In the dark nights of January, celebrating the work of poet Robert Burns by feasting, toasting and speaking poetry has become a much-loved tradition in Scotland and around the world. Sheila Dillon joins Scottish-Malaysian chef Julie Lin in Glasgow as she hosts friends for Burns Night 2024 to share food and ways of celebrating. She also visits the Centre for Robert Burns Studies at the University of Glasgow to hear more about Rabbie Burns himself. Who was he? And where do the Burns' food traditions come from? After hearing Burns' famous 'address to a haggis', we call in on the recently-crowned world's best haggis maker, Simon Broadribb, at his butcher's shop in Southampton, to see his award-winning recipe in action. Time for a wee dram? Finally, we hear from whisky expert and 'Master of the Quaich' Ann Miller on what to drink alongside your Burns supper, and discover Burns' own links with the whisky industry. Presented by Sheila Dillon. Produced by Nina Pullman for BBC Audio in Bristol.

Sam Filmus is the passionate and approachable president of ImpEx Beverages (an Importer of fine spirits from around the world) and JVS Imports (a California Distribution company). He has done what many of us aspire to in life, take a passion for something and turn it into a career. While Sam does handle public relations, product selection, sales and marketing, logistics, and social media you will always find him hard at work, happy to do anything for the success of his staff, his customers, and the consumers who love his products… we have even caught him in the warehouse or behind the wheel of a forklift.Sam received his Whisky Certification from the University of the Highlands and Islands Moray College early on in his career but to him, his true education came from the real world and the things he has learned along the way. He has bestowed the honor of being inducted as a Keeper of the Quaich in 2018, a lifetime achievement well respected by many in the industry. Even with this title, you will find Sam to be both humble and willing to share his knowledge with anyone who will listen. He feels that educating people about the unique story behind each brand and the passion of the people involved in creating these wonderful spirits is more important than anything and loves to share this with those he meets whether at a tasting or just walking down the aisle of a store. He is never too busy to answer a question or strike up a conversation with those he meets.

