Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host Brian Weinstein. We are at the halfway point of the tour by now, having just visited the Schottenstein Center in Columbus for the first time, it is now time to visit an old favorite: The North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, South Carolina for a THREE NIGHT weekend run! A city brimming with both American history and Phish history, we are lucky enough today to be joined by Charleston native Dave Scozarro who tells us about both: places to see, things to do, and highlights from Phish's 35 years playing The Holy City. In a sense, you can track Phish's entire career arc by keeping track of the venues they've played in Charleston since 1990. From small clubs, to larger clubs, to small theaters, and finally, the N. Charleston Coliseum. They moved in in 1995 and never left. Sure, they played two shows at the local tennis stadium a few years ago, and Dave explains why it may not be such a great idea for the Phish crowd for them to continue there. But there's so much to love about both Charleston and the coliseum. World-class food in the city, general admission seating in the venue, and almost four decades of music to dig into. Let's join Dave as he prepares us for July 11, 12, and 13 in Charleston.

A WVU fashion program digs into garment origin by partnering with agriculture…discover Almost Heaven at Plum Orchard Lake in the fall…and former NFL star and acclaimed motivational speaker Rocky Bleier will be the keynote speaker at the Governor's Energy Summit next week…on today's daily304. #1 – From YNST – While most fashion programs focus on garment construction using mass-produced synthetic blends, WVU's fashion program has sown new seeds for the industry, including the newly-forged Farm to Fashion class.  This years-in-the-making curriculum is revolutionizing the way student designers understand the industry by partnering with the university's agriculture program so they can learn about the origin of fiber and the laborious processes involved in creating textiles, Working in tandem with existing textiles and sustainability courses, students are leaving the program with a regenerative, ecosystemic lens adept for ‘slow fashion' — a distinctly different point of view than many of their peers across the globe. Recent graduate Chelsea LaReina Hidalgo is one such designer. Check out the interview in YNST Magazine where she talks about her senior collection and how she made her three looks using fully biodegradable textiles, natural dyes and recycled wool.  Read more: https://ynstmagazine.com/look/sustainable-roots-how-wvus-fashion-program-is-sowing-couture-from-farm-to-fashion/   #2 – From MSN – Tucked into the hills of Fayette County, Plum Orchard Lake is the definition of Almost Heaven. The Charleston CVB prepares for its next big sporting event, the USA Karate All American Classic…construction on two Southern West Virginia travel plazas is expected to be complete just in time for Christmas…and discover history, outdoor recreation and more in the Hatfield-McCoy Mountains region…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – After a series of successful spring and summer events, the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau is now ready to carry that momentum into the fall–with the focus particularly being on more of the growing sports tourism industry. Charleston CVB President and CEO Tim Brady said they are excited about a new event in October -- the USA Karate All American Classic. The event takes place at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center Oct. 25-27. It's projected to bring in around 800 youth athletes coming to compete for national karate titles. That's coming on the success of the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships, which Charleston hosted in May. USA Cycling signed a 5-year contract for the event to be held in Charleston. Brady said they are confident about banking on sports tourism being a success in the area based on what it has already generated. “Sports will just continue to grow in the United States and we're just finding new ways and working hard to continue to tap into that here in the city,” he said. He said those facilities, which have been under construction since late 2022 to early 2023, are set to open by Dec. 15. The reconstruction is intended to give them a modernized look while also paying tribute to the original “glass houses” look of the facilities from the 1950s and 60s. Both of the plazas will come complete with restaurants such as Wendy's, Starbucks, Popeyes, and a 24-hour convenience store, Mountