Fah Mai Holdings Group Inc UK head Jacob Carter talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the state of the whisky industry in 2024 and expectations for 2025. Carter highlighted both the challenges and opportunities the sector has faced. He noted significant declines in Scotch whisky exports, with volumes falling by 10.20% during the first half of 2024 due to global economic pressures, inflation, and tariffs. Auction values also saw steep declines, with a 50% drop in fine and rare whisky prices year-over-year in Q2. Additionally, the luxury segment has been under pressure, especially for high-end bottles aged over 50 years. Despite these challenges, Carter pointed out areas of growth, such as increased demand in emerging markets like India (up 17.30%) and Japan (up 13%). Resilient brands like Glenfarclas and Port Ellen have shown modest gains, and iconic labels like Macallan continue to hold their position despite market volatility. Looking ahead to 2025, Carter predicts sustained demand for rare whiskys, further diversification across whisky brands globally, and the rise of digital platforms leveraging blockchain and NFTs for authentication. To new investors in 2025, Carter advised starting with research and understanding market trends, setting clear budgets, diversifying portfolios, and consulting industry experts. With many parts of Scotland finally getting harvest underway, and planting for 2025 harvest being undertaken, NFU Scotland is asking growers to now complete its 31st consecutive annual harvest survey. Mark meets with Scott Campbell, North East representative on the NFUS Crops Committee, to chat about how the harvest has been so far and what the implications are further down the line.Helen Needham meets Gretchen Daily of the Natural Capital Project at Stanford University.A special festival gets underway this weekend in the north east giving people the chance to go “behind the scenes” with a number of food and drink producers. One of the businesses taking part is the Tullynessle Deer Farm near Alford which is offering guided tours to visitors. Rachel speaks to Janet and Willie Keith say it's a challenging time for the farmed deer industry in Scotland which is why they want more people to at least consider giving venison a try.Mark meets with Harold Hastie at the harbour in Port Ellen to discuss the many shipwrecks around Islay's coastline.Over the past couple of years, Mark has been following the story of the Ash Rise project, a collaborative project between the Scottish Furniture Makers Association, Scottish Forestry and the Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers to highlight the effect of ash dieback on Scotland. It has now reached the point where the diseased trees Mark witnessed being felled in 2022 have been turned into an array of exquisite objects as part of an exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. He went along to have a look and met up with Tom Addy, Furniture Maker and Director of Ash Rise who pointed out a rather wonderful creation.Recently, Rachel visited the Tarland Bee Group in Aberdeenshire to hear what the season has been like for them and to find out a bit more about how they entice younger people to take an interest. After getting kitted out in a bee suit, she joined Yvonne Davidson and her young helper Imogen as they prepared to smoke the bees prior to entering the hives. The new ImMerse festival takes place on the 22nd of September at Annan Harbour and in the surrounding merse (saltmarshes) and river. It will be a fun-filled chance to discover and celebrate the amazing saltmarshes – and the wider natural environment – across the south of Scotland focusing particularly on the Solway. Jan Hogarth from SCAMP (Solway Coastal and Marine Project) joins Mark and Rachel live to tell us more about the festival and how listeners can get involved.
Diese Folge handelt von Donnerstag dem 7. September 2017.
