A textbook "moment" of Bach -- in a charming setting of the three verses of the German song "O Lamb of God, Most Holy," suddenly near the end of the third verse Bach finally heeds the text and shows us the strange despair we are praying for mercy to avoid. He employs several musical devices in this sudden moment: a change in meter, a suggestion of a distant tonality, and a barrage of harsh chromaticism (notes outside of the key). First we learn the background and the tune "O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig" before showing how Bach introduces this Cantus Firmus (melody) in this organ prelude's beginning and first verse where it is heard on top. The Cantus Firmus moves lower in the second verse, and in the third it is down at the bottom in the organist's pedalboard. Here the text of the last line changes from "have mercy on us" to "grant us peace." Ending strong and firm, Bach gives us peace from that sudden harsh "moment." Netherlands Bach Society: "O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig" as played by Wolfgang Zerer for All of Bach Thank you to listener David for the excellent suggestion.
This episode was originally recorded for Cody Cook's podcast Cantus-Firmus. In our conversation, we discuss medieval Christianity, the Enlightenment, and the long road to religious freedom in the west. I am a social studies teacher and my class covers the global middle ages, and it was a lot of fun to take a dive into historical issues that I teach in the classroom and draw comparisons to their theological, social, and political relevance. This was a really fun conversation that addresses a different but related set of topics that I cover on the show, and I know you are going to enjoy it! Today we look at a document written by Girolamo Dandini, Professor of Theology at Perugia, sent in 1596 by Pope Clement VIII as a nuncio to the Maronites of Lebanon. From August 8th when he visited Limassol, then Larnaca and Nicosia until the 27th when he left for Tripoli. He would return to Larnaca on March 19th 1597 and departed for Venice on April 12th. Intro & outro excerpts of Cantus Firmus monks (available via YouTube audio library)

This week, I'm a little annoyed. I've seen way too many posts where I've seen Christians allude to hurting, killing, or punishing their enemies. Be it other denominations of Christians, their political foes, or others. So, I think it's time to talk about the heart of Christianity, love. Specifically, we're going to talk about how Jesus told us to love our enemies. This is countercultural. This makes no sense to most people. But, it is a mandate from our Lord. So, maybe we should heed it. Cody Cook from Cantus Firmus and John Dangelo the Anti-War War Vet join us to talk about enemy love, what it looked like in the early church, what it can look like in our own lives, and who we should be.

Colleen is talking faith and politics today! Whether or not faith plays a role in your politics, it is impossible to escape the role the Christian faith has played in politics in recent years. And if you've never contemplated to what degrees church and state are and should be separated, it's worth considering. The guest is Cody Cook. Cody is a theology graduate student living in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of three books and the host of the podcast Cantus Firmus which explores theological questions as they relate to the wider culture. Cody and Colleen discuss what the Bible says about the role the Church plays within the state, the lenses each side tends to view the world through, and how we can be political but not partisan with our faith. Connect with Cody! You can find him and info about his podcast on his website and check out his books! Year of Action steps: If you are a person of faith, regardless of your political leanings consider this week the ways in which your politics may only be of benefit a specific group of people rather than the whole, particularly if those people are people who agree with and think like you? How might your politics expand to benefit people who are different from you? How can we hold more loosely to our partisan politics in the name of speaking truth to power? If you are not a person of faith and you want to understand more how faith influences politics on both sides of the aisle, consider listening to The Pantsuit Politics ladies. Both are Christian women whose faith informs their politics even though they ascribe to different parties. They give a good picture of how faith can influence politics in the best ways. A l’orgue, Sigrid Perez. Trompette, Clemens Christoffel. Production : RSI

This prelude is one of my favorites to play when I need to slow down the pace of life. It is a pastorale as indicated by the 3rds in the melody line and the 12/8 time signature. The slow-moving, yet joyful Cantus Firmus is so beautifully augmented by the counterpoint voice. It is always amazing to me to think of the volume of wonderful music that Bach composed. I hope that you enjoy my interpretation and recording of Bach's Prelude in E Major No. 9.
