US and the World Planters are rolling across the Great North American corn belt. It is that time of year when the rubber meets the road with regard to all the plans put in place over the last few months. As of May, the 10th 57% of corn was planted in the US and 49% of intended soybean acreage was in the ground. So we’re off to a very good start. However, as every farmer knows there’s lots of risks planting those fields and there’s lots of risk ahead. Markets have been volatile. On Tuesday May the 12th the USDA released their latest WASDE report. The May report is USDA’s first detailed look into crop production for the 2026/2027 crop year. USDA is predicting new crop corn to be 15.995 billion bushels based on the yield guess of 183 bushels per acre. This was within pre report estimates and if it comes to fruition, it will be the second largest corn crop on record trailing only last year's 17.02-billion-bushel blockbuster. The planted acreage is set to come in at 95.3 million acres with harvested acreage projected at 87.4 million acres. It really wasn’t a big surprise with regard to these fundamental numbers. The corn ending stocks for 2026/27 are projected to be 1.957 billion bushels. Total corn usage is estimated to be 16.205 billion bushels. On the soybean side of the equation, USDA estimated numbers of 4.435 billion bushels of soybeans with a trendline yield of 53 bushels per acre and 84.7 million acres. If it comes to fruition, this will be the second largest soybean crop in U.S. history. US domestic soybean stocks are set to come in at 310 million bushels which was on the bottom end of the pre report estimates. The Brazilians are set to produce another 186 MMT crop of soybeans and the Argentinians are set to come in at 48 MMTs. USDA estimated 2026/2027 US wheat production to be 1.561 billion bushels which is a decrease from the 1.921 billion bushels last May. If this production comes to fruition, it will be the lowest wheat production since 1972. On May 15th corn and soybeans were about the same and wheat futures were higher than the last Market Trends report. July 2026 corn futures was at $4.55 a bushel. Dec 2026 corn was at $4.81 bu. The July 2026 soybean futures was at $11.77 bu. The November 2026 soybean futures were at $11.70. The July 2026 wheat futures closed at $6.35 a bushel. The Minneapolis July 2026 wheat futures closed at $6.85 a bushel with the September 2026 contract closing at $7.05 a bushel. The nearby oil futures as of May 15th, 2026, closed at $105.42/barrel much higher vs the nearby futures recorded in the last Market Trends report of $94.40/barrel. The average price for US ethanol in the US was $2.22/gallon, higher vs the $2.21/gallon recorded in the last Market Trends Report. The Canadian dollar noon rate on April 24th, 2026, was .7272 US, down vs the .7311 US reported here in the last Market Trends report. The Bank of Canada’s lending rate remained at 2.25%. Ontario The Grain Farmers of Ontario's estimation of planting put corn planting at 52% complete, soybeans are at 16 per cent complete, and spring cereals planting is 62 per cent complete across the province as of Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Weather has been uneven early in the season and especially cold going into mid-May. Producers will be hoping for hot weather for good crop emergence and adequate rainfall to get the crop off to a good start. Rainfall has been a bit on the light side in some areas of the province as of mid-May. In fact, although some wheat fields look very good some of the wheat fields that got side dressed late because of tough ground conditions are in need of a good rain. So far at least in the deep southwest of Ontario that has not happened. Weather is always a dominant factor with regard to crop progress. So far it is led to slow development, but of course we’re hoping for a quick turnaround. Ontario corn basis levels have hardly changed from the last Market Trends report. In fact if anything they are a bit lower. Soybeans on the other hand have much higher basis levels which are reflection of the lower Canadian dollar, higher futures prices and the lower soybean supplies in eastern Canada. The Canadian dollar currently at .7272 US continues to add stimulus to Ontario grain prices. Old crop corn basis levels are $1.40 to $2.05 over the July 2026 corn futures on May 15th across the province. New crop corn basis levels were $1.20 to $1.63 over Dec 2026 futures. The old crop basis levels for soybeans range from $3.45 to $4.20 over the July 2026 futures. New crop soybeans range from $3.16 to $3.45 over the November 2026 futures. Ontario SRW wheat prices are approximately $7.72. For July 2026 new crop the bid is in the $7.66/bu range. On May 15th the US replacement price for corn was $6.74/bushel. You can access all these Ontario grain prices in the marketing section at https://gfo.ca/marketing/daily-commodity-report/ The Bottom Line Our grain marketing reality is growing a little bit more mixed. A month ago, one of the main topics of discussion was the Iran war and how that had affected both fertilizer and fuel prices. By extension the grain markets rallied. However, that war has now become more