Welcome to Grit Nation. I'm Joe Cadwell the writer, producer, and host of the show and on today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with author Kathleen McLaughlin, about her new book titled; Blood Money – The Story of Life, Death and Profit Inside America's Blood Industry. In her book Kathleen turns the lights on a healthcare crisis hidden in plain sight and reveals a stunning example of economic inequality in action. Intertwined with her own story as a working-class American managing a chronic illness, she finds an industry that targets and exploits America's most marginalized communities to feed the hunger for human blood plasma.Over 20 million pay-for-extractions occur each year of American blood, which is then processed, and packaged for sale as part of a $30 billion-dollar global industry.Blood Money reveals the controversial and unbalanced power structures behind the blood industry. From China's blood black market to Silicon Valley tech startups, this electrifying expose demonstrates the shadowy overlap between big medicine and big business while painting a searing portrait of the extent to which American industry is eager to feed on the country's most vulnerable. The Show NotesKathleen McLaughlinhttps://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Kathleen-McLaughlin/179283499Blood Moneyhttps://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Blood-Money/Kathleen-McLaughlin/9781982171964NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NorthwestUnion Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. Welcome to  the Grit Nation podcast, I'm Joe Cadwell and in this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with logger, blacksmith, carpenter, and internet sensation Scott Wadsworth.  Better known to over 1 million YouTube followers as the Essential Craftsman, Scott, together with his son Nate, have created a wealth of entertaining and educational videos designed to help anyone interested in learning more about blue-collar craft skills. Scotts laid back, straight shooting, and down to earth demeaner resonates well both on and off camera and I found this interview to be truly enjoyable. We'll start our conversation by learning how Scott got involved in the building trades over 4 decades ago and what he believes some of the bigger industry changes and challenges have been. Next, Scott will share details of individuals he has met as a professional builder and what characteristics and attributes they possessed that made them so memorable and influential in his life. Later, we'll dig into the concept of “workmanship of risk vs. workmanship of certainty” and why a healthy balance of both is needed both on and off the job to achieve a career and life, full of meaning and reward. We'll then discuss why now more than ever a career as a building trades professional can produce the same or greater socio-economic gains as a college degree and investigate some of the factors responsible for shifting this paradigm.  And we'll wrap up our conversation by discussing what it means to be a Craftsman and why Scott's definition of success doesn't rely solely on how many digits you have in your savings account. The Show Notes The Essential Craftsmanhttps://essentialcraftsman.com/The Essential Craftsman Podcasthttps://essentialcraftsman.com/podcastGrit Nation Host Interview on The Essential Craftsman Podcasthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MprNsllxr-g&t=1224sDavid Pye- The Nature and Art of Workmanshiphttps://www.amazon.com/Nature-Art-Workmanship-David-Pye/dp/0713689315The Yankee Screwdriverhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_screwdriverThe Show NotesGrit Nation  Webpagehttps://www.gritnationpodcast.comWin Grit Nation Merchhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageEmail comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit Nation is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/  NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong!!Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. On today's episode I have the pleasure to speak with author Daisy Pitken about her new book titled, On the Line - A story of class, solidarity, and Two Women's Epic Fight to Build a Union. In her book, Daisy recounts the story of a grueling 5 yearlong bottom-up campaign she was involved in to help unionize industrial laundry workers in Phoenix, Arizona.  This book is both riveting and intimate and paints a humanizing portrait of the American labor movement.  We begin our conversation by learning about the hazardous jobsite conditions that drove these primarily Latino workers to seek union representation in the first place, and how the multinational corporate owned cleaning firms deployed strong arm, union busting tactics in an attempt to squash their organizing efforts. Next, we'll look into the role professional union organizers play in guiding those who seek representation and analyze the differences in what's at stake for both.    Later Daisy will elaborate on her relationship with rank-and-file activist Alma Gomez Garcia who she met on the campaign, and why she feels Alma's unshakable courage and resolve makes her one of the gutsiest fighters she's ever known. And we'll end our conversation by unpacking the underlying personal attributes that are needed to survive a years long campaign and how true transformation and growth can be achieved while doing so. This is one of my favorite interviews to date and I hope you can help share Daisy's message of inspiration with those who you think may benefit from it.The Show NotesDaisy Pitkinhttps://www.daisypitkin.net/Bookshop.orghttps://bookshop.org/books/on-the-line-a-story-of-class-solidarity-and-two-women-s-epic-fight-to-build-a-union-9781643750712/9781643750712Grit Nation  Webpagehttps://www.gritnationpodcast.comWin Grit Nation Merchhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageFollow Grit Nation on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/gritnationpodcastEmail comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit NW is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/