Episode Description: In this episode of Duchess, Emma Rutland meets the wonderful Sarah Troughton, custodian of one of Scotland's most enchanting stately homes - Blair Castle. In the episode, Sarah reveals how the Dukes of Atholl, who once called Blair their home, inherited the title of Lord of Mann - head of state of the Isle of Man. The Duchess is given the background on the Atholl Highlanders - Europe's last private army, and we're introduced to a former custodian who was not only the first female minister of state, but who also stood against Hitler. Top Quotes: “My greatest ambition with Blair Castle is to keep everything in tact but also to move with the times.” - Sarah Troughton “My advice to future custodians is to enjoy it. Remember to get to know everyone. Be observant, conserve and introduce new ideas.” - Sarah Troughton About the Guest and Stately Home: Sarah Troughton is a half-sister of the late Iain, 10th Duke of Atholl and she is the Head Trustee of the Blair Atholl Estate. Sarah is descended from a long line of incredible women. She was also the 21st Grand Master of the Keepers of the Quaich: an exclusive and international society that recognises those that have shown outstanding commitment to the Scotch Whisky industry. Her husband is the architect Jamie Troughton. Blair Castle is one of Scotland's greatest castles, seated in the Highlands of Scotland near the village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire. It is the ancestral home of the Murray Clan, and was historically the seat of their chieftain, the Duke of Atholl. The castle is a category A listed building, and the grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens. Blair is also the home to the Atholl Highlanders which is the only remaining private army in Europe, and act as the personal bodyguard to the Dukes of Atholl. About the Host: Emma Rutland, The Duchess of Rutland, did not always stride the halls of stately homes. Born Emma Watkins, the Duchess grew up the daughter of a Quaker farmer, in the Welsh marsh countryside. She trained as an opera singer in the Guildhall School of Music, and worked as a successful interior designer before meeting her future husband David Manners, the 11th Duke of Rutland, at a dinner party. Their marriage in 1992 would transform Emma Watkins into the 11th Duchess of Rutland, thrusting her into the world of aristocracy, and handing her the responsibility of one of the nation's great treasures: Belvoir Castle. While simultaneously running the day to day operations of the castle, and raising five children, The Duchess became fascinated with the history and importance of the other stately homes of the UK. Join The Duchess as she embarks on a wonderful journey through time, to learn more about the incredible homes that have defined Great Britain and, most importantly, meet the other extraordinary women who work tirelessly behind their doors to preserve their history and magic for future generations. We very much look forward to our chat with Nick, a writer, strategic thinker, scholar and sceptic. With over thirty years in the whiskey sector, he recently published the must-read for whisky lovers, Everything You Need To Know About Whisky (But Are Too Afraid To Ask).Having taught Scottish History at the University of Glasgow he joined United Distillers (now Diageo) in 1990 to create what has become the world's most comprehensive spirits archive, before moving on to direct Diageo's global malt whisky marketing team. He retired from Diageo in December 2020 following the publication of his acclaimed book, A Long Stride, the Story of the World's No 1 Scotch Whisky, written as part of the bicentennial celebrations of John Walker & Sons.Nick has been recognised with the IWSC trophy for Outstanding Achievement in the Scotch Whisky Industry (2017) and inducted into the Whisky Hall of Fame (2018). He is a Master of the Quaich. He has served as a Trustee of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust since 2017. In 2021 he was appointed Honorary Fellow in the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London.
Whisky writer Dr Nicholas Morgan is a 30-year veteran of spirits giant Diageo, with a background in history and academia. He joined Diageo's predecessor, United Distillers, in 1990, creating what is now considered the world's most comprehensive spirits archive, before making a somewhat unlikely transition to leader of Diageo's global malt whisky marketing team.Nicholas retired from Diageo in December 2020 following the publication of his acclaimed book, A Long Stride, the Story of the World's No 1 Scotch Whisky, written as part of the bicentennial celebrations of John Walker & Sons. His latest book is Everything You Need to Know About Whisky (But are too afraid to ask). It's a great read, and we discuss both it and the Johnnie Walker book later on in this interview with Nicholas, who is a Master of the Quaich – that's one of the highest honours in Scotch whisky – and a member of the Whisky Magazine Hall Of Fame. But I started by asking Nick about the challenges he faced marketing single malt whisky at Diageo in the 1990s.
The 2 Gordons celebrate the return of live whisky shows! Gordon Dallas samples 6 Isles Blended Malt while the chat ranges from the recent inductees to The Keepers of The Quaich to sustainability in the whisky industry in light of Cop26 via aged Blends. It's Gordons doubled just like your whisky should be! Slainte!
This week we joining legendary whisky writer, Charles Maclean for a special two part edition. Coined as Scotland's leading whisky expert, Charles holds many accolades including Keeper of The Quaich and an MBE. In this first part we discuss how his career began, the relationship between whisky and writing, and his favourite dram (he tastes over 1000 a year).
I can't tell you how many times I've heard this blanket statement from bourbon drinkers - "I don't like scotch." Like scotch is just one flavor profile. That's why I wanted to have a little Scotch 101 discussion, talking about regions, peat smoke vs fruity, age, proof, and what scotch to start with, with my guest Ed Kohl, a scotch whisky distributor who has spent a couple decades helping Americans understand scotch. We'll also talk about the whisky tariffs, three tier system, and some of the whiskies he distributes like Clan MacLeod, Spey, and Smokehead.
In more than 40 years of writing about whisky, Charles Maclean has achieved global recognition and no shortage of accolades for his work. He's a Master of the Quaich – the highest honour in the Scotch whisky industry – and a member of the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. In fact, he was also its founding editor.Charles has written 18 books and counting on whisky. His magnum opus, Malt Whisky, was first published in 1997.It's been translated into nine languages and was the recipient of a prestigious Glenfiddich award, and his 2003 book Scotch Whisky: A Liquid History won the James Beard Award for ‘Best Wine and Spirits Book.'And in June 2021 his services to Scotch whisky were further recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.Charles was appointed as an MBE – a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. So, stay with me this episode as Charles and I discuss some of his career highlights, his love/hate relationship with writing, and what it's like to taste ultra-aged whiskies retailing at more than $100,000 a bottle. He shares his insights on the age-old debate of blends vs single malts, the resurrection of the legendary Brora and Port Ellen Scotch whisky distilleries, and his opinion on Tasmanian whisky, after visiting in 2019.

Die Keepers of the Quaich.

Hello everyone, and welcome back for Season 5 of Lush Life. We begin this season with an author, a speaker, a liveryman at the Worshipful Company of Distillers, Keeper of the Quaich, and, most of all, a champion of whisky. I’m Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is, Lush Life Podcast, every week; we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time. Eddie Ludlow is all of those things I described and more. He founded The Whisky Lounge (https://thewhiskylounge.com/), which has been introducing whisky to the world for over 10 years, and has just published “Whisky - A Tasting Course.” Whether you are a beginner to whisky or a pro, there is no way you can’t learn something from his book. Everything about it makes you want to pick up that bottle and serve yourself a dram right now. Unfortunately, due to recent circumstances, the Whisky Lounge has had to cancel their in real life tastings, but that hasn’t stopped them from planning a virtual festival, their Whisky Festival in a Box (https://thewhiskylounge.com/whisky-festival-in-a-box/) from October 16 - 18. Eddie will tell you all about how to sign up later on in the show. Drams ready! Let’s go. Our Cocktail of the week is the classic Old Fashioned INGREDIENTS 50 ml Bourbon 2 barspoons Demerara Sugar Syrup 2 dashes Angostura Bitters 1 big ice cube METHOD Add 50ml of Bourbon to a rocks glass with one big cube of ice Add two barspoons of demerara sugar syrup Then add two dashes of Angostura bitters Stir for 50 seconds -- You’ll find this recipe, more variations on the Old Fashioned, plus all the cocktails of the week, at alushlifemanual.com (https://alushlifemanual.com/), where you’ll find all the ingredients in the shop Full Episode Details: https://alushlifemanual.com/how-to-taste-whisky ----- Become a supporter of A Lush Life Manual for as little as $5 - all you have to do is go to buymeacoffee.com/lushlife (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lushlife). Master of the Quaich and entry to the Whisky Hall of Fame is bestowed upon only the best of the best and Charles Maclean fits that category. With 18 books under his belt, founding member of the Whisky magazine, Whisky correspondent for Scottish Field and host of a Whisky TV channel, it was a delight to interview this true whisky connoisseur who did not hold back during our discussion. As a prelude to the interview, I look at different whiskies around the world and also the whisky regions of Scotland that Charles comments upon later. But the gem of the Podcast is the full and frank discussion on the whisky industry today and Charles' take on where the industry is heading.