dialed into the trading algorithms and a month-long ceasefire has mitigated some of the effect. Needless to say, oil prices are still elevated and the war could continue to flare up anytime. It is truly a wild card for grain producers this year across the North American corn belt. That might be the wild card but of course there is always the weather which has a big effect on what’s happening ahead. For instance, by the weekend of May 16th about 70% of the US corn crop could be planted as well as 2/3 of the soybean crop. Things have turned bearish and that’s partly because of the disappointment in Beijing and partly because of the great crop planting progress and the benign weather. It is leaning into a bearish market environment. If the weather decides to play nice, we know the rest of the story. We will have big crops and probably rising ending stocks. However, on the other hand if there is a hiccup involved with regard to crop weather in supply, we will likely see a mitigating effect on the price dropping. It is shaping up to be a super El Nino year. Looking back at the past super El Nino years, 2015, 1997 and 2023, all had record corn yields. Wheat is at an interesting point. The Chicago wheat contract which is especially relative to producers in Ontario has been dragged up by the HRW wheat price rally. This is happened because of the dry weather in the US southern plains. It is key because the United States will be at a low ebb for HRW for another year. This should support to some extent the Chicago wheat market. As always, with wheat grown everywhere, cheaper foreign wheat always has the potential to show up in US ports. Commodity Specific Comments Corn The US old crop corn ending stocks sitting at 2.1 billion bushels is putting a drag on the corn price. However, it is much higher than it was a year ago and has constantly threatened to go through $5 US. However, it has not done that and backed off currently at $4.81 a bushel. New crop ending stocks at 1.96 billion bushels are telling us there’s not a lot of concern. Old crop prices reflect this. We’ll have to see what the weather does this summer. The December contract breaking through $5 is a tough ask. Seasonality is always part of that and traditionally that has been mid-June for the highest new crop prices. However, over the past five years the seasonality seems to have changed because the best new crop prices being in the first part of May. That possibly might have happened this year. Weather risk and renewed war risk will likely be two factors to break that $5 barrier. The July 2026 corn contract is currently priced at 7.25 cents lower than the September 2026 contract a bearish indication of old crop corn demand. Seasonally, we know that corn prices tend to peak in early June and bottom out in early October. The July 2026 corn futures contract is at the 16th percentile of the past five-year price distribution range. Soybeans Soybeans have been on call with regard to any news coming out of China. At this point there hasn’t been specific numbers mentioned with regard to any type of renewed Chinese demand coming out of the presidential meeting in Beijing. Positive news out of that meeting might have taken the nearby month into the $12.00 futures territory. As it is now, there is really no shortage of soybeans in the United States or in the world at any level. Soybean prices fell after the summit with funds taking profits from the lack of news. However, there still could be increased Chinese buying but it might be more likely that it comes later in the season, when soybeans could be cheaper. Cheap always is the great elixir for Chinese soybean buying. The July 2026 soybean contract is currently priced .25 cents above the August contract considered bullish for old crop soybean demand. Seasonally, soybean prices tend to peak in early July and bottom out in early October. The July 2026 soybean contract is currently at the 28th percentile of the past five-year price distribution range. Wheat Wheat went up the limit in one trading session of the week ending May 16th. In the May USDA report all wheat production was down to 1.561 billion bushels, and this was 170 million bushels below trade estimates. The HRW wheat was estimated at 515 million bushels which is nearly 290 million bushels below last year. So, for whatever reason, we went up the limit but keep in mind most US wheat is still priced out of global markets. At the moment it’s a US phenomenon seeing this wheat price higher, at a certain point it will likely disappear. Needless to say, it does represent opportunity to price wheat. The Ontario wheat crop could sure use a rain in some areas, but generally looks good. Quality issues can always be a problem when it comes to wheat but drier than normal usually works well. Prices are also a dollar plus higher this year compared to what was received last harvest season in 2025. The Canadian dollar certainly helps with that. Producers will be hoping as the weather grows warmer wheat finds its sweet spot to bring in bumper yields. The Bottom Line (cont.) The Canadian dollar continues to flutter around the 72 cent level US. Over the last several weeks it is gyrated