008. Part 2: How To Turn Lean Back Listeners Into Real Fans, Building Relationships Through Collaboration, and, THE Element To Keep In Your Marketing Plan | feat. Birocratic

ProducerHead

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2024 46:56

Welcome to part two, of this two part episode with Brandon Rowan, aka Birocratic. In case you missed part one of this conversation, Birocratic is a Brooklyn-based producer, making sample-based beats in the vein of ‘70s funk and old-school New York hip hop, augmented by live-recorded bass guitar and synthesizer. Birocratic's Beets albums have topped the Bandcamp hip-hop charts. And Birocratic has toured the US multiple times, including stops at venues like Red Rocks in Colorado. Finally, Birocratic has co-written songs with Grammy-award winning artists. Birocratic currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.If you have not already, I can't recommend enough that you check out part one of this convo we where discussed:- Approaching your creative process through a place of excitement and fun versus hard work.- Lessons learned from giving lessons to other producers.- Motivation.- Making money and its place in artistic development- AND, of course, our mini-listening session, where we played a couple tracks and talked about what we heard. Now, in part two of this conversation, we discuss:- The importance of establishing your own purpose- Appreciating the amount of work behind the scenes of others who appear to be “ahead” of you.- Building Relationships through collaboration.- The state of streaming as it relates to beats.- Building an audience of true fans of what you do.- How Birocratic went from making beats in his dorm room to catching a buzz and developing his career. As you'll hear throughout this conversation, Birocratic has a deep passion for making music. Birocratic continues to explore and expand his horizons while spreading motivation and encouragement to others around him. This conversation is full of ideas to keep you moving forward.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. DECIDE ON YOUR WHY. If you develop your own sense of purpose and direction as to why you are pursuing what is you pursue, you are less likely to be distracted or thrown off of balance by the whims and opinions of others.2. LEAN BACK LISTENERS ARE STEP 1. Do Not Forget: A large quantity of passive consumers is not necessarily a signal that you have a real fan/customer base. If building an audience is something you have decided is a priority (see Gem 1), explore ways in which you can develop direct relationships with people who are interested in what you do.3. DON'T OVEREMPHASIZE VANITY MECTRICSThe gamification of much of what we do and share online can lead us to focus on areas that don't serve our growth and development. It is important to monitor goals and purpose (again, See Gem 1), while ensuring that your efforts are directed to help you reach them.Listen on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Tap in with toru:Substack: Instagram: @torubeattiktok: @torubeatTap in with Birocratic:email: birocratic@gmail.comInstagram: @birocraticTo jump to a specific moment in the conversation:00:00 Introduction 02:20 In It For The Money 02:30 The Value and Importance of Purpose 05:02 Lack of Visibility into The Careers Of Others 05:20 Birocratic's Trajectory and Origin 09:50 Outreach and Hustle (finding places for your music) 11:00 Appreciating the Work of Others You Can't See 11:56 Taking action based on context 12:15 Building Relationships and Offering music in the world and era of tiktok and digital creators 13:08 Honesty about where you are in your career 15:12 Valuing Your Own Music 15:40 Chillhop Music History and Birocratic's Role in its development 19:50 Starting From a Place of Creating Quality/Adopting a Long-Term View 20:30 The rise of other labels following the model demonstrated by Chillhop 20:50 The State of Lofi and Streaming 23:30 Ideas for approaching relationship building 25:40 How Music Works and the Quality of a Music Scene 26:20 Meet Your Internet Friends IRL 27:30 Lean Back Listeners and How to Build an Audience 28:00 Monthly Listeners Talk 28:30 Monthly Listeners v. I am joined by the lovely author and typography professor Indra Kupferschmid to chat about type classification and combining typefaces. We cover why the old systems don't work, and touch on a font matrix. It's a brilliant way by Indra, that tells you how to describe typefaces differently, and helps in making better decision in pairing them. Besides that, Indra also shares: ➡️ how calligraphy taught her why letter forms change when using different writing tools. ➡️ that her student's don't feel that intimidated by combining fonts. ➡️ why popular typefaces like Roboto and Inter work so well and still might stick around for some years. Talking points: 00:00 – Introduction 04:36 – Greeting to Indra Kupferschmid 05:36 – Avoid flipped apostrophes (should look like a 9) 08:01 – Consistent typography makes text easier to understand 11:44 – Categorizing typefaces 16:23 – About historic type classifications 20:07 – Why the old type classification models don't work 22:31 – Filtering Fonts to make it easier to pick one 25:55 – Filtering based on features 27:54 – Terminology is the biggest problem, better describe what you see 28:59 – The Font Matrix 38:04 – Creating contrast 39:50 – Don't use too light typefaces for body text 43:23 – Why are Roboto and Inter so popular for UI design? 48:25 – Why there are so little serif typefaces on screen? 53:59 – Are more typefaces now shown than images? 56:03 – Rapid Round of questions 58:32 – Goodbye

