marceline and I agreed way back at Edinburgh Yarn Festival to do a bag swap as we both aim to improve our machine sewing skills.  The date was set for when she was over vlogging Woollinn Festival of Yarn. You can catch up with Marce’s trip to Dublin and the festival from her YouTube Channel.  While I was vending at this festival – one of the friendliest I have ever been to – I was also given a bag by Sophie from A Spring Snowflake Podcast.  I am so spoiled!   Then there is some yarn!  I have been at the John Arbon Open Mill Weekend, Woollinn Festival of Yarn and Woolfest in the last month.  Here is what has come in.  The John Arbon wool is a mill special; before the open weekend they spin various colours together, so they are one-offs and sometimes move into a bit of a fade.  I bought a jumper’s worth of this in a 4 ply and it will fade from a blue and cream into teal and cream. I also have a jumper’s quantity of the undyed Romney that I initially bought for my knitted Canisp jumper.  I finished Canisp and the shape didn’t look right on me but looked fab on Juliet and she insisted on replacing the finished jumper with the means for me to make myself another. The Romney Sportweight is now destined to become a Bark Sweater which will be my next crocheted garment after I have finished Blurred Lines.    ALT TEXT: Four skeins of marled yarn on a grey background.  The skeins are all marled with a grey/cream but fade from teal to blue.   ALT TEXT: THree skeins of a mushroom brown wool lie on a grey background.  The labels have sheep on them and sat Romney.  The twist of the yarn is obvious and squishy.   At Woollinn I picked up a couple of skeins for a one-skein shawl design that I am working on.  The first is a beautiful blend of Alpaca and silk from Tara at Irish Artisan Yarns.  I love that Tara is inspired by the colours of her home turf of the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland.  The second is a skein of Alpa-Si-Li (50% Alpaca, 25% silk, 25% linen) in colourway Passion, by Dye Dye Done.  I was vending along from both of these lovely vendors at Woollinn which was an absolute delight.  Dye Dye Done is a husband and wife team.  Hanna is an extremely talented knitwear designer and Daniel is the yarn dyer – what a duo!  They also have vegan yarns.     ALT TEXT: Grey background with a skein of pale, delicate and luxurious yarn at the front from Irish Artisan Yarns.  It is pink, purple and grey.  Behind it sits a ball of yarn with the tail pulled forward.  It's plummy purple/scarlet with silver slivers running through it.   On our way up to Woolfest in Cumbria, we stopped off at Blackwell Arts and Crafts House.  It is a stunning example of arts and crafts architecture and interior design and well worth a visit.  It’s right beside Lake Windermere.  While I was there, I picked up a Japanese book on embroidery called ‘Simply Stitched’ by Yumiko Higuchi which is stuffed full of beautiful projects that you can use odds and ends of wool and cotton for.    ALT TEXT: Grey background with the 'Simply Stitched' book lying flat.  The front cover shows examples of embroidery motifs (trees, flowers, a chicken), all sewn with wool thread.    6 – Quick News Beats 1 - Global Hook Up – I have set the dates for the next six months and will stick to the 8 pm GMT/BST on a Saturday night and 9 am GMT/BST on a Sunday morning. The details for the next sessions are already up in the Ravelry thread, can also be found below and will be put out on Instagram in advance. The meeting ID number is 475-047-5819 and you will need to join via Zoom which you can do here:  https://www.zoom.us/join If you are joining on your phone or tablet you will likely need to download the software in advance.  If you are joining from a PC or Mac, you can join via the link above.  Everyone needs to use the same ID number to get into the session.  July – Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August - Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September - Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd   October - Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th   November - Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th   December - Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th   2 – The good folk behind The Craft Bank on Ravelry, Lisa and Sophie are hosting a gift-along.  You just need to go to The Craft Bank Group on Ravelry and fill in the very quick online survey that is linked and then you will be paired up with a partner.  