My guest today is the writer Charlie Higson, author of On His Majesty's Secret Service, the latest Bond continuation novel. Written to coincide with King Charles's coronation and the 60th anniversary of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the book brings Bond into the modern era in a narrative that identifies very real geopolitical threats with some good old Bondian adventure. For those of you to whom the name Charlie Higson his familiar, that's because he was one of the writers and performers of The Fast Show, a cult British comedy show from the mid-90s. In this episode, Charlie and I discuss his literary tastes through the four books that have shaped his work, as well as his creative practices, and of course the way to achieve a new rendition of the world's most fabulous spy. Modern Bond is less anchored in mid-Century wartime solemnity, and more attuned to the nuanced global landscape of 2024, which made for a really refreshing read. From his diverse reading selections to his personal take on the character, Charlie's insights were both enriching and hilarious. Whether you're a Bond enthusiast or just generally a lover of literary discussions, this episode is an absolute treasure trove of insight and inspiration – and not one to be missed! Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Charlie's four books were: Gormenghast, Mervyn Peake (1946-59) Pop 1280, Jim Thompson (1964) The Watcher, Charles Maclean (1982) From Russia with Love, Ian Fleming (1957)
This Podcast is the 2nd in a 4 Part series on Edinburgh city. Ghosts, witches and skeletons all revealed while building Edinburgh's New Town would have been the Newspaper Headlines in 1780. And it is strange that the people of Edinburgh still use the name, ‘the New Town' when it was built so long ago! This is a story which follows on from my previous Podcast on the Old Town which had become overcrowded, filthy and disease ridden and something had to give. Effectively, the rich moved out and many would have left Scotland altogether had it not been for the foresight of the City Fathers who acknowledged a need for a new start beyond the city walls of the Old Town. You will hear about the draining of the Norloch, the cesspit where most of Edinburgh's Old Town detritus was deposited and the macabre findings by men who worked on the project. You will tour the Streets of the New Town with me and hear of the prestigious buildings and the prestigious individuals who inhabited those fabulous Georgian dwellings, such as Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. You will also hear from Sheonah Martin, the Manager at the Georgian House, who kindly agreed to be interviewed and to give us an insight into 1780s Edinburgh living and how the young ladies of the day met their husbands to be. And thankyou to the National Trust for Scotland for looking after so much of Scotland's heritage.
The Scotch Whisky industry is roaring along, setting new records for sales every year as the global demand for whisky continues to grow. The last "golden age" for Scotch Whisky is generally considered to be the late 1800's, when distilleries flourished all over Scotland. That begs the question: are we in a new golden age for Scotch Whisky? Veteran whisky writers, historians, and consultants Charles Maclean and Ian Buxton take on that question and other key issues in an extended WhiskyCast In-Depth conversation this week. In the news, a Pacific Northwest malting house has left distilleries and brewers in the lurch after suddenly closing this week, while Speyside Distillers is being questioned about the location of casks sold to investors more than 20 years ago.
In 1882, the threat of assassination was in the air. The year before, Tsar Alexander II was killed by an assassin's bomb, then in July, American President James Garfield was also murdered. Queen Victoria, on the throne for 45 years seemed vulnerable. The final attempt on her life was from a young man named Roderick Maclean. His father Charles was the owner of a satirical magazine called Fun, but Roderick's life was anything but that. Roderick grew up dreaming of a literary career, but the family lost its fortune and an accidental blow to the young MacLean's head caused a marked change in personality. Roderick began to see enemies everywhere and became fascinated by the colour blue and the number four. Unable to hold down a job, Roderick tramped around England from one workhouse or asylum to another. Dr Bob Nicholson visits the Punch Tavern in central London and describes the Victorian love of satire and comedy in such publications as Punch and Charles Maclean's Fun. As he finds out more about Roderick Maclean's story, Bob throws a light on the life of the Victorian wanderer, and the asylum system and Victoria's later life. He traces Roderick's final journey as a free man, from Southsea where he had befriended a landlady named Mrs Sorrell, up through Hampshire and into Windsor, where he waited, armed with a pistol, for the Queen to arrive.