Gretchen has an enormous readership, both in print and online, and her books have sold almost three and a half million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. On the Passion Struck podcast I discuss with Gretchen the life lessons she learned clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. How during that clerkship she realized that her purpose was to become a writer and not a lawyer. How the study of human nature became her purpose and the key to knowing yourself. The difference between happiness and being happy. Her views on how negative experiences influence our happiness. What do mindfulness and compassion have to do with the workplace? Turns out, a lot. Scott Shute is the head of mindfulness and compassion at LinkedIn. Mindfulness has always been important to Scott. He's been meditating since he was 13 years old and feels strongly about the importance of mindfulness.     He's also been at LinkedIn for 8 and 1/2 years. He didn't always have the amazing title of head of mindfulness and compassion, but he was able to create a position that completely aligned with his goals and purpose and with the people oriented focus of LinkedIn. Scott is also the author of The Full Body Yes: Change Your Work and Your World from the Inside Out.    We have a great conversation where we talk about what The Full Body Yes actually means and how LinkedIn is redefining the importance of people and members. Scott's book is a series of stories from his life and the lessons that he's learned. In this show, he shares some of those lessons and some of his life experiences. We talk about learning to trust your gut, shifting your perspective, and so much more.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Scott Shute thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He's been meditating since he was 13. He's been at LinkedIn for about eight and a half years. He wanted to bring mindfulness to work and started leading one meditation class. [05:24] His job is mainstreaming mindfulness and optimizing compassion. [06:58] LinkedIn has an amazing culture, and Scott is helping it to grow. They do everything they can to help their employees including mindfulness. Mental exercises keep us at our best. [07:46] Compassion also shows up in everything they do. It's about how they treat each other. [09:36] Scott shares how customer impact and member experience is first in product development.  [12:07] For Scott, The Full Body Yes means every atom of his being is aligned to something. It's when you have a deep knowing that this is the right thing to do. [14:57] Scott shares a decision-making technique. Our bodies know at a deeper level than our mind. [17:02] When we doubt ourselves the mind is getting in the way. [18:27] We need to learn to trust our gut and trust our bodies to know what's right. [21:01] Being able to shift your perspective from life is happening to you to life is happening for you makes life much more powerful. [24:08] As a divine individual, how can you move from life happening to you to life happening through you? [26:27] Scott shares how he learned to appreciate things that are just for him. He didn't always need external validation. [30:30] Time can be a killer of our good intentions.  [34:42] LinkedIn employees are more important to the company's success than ever. The power of work is being put into the hands of workers. They are trying to move beyond white collar workers to all workers. [37:46] Scott defines compassion as having an awareness for others, a mindset of wishing the best for them, and the courage to take action.  [43:21] Scott goes back to his practice and more in the Rapid Round. He can't wait to get back to live presentations.  [04:18] Staring death in the face has taught Codi about living not dying.  [05:03] Codi's book is about how to show up powerful and with purpose right now. He uses some of the constructs that he had during his career as a funeral director. [07:24] One of the biggest things that Codi was able to reframe was the idea of legacy. Understand how your work impacts those you serve and the impact you make on the world. [11:44] Missed moments are one of the things people regret the most. Sometimes we are so close to things that our perspective is myopic.  [13:15] When someone dies, the perspective changes immediately. Don't leave yourself left with a one-way conversation. [15:17] Journeys can have positive outcomes. There's a difference between being present and having presence.  [18:39] A funeral director can create a relationship in a very short time and help families navigate the death of their loved one. [20:55] What will you be remembered for? What is required to achieve what you want to be remembered for? [23:26] Share with people what you value about them and their lives. [28:39] Codi shares the importance of having conversations and interactions to get the best from a person. Enable those around you to have more presence. For many, the thought of being self-employed is living the dream. Unfortunately, if you don't take the time to get the numbers and the finances right, your dream could turn into a nightmare. There is so much that goes into setting up a business the right way. You need to understand what income and profit really are. You also need to minimize your taxes and protect your assets. Tatiana Tsoir is a speaker, coach, and accounting expert. She is the CEO and founder of Linza Advisors. She has spent the last 15 years helping small businesses stabilize cash flow, become more profitable, and pay less taxes. She's also the host of the Anything Would Work podcast and Talk to Tiana. She is super excited about her new book Dream Bold, Start Smart: Be Your Own Boss and Make Money Doing What You Love.  In this episode, she shares her extensive knowledge on setting up your business right, when you should have an LLC, and when you should have an S corp. We talk about some of the pitfalls that happen if you don't take the time to set things up right. We also talk about the emotional aspects of business, finances, and numbers that relate to money. She has high hopes that it will help change the world. Her tax business is also booming.  [03:36] The emotional connection between dreaming boldly and understanding financial fundamentals. Many entrepreneurs have bold dreams but have neglected to address the financial side. [04:24] Dream bold is the vision and spark that business owners have. Tatiana wants to help them start smart.  [06:19] The back office of the business. It's where the work behind the scene happens. You have to take care of the back office which includes things like pricing and accounting. [08:42] Gross income is the top line or what you get for your product or service. It doesn't include the expenses that allowed you to get there. Not looking at the bottom line is an approach to failure. [09:43] Gross profit is your sales minus direct cost. What's your cost of sales, equipment, and labor?  If you're not selling any product, you shouldn't be incurring any cost.  [10:47] Income minus expenses is net taxable income. The amount of some deductions will vary. [13:45] Making your first million is really just a number. How much of that did you keep? Profit is separate from your salary. This is your reward.  [17:51] The separation between business and personal and using a legal entity for your business. It's critical to separate the two. It's easier for accounting and audit proofing. Commingling funds can make expenses seem personal. Open a second bank account.  [23:30] An LLC can provide legal liability protection. Without an entity if you get sued, they can go after your personal assets. With an LLC, they can only go after your business assets. [25:03] You will see the most tax with an LLC, but you can easily convert that into more tax-friendly things.  [26:53]  An S corp is a corporation. There is entity tax and the tax on the money you take out of the business. There is a way to create a pass-through entity. Doing this will allow you to pay less taxes. New York City doesn't recognize S corps. You need to beware of local regulations. [30:35] Start with an LLC and see how things go. Once you hit $50,000 of net profit, become an S corp. [34:46] Financial stability helps you wake up with confidence. There's a direct connection between being confident in your numbers in the future of your business. This will help you be emotionally calm and live the life that you want. [39:57] Tatiana looks at her numbers daily. Some people look at affiliate marketing as some scammer trying to push any old product in order to get a commission. If you're not an affiliate marketer, you may have preconceived notions that affiliate marketing is in some way less than legitimate. Today, we are going to set the record straight. The Affiliate Guy, Matt McWilliams is here to talk about his affiliate marketing journey and how affiliate marketing can have a positive impact on the world.  We are specifically going to talk about partnering with other online entrepreneurs to reach a broader audience and get your product in front of those who actually need it. Matt breaks down how anyone can start an affiliate program for their product for free. We talk about some of the tools needed and how to remain ethical while actually doing good. According to Matt, the best partners are ones that help you create value, provide quality, and have a relevant audience. He's not willing to promote a product that he wouldn't be willing to sell to one of his closest friends. Matt has been doing affiliate marketing for over 16 years. In fact, it's how he saved one of his businesses. He has trained more than 300,000 affiliates. He has worked with Shutterfly and Adidas. He's also worked with entrepreneurs like Michael Hyatt, Stu McLaren, Lewis Howes, Brian Tracy, Ray Edwards, Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Shark Tank's Kevin Harrington, and Zig Ziglar. He's the host of The Affiliate Guy Podcast, and he's passionate about creating positive impact by helping great businesses thrive and build an audience.