Very happy to have Joshua Hatton as my guest. Joshua is the co-owner of Single Cask Nation, an Independent Bottler of fine spirits; a member of the Keepers of the Quaich; and.... a Jew! So that gives us an opportunity to talk about what that means in White Christian America: how anti-Semitism got its start (believe it or not, it started with the Semites) and why it still persists as the hidden evil that undermines cultures worldwide . And also, he picks out a hidden beauty from my shelf...its Scotch, but not the kind you're thinking of. Leave it to him...

This week's podcast comes from the historic Quaich Bar, located in the heart of Speyside in the infamous Craigellachie Hotel. We join head bartender, Angus Bryce McVay, who gives us an insight into the bar's history, what makes it legendary, and...if the perfect dram exists.
Richard Carleton Hacker is an author, and one of the world's foremost experts on cigars, wine and spirits. He has written 11 books, as well as countless columns for Robb Report, Playboy Magazine, Ritz-Carlton Magazine and more, and is credited with helping to ignite the cigar boom of the 1990s. Since he smoked his first 'proper' cigar in the mid-1960s, Richard has been researching and writing about them, their place in society, as well as the countries and people producing them. That research first culminated in the most-popular of his 11 titles, The Ultimate Cigar Book, which continues to fly off the shelves and has just been released as a fourth edition. Not only is Richard a preeminent authority on cigars - he's also well versed in spirits of all types, wine and "anything over 40 per cent!" He's been a judge on many a global spirits competition, has been inducted by the Scotch industry as a Keeper of the Quaich, and was even knighted in Germany. He is absolutely brilliant, and full of knowledge you simply won't find anywhere else.
"The Keepers of the Quaich is an exclusive and international society that recognizes those that have shown outstanding commitment to the Scotch Whisky industry. Founded by the leading distillers, it is by its very nature, the beating heart of the industry. In establishing the Keepers of the Quaich, the industry pooled its influential resources to build a powerful society working together and united." Our very own Joshua has been made a Keeper of the Quaich (and likes to don his Kippah of the Quaich)! Listen in as Joshua and Jason recount the night and banquet where Joshua was made a "Keeper." So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! In the early days, Raymond Davidson ordered his whisky in a wine glass when drinking at the bar. Already being in the crystal business, he had enough of this, and created what we now know as the iconic Glencairn Glass. It wasn't until his son Paul found the glass, that this was turned into a product primarily intended for whisky trades-people. While when originally released (back in 2001), it was intended for trades people, it's the glass many consumers use to enjoy their whisky. Raymond Davidson joins us on the podcast. We speak about the Keepers of the Quaich, the importance of glassware, and how to win your very own Glencairn with the whisky.buzz logo! Japan's Hombo Shizu has been making whiskies off and on since 1949, and the company's whisky heritage claims a critical link to Masataka Taketsuru, the "father of Japanese whisky." Jim's annual guide to the world's whiskies generates controversy every year, and he'll answer his critics and discuss his choices for the year's best new whiskies in this episode. In the news, new releases from The Dalmore, Glengoyne and The Glenrothes...Buffalo Trace releases more experimental bourbons, results of the International Wine & Spirits Competitions whisky awards, and Charles Maclean becomes a Master of the Quaich.
Sweden is a nation of whisky lovers, with more than 200 whisky clubs. In fact, three of the year's best whisky books have been produced by Swedish whisky lovers. We'll hear from Ingvar Ronde, the editor of the 2007 Malt Whisky Yearbook, which is being published this week. We'll also talk with Ulf Buxrud, Keeper of the Quaich, Malt Maniac, and author of the upcoming book "Rare Malts" on the 36 distilleries that make up the Rare Malts series. In the news, William Grant and Sons takes control of its UK distribution rights, Duncan Taylor and Co. puts some rare single malts on the auction block, the US chapter of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society goes on the road, and Malt Advocate Editor and Publisher John Hansell gives us a preview of the fall issue.