Welcome to Grit Nation. I'm Joe Cadwell the host of the show, and in this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with jobsite foreman, self-taught communication expert and author of two books on construction leadership, Brian Lousy.Brian landed on the literary scene with a thud in early 2016 with his book, The Mind-Readers Guide to Supervision, in which he introduced the practice of managing construction projects by intentionally holding back production goals and expectations from his crews. In this book Brian promotes a supervisory style that requires workers to use their ability to mindread or guess what their foreman or supervisor's thoughts are, in order to get their work done. Now after selling nearly a half- dozen copies, he is back with his second work titled, Git-er Did Dummy: A Guide to Leadership the Lousy Way. In Git-er Did Dummy, Brian again introduces a unique and unconventional style of leadership, by claiming that a crew's loyalty and respect can be achieved by using the hazing, belittling, and dismissive behavior techniques taught in his book. We'll open our conversation by learning why Brian wanted to write Get-er Did and the philosophy behind it. Next, we'll discuss why Brian feels most leadership programs are a waste of time and why he invented the acronym R.A.G.E to deal with conflict resolution on the jobsite and at home.Brian will then explain why effective leadership communication shouldn't rely so much on calm, rational and respectful discourse, but more on the volume of your voice. And we end our conversation by learning why Brian believes derogatory name calling on the job can be an effective tool in inspiring others to reach their fullest potential. And incase you're wondering if this is real. I hope you agree.Season 4 promises to be a strong one as well. For example, my interview with New York Times contributor and  author of Dirty Work - Essential Jobs and the Hidden Toll of Inequality in America, Eyal Press is going to be a great one.Eyal and I discuss occupations that often takes place in the shadows of society. From workers on the “kill floors” of industrial slaughterhouses to drone pilots who carry out targeted assassinations, his book Dirty Work, digs deep into the nature of morally questionable work and the mental strain it places on those who perform it.In another season 4 release, I talk with award-winning journalist, Katrina Onstad, about her book, The Weekend Effect – which addresses; The life-changing benefits of taking time off and challenging the cult of overwork.  Katrina and I will discuss organized labor's role in establishing the 2-day weekend and why it is so important to protect these sacred 48 hours. This is just a sampling of what's to come. Please be sure to like, subscribe, or follow the show so you won't miss an episode. And oh yeah, share it to with someone you think may get something out of it.You may have noticed the show went through a bit rebranding recently. What originally started as a regional show highlighting carpenters in the Pacific NW has grown in size and scope and is now listened to nationally and internationally. So regardless if you're a carpenter, iron worker, plumber, electrician, laborer or work in a specialized craft, our futures as the builders of infrastructure and generational wealth is something to be proud of.As always, the mission of this podcast is to shine a positive light on those who choose to do the tough, dirty, overlooked and often underappreciated work that keeps the gears of society turning. As 2022 begins, but my promise to you is to continue provide quality, informative, and thought-provoking content that is beneficial to your life and career. So that's it. I hope you have a start to the new year. And until next time remember to:Be safe, be kind and stay union strong. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with professor of sociology at Middlebury College, workers' rights activist, and the author of two books on labor, Jamie McCallum. Jamie's latest effort titled, Worked Over: How Round-the-Clock Work is Killing the American Dream; addresses the loss of agency the average American worker has in managing their work - life balance and why labor's next big battle may not just be about wages but about time too. We'll start our conversation by understanding the give and take relationship labor and management have shared over the ages and how this paradigm shifted from the agrarian task-based formula to a “time is money” model with the advent of clocks. Next, we'll investigate the 1970's resurgence of Corporate Class Power and how it has led to the extremes in income inequality we see today and how this resurgence has led to a dynamic which enables a CEO to make over 350 times what the average worker does. Later, we'll discuss the triple threat that is unique to US workers and how over scheduling, under scheduling and volatile work hours contribute to work instability and why the American Dream is alive in well in other nations but is falling further away from the grasp of many Americans.  And we'll finish our conversation by discussing why Jamie believes “we should redesign our economy so that trading most of our waking hours for money, isn't the only pathway to a dignified life,” The Show NotesJamie McCallumhttps://www.jamiekmccallum.com/Worked Overhttps://www.basicbooks.com/titles/jamie-k-mccallum/worked-over/9781541618343/Join the Grit Nationhttps://forms.gle/WEKcA76y3Wegmv8z7For comments, questions or suggestions about the show email:GritNW@gmail.comShare the link below with friends, family members or co-workers and score good karma points, you'll be a better person for it, I promise.https://Buildnw.org/podcastFollow Grit Nation on Instagram.  https://www.instagram.com/gritnationpodcast/Grit Nation is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong!! A Frighteningly Brief History of Halloween

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 25, 2021 8:53

Halloween is a tradition that started around 2000 years ago with the Celtic people who lived in an area that is now known as Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. These ancient Celts would hold a yearly festival called a Samhain to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of the cold and dark winter months, a time of year they associated with human death. During this annual autumn festival, the Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes made of animal heads and skins in the hopes of warding off ghosts and spirits, which they believed returned to earth to damage their crops, wreak havoc amongst the living and generally be a pain in the rear. Sometime around 43 A.D., the ever-expanding Roman Empire had conquered much of this Keltic territory. During the 400 years more of less of their rule, a few festivals of Roman origin were eventually combined with the traditional Samhain celebration. Inl 1000 A.D., a Pope declared November 1 the official day to honor the dead. All Souls Day as it was known, is now believed to be the churches attempt to replace the Celtic festival with a church-sanctioned holiday. That said, All Souls' Day was celebrated pretty much like the ancient holiday was, with big bonfires, parades and folks dressed up in all sorts of costumes like saints, angels and oh yeah devils. All Souls Day was also known as All-hallows. The night before, was known as All-Hallows Eve, which as you probably have guessed by now became Halloween. In the U.S during the late 1800s, there was a move to make Halloween into a holiday that focused more on community and neighborly get-togethers than on ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. Parents were encouraged by community leaders to take anything “frightening” or “grotesque” out of Halloween celebrations. Dang.Because of these efforts, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious overtones. No more animal sacrifices in other words. At the turn of the 20th century, Halloween parties for both kids and adults became the most common way to celebrate evening. Which brings us to now where Halloween is a month-long celebration of pumpkin patches, corn mazes, scream parks, scary movies, costume parties and more all culminating in a night of parentally supervised trick-or-treating.It's estimated that Americans spend around $6 billion dollars annually on Halloween, making it the country's second largest commercial holiday after Christmas.Join Grit NW Nation here:(could this be any easier?)https://forms.gle/WEKcA76y3Wegmv8z7For comments, questions or suggestions about the show send an  email to:GritNW@gmail.comGrit NW Newsletterhttps://www.nwcarpenters.org/news/grit/Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. https://unionhomeplus.org/ Union Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. What could be better? Little did they know as they began their long drive north they were headed into a Derecho all their own. Welcome to Stolen, a special series within the Grit NW podcast that investigates wage theft, tax fraud and worker misclassification. The goal of Stolen is to shine a light on the crooked contractors who perpetrate these greed driven crimes and expose the damage that they do to the U.S taxpayer and the working middle class. In this episode we investigate just what went wrong in Cedar Rapids and how the 6 Blusky employees from Texas eventually found themselves without food, lodging or even the money to get home.To help me tell this story I spoke with Royce Peterson the carpenter's union, lead business representative in Eastern Iowa.Joining us on the call were Public Affairs Director Richard Kajayski and Burt Johnson, General Counsel from the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters.NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong! The Grit Nation Join The Nation and spread the word on how unions are building lives and careers to be proud of.Android Users Post Your Show Review Here Your input really does matter, so please take a moment to rate and review the show. Maybe you’re dealing with issues on your jobsite right now?Being asked regularly to work through your scheduled breaks? Job shack or porta-johns not up to speed? Concerns with your pay?For many union members, especially new members, or apprentices, dealing with these issues head on and by themselves may be out of their comfort zone. So what do you? Contact your council rep?Sure, that’s an option, but calling in the big guns shouldn’t always be your first choice. How about looking into the contract yourself? See what it says?Well, that’s a possibility, but I’ll be the first one to admit that contract language can sometimes be confusing and filled with ambiguity making them difficult to decipher and understand. So where do you turn?Well, in this episode of Grit NW we’ll look into the role and responsibilities of union stewards on the job, and why they are so important in keeping a worksite running smoothly.Hi, I’m Joe Cadwell, the writer producer and host of Grit NW and today I talk with Council Rep and local 70 member Paul Galovin. Paul is a steward advocate and trainer, and he is going to help us understand what rank-and-file members take on when they step up to the union steward position. Well learn what personality traits make a good steward and how they develop the skills necessary to become effective jobsite organizers, negotiators, counselors, peacemakers and guardians of our contracts. This episode is part of my effort to recognize opportunities within our organization for members to step-up and take ownership of their union and their future.NW Carpenters Unionhttps://www.nwcarpenters.org/Join Grit NW Nation here:(could this be any easier?)https://forms.gle/WEKcA76y3Wegmv8z7For comments, questions or suggestions about the show send an  email to:GritNW@gmail.comYou can also share this link to the Grit NW webpage with friends, family members or co-workers and score good karma points, you'll be a better person for it, I promise:https://Buildnw.org/podcastGrit NW is now on the Twitter!!  How cool is that, right?Check us out at @GritNWGrit NW is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong! The Grit Nation Join The Nation and spread the word on how unions are building lives and careers to be proud of.Labor Radio / Podcast Network Discover shows to learn more about organized labor movements across our nation and around the world.