I have already signed up, so some lucky, lucky soul will be getting a dodgy project bag from me… 3 –  I have a handful of yarn shows left that I am vending at in 2019 and the next one to let you know about is Yarnfolk in Northern Ireland on Saturday 3rd of August.  It’s a one-day show in Whitehead (accessible via train from Belfast) and is such a friendly show.  This will be my third year vending there, which says a lot really.   7 – J’adore While I was up in the Lake District with my friend Annabel, our lovely hosts Sarian and Andrew took us for a picnic to Derwent Water.  It was a cracking evening by the lakeshore and I went swimming! In the lake!   ALT TEXT: A lake with mountains in the background.  Some stones are in the foreground with various people out swimming and a man and his dog on a paddle board.  I am one of the swimmers!   I am now a little obsessed with the idea of wild swimming.  It wasn’t as cold as you might think!  My very lovely Papa Bear has asked me to go to Iceland with him in November, so I see a lot of trips to geothermal plunge pools and outdoor pools in my future.    I will be back on Friday the 2nd of August. This time, we sat down with the man, the myth, the legend, Mikaelin ‘Blue’ Bluespruce (@mixedbyblue). Blue is a Grammy Winning Engineer and record producer, a top respected name in the industry, and most importantly, a new father and a stand-up gentleman. Blue is a relatively reserved, calm dude, much like myself, but for the next 90 or so minutes we are going to take about how he is quietly making a dent in the music game with a nonstop work ethic. He has worked with prominent artists like Solange, Skepta, and those involved on the Hamilton Mixtape. Style-wise, Blue does not look like your typical engineer. This dude dresses fly as heck to show up to the studio with the tapered joggers, fade on point, sneaker game stupid, and that’s who he is. He brings his own brand to the beat beyond just the moves he makes in the studio. When Blue touches a track, you know it’s him, and he’s here to tell you how he developed his own unique aesthetic. In this episode, Blue discusses his early creative experiences with music, the routine that leads to greatness, the creative process with Solange, pulling all-nighters in NYU studios, the flow state of engineering, and more. Through the use of social media Adam has built a powerful network that has allowed his business to grow and succeed. Adam shares with us some keys to grow your network as well as some traps to avoid. Adam Adams has educated hundreds of thousands of investors through hosting conferences, radio & podcast interviews, speaking, mastermind groups, meetups, and his coaching program. He is the organizer of one of the most famous and highest rated Meetups in the world and the host of the Creative Real Estate Podcast. Adam's efforts to educate and inspire other investors has earned him the prestigious title "Master Investor of The Year" from Think Realty and the "Adds Incredible Value" award from Lifetime Cashflow. He is also a 3X Hall Of Fame winner in RE Mentor for his successes in multifamily syndications. Adam got his start in real estate through investing in Tax Deeds way back in 2005. Soon after buying a piece of land and getting the annual tax bill in the mail, Adam realized that true financial freedom wasn't created merely by owning a piece of real estate but through cash-flow. So in 2007 and 2008, Adam utilized creative strategies to get involved into his first cash-flowing multifamily apartments. Today Adam is partnered in over $50 million of multifamily real estate. Together with his company, BlueSpruce, Adam focuses on finding cash-flowing apartment communities for passive investors. 3 golden Nuggets: Follow what others are doing no saying Build a social network Create a team that fills your weaknesses Book mentioned: Best Ever Apartment Syndication Book by Joe Fairless Connect with Adam Admas: www.realbluespruce.com Connect with Pillars Of Wealth Creation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/PillarsofWealthCreation/ Visit www.coachwithdex.com for to have a free coaching discovery call. Marsha talks about learning agility and piano and Kelly is getting close to the end of a semester of learning. Full notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of  our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com.  Join the community on Ravelry and discuss the episode, or contact us with your thoughts at twoewes@twoewesfiberadventures.com Kelly's Projects Kelly finished the Running Water cardigan and has worn it three times.  