Lang was een zandkorrel het kleinst in de wereld, en Venus het verste. Maar toen wetenschappers door lenzen in microscopen en telescopen gingen kijken, veranderde alles. Zonder de uitvinding van de lens zou onze wereld er totaal anders uit zien. In deze laatste nacht uit de Week van NTR Wetenschap spreekt presentator Renette Kwakkenbos met Tiemen Cocquyt, curator bij het Rijksmuseum Boerhaven in Leiden en wetenschapshistoricus. Hij promoveerde met onderzoek naar de 17e eeuwste microscopen van een van de bekendste Nederlandse wetenschappers: Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. In 1673 duikt Van Leeuwenhoek op 43-jarige leeftijd op, en begint hij aan de lopende band onderzoeken te publiceren. En hij valt op, omdat hij in bovengemiddeld veel detail zijn bevindingen beschrijft. Toen hij een wereld van piepkleine levende beestjes ontdekte in een druppel water uit een sloot, kon men niet meer om hem heen - zeker in een tijd waarin de wetenschap juist steeds verder weg probeerde te kijken, het universum in. Volgens Tiemen toonde hij aan: onder ons is óók nog veel te ontdekken. Antoni van Leeuwenhoek was naast een briljant onderzoeker ook een opvallend figuur, over wie volgens Tiemen veel anekdotes verteld kunnen worden. Zo heeft hij voor onderzoek zijn tanden afgeschraapt, tien dagen lang onafgebroken dezelfde sokken gedragen om tenenkaas te kweken, en zijn eigen sperma geprepareerd. Eén anekdote beleven we live tijdens deze uitzending, een primeur: verslaggever Bram van Diemen gaat langs bij Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, die in extase vertelt over de microscopische werelden die hij heeft gezien. Tiemen pleit ervoor om meer te knutselen, en wetenschap meer te zien als teamwork tussen denkers en doeners. Eigenlijk precies zoals Van Leeuwenhoek deze twee kanten in zich vereenzelvigde om baanbrekende wetenschap te bedrijven.

Today, I have the honor of connecting with Dr. Robynne Chutkan, one of the most recognizable gastroenterologists in the United States. She is also the author of Anti-Viral Gut, one of the books I enjoyed reading most in 2022! Knowledge of the microbiome dates back to the 1600s when Anthony van Leeuwenhoek observed bacteria in his dental plaque through a microscope. However, it has taken us several centuries to understand the interdependence and beneficial nature of those bacteria. The terms "microbiome" and "microbiota" are often used interchangeably. They refer to the organisms and genes that live in and on our bodies, predominantly in the GI tract. Those organisms include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, parasites, and archaea, which, despite their microscopic size, collectively weigh about 4 to 5 pounds.  Today, Dr. Chutkan and I dive deep into the physiology of the microbiome and discuss how that interplays with immunology. We discuss the benefits of hydrochloric acid, the impact of proton pump inhibitors and other medications on gut microbiome health, and the role of dysbiosis and the Estrobolome. We get into how the pharmaceutical industry has influenced both medical practice and the outlook of healthcare providers, and we talk about the impact of sleep, exercise, stress, and alcohol on the gut. Dr. Chutkan also shares top tips from her anti-viral diet book for supporting the gut. Behalve Ook dat Nog! bespreekt het panel van de AD Media Podcast ook de terugkeer van Beau van Ervens Dorens die een sociaal maatschappelijk programma maakt over het Antoni van Leeuwenhoek ziekenhuis, dat gespecialiseerd is in kanker. Dit is wat Beau goed kan, niet uit de hoogte, af en toe een vraag en met de juiste toon, zo vindt het panel eensgezind. En Miljoenenjacht? Daar veroverde de winnares zondag meer dan vier ton. Tot ergernis van Angela de Jong worden na de beslissing om te stoppen nog wél koffertjes opengemaakt om te zien ‘waar de bedragen zitten en wat ze eventueel had kunnen winnen’. Zelfs de ´bank´ werd gevraagd welk bedrag ze had kunnen winnen. En in háár koffer zat maar liefst vijf miljoen. ,,Wordt er toch voor gezorgd dat ze met een rotgevoel naar huis gaat”, aldus Angela de Jong. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVI las provincias septentrionales de los Países Bajos controlados por los Habsburgo se rebelaron contra el monarca, que en aquel momento era Felipe II de España. Esta rebelión, cuya motivación fue religiosa, tuvo importantes consecuencias en la historia de Europa ya que, tras varias décadas de guerra, estas provincias consolidaron su independencia creando un Estado de nuevo cuño: la república de las Siete Provincias Unidas. Se trataba de una entidad política con un sistema de gobierno muy particular, una confederación que combinaba un Gobierno republicano encarnado en los Estados Generales, y una suerte de monarca elegible, el estatúder, que se encargaba de los asuntos militares. Tan pronto como consiguió la independencia, la recién nacida república comenzó a enriquecerse y expandirse por el mundo. La base de su prosperidad fue la apertura y el pragmatismo. Today, I have the honor of connecting with Dr. Robynne Chutkan, one of the most recognizable gastroenterologists in the United States. She is also the author of Anti-Viral Gut, one of the books I enjoyed reading most in 2022! Knowledge of the microbiome dates back to the 1600s when Anthony van Leeuwenhoek observed bacteria in his dental plaque through a microscope. However, it has taken us several centuries to understand the interdependence and beneficial nature of those bacteria. The terms "microbiome" and "microbiota" are often used interchangeably. They refer to the organisms and genes that live in and on our bodies, predominantly in the GI tract. Those organisms include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, parasites, and archaea, which, despite their microscopic size, collectively weigh around four to five pounds.  Today, Dr. Chutkan and I dive deep into the physiology of the microbiome and discuss how that interplays with immunology. We discuss the benefits of hydrochloric acid, the impact of proton pump inhibitors and other medications on the health of the gut microbiome, and the role of dysbiosis and the Estrobolome. We get into how the pharmaceutical industry has influenced both medical practice and the outlook of healthcare providers, and we talk about the impact of sleep, exercise, stress, and alcohol on the gut. He has his Bachelors in biology from Stanford University. As a Rhodes Scholar, he has a DPhil in immunology from Oxford University and an MD from Harvard University. He has published articles in journals such as Nature and The New England Journal of Medicine and in mainstream outlets such as The New York Times. He is the author of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize winning, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, The New York Times best-Seller, The Gene: An Intimate History, and the author of the new book, The Song of The Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and The New Human.