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. Now that he's acknowledged that, it's made a huge difference in his leadership ability.  [04:43] He also lost 88 pounds and improved his health.  [07:35] Matt has been involved with affiliate marketing for the last 16 years. Affiliate marketing saved his business. [10:33] Matt shares how he realized the actual importance of his job helping businesses by teaching affiliate marketing. He realized he is making a difference.  [15:13] Matt lost 88 pounds with the help of his coach. He felt his weight was holding him back in his business. [19:46] Values, quality, relevance and being able to offer the product to a friend can help you decide if your values are in line with the affiliate program you're looking at. [22:55] When looking at potential affiliate programs always ask what is the best way to serve your audience. It's good to go through it or have someone on your team do so. [26:29] When you promote a program, don't send it to everyone on your list or your new subscribers.  [30:10] If you promote something, always give value. Share how it impacted you and why that is so valuable. Give your subscribers an option to opt out of your further affiliate marketing emails on this one program that you are promoting. [32:02] The best place to start finding affiliates is with your friends and people who have promoted similar products.  [34:35] The four sentence rule. Don't overwhelm your list. You can start an affiliate program for free. [36:02] You can use a tool like ConvertKit to set up a landing page URL that will tag affiliates that send traffic to that URL.  [38:39] Follow best practices, and then test everything else. A/B split testing will help you improve your conversions. [45:26] Matt has a new book called The Passion to Profit Path.  [46:02] The three types of entrepreneurs include the profitable who hate their work, the ones who love what they don't but don't make any money, and the ones who love what they do and make great money.  [48:39] The goal of Matt's business and book is to help entrepreneurs make money and love what they do.  [52:34] Affiliate marketing bridges the gap between having nothing to sell and being able to sell something. It also helps you learn about your audience. Business is business. Many of the same principles of marketing apply to brick and mortar and digital marketplaces. If you want people to buy from you, they need to know you're out there. They also need to understand what you are offering and how you can solve their problems. Then, of course, they need to know, like and trust you. Today, we are talking about how to use cutting edge digital tools to get more eyes on your business and how to nurture those eyes into eventual conversions.  Ryan O'Connor is the founder of Worth eCommerce a portland based email marketing agency. Where Ryan and his partner Dean Dutro help businesses create a bullet proof email strategy to get the attention of their potential customers. They partner with you to create steady growth and track your ROI every step of the way. Ryan has done research at NASA while getting his master's in psychology and has also founded a multi-million dollar phone accessory store.  We kick off the show with methods for capturing attention and eventually getting those prospects to buy. We talk about the importance of first impressions, understanding your audience, and the importance of overcoming objections. We move on to current trends in digital marketing. We talk about how email marketing isn't going away, and we discuss new and fresh ways to use SMS to nurture an audience and build a community.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. [04:01] How do you capture someone's attention with so many competing offers? How do you get them to buy? The same methods used by a store can be used in the digital world. [05:37] Once you've provided value then you can begin to sell or go for the ask. It's up to you to talk about your products and offerings during the right time of your customers Journey. [07:10] Price and psychology of offering a product or service can be different, but it's a similar journey. [09:58] First impressions and the homepage are very important for that first conversion. [13:40] The journey from stranger to customer. Education and trust are important. Once the customer knows it's a perfect fit, they will buy. [16:18] Sales comes down to psychology and understanding your audience. Overcome objections and show the positive things about your offer. [20:01] Current trends in conversions include keeping communication and trust with people who aren't ready to buy yet. The best way to do this is through email marketing and SMS marketing. [21:19] Once you have an email address or phone number, you'll always be able to communicate with your potential customers. [27:23] Sales happen when you talk to people about solving their problems, building trust, and not asking for the direct sale.  [28:54] Ask for an email and then make people who give you their phone number VIP customers. [30:18] Focus on email marketing and building trust and then offer something more to get people to sign up for SMS. Provide value and help people with their lives. [35:53] You can provide exclusive things with extra benefits for those people who really love you and your products through SMS. [40:06] Popular SMS platforms include Postscript, Attentive, and Community. [40:56] With your own text platform, no third-party will own your community. [45:36] Email and SMS is a channel that's not going away in the near future. There was a time when businesses thought they needed to stay completely neutral and not ever take a side or have any opinion at all. Times have changed, and consumers now like and trust businesses that they can relate to and have opinions they support. It's really about looking for ways to build trust with potential customers and consumers by building them up and giving them information that is empowering.    Margot Bloomstein is a content strategist, author, and keynote speaker. She's been a content strategist for more than 20 years, and she's consulted with clients from a wide range of industries and backgrounds. Margot is the author of Trustworthy: How the Smartest Brands Beat Cynicism and Bridge the Trust Gap and Content Strategy at Work: Real-World Stories to Strengthen Every Interactive Project. She's also the principal of Appropriate, Inc., a brand and content strategy consultancy based in Boston.    We tackle some of the concepts in her new book and look at unique ways that brands can build trust that just may not fit traditional methods. We also talk when there is a place for novelty and a place for comfort. Margot explains how voice, volume and vulnerability play significant roles in the trust equation. She's really excited about the friends and mentors that have been helping to guide the process. [04:58] Sales can fall flat when audiences don't trust their own knowledge. People need courage in their own convictions to do the research and make the correct decisions. [06:21] We need to rebuild our customers' confidence before building their confidence in us. [09:55] Socially responsible businesses do well.  [14:22] The people we want closest to us are the ones that build us up and make us feel smarter in the world, not those who tear us down. The same goes for businesses. [18:31] Tapping into our customers aspirations. People purchase things from a point of optimism. [21:44] Creating trust through voice, volume, and vulnerability. [22:33] You empower the consumer by making your brand distinct. They understand who you are and how you are by your voice. [23:09] Voice is the consistent and familiar way that you engage in with your audience. [23:54] Understand your goal and then you can make choices around the words you choose and your color scheme. [26:42] Having balance between consistency and novelty. This may not be the time for brands to reintroduce themselves or launch a new logo. People may be surrounded with enough novelty currently.  [29:05] How trust and comfort play nice together. [31:37] Precision in language is not as important as being approachable and familiar. Familiar can be more valuable and useful than precise. [34:12] Use language to meet people where they are, but also introduce other terminology and perspectives to bring them where they need to go. [36:44] Volume. There are different levels of detail visually and verbally and it all goes back to whether you are putting a burden on your audience or helping them. [39:59] You know you've said enough when your customers feel good about the information they have and can make decisions based on that. [41:43] Vulnerability. Different points of view can lose or gain more customers. Sales can go up when you speak up. [45:56] The risk of making your values visible helps your audience find you. Sometimes people assume their leaders have all the answers, at least, until they become the leader. Then they realize that there is a lot of fear, uncertainty, and doubt that can go along with being the person in charge. Marc Pitman puts a unique twist on that doubt that can often plague leaders, business people, and entrepreneurs. He actually believes that we can use the gift of doubt and uncertainty to step into the role of the leader that we are meant to be.    Marc is the author of Ask Without Fear and The Surprising Gift of Doubt. In this conversation, we explore some of the concepts that support Marc's insights behind the gift of doubt. We explore how doubt can be a catalyst that forces us to find and create our own answers. We explore the four quadrants that take us through this process. We also talk about the significance of personality assessments, stories and sources of motivation.   He is an executive coach and speaker, and the founder of The Concord Leadership Group where he has been leading organizations and teams for decades. He's been studying leadership for over 30 years. Marc has a Masters in Organizational Leadership and is certified as a Franklin Covey coach. [03:04] Doubt can invite you to create your own answers.  [07:31] Doubt means that we're on the edge of greatness. When we start out with the leader's journey, we may fail trying to copy others and eventually discover our own answers.  [10:30] In Marc's book, The Gift of Doubt, he talks about the four quadrants.  [11:47] Quadrant one is the confident external quadrant. This is where you model people who you've seen do what you are trying to do. [12:56] Quadrant two is where you start to experiment. A lot of people get stuck in this quadrant, because they don't want to look for internal answers. [15:25] Many people have the answers they need, they just discredit themselves too easily. [17:42] Quadrant three includes some level of vulnerability when realizing where you must go. This is when you step beyond your doubt. Anchoring in. [23:39] Doubt is more self-referential where uncertainty can be externally focused. Leaders know the non-negotiables. [26:39] Quadrant four is where you take internal and external cues and learn to guide people. You have a view of the whole map, and you're able to navigate to where you want to go. [31:38] The influence of personality assessments depends on where you are in your journey.  [34:38] Know the strengths of your motivation.  [36:41] The stories that you tell yourself and the stories that you feel attracted to can be another angle of motivation for you. Money is such a huge factor in most of our lives. Some of us have a lot and some not as much, but it's really how we think about that money that affects our abundance. In other words, there is a lot of emotion tied to money and how we think about it. That's why today, I have financial expert Bob Wheeler on the show to talk about the emotions behind our finances.    Bob is an accountant and has been on a crusade for personal growth. He noticed that people's attitudes and their emotions around money had a huge effect on their finances. It's now his passion to help others gain insights into how their emotions can trigger financial decisions. Bob is the author of The Money Nerve: Navigating The Emotions Of Money. He is the host of the Money You Should Ask podcast and has a new online course called The Emotions of Money.    He also loves satire, stand-up comedy, and mountain climbing. He noticed that many of his clients wouldn't take the practical sound advice he had been giving them. He realized that we need to get a handle on the emotional component of money. [07:34] It's never too late to look back at the things we learned when we were young. What did our parents, church, or culture tell us about money? What different choices can we make moving forward? [10:49] If you're not aware the system is against you, you might think it's you. Subtle things can make us feel not worthy. [13:49] The first thing Bob asks his clients is if they're willing to be uncomfortable and do the work. [16:11] Understand intentional spending and what the spending in your business is actually accomplishing. [18:18] It's more about life work integration as opposed to balance. Are your decisions in alignment with what you want to happen? [20:25] Start enjoying your life and be excited about what you do now. It's also good to learn delayed gratification and save some of your money. [24:54] Pay attention to the things you say. Write down three things you've recently said about money. Little adjustments can help us see that we're not victims. [28:05] Look at what you have instead of what you don't have. There is a correlation between not enough time or not enough money and thinking in those terms. [29:33] Get clear about what you want and then start breaking it down into baby steps. Come up with blueprints for each of your goals and then continue to evaluate if you still want those goals. [31:17] Finding intrinsic motivation is about mindset. If you want to save, open a savings account and start with $5. This can help with motivation, because it gets exciting as the account grows. [35:31] Balancing that scarcity mindset. Be aware and stop and get grounded. Look at what you do have and what you can be grateful for. Focus on your abundance and what you're happy with to see all of the abundance. [41:10] You have to ask for it. If we don't invite in and welcome what we want and ask for it, we may not get it.  [44:09] Learn what Bob does every morning and more in this Rapid Round!    