The fit is great and it is so soft and warm. Since the last episode she started and finished a pair of Jo’s Perfect Slipper Socks. Two strands of fingering weight. From Cozy Up knits. Found out about it from the Cozy Up Knits youtube show. Four Canadian Prairie sisters who knit and design patterns. Kelly has also started a gift knit. She’s making the Unice Unicorn Hood for her grandniece.  The hood is done, she is now putting on the fringe that makes the mane.  She is making it as a horse and not putting on the unicorn horn. Marsha's Projects Marsha has made very little progress on her existing projects. Slack Tide -  Poststitch Rabbit - Claire Garland Cloud Cover - Heidi Kirrmaier She is getting “back on the horse” by knitting a pair of “vanilla” socks with Austerman Step with heels and toes in Knit Picks Stroll. Both are spirit yarns from the NoCKRs detash room. Learn Along Catherine Knuttson, (smallbirdworkshop on Ravelry) has donated patterns. Her website is smallbirdworkshop.com where she has yarn and patterns.  Her patterns are also available on Ravelry.  Marsha and I each were given a code for a pattern, too.  I’m looking hard at Blue Spruce, but haven’t made a decision yet. She has a collection of patterns that are good for variegated yarns.  Check out her pattern page on Ravelry. Patron Drawing We randomly selected a Daring Adventurer to win the drawing! If you'd like to become a patron, visit patreon.com/twoewes One of our patrons contacted us about the Weavolution online weaving guild and website.  Kelly joined but hasn’t had a chance to poke around on the website yet. They have groups and patterns and classes available for purchase. Book Giveaway ends December 16. Stephany Wilkes has donated a copy of her book Raw Material: Working Wool in the West. Make a comment in the thread on our Two Ewes Ravelry Group to be entered. Stephany has another book event at Books Inc. in Berkeley, California on January 8, 2019 at 7 pm.  In February she will be speaking at the Treadles to Threads guild meeting February 27 in Contra Costa. Marsha got to see Stephany in Seattle at the  Eileen Fisher Renew store for a reading of her book Raw Material: Working Wool in the West and a panel discussion.  Also on the panel was Kathy Hatori of Botanical Colors. Her dyes are used as overdyes for Renew. She has a studio located in Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. She sells natural dyes for designers and artists. Eileen Fisher Renew  takes back clothes with a $5 credit. They repair, overdye, reconstruct and then resell the recycled clothing online and in stores. Marsha also talked about the New York Times article about American Giant trying to make flannel in US.  The Annals of Flannel. And speaking of flannel and fabric. Kelly has sewing acquisitions! She purchased some Huston Textiles climate beneficial cloth (red), and some Vreseis brown cotton flannel.  She already has natural climate beneficial cloth.  A fabric stash is forming. Sally Fox, owner of Vreseis was recently interviewed on Yarn Stories Podcast  by Miriam Felton.   Our email address is twoewes@twoewesfiberadventures.com   We’d love to hear from you!

Did you know the blue spruce is my favorite tree? Conveniently, Adam Adams, multifamily real estate investment wizard, calls his business The Real Blue Spruce, and he’s truly one of my favorite guests I’ve brought on this podcast. He’s on track to build a multifamily empire in Denver, and the nuggets of wisdom he shares today are really going to blow your mind. Adam was introduced to real estate early by his stepdad. But it wasn’t until he read Kiyosaki’s book that his whole mindset finally shifted. He started to think like an investor instead of an employee and it really transformed his whole strategy. And his unique real estate investment strategy is what we’re talking about today. Adam Adams approaches real estate very differently than some of us. He’s not on the phone calling brokers every day. He’s not putting out signs or sending out text messages. Adam and his crew with The Blue Spruce Group are using social media to connect with investors and brokers all over Colorado. In fact, it’s podcasting that actually got Adam to the place he is today. It just so happens that these podcasts connect him with brokers who want to make deals with a guy who clearly knows what he’s talking about. Putting yourself out there and connecting with people just like you can really multiply the amount of clients you work with and properties you sell. We close out today’s episode with Adam’s top three pieces of advice for new investors. Don’t be afraid to get started, don’t be afraid to think big, and always, always be consistent. These are really simple but so powerful it’d be a shame if you didn’t incorporate them and the rest of Adam’s advice today into your own real estate investing strategy. Download This Awesome Podcast: http://bit.ly/2VZCacC We had the pleasure of interviewing with owner of Blue Spruce, Adam Adams. Along with Blue Spruce, Adam runs multiple business that vary from lending hard money to producing a weekly podcast. Adam has an amazing story and shared with us valuable information about mindset, networking, and persistence. Thank you Adam! GETTING STARTED: "I got started in real estate because of my father. He owns storage units and has always had rentals. He did a lot of fix and flip but we lived there. We would move into a place, put up walls, and redo some electricity then move out and rent it. I always thought that was normal. My Dad made read a book called Rich Dad Poor Dad, which hopefully everybody's heard of. If you haven't definitely pick it up. In 2005 my start in real estate was a tax deed. So I bought it for $100 with my Dad and we sold it for 12k and I got to keep all the proceeds. That was really my start in real estate." WHAT IS YOUR MINDSET "Taking action has always been a part of me. Maybe it was my mother that instilled in my heart and brain that I could do anything I want. I believe it whole heartily. I believe that any human being out there, anybody listening, if you want to buy 10,000 units in the next ten years, there's no problem with that. Just take whatever your goal is and start to think of all of the details then work backwards. Who do I need to meet, what do I need to learn, what do I need to wear? Make all those details happen and you can achieve your goals way easier than you think.  HOW ARE YOU FAILING "We fail big everyday, we have been failing big since the beginning. I know I will fail again tomorrow, and it'll be big. But the way I get through all challenges is by keeping the vision alive. We are always looking at where we will be. We go through it, over it, around it, or under it. Or you just turn around and find the path of least resistance." Hello my lovelies!   Welcome to The Crochet Circle Podcast and the show notes from Episode Twenty - Flappy Socks.   In this episode I cover: Old dog, new tricks; FOs; WIPs; Festival of Finishing CrAL; #BackToSchoolSweaterCAL; Feeding the habit; Big up and What's good?   This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co.  Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon:   1 - Old dog, new tricks Having heard lots of radio adverts for the magazine app 'Readly' I was intrigued to see what it was all about.  This was also hot on the heels of me learning from Alyson at the Keep Calm and Carry Yarn Podcast that her local library (Edinburgh) has free subscriptions to libraries through a different app (I have looked into this and very few UK libraries actually offer this service).   Already a subscriber to Spotify, I figured that Readly would work in the same way - it doesn't!  You can sign up five more friends or family members to the service and they don't appear to need to live at the same address.  I have offered this out around Woolgathering and my friend Jenny also has one of my five subscription spots.   CAVEAT - Having recorded the podcast I went to download the latest Simply Crochet magazine and it wasn't there.  Nor was Mollie Makes...   I emailed Readly and they say that those publications are no longer available but that they have lots of other craft titles.  They seem to have started doing Crochet Now instead which is good news but still means that what has gone out in the podcast is a) inaccurate and b) annoying.  I will still subscribe to this because there are so many titles to download, especially if you enable lots of different countries as you can then get magazines from there too.   2 - Finished Objects  There is a bit of a sock theme this month.  Had you noticed?  I have really enjoyed making the Socks Yeah! (shade is 102 Ammolite) version of the Gorman Street Toe-Up Socks from Step Into Crochet.  I can't say the same for the Regia version which is why I have only made one of them.  This yarn split with almost every stitch.  I like the end product, the sock is squishy and warm but the process very frustrating.  I have previously knitted and crocheted socks with a different Regia 4 ply yarn and didn't have these problems.  Tonight I was at Woolgathering Sandbach (the crafting group that I run) and Sam had just finished knitting a pair using Regia 4 ply and had the same issues.     