1983 was a very bad year to be in the Scotch Whisky business. Sales had dried up in the face of changing consumer tastes and economic woes, and the industry was sitting on a "whisky loch" of millions of gallons of whisky no one wanted to buy. That led to the permanent or temporary closings of 14 distilleries, along with blending and bottling plants throughout Scotland. 40 years later, the industry has recovered - but have the lessons from 1983 been remembered? We'll talk with historians Charles Maclean and Dr. Nick Morgan about the circumstances that led to mass closings back then, and what's different today. In the news, UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has slapped Scotch Whisky with a 10.1% increase in excise duty, and industry leaders are fighting back claiming broken promises. Kentucky state lawmakers are trying to get a bill passed in the next few days that would phase out the state's barrel tax on maturing whiskey, and David Beckham is reported to be stepping away from his bespoke whisky brand.
The small settlement of Port Natal had hardly grown by 1830. Dingane had moved his ikhanda which he named uMgungundlovu to the eMakhosini valley, close to Singonyama or Lion hill, just south of the White Umfolozi River. The traders around Port Natal by now had mostly married Khoekhoe or AmaZulu women and were part of the Zulu landscape, but by 1834, colonial authorities were going to become far more interested in this part of southern Africa. By now Charles Maclean aka John Ross was in his late teens - he'd arrived as a 9 year-old, Thomas Halstead had arrived as a 14 year-old in 1825, also living close to the port was were John Cane, Nathanial Isaacs and Henry Ogle. Only one dwelling in the port looked vaguely European, the fort and none had what could be called furniture. Most of the structures were the Zulu beehive design, and the traders wore a combination of Zulu costumes and basic garments sewn from skins, with homemade straw hats. The whites had taken local wives or concubines, known as iziXebe, some had Khoisan wives and servants. The traders had paid lobola for the women, handing over goods and cattle to the bride's father to pay him for his loss of labour in the family units because it was the women who did most of the work in AmaZulu society. Cape Governor Sir Lowry Cole received a report that the Americans had been trading with the Zulu and seemed to be the vanguard of a possible attempt at seizing this area for themselves. Cole wrote to the Colonial Office saying “how embarrassing such a neighbour might eventually prove…” to the Cape. So he turned to Scottish assistant Staff Surgeon at the Cape garrison, Dr Andrew Smith. There are few official expeditions in the history of South Africa about which less is known than that of Dr Andrew Smiths' visit to Dingane in 1832. The real motive for the expedition was never outlined, and its a black hole in the South African Archives, as well as the Public Record Office in London. No official report exists. While this was causing some excitement, things were happening at a place called Knysna. The good Ship Knysna was built in the Knysna lagoon starting in 1826 when her keel was laid, and she sailed on her first voyage with a cargo of timber for Cape Town in July 1831. The Knsyna was still sailing around the English coast in 1873.

Moss & John R. Hume, The making of Scotch whisky: a history of the Scotch whisky distilling industry (Edinburgh: James & James, 1981) Man kan också slå ett slag för de här, ännu något torrare: Ronald B. Weir, The history of the Distillers Company, 1877–1939: Diversification and growth in whisky and chemicals (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999) Ross Wilson, ”The sources and nature of statistical information in special fields of statistics: The Scotch whisky industry”, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series A, vol. The scandal that created the world's most successful spirit, 3 uppl. (1995; Glasgow: The angels' share, 2009). Nicholas Morgans bok om Johnnie Walker heter A long stride: The story of the world's No. 1 Scotch whisky (Edinburgh: Canongate, 2020). This week is part two of a two part special where we join acclaimed whisky writer Charles Maclean. In this second part, we discuss changes in the whisky industry over the years, Glen Grant's success within the Italian market, and Charles' role in Ken Loach's classic The Angles' Share."
This week we joining legendary whisky writer, Charles Maclean for a special two part edition. Coined as Scotland's leading whisky expert, Charles holds many accolades including Keeper of The Quaich and an MBE. In this first part we discuss how his career began, the relationship between whisky and writing, and his favourite dram (he tastes over 1000 a year).
In more than 40 years of writing about whisky, Charles Maclean has achieved global recognition and no shortage of accolades for his work. He's a Master of the Quaich – the highest honour in the Scotch whisky industry – and a member of the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. In fact, he was also its founding editor.Charles has written 18 books and counting on whisky. His magnum opus, Malt Whisky, was first published in 1997.It's been translated into nine languages and was the recipient of a prestigious Glenfiddich award, and his 2003 book Scotch Whisky: A Liquid History won the James Beard Award for ‘Best Wine and Spirits Book.'And in June 2021 his services to Scotch whisky were further recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.Charles was appointed as an MBE – a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. So, stay with me this episode as Charles and I discuss some of his career highlights, his love/hate relationship with writing, and what it's like to taste ultra-aged whiskies retailing at more than $100,000 a bottle. He shares his insights on the age-old debate of blends vs single malts, the resurrection of the legendary Brora and Port Ellen Scotch whisky distilleries, and his opinion on Tasmanian whisky, after visiting in 2019.