Guest Contact –   The Money Nerve Bob Wheeler LinkedIn The Money Nerve Facebook Bob Wheeler Twitter   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! My guest today is here to talk about why we need to prioritize self-care to do our best work, and she shares a step-by-step approach on how to do so in order to live our best life and do our best work.    Naz Beheshti is the author of Pause. Breathe. Choose.: Become the CEO of Your Well-Being. She is super excited about the release of her new book. In it, she presents a framework to fulfill our highest potential in all aspects of our lives. She learned many of the lessons in the book from her first boss right after college. [03:37] She gets to share her effective method on how to live your best life on a larger scale. [04:38] Naz worked with Steve Jobs right out of college as his executive assistant. He embodied well-being and running a successful company. She had to work hard to provide the excellence that he demanded. [07:13] The inner work that we need to do is a better mindset. It all starts within. We need intrinsic motivation before we change our behavior.  [10:46] Daily consistency is important. Ten minutes is better than zero minutes.  [13:01] Advice for leaders includes shifting from a should mindset to a must mindset and prioritizing. Make time and block it off in your calendar. You are just as important as anything else on your calendar. [16:12] Naz's book includes the seven A's. Adopt is for adopting a healthy lifestyle and achieving your highest potential. Allocate, play and recovery time is all about rebooting your mind, body and creativity. [19:41] Avoid is about avoiding unnecessary stress. It's about taking preventive measures to avoid chronic stress. [19:58] Alter the situation is about making a change to attain a better outcome. Adapt to the stressor is understanding the bigger picture to gain perspective. Accepting what you cannot change helps you have greater peace of mind. [20:22] Attend to connection is about cultivating meaningful relationships and limitless possibilities. [21:17] The three types of stress include acute, chronic stress, and which is the productive and positive stress. [24:25] A sign of chronic stress is lasting for more than six months and having a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness. It feels like an unresolved stress. [25:26] The three p's include pain which we all experienced differently. Prana stands for vital life energy. It's the vehicle that gets us from pain to purpose. We are energized when prana is flowing freely. Purpose can be seen as our daily intentions and our life's mission. [27:27] Pranayama is a very effective way to align your chakras and release negativity and toxins. Getting more oxygen to your brain really helps energize you. [32:04] The MAP Method is a holistic framework to navigate your mindful journey. The MAP is an acronym for master mindfulness, apply better choices to manage stress and create resilience, and the P stands for promote yourself to CEO of your well-being. Have you ever attempted a joke online and it not only fell flat, but it also offended the person on the other end? Communication in a virtual world is tricky and can be filled with landmines of miscommunication. Dr. Nick Morgan is one of the most respected coaches for speakers. He is an expert communicator and is here to explain the five basic problems of virtual communication and how to overcome them.  Dr. Nick Morgan is a passionate speaker, theorist, and coach. He founded the Public Words consulting firm which helps people convey their ideas with passion and the use of storytelling. He's coached people to give Congressional testimony, to appear in the media, and to deliver unforgettable TED talks. He's written for Fortune 50 CEOs and presidents and has spoken and moderated venues around the world.  His book Can You Hear Me?: How to Connect with People in a Virtual World was published in 2018, and it's more relevant now than ever. It's really a communication manual for remote and virtual work. We talk about problems like lack of empathy, lack of feedback, lack of control, lack of emotion, and lack of connection and commitment. Nick also shares how to solve these issues and convey emotion virtually.   And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. People are hardwired to get cues about a person's intent from their senses. [08:23] We've been in a virtual world since the beginning of email and texting. It starts with written virtual communication and then moves on to audio and video.  [10:45] Can virtual communication be more personal?  [13:34] When people really take the time to express what they want to say in written media, it can be more intimate. [16:14] Being a live speaking coach has magnified the aspects of virtual communication for Nick.  [18:17] The five basic problems of virtual communication. Number one is the lack of feedback.  [18:45] In face to face interaction we get instant feedback from the five senses. Our minds assume the worst without feedback.  [22:30] Number two is the lack of empathy. We lose empathy because of the negative assumption. There is a lack of clarity of intent in virtual communication. [25:24] We may need to reflect and actually ask the person how what we said made them feel. This will often clear up a misunderstanding. [26:57] Lack of control. Things are remembered forever in the online world. [30:14] Lack of emotion. The audio of our voice is compressed online. Emotions are carried in the overtones, not the basic pitch.  [35:00] Get clear about your intent. Use emojis to put body language back in. Ramp up the emotion and energy in audio. Use your hands during video.  [39:55] Lack of connection and commitment. If the online world isn't working, we move on. In person, we take stock of the human being.  [44:42] Proprioception awareness of space of the body. This is thrown off online. This is why Zoom calls can be stressful.  [49:55] Nick shares his communication skills in the Rapid Round.     Guest Contact –   Public Words Can You Hear Me?: How to Connect with People in a Virtual World Nick Morgan LinkedIn Nick Morgan Twitter Public Words Facebook   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Creating connection has always been important, but in today's world with virtual communication it's especially relevant. Do you ever take the time to think about the impact of your words? Is making every conversation count a priority for you? I have a guest today that is an expert communicator who values the importance of creating intentional connections through meaningful conversation.    Riaz Meghji is the author of Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection that Build Extraordinary Relationships. He is an accomplished broadcaster with 17 years of television hosting experience. His on-camera experience taught him the power of candid conversation and how to put it into practice. He has hosted for MTV Canada, CTV News, TEDxVancouver, and more. He's also a human connection keynote speaker.   In today's conversation, we get to learn what Riaz is excited about now. He also shares his five proven methods for making people feel famous or heard and valued. He values the opportunity to explore and learn something new when having conversations with others. We talk about how to make someone feel appreciated and the importance of building trust.   Riaz shares the importance of documenting conversations and how that information can be a valuable tool to further the relationship when building intentional connections. This entire conversation is a valuable reminder on how to treat people and make them feel special and the rewards that are received by both parties in the conversation.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Riaz Meghji thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He's going to focus on intentional connection as opposed to being on autopilot while going about his daily life.  [04:58] We talk about taking the opportunity to explore and discover something new through conversation and intentional connections.  [05:31] Riaz wants to understand the impact he has and be open to learn from others. He was fortunate enough to do this in broadcasting for 17 years. Now he's lucky enough to spread his ideas by writing about them.  [06:38] Most of us are now learning how to create a profound connection while looking into a web camera.  [07:00] Skills that have served Riaz include knowing to forget about himself. Turn the camera off and look into the lens like you are speaking to one person. He asks how he can cultivate a service mentality.  [09:28] Speak in singular in a virtual world or on stage.  [11:19] There's an opportunity to create a deeper connection in a virtual space, because every audience member has a front row seat to what you are saying. [12:26] Engage with people right out of the gate with a question.  [14:57] People want candid moments through the camera.  [17:32] Always make people feel famous. Riaz has interviewed thousands of guests over the years. Everyone wants a champion in their corner. People want to feel recognized, appreciated, and valued. [18:14] Making someone feel appreciated comes down to the power of praise. Make it specific.  [20:32] Riaz has five tips to make people feel famous. The first one is to document their details. People give you clues as to who they are. Documenting and remembering something important about a person creates respect and trust.  [25:01] Take notes and write down three things about the person that you can reference later. [27:11] Tip number two is remember their name. Riaz shares a story about the importance of remembering people's names. A tip is to focus, comment, and employ. Use their name three times in the first conversation. [31:20] Give them access. People love the behind the scenes things the best. Use social media and pull back the curtain.  [37:34] Show unsolicited appreciation. Surprise someone with appreciation when it's not expected.  [39:48] Shift your brain with the three words I get to. Start your day with three things that you are grateful for. Operate from a place of gratitude not obligation. [44:03] We have the power to teach, inspire, or destroy a person. It's a choice what we do.