Send us a Text Message.PeatPeat is not just mossIts compressed vegetable remains from peat boggsAll peat for whisky comes from 5 boggsThere is a difference in flavor from each bogg but that hasnt been played with much yetRoughly 1MM of new peat is added each year, but scotch takes les than that, so peat is being added yearly even with how much we useWhen cutting peat, you toss the top where the grass is, then you have 3 cuts down. The top cut is used for whiskey (dampest and least compressed, so makes lots of smoke. Young Laphroaig gives the typical peat punch of the island, whereas mature malts from Caol Ila, Bowmore, and Ardbeg distillery provide smoothness and body. The cherry on top is a little dash of the extremely rare Port Ellen distillery adding a great deal of complexity. Islay Whisky at its best! This is a blended malt from vom Fass. It's based on about 80% young Laphroaig according to the guy at the store (I have come to take what guys at stores say about whisky with a pinch of salt) and the rest is mature Caol Ila, Ardbeg, Bowmore and a hint of Port Ellen (likely a teaspoon per cask just to make it fancy).VomFass is german for “From the cask”. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ewan Morgan, Head of Whiskey Outreach and National Luxury Ambassador for Diageo who owns some of the largest liquor brands in the world, from Tanqueray & Casamigos, to Guiness and Non-Alcoholic brand Seedlip. But what most may not know, is that Diageo also owns a fair share of high end labels too, like Lagavulin and Mortlach. And after four decades of closure, the iconic Port Ellen distillery in the Island of Islay is reopening with Diageo in a historic moment for the Scotch industry. Ewan and I chat about the Scotch Whiskey collecting market, growing up in a family who lives and breathes the spirit, and he even takes me through a tasting of the new Port Ellen Gemini release, retailing for fifty thousand dollars. And to top it all off, we recorded at an amazing ten million dollar apartment on One Wall Street thanks to our friends at Optimist. Ewan is truly an expert which is why he's worked his way up to have what most would consider one of the greatest jobs in the world. So without further adieu, this is Ewan Morgan, for Collectors Gene Radio.Diageo - https://www.diageo.com/One Wall Street - https://onewallstreet.com/Optimist - https://www.optimistconsulting.com/Ewan Morgan - https://www.instagram.com/ewanmorgan/?hl=enPort Ellen - https://www.diageo.com/en/news-and-media/stories/2024/port-ellen-reborn-the-reopening-of-islay-s-legendary-ghost-distillery
Have you ever wondered how tradition and modern science blend to create the perfect whisky? In this captivating episode of Innovation Storytellers Show, host Susan Lindner sits down with Aimée Morrison, Diageo's Master Blender, to explore the fascinating intersection of history, innovation, and cutting-edge technology in the Scotch whisky industry. Aimée shares her inspiring journey from falling in love with whisky and analytical science during her university days to becoming a key figure at Diageo. She discusses the groundbreaking Smoke DNAi project, which leverages custom algorithms to interpret complex data from the whisky maturation process, opening up a realm of possibilities for creating new flavor profiles. Focusing on the reopening of the Port Ellen distillery, Aimée highlights how Diageo is pushing the boundaries of experimentation, blending tradition with technology to ensure the quality and innovation of its whiskies. She passionately explains, "This is just the beginning for us at Portel. From the new make to the mature, the opportunities for experimentation are endless, and I'm thrilled to be part of this journey." In this episode, you'll also discover the potential of digital twins in various fields and how Diageo uses these innovations to complement the art of whisky blending. Aimée emphasizes, "At the end of the day, a human nose is our greatest tool. While digital techniques like gas chromatography enhance our understanding, they can't replicate the sensitivity and descriptive analysis a human can provide." Join us to explore the exciting future of whisky and the incredible potential of Smoke DNAi, and learn how to taste whisky from a master herself best. Aimée's journey and insights offer a unique perspective on the seamless blend of tradition and science driving whisky innovation.

In Scotland in the 1980s, a slump in the whisky market brought about the closure of some of the country's most iconic distilleries. These sites become known as 'ghost' distilleries - where spirit production has stopped, but where some stock is still available. In this programme, Elizabeth Hotson will be discovering why some of these distilleries are now being brought back to life. She visits the legendary Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay for its much-anticipated re-opening and hears from the master blender there, and she takes a tour of London's fabled Vintage House. A whisky writer explains what makes a truly great dram and we learn why investors need to be careful if they're planning to jump on the whisky bandwagon.(Picture: A bottle of Port Ellen whisky bottled in 1980. Whiskys:Lagavulin 8Lagavulin 16
For 41 years, the Port Ellen Distillery on Scotland's Isle of Islay sat silent. Last month, a multi-million dollar restoration of the distillery was completed when the first spirit flowed at Port Ellen since 1983. While it'll be years before we see new bottlings of Port Ellen, the distillery will be open to Islay visitors from around the world. Diageo's Ewan Gunn was on hand when that first spirit flowed. He's been part of the revival since it was announced in 2017, and joins us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, The Demeter Collection auction raised £49,000 for the Our Whisky Foundation, while William Grant & Sons is expanding its Blended Scotch portfolio with a new range of whiskies.