between 73 cents and 71 cents US bouncing in an inverse fashion to where the US dollar goes. At a certain point there is going to be a breakout to the upside and when it does it will be a problem for Ontario cash grain prices. As it is, stronger USD economic data and trade uncertainty with Canada hasn’t been good for the loonie. $0.80 US still seems like a long way off, thankfully for Ontario grain prices. The geopolitical situation continues to be a bit of a hot mess, but a hot mess that the grain trading algorithms have readily devoured. Whether it is Russia and Ukraine or Iran and the United States or Israel and Lebanon grain algorithms have adjusted. However, oil prices are still elevated which help grain prices generally. In the bearish fundamental environment for grain, which we are in now these geopolitical concerns can add a lot of spark to the market at unusual times. Keep in mind that we are in a time frame of grain seasonality we’re often times you can capture new crop marketing opportunities. It is also true that you can sell grain throughout the year successfully especially if you have market orders set. Capturing those market opportunities can be elusive especially in markets like these affected by geopolitical events beyond the grain fundamentals. Despite that, we move on. Here in Ontario, we have the challenge once again this spring of getting the crop in the ground. That can always certainly be a challenge, but it’s also challenged to market our crops in a profitable manner and capture those marketing opportunities when they come along. Grain continues to move out into the export market to compete with cheaper options. At the same time there are value added opportunities here at home built up by our industry overtime. Daily market intelligence remains key. Risk management never grows old. There will be many marketing opportunities ahead. The move sent soybeans up 14 cents to near $11.97/bu and corn up roughly 6 cents to near $5.05/bu, with wheat also advancing on expected Plains rainfall.US winter wheat conditions remain historically poor—the top 5 HRW states (KS, OK, TX, CO, NE) are rated just 14% good-excellent with 52% poor-to-very-poor. Nationally, 37% of the crop is rated poor-to-very-poor, well above the 5-year average of 27%. Corn planting reached 38% complete, ahead of the 34% average, while soybean planting hit 33%, well above the 23% average. On the export front, corn inspections came in strong at 80 million bushels — up 22% week-over-week and 25% vs. last year. Soybean and wheat shipments came in near the low end of expectations. China accounted for roughly 45% of weekly inspections. The US is urging China to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Treasury Secretary Bessent noted China buys ~90% of Iran's energy exports. Trump and Xi are expected to meet May 14th. Meanwhile, China ordered its companies to disregard US sanctions on private refiners tied to Iranian oil purchases.Tyson Foods posted $260M in net income last quarter, up sharply from $7M a year ago, despite a $240M loss in its beef segment driven by tight cattle supplies. Chicken profit hit $505M. Ag Secretary Rollins flagged the administration's ongoing investigation into the big four meatpackers.

Chicago May26 wheat settled near $6.22, KC May26 near $6.67, with both HRW and HRS posting fresh highs. Corn and beans also closed higher, with Dec26 corn hitting fresh 1-month highs overnight. The Iran war is triggering a major fertilizer crisis—over half of the Middle East's urea production has been disrupted, with roughly 30% of global urea trade affected by the Strait of Hormuz closure. Farmers worldwide may be forced to cut application rates, threatening yields and global food security. The Trump administration is expected to unveil a fertilizer investment plan this week, targeting both short-term price relief and long-term domestic production reshoring, while the USDA and DOJ investigate potential price gouging.US corn export inspections came in at 65 million bushels for the week ending April 23 — solid but down slightly week-over-week. Soybean shipments were up 37% vs. last year, with China taking ~39% of inspections. Wheat shipments came in near the top of expectations at 13 million bushels.

Crude finally gave a little back, but diesel didn't, wheat got drunk again, and the cattle market still refuses to blink. In today's Friggin' Farm & Ranch Report, we walk through day two after the Hormuz shock: WTI backing off into the low 90s, diesel still north of $5.60, wheat ripping 8% in a day, and live cattle camped out in record country. We hit the board first -- April and June live, heavy feeder trade with the CME index closing the gap, hogs stuck in the mud, corn and beans acting tired, and HRW wheat riding a rented war-and-drought rally. Then it's the sale barn pulse: Atkinson Livestock, OKC West, Clovis, Torrington, Billings, and Utah all putting real-money tags on calves, replacer females, and bulls in a 75-year-low cow herd. On the horse side, the A Man About A Horse cull index ticks higher for the first time in a long while, broke ranch geldings hold, registered ranch-broke horses trend up, and projects get