This week on The Nerd Nebula, the fearless (and questionably competent) trio of Jay Silver, Brother Barkington, and Kowasu are given a simple task by the ever-mysterious Shady Vendor: capture a Carcharodon carcharias (Great White Shark) pup. Easy, right? There's just one tiny issue—spaceships aren't exactly known for their seaworthiness.   Enter Vicious Mechanical Modifications, a shop that sounds both highly reputable and definitely not sketchy. There, they meet a man named Jimothy, who looks like he was born in a toolbox. He assures them that with enough duct tape, questionable engineering, and an anti-gravity hydrofoil (whatever that is), their spaceship will be ocean-ready in no time.   Because, obviously, strapping boat parts to a spaceship makes total sense.   Now, with their barely-floating death trap prepped, Jay, Brother Barkington, and Kowasu set off to hunt down a shark puppy.   What could possibly go wrong?  (Spoiler: A lot.)

This week's episode is The Great White Shark, aka the  largest macropredatory fish of the oceans. First, what the heck happened to sharks 19 million years ago when 90% of sharks just disappeared from the ocean??? This unknown event didn't seem to affect other ocean animals, but wiped out between 70% and 90% of shark species. Scientists have no idea what happened to the sharks, and we'll have to wait probably a decade for more information, cause that's how science works. Of all the different shark species, the great white shark is responsible for most of the recorded shark bite incidents on humans. Does that make them bad? No. And, luckily for humans, we're either too boney for the Great White's liking, or we're able to get away before we bleed to death. You might think White Sharks are related to the Giant Megalodon (which could literally grow to the size of a semitrailer), but they're actually more closely related to Mako Sharks, which you've probably never heard of.Due to recent scientific research we've recently learned a lot of about Great White Sharks that we didn't know just a few years ago. This topic has bonus content Every time I step foot in the ocean, I can't help but think about sharks. In this episode, we look at the actual number of shark attacks, the type of sharks involved and which type of activities are most likely to result in an encounter. Review the year of the shark https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/2001/sep/05/features11.g23 The summer of the shark had no rise in actual shark attacks https://news.ufl.edu/archive/2002/02/summer-of-the-shark-in-2001-more-hype-than-fact-new-numbers-show.html The rescue of Jessie Arbogast set the stage for a slow news summer Although most of these interactions result in minor injuries akin to that of a dog bite, about six of the 75–100 unprovoked attacks that currently occur worldwide each year result in human mortality [12].       (Note that an unprovoked attack is defined as a bite or near bite (fended off by human intervention) of a person (or the board on which he/she is perched) in the shark’s natural environment in the absence of any human provocation.) https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0211049&type=printable Shark species Three shark species that attract much of that attention are the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), and white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). These species are of interest to biologists because they are large, migratory species of cosmopolitan distribution While shark populations are poorly defined, shark-human interactions in the form of unprovoked attacks have been increasing in raw numbers for more than a century and in increasingly diverse places Outcomes of shark attacks Although not the focus of this contribution, the majority of all shark attack outcomes were non-fatal (85%), and typically less than about 25% of attacks were fatal in countries with >50 attacks since 1960. https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/factors/victim-activity/ https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/yearly-worldwide-summary/ Shark attacks vs other events https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/odds/compare-risk/death/ https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/odds/compare-risk/lightning-strikes/ https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/odds/compare-risk/rip-currents/ Listen to my other topics https://sci-vs-fear.com/podcasts/

Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes Steve Alten to the show. Steve writes horror/science fiction and his book series MEG releases as a movie on August 11, 2018. See the movie trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udm5jUA-2bs. About my guest: Steve Alten grew up in Philadelphia, earning his Bachelors degree in Physical Education at Penn State University, a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Delaware, and a Doctorate of Education at Temple University. Steve penned novel he had been thinking about for years and he eventually finished MEG; A Novel of Deep Terror. Steve sold his car to pay for editing fees. On September (Friday) the 13th, 1996, Steve lost his general manager’s job at a wholesale meat plant. Four days later his agent had a two-book, seven figure deal with Bantam Doubleday. About his book: Seven years ago, and seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, Dr. Jonas Taylor encountered something that changed the course of his life. Once a Navy deep-sea submersible pilot, now a marine paleontologist, Taylor is convinced that a remnant population of Carcharodon megalodon—prehistoric sharks growing up to 70 feet long, that subsisted on whales—lurks at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. When offered the opportunity to return to those crushing depths in search of the Megs, Taylor leaps at the chance… but the quest for scientific knowledge (and personal vindication) becomes a desperate fight for survival, when the most vicious predator that the earth has ever known is freed to once-again hunt the surface. Steven Alten "Meg": On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean's deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he's sure he saw but still can't prove exists – Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds. Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub. Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he's never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.