Here is the smoky bits if your ready for it. Islay is the last region we are diving into, the best maybe, my favorite possibly. Known as "The Queen of the Hebrides",[8] it lies in Argyll just south west of Jura and around 40 kilometres (22 nautical miles) north of the Northern Irish coast. The is land's capital is Bowmore where the distinctive round Kilarrow Parish Church and a distillery are located.[9] Port Ellen is the main port.[10] Islay is the fifth-largest Scottish island and the eighth-largest island of the British Isles, with a total area of almost 620 square kilometres (240 sq mi).[Note 1] There is ample evidence of the prehistoric settlement of Islay and the first written reference may have come in the first century AD. The island had become part of the Gaelic Kingdom of Dál Riata during the Early Middle Ages before being absorbed into the Norse Kingdom of the Isles. The later medieval period marked a "cultural high point" with the transfer of the Hebrides to the Kingdom of Scotland and the emergence of the Clan Donald Lordship of the Isles, originally centred at Finlaggan.[13] During the 17th century the power of Clan Donald waned, but improvements to agriculture and transport led to a rising population, which peaked in the mid-19th century.[3] This was followed by substantial forced displacements and declining resident numbers. Today, Islay has over 3,000 inhabitants, and the main commercial activities are agriculture, malt whisky distillation and tourism. The island has a long history of religious observance, and Scottish Gaelic is spoken by about a quarter of the population.[14] Its landscapes have been celebrated through various art forms, and there is a growing interest in renewable energy in the form of wave power. Islay is home to many bird species such as the wintering populations of Greenland white-fronted and barnacle goose, and is a popular destination throughout the year for birdwatchers. The climate is mild and ameliorated by the Gulf Stream. The region is characterised by whiskies with a peat smoke aroma, such as Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. In total, there are nine active distilleries on this island which measures only 25 by 15 miles (40 by 24 kilometres), and the industry is Islay's second largest employer after agriculture.Islay is a centre of "whisky tourism", and hosts a "Festival of Malt and Music" known as Fèis Ìle each year on the last week of May, with events and tastings celebrating the cultural heritage of the island.

Port Ellen, a distillery in Scotland, is leveraging AI technology known as SmokeDNAi to produce limited edition whisky. The distillery has introduced two rare bottles called Port Ellen Gemini, each priced at $50,000. SmokeDNAi allows the distillery to delve into and understand the aging process of whisky in casks. The parent company, Diageo, has allocated $44 million from a $230 million investment into whisky tourism projects to further explore whisky maturation using SmokeDNAi. This AI technology is used to analyze flavor profiles and mouthfeel of whisky distilled in different casks, aiming to enhance understanding of aging and control over flavors. The reopening of Port Ellen distillery after 40 years has marked the introduction of SmokeDNAi, contributing to maximizing production, flavor, and sales of whisky. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message

Feis Ile - The Islay Festival The first ever Islay Festival was held in 1986 in an effort to encourage more tourism to the Island. Its original schedule included just one whiskey tasting but since then Islay's distilleries have become the festival's focal point attracting thousands of Whiskey lovers to the Island each year. As well as the many Distillery open days, the 9 day Feis Ile programme includes activities such as ceilidhs, Scots language lessons, and Folk Nights. Loch Gruinart, The Oa Reserve Loch Gruinart and the Oa Nature Reserve are two of the top wildlife sites in Scotland and are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SISS).