cheaper -- same message as the cattle ring: finished product gets the check, "someday" gets punished. We close with crude, diesel, the E15 waiver, fertilizer carrying the Hormuz premium, and a war reel from the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea and Black Sea. Then On This Day takes us back to Black Sunday 1935 and The Grapes of Wrath in 1939. It's not a get-rich market. It's a don't-screw-it-up market. Learn more about your ad choices. Ralph welcomes international security expert Paul Rogers to discuss the US-Israeli war on Iran. Then, Ralph speaks to constitutional law experts Bruce Fein and John Bonifaz about their upcoming impeachment symposium.Paul Rogers is Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies in the Department of Peace Studies and International Relations at Bradford University, and an Honorary Fellow at the Joint Service Command and Staff College. He is open Democracy's international security correspondent.I think if you look at the war overall, then essentially of the three (I use the term as a crude term) participants, the one that is basically doing most badly is the United States, followed by Israel, followed least by Iran. Relatively speaking, the Iranians (particularly the Revolutionary Guard Corps) are closer to where they wanted to be, which is not true of the United States and certainly isn't true to a very large extent of the Israelis as well. In other words, the war is going badly. for the people who are determined to try and defeat Iran.Paul RogersPeople tend to think Iran is on its own against these huge odds. Well, it isn't. In many ways, certainly Russia and certainly China have a real interest in what is happening. But as far as China is concerned, they will not help directly. They will not, in other words, as far as we know, arm Iran without payment. They will see them as a reasonable customer. I think (more widely than we realize) as far as you get away from D.C., then I think you see the world in a rather different way, particularly across the global south it is certainly seen in a different way…And I would come back to a point which I think is a fair point made earlier—essentially, the Iranian Republican Revolutionary Guard Corps has been working towards this time for decades. And they will not be easily dislodged. It could happen eventually, but I think it's highly unlikely.Paul RogersJohn Bonifaz is a constitutional attorney and the co-founder and president of Free Speech For People. Mr. Bonifaz previously served as the executive director and general counsel of the National Voting Rights Institute, and as the legal director of Voter Action. He is the author of Warrior-King: The Case For Impeaching George W. Bush and the co-author (with Ron Fein and Ben Clements) of The Constitution Demands It: The Case For The Impeachment of Donald Trump.Threatening to execute members of Congress is unique to Trump. Kidnapping people off the streets and sending them to foreign torture prisons is unique to Trump. Freezing public funds that have been duly appropriated by the United States Congress and not distributing those funds is unique to Trump. Attacking the United States judiciary, refusing to comply with multiple court orders issued by federal courts across the country is unique to Trump. Engaging in these murders on the high seas…these paramilitary attacks on people in the Pacific and in the Caribbean is unique to Trump. Now, it's true that there have been other violations of the War Powers Clause…But the scale of the War Powers violations today is unique to Trump. And this current new, illegal, and unconstitutional war against Iran is threatening the entire world. And so I think that whether they be Democrats or Republicans or Independents, they have to wake up and recognize they have a duty here.John BonifazBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law. Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.Ralph, me and John have been trying to impeach Presidents—Democrat, Republican—for decades for these illegalities. The idea that we picked out Trump is absurd. Look at my history. Half of my life has been devoted to getting Presidents impeached and removed from office…So the idea that this is partisan, at least among us, is factually absurd.Bruce FeinI think we need to be even more candid about the nature of the crimes. This is not just illegal wars under the Constitution. He is committing the crime of aggression, the same crime that we sentence Nazis to death at Nuremberg for committing aggression against Poland, against Denmark, against Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, etc.Bruce FeinThis is what is defined as a dictator by any ordinary use of the English language. We need to get away from “authoritarian,” “Oh, he's pushing the envelope.” This is what dictators do. He stated, “I can do anything I want.” And he does it. He kills people. He deports them without due process. He spies on them. He suppresses free speech by using the government to penalize anyone who says anything that's critical, detracts from Mr. Trump. I mean, it is impossible to conceive of the framers thinking anyone like Donald Trump, given his words and his actions, would remain in office more than a fortnight if Congress was doing its duty.Bruce FeinNews 4/3/26* This week, the Trump administration backed down and allowed the Russian oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin to pass through the American blockade and deliver a shipment of 730,000 barrels of oil to Cuba. The AP writes, the shipment could produce about 180,000 barrels of diesel, enough to feed Cuba's daily energy demand for nine or 10 days. Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío commented on the situation, “The arrival of an oil tanker to a country has likely never generated so much news as the Russian one to Cuba…It's a sign of the brutal siege Cubans endure with heroism and stoicism. It's a demonstration of the criminal cruelty of imperialism against a nation that refuses to be dominated.” Trump's public statements on the matter however loom ominously over the island nation. On Sunday night, Trump told reporters “Cuba's finished…whether or not they get a boat of oil, it's not going to matter.”* In more news of Trump backing down, or “chickening out” as the saying goes, the Wall Street Journal reports that Trump is telling his inner circle that he is willing to end the military operation in Iran without reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, he wants the U.S. to stick to its original 4-6 week timeline and focus on “hobbling Iran's navy and its missile stocks…while pressuring Tehran diplomatically.” This report adds that if this fails, Trump plans to “press allies in Europe and the Gulf to take the lead on reopening the strait.” This aligns with Trump's recent statements on Truth Social, telling allies like the UK to “Go get your own oil!” With all of this said, Trump has sent the USS Tripoli and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to the region, is weighing the deployment of another 10,000 ground troops, and is considering a “complex and risky mission to seize the regime's uranium,” all while calling the war an “excursion” and “a lovely stay.”* Meanwhile, 25 Senate Democrats have signed a letter by Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia requesting that Senator Roger Wicker, the Republican Chairman of the Armed Services Committee launch a bipartisan probe – complete with hearings and a report – into the strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School for girls in Minab, Iran at the beginning of the war. This letter notes that the majority of those killed were girls between ages seven and 12. Moreover, this letter implies that the Pentagon chose this target based on wildly outdated intelligence, raising grave questions about the competence of the military apparatus. While several high-ranking Democrats signed this letter, including Dick Durbin and Cory Booker, along with progressives like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's name is nowhere to be found.* Elsewhere in the region, the Israeli Knesset has passed a new law effectively proscribing the death penalty exclusively to Palestinians. Human Rights Watch states “the bill imposes the death penalty for the deliberate killing of a person with the intention of negating the existence of the State of Israel.'” HRW adds that the new law “mandates execution by hanging, restricts access to legal counsel and visits from family members, limits external oversight, and grants immunity to those involved in carrying out executions.” In a piece calling for the immediate repeal of this law, Erika Guevara-Rosas of Amnesty International writes “By authorizing military courts, which have a conviction rate of over 99% for Palestinian defendants and which are notorious for disregarding due process and fair trial safeguards, to impose effectively mandatory death sentences and ordering the execution within just 90 days of the final ruling, Israel is brazenly granting itself carte blanche to execute Palestinians while stripping away the most basic fair-trial safeguards.” In an interview with CNN, Mustafa Barghouti said this law “confirms very serious fascist tendencies in Israel” and “consolidates further the system of apartheid.”* Anti-Palestinian extremism continues to grow within the United States as well. Al Jazeera reports that last week, domestic law enforcement “foiled a plot against prominent Palestinian activist Nerdeen Kiswani in New York City.” Kiswani is the founder of Within Our Lifetime, a pro-Palestine and anti-Zionist group active in the City. The suspect, apprehended by the FBI in an undercover operation, has been identified as a New Jersey man named Andrew Heifler, a young man affiliated with an offshoot of the far-right Jewish Defense League (JDL), described as an extremist group with a history of violent attacks targeting Arab American activists during the 1970s and 1980s. Heifler was reportedly planning to target Kiswani's home with Molotov cocktails. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the plot, saying “We will not tolerate violent extremism in our city. No one should face violence for their political beliefs or their advocacy…Our city must meet hate with solidarity, and meet fear with an unshakable commitment to justice and to one another.” Kiswani vowed that she “will not stop speaking up for the people of Palestine.”