In this episode I look into the role and responsibilities of the Union Delegate.Delegates are elected by the members, to represent their local union at the regional level, and play an important role in shaping the direction of the union.Delegates bring forward, and vote on decisions that can affect the lives and livelihoods of their constituents and their families. These decisions include operating budgets, organizing direction, and political endorsements.Delegates are also responsible for electing the Executive Committee members, including the Executive Secretary-Treasurer or EST, the President, and the Vice-President. The role of delegate is hugely important in any well-functioning organization and today I have the pleasure of speaking with NW Carpenters representative, local 146 member and union delegate Don Stover.Hi, I’m Joe Cadwell the writer, producer and host of Grit NW. I am also President of the NW Carpenters Union and I can speak from personal experience the value in working closely with councils’ delegates to affect positive change for our members. We’ll start today’s conversation by learning what Don feels he has gained since being elected to the position and more importantly what he has been able to give back.Next, we will discuss, what qualities Don feels a delegate needs to have to be effective in their roll. Later we will look at the responsibilities of a delegate and how the decisions they make can have huge repercussions on the operation of our crafts. And we will wrap up our conversation by giving you the information you need if you are interested in becoming a leader in our union by running for the office of delegate.

Brand recognition is hugely important in developing trust and allegiance to products, teams, and organizations. Brand logos can offer visual markers, that trigger emotional responses buried deep in our subconscious. Advertising agencies understand this and literally capitalize on our inherent desire to identify with merchandise, services or even other like-minded individuals who sport the same brand. Don’t believe me? Try this, close your eyes, unless you’re driving that is, and picture what first comes to mind when I say the word…. McDonalds. Well, if your anything like me you see the golden arches. How about Nike? See that iconic swoosh? Yep, me too.Now try… Target. There it is, the red bullseye. The name is, literally the logo. This mental imagery can greatly influence your decisions and emotions and is the reason savvy organizations from sports teams to corporations put so much emphasis on getting the right look for their logo. For unions curating brand recognition in the form of t-shirt’s, hats and stickers can pay off in many ways including member pride, solidarity, and allegiance. This is especially important for unions because our ability to identify with and gather strength from our fellow brother and sister carpenters is crucial for our ability to grow and prosper. On todays show I’ll be talking with Greg Mooseker from the Frank Doolittle Company, based in Bellevue, Washington. Frank Doolittle has been in the business of providing Union and USA made products with custom designs to organizations across America and Canada for over 30 years. In this episode you will hear what goes into the design and manufacturing of brand worthy logos and how the Union employees of this NW business go above and beyond to meet their customers’ expectations. The Show NotesThe Frank Doolittle Companyhttps://www.frankdoolittle.com/NW Carpenters Unionhttps://www.nwcarpenters.org/Join Grit NW Nation here:(could this be any easier?)https://forms.gle/WEKcA76y3Wegmv8z7For comments, questions or suggestions about the show send an  email to:GritNW@gmail.comYou can also share this link to the Grit NW webpage with friends, family members or co-workers and score good karma points, you'll be a better person for it, I promise:https://Buildnw.org/podcastGrit NW is now on the Twitter!!