The list of modern-day-legendary distillery managers is not a very long one and is only made complete by the inclusion of the inimitable Georgie Crawford. Former Distillery Manager of both Lagavulin and Port Ellen distilleries, George has recently joined the Elixir Distillers team as the distillery manager of their new Islay distillery which just recently broke ground. Stop everything you're doing and listen in. You'll not regret it! So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! ISLAY! Är det rökigt? Jajamensan! Här boken som David nämnde: Jefford, Andrew, Peat smoke and spirit: A portrait of Islay and its whiskies (2004; London: headline, 2005). Kolla bara här: https://ardnahoedistillery.com/ Veckans ord: pannfyllningsgrad Här hittar vi inga exakta litteraturreferenser faktiskt, men några saker att läsa av relevans: Harrison, Barry, Olivier Fagnen, Frances Jack & James Brosnan, ”The impact of copper in different parts of malt whisky pot stills on new make spirit composition and aroma”, Journal of the Institute of Brewing 117 (2011), nr 1, s. 106–112. Reaich, Donna, ”The influence of copper on malt whisky character”, i Iain Campbell, red., Proceedings of the Fifth Aviemore conference on malting, brewing and distilling (London: Institute of Brewing, 1999), s. 141–152. In more than 40 years of writing about whisky, Charles Maclean has achieved global recognition and no shortage of accolades for his work. He's a Master of the Quaich – the highest honour in the Scotch whisky industry – and a member of the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. In fact, he was also its founding editor.Charles has written 18 books and counting on whisky. His magnum opus, Malt Whisky, was first published in 1997.It's been translated into nine languages and was the recipient of a prestigious Glenfiddich award, and his 2003 book Scotch Whisky: A Liquid History won the James Beard Award for ‘Best Wine and Spirits Book.'And in June 2021 his services to Scotch whisky were further recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.Charles was appointed as an MBE – a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. So, stay with me this episode as Charles and I discuss some of his career highlights, his love/hate relationship with writing, and what it's like to taste ultra-aged whiskies retailing at more than $100,000 a bottle. He shares his insights on the age-old debate of blends vs single malts, the resurrection of the legendary Brora and Port Ellen Scotch whisky distilleries, and his opinion on Tasmanian whisky, after visiting in 2019.
We couldn't have picked two better guests with the recent news that Port Ellen, Brora, and Rosebank are set to reopen. Dr. Whisky and Boutique-y Dave are joined by none other than the legendary Colin Dunn of Diageo, and Gordon Dundas of Ian Mcleod Distillers. Past and future collide as the futures of these once lost distilleries are set to be rewritten, alongside Hunter S Thompson's Fear and Loathing, courtesy of Colin Dunn.

Scotland's legendary whisky island is getting yet another new distillery. Local officials have approved the plans for the new Elixir Distillers project just east of Port Ellen, making it the third new distillery to be built on Islay in the last five years and the 11th overall. Elixir Distillers co-founder Sukhinder Singh has been trying to get the project past the planning stage for nearly three years, and gives us his first interview on the distillery in this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. We'll also have reaction from one of the Islay groups that fought against the distillery over its potential impact on the island. In the news, an Australian distiller is in critical condition following a fire at a Tasmanian distillery this past week. We'll also have the latest Scotch Whisky export data that shows a really rough year for the industry with a double whammy from the Covid-19 pandemic and U.S. import tariffs, the week's new whiskies, and why the cocktail of choice for some distillers might just be an "enzyme cocktail."

Born in 2014 this wonderfully complex dram was released to help fund a new community center in Port Ellen. Having a delightful nose this dram gives way to such a delightful palate and slow, warm finish. I was happy Ardbeg still had some of these in the gift shop when we visited back in 2017.
What's it like to build a new distillery on Islay? Port Ellen vs. Bowmore - How did Jim McEwan and Stewart Laing get to know each other and what does football have to do with it? In how far are Scott and Andrew Laing - the next generation - involved in the family business and what does roasted meat have to do with their relationship to whisky?

This episode Karin sits down with The Lord Robertson of Port Ellen. A Labour politician who was both the 10th Secretary General of NATO and the Secretary of State for Defence.