Proof Spirit [is] that which, at the Temperature of Fifty-one degrees by Fahrenheit's Thermometer, weighs exactly Twelve Thirteenth Parts of an equal measure of Distilled Water, and also to determine the Strengths of all other Spirits, in proportion to the Quantity of such Proof Spirit which is contained therein […]” Vill ni kolla själva är referensen som följer: ”An Act to repeal an Act made in the Fifty sixth Year of His present Majesty's Reign, for establishing the Use of an Hydrometer called Sike's Hydrometer, in ascertaining the Strength of Spirits, instead of Clarke's Hydrometer; and for making other Provisions in lieu thereof”, 23/5 1818, 58 Geo.
Michael S. Moss & John R. Hume, The making of Scotch whisky: a history of the Scotch whisky distilling industry (1981). Master of the Quaich and entry to the Whisky Hall of Fame is bestowed upon only the best of the best and Charles Maclean fits that category. With 18 books under his belt, founding member of the Whisky magazine, Whisky correspondent for Scottish Field and host of a Whisky TV channel, it was a delight to interview this true whisky connoisseur who did not hold back during our discussion. As a prelude to the interview, I look at different whiskies around the world and also the whisky regions of Scotland that Charles comments upon later. But the gem of the Podcast is the full and frank discussion on the whisky industry today and Charles' take on where the industry is heading.

Since so many people are working from home, "self-isolating" or more because of the coronavirus crisis, we've decided to produce some extra content to help you pass the time. Earlier this month during DramFest 2020 in Christchurch, New Zealand, WhiskyCast's Mark Gillespie took part in a panel discussion on "the past and future of whisky" with veteran whisky writer Charles Maclean, Michael Fraser Milne of the Whisky Galore shop in Christchurch, and moderator Dave Broom. Their hour-long discussion is a bit too long for one of our regular episodes, but we thought you might enjoy listening to it on its own. The panel covered everything from the collapse of the Scotch Whisky industry in the early 80's to what the future holds given the combination of a growing craft distilling movement, global politics, and climate change. Thanks to Michael and Stella Fraser Milne of Whisky Galore and DramFest 2020 for helping to make this special episode possible, along with the sound crew at Christchurch Town Hall and the staff at Whisky Galore.
Charles MacLean is 'Whisky Max', one of the world's foremost experts on Blended and Single Malt Scotch, and is an absolute icon of the industry in the UK. He's written 17 books about the spirit, is on many a judging panel, acts as a consultant for various companies and has been named a Master of the Quaich. This week, he takes us through all things whisky - from how best to taste, to some of its history and some fantastic stories to boot. Then, we dial the third best bar in the world, the Manhattan at the Regent Hotel in Singapore, to chat to Head Bartender Cedric Mendoza for the Free Pour Five.
Charles Maclean is arguably one of the most prolific Scotch whisky writers around, and his years of research and writing have given him a unique historical perspective on whisky. He's working on the latest edition of "Whiskypedia" and shares some of his thoughts with us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, workers at Jim Beam's two Kentucky distilleries have gone on strike after rejecting two proposed contract offers this past week. We'll also have the details on Chivas Brothers's plans to make Longmorn a luxury single malt, Woodford Reserve's annual Masters Collection release, and a unique tie between London and Texas that's led to a new Bourbon.

WhiskyCast hits the road again, this time to the luxurious New York Yacht Club. Glasgow is sponsoring one of the ships sailing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which reached New York City on Friday, and the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau sponsored a reception to celebate. Glengoyne Distillery's table was the highlight, with a whisky blending competition for guests to try their hand at nosing and blending their own whisky. We'll follow one amateur blender through his turn at the table, and it's a perfect time for us to look at a "conventional wisdom" of the whisky world -- that there are 32 primary aromas the human nose can detect. As Kevin Erskine and Charles MacLean tell us, science has rendered that theory obsolete. In the news, Glasgow's controversial proposal to ban glasses from the city's pubs has been shattered...and we'll have the details on Episode 47 of WhiskyCast!