* Also in New York, Congresswoman and possible 2028 presidential candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a private meeting with the powerful local branch of the Democratic Socialists of America. During this meeting AOC was asked whether she would support the imposition of an arms embargo on Israel. According to City and State NY, AOC affirmed that she would and stated that “The Israeli government should be able to finance their own weapons if they seek to arm themselves.” Pressed on whether she would vote against so-called defensive capabilities – namely the Iron Dome – Rep. Ocasio-Cortez definitively answered “yes.” This marks an evolution of her position; AOC previously voted “present” on a bill to provide $1 billion in funding for the Iron Dome in 2021. Many read this as an acknowledgment from AOC that the politics of this issue have shifted, particularly on the Left, and in order to shore up her progressive support she needs to stake out a bold position now.* Turning to the international progressive movement, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has led Spain in a Leftward direction since 2018 despite the rise of the European Right is convening a summit of progressive forces in Barcelona slated for April 17th and 18th. Sánchez, who has chaired the Socialist International since 2022, emphasized that the Right has “for years woven a network of alliances to propagate their national populist discourses adapted to each country,” and stressed that the Left must do the same to remain politically viable, per El País. Notable attendees include Brazilian President Lula, outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. There have been many attempts to unite the international Left, with mixed results, but it is never too late to try.* In our final story on the international Left, the New Democratic Party of Canada – the country's third largest and most progressive major party – has selected former journalist and activist Avi Lewis as their new leader, the BBC reports. This story notes that Lewis' elevation comes in the context of the NDP suffering a steep decline in recent years, going from the main opposition party in 2011, to holding just six seats in Canada's House of Commons today. Lewis – grandson of one of the party's founding members and son of Stephen Lewis, who led the Ontario NDP and served as the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations – ran on a platform designed to revive the struggling party by “prioritising worker rights in the age of artificial intelligence, ending new oil and gas pipelines and projects, and exploring state-owned, non-profit grocery stores.” Despite his illustrious lineage, Lewis holds no seat in parliament and therefore cannot participate in official debates. The NDP faces an uphill climb not only back to power but even to relevance. According to this story, “a quarter of past voters…see the party as ‘irrelevant'...and 40% say its best days are behind it.”* In Los Angeles, a shocking new poll shows City Councilmember Nithya Raman, who entered the race at the last possible moment, in a commanding lead. In this poll, Raman drew 33% support, with incumbent Mayor Karen Bass trailing at 17%, statistically tied with another insurgent progressive candidate, Rae Huang. Other candidates – tech executive Adam Miller and former reality television personality and registered Republican Spencer Pratt – round out the field with 13% and 12% respectively. This poll appears to be an outlier. Other recent polls have shown Bass at 20% to Raman's 9%, and Bass at 25% with Raman at 17%. But, if this poll is accurate, it would be a stunning testament to the success of Raman's campaign thus far and a massive warning signal to Bass. If the Mayor slips any further, she could find herself locked out of the general election by Los Angeles' top-two “jungle primary” structure. This from the LA Times.* Finally, we turn to the world of professional sports. This week, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar introduced the Home Team Act, which, if passed, would require the owners of major league sports teams to allow local communities the option to buy a team before unilaterally relocating across state lines or to a different metro area. This announcement sent ripples through the sports world, with many fans excited by the prospect of keeping their home teams at home. ABC7 Chicago notes that “Sanders specifically mentioned the Bears' threat to leave Chicago,” while the San Diego Union-Tribune believes this bill could keep the Padres in San Diego despite multiple offers to sell. San Diego has been particularly sensitive to this threat since the Chargers left for LA in 2017. In the press conference announcing this bill, Bernie unsubtly displayed the jerseys of the Brooklyn Dodgers, his hometown team, which famously relocated to Los Angeles ahead of the 1958 baseball season. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. This week, we hear from people around the world who have faced these questions. We hear about Maung's mom, who fled while pregnant. Her story, alongside accounts from HRW researchers, paints a picture of resilience and bravery of the migrants who risk everything in pursuit of safety. Finally, we reflect on whether a values-driven ethical framework - rooted in justice and consistency - can be rebuilt in an increasingly unstable world. You can find Omar Shakir here here:X: https://x.com/OmarSShakirIG: https://www.instagram.com/omarishakir/Become a member here:https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/membershipOr give your one-off donation here:https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/donateListen to the audio version of the podcast:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7vXiAjVFnhNI3T9Gkw636aApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-thinking-muslim/id1471798762Purchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merchFind us on:X: https://x.com/thinking_muslimLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-thinking-muslim/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslimBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/thinkingmuslim.bsky.socialThreads: https://www.threads.com/@thinkingmuslimpodcastFind Muhammad Jalal here:X: https://twitter.com/jalalaynInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jalalayns/Sign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comWebsite Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.comDisclaimer:The views expressed in this video are those of the individual speaker(s) and do not represent the views of the host, producers, platform, or any affiliated organisation. Human Rights Watch has become known for their scathing reports on Israel's treatment of Palestinians, accusing the country of committing  apartheid and carrying out acts of genocide in Gaza. So why did the organization suddenly decide to block a report on Palestinians refugees' right to return? In this 'Mehdi Unfiltered' interview, Mehdi speaks with the author of that report, Omar Shakir – who resigned from HRW this week, after nearly a decade of leading the organization's Israel and Palestine team. Senate Republicans had pushed just last week to add up to $15B in aid, but that language was left out. With aid excluded for now, supporters say relief may need to come via supplemental appropriations or future legislation.Congress must pass the funding package by January 30 to avoid another government shutdown. It was also reported yesterday that nationwide E15 language was again dropped, though GOP leaders are discussing a possible supplemental bill that could allow year-round E15 sales.Major Winter Storm RiskA major winter storm is forecast to impact the Southern US this weekend. While the exact track remains uncertain, over 70 million people from Dallas to Little Rock to Nashville are currently under a winter storm watch.Snow, ice, dangerous travel conditions, and power outages are possible. Snow cover remains limited across key HRW wheat areas in the Southern Plains. Temperatures in western Kansas and surrounding regions could fall into the single digits, raising the risk of winter kill depending on snow totals and duration. Livestock stress is also a concern.US–China Trade WatchUS and Chinese officials may soon hold another round of trade talks ahead of the planned April meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.According to the US Trade Representative, negotiations would focus on common goods and services, avoiding sensitive areas like tech and national security.China has already fulfilled its commitment to purchase 12 mmt of US soybeans. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both sides are now looking ahead to China's pledge to buy 25 mmt annually through 2028, though Trump continues to push for larger volumes.Europe, Greenland & TariffsPresident Trump announced he will refrain from imposing new tariffs on European countries, following meetings at the World Economic Forum. He stated that a framework for a future deal involving Greenland has been reached, marking a major shift from prior tariff threats. While details remain limited, Denmark continues to oppose any US takeover.Grain Market RecapSoybean futures rebounded Wednesday, with the most-active Mar26 contract gaining roughly 12 cents, settling near $10.65.Support came from a slow start to Brazil's soybean harvest due to rainfall in northern regions, along with comments from Treasury Secretary Bessent pointing to ongoing Chinese demand for US soybeans.Global Protein TradeChina has reopened its market to Canadian beef imports, ending a ban that had been in place since 2021. Initial shipments are expected to be small, but the move is a positive long-term opportunity for Canada's cattle industry.Meanwhile, US beef exports to China have declined sharply over the past year amid ongoing trade tensions.India & Wheat ExportsIndia has approved the export of 500,000 tons of wheat flour and related products. Wheat exports had been restricted since May 2022, but a strong monsoon is expected to boost domestic supplies.India is typically self-sufficient in wheat and is sometimes a net exporter. Its re-entry into the export market is considered a bearish factor for global wheat prices.