Construction could begin later this year on Diageo's planned revival of the legendary Port Ellen Distillery on Islay, which was closed in 1983. Only the seaside warehouses and the old kiln building are left, and they'll play a key role in the distillery's future when it opens in 2021 - assuming local officials sign off on planning approval for the project. That application was submitted in mid-May, with a decision expected later this summer. Islay native and former Lagavulin manager Georgie Crawford is the project manager for the Port Ellen revival, and she'll join us on WhiskyCast In-Depth to explain the plans - and how the team tapped into the memories of former Port Ellen workers to help shape those plans. In the news, climate change could be playing a major role in Scotch Whisky's immediate future as distillers and barley farmers deal with the after-effects of last summer's drought. Another dispute between the Trump Administration and Mexico could see tariffs slapped back on American whiskies just days after they were removed, and could North Korea actually be getting into the whisky business?
Edrington first announced plans for The Macallan's new distillery in 2012, but the planning process on what may be one of the longest distillery projects on record started well before that, and construction work alone took three and a half years. The Macallan's new home welcomed its first guests the other night, and will open for tours on June 2. We'll talk with The Macallan's Ken Grier about the new distillery and what it means for the brand's future, along with the recent move to revamp The Macallan's core ranges and last week's pair of million-dollar bids for two rare 1926 Macallans at Bonhams in Hong Kong. In the news, Diageo has named project managers for the revival of its Port Ellen and Brora distilleries. There's a report that U.S. trade officials are pressuring Great Britain to weaken protections for Scotch Whisky in a post-Brexit free trade deal, while Gordon & MacPhail has unveiled another new range of single malts and Irish Distillers is adding two new whiskies to its Method and Madness lineup.
Christmas came a couple of months early for some Scotch Whisky lovers with word that the iconic Port Ellen, Brora, and Rosebank distilleries will be reopened over the next couple of years. Diageo will invest $46 million to bring Port Ellen and Brora back to life, while Ian Macleod Distillers has acquired not only the old Rosebank site, but the rights to the Rosebank name and its remaining whisky inventory. We'll talk with Diageo's Dr. Nick Morgan and Gordon Doctor of Ian Macleod about the work that's ahead before the spirit starts flowing from the stills. Scott Watson of The Lost Distillery Company has been reviving historic distillery legacies in Scotland for the last decade, with extensive research to recreate the whiskies those long-lost distilleries might be making today, and he'll share some of that process with us as well. In the news, Heaven Hill completes a massive $25 million expansion at its Bernheim Distillery, while a Sonoma County craft distiller has managed to dodge the Northern California wildfires so far. We'll also have the week's tasting notes and some of your ideas on which heritage distillery should be revived next.
(Yes we know this episode is super late. We've had some production issues. Soz bbz) It's the fifth day of our Islay adventure and we finally make it to the island! We start off super early at Loch Lomond before getting the ferry from Kennacraig to Port Ellen, pitching a tent at Kintra Farm amid miserable Hebridean summer weather and finally (FINALLY!) finding our square foot of land among Laphroaig's fields of peat. In an alternate reality somewhere, the naughtiest thing Theresa May has ever done is run through fields of peat. There's also a song all about a very unique tourist phenomenon on Islay, and of course some bloody good car chat. Written and presented by Josh White and Josh Aronsen. Recorded on location and produced at Park Town Studios in London.
The days when each Scotch Whisky distillery malted its own barley are long gone, and only a few distilleries still have malting floors. Now, most distilleries get their malt from one of the 11 commercial maltings in Scotland, and we’ll go inside Diageo’s Port Ellen Maltings on Islay for a look at the process of malting barley - one of the first steps in making whisky.

Distillery managers come and go at Lagavulin, but Iain McArthur is a fixture at the legendary Islay distillery. McArthur's something of a legend himself after 44 years as the warehouseman at Lagavulin and previously at Port Ellen, and the native Ileach followed his father and grandfather into the whisky business. We'll go peat cutting with Iain at his family's bog and sit down with him for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. Back in August, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive David Frost told us it would take "a pretty good offer" to lure him back into government service. The offer came, and Frost's sudden resignation to become a special adviser to British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson tops our news this week. We'll also have details on Rémy Cointreau's latest move in the whisky business, Templeton Rye's commitment to distilling in Iowa, and a "write-in" ticket that could bring unity to this year's US presidential race.