In advance of a full book review on Step Into Crochet next month, I wanted to set out the rib changes that I made: Larger ankles - stick to the pattern and keep a turning chain at the top of the rib - this is what I did with the Regia sock on the left and you can see that it is 'flappy' Medium ankles - try only doing the turning chain on every other rib at the top.  This leads to a tighter rib with good elasticity (see the middle sock) but it was still too loose for me.   Thin ankles - don't do a turning chain at the top of the rib at all.  This is how I got a good fit at the top of my socks (see the third sock).   I also finished off my Rambling Friends Socks from my Fibre Friends Podcast kit.  The yarn was dyed by Adrienne (Old Oak Yarns), the pattern was created by Louise (Louise Patterson on Ravelry) and I kept it all in my Evertote bag made by Caroline and Kathy.  These were lovely to work on - the yarn was squishy and vibrant, the pattern was great (I loved the simple lace detail at the back) and my project bag had mustard and teal birds on it, a winning combination.     My final FO is a crocheted shawl of my own design.  It's called Basalt and is 100% inspired by the hexagonal geological features that you get throughout the world.  This version is crocheted with John Arbon Textiles Knit By Numbers 4 ply (2 x 100g skeins and one mini skein).  The pattern is on Ravelry now and if you use the code TCC50% between 1st and 30th September 2017 you will get 50% off making it £1.75.     The pattern covers crocheting this both bottom-up and top-down and has a private YouTube tutorial that is only available to those that have purchased the pattern.     3 - Works in progress I only have one WIP this month.  I have been pattern testing a cushion cover for Jo jo Twinkletoes.  I haven't previously tried the basketweave stitch and this was the perfect project for it.  The pattern will be free of charge and go live on Jo's blog the second weekend of September and I should be able to show it off as an FO in the next episode.     I also talked about the future WIPs that I will be working on in the coming month.  More socks, in the form of the Mordecai Socks from Step Into Crochet but this time using West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply and Lang Yarns Jawoll (with the reinforcement thread because the socks won't last very long without it).      4 - Festival of Finishing The response to the CAL has been fantastic.  As I type out these notes it is 00:19 on the 1st September and I know that we reached the target of 150 FOs about an hour ago and there are more FOs to be added to the Ravelry thread.  I am so proud of the fact that between us all we have raised a load of money for Knit for Peace.  I will be able to give you a total number of projects and £ raised in the next podcast. Thank you.    I finally finished my Uncia shawl, knitted in John Arbon's Harvest Hues in colourway Blue Spruce.  It was a bit of an effort to get this finished but the sheepy smell of the wool kept me going.  I have just washed and blocked this and it is beautiful and still smells sheepy - lush.        5 - Back to School Sweater CAL We have lift-off on the CAL.       I have finally decided on the garment that I am going to start with.  It's the Aberdeen Castle Cable Sweater by Noelle Stiles and I am using Shilasdair Luxury 4 ply for it which has been naturally dyed with Hawthorn berries.   6 - Feeding the habit I have very little for you this month, just some 4 ply from Green Elephant in colourway Gym Nut.  I love this yarn from Fiona and will be using it in a second version of the Criss-cross shawl which will be a CAL with Olann and magazine later in the year.     7 - Big up I have a couple of new podcasts for you to take a look at.  Both are on YouTube. Charlie has a blog and a new crochet podcast.  She's a designer and seems to be pretty much yarn obsessed with a stash that looks like it could start to rival mine... The second is Grace from Babbles Travelling Yarn Podcast.  She is great fun to watch even if you aren't a knitter - one of those dafties that can always cheer you up.   8 - What's Good At the beginning of the month, I was vending at Yarnfolk Festival in Whitehead, Northern Ireland.  What a day!  I was up very early in the morning to catch the ferry from close to my Mum and Dad's house in Scotland and talked crochet and crafting all day long with the friendliest people. I didn't manage to take a single photo while I was there but luckily Lora from Olann and magazine has created a really good vlog of the day showing off the exhibitors.   See you all in October.   Fay x   Instagram: Crochet_Circle_Podcast  Instagram: provenance.craft.co   Instagram: FayDHDesigns YouTube: The Crochet Circle Podcast Crochet Clan on Mighty Network: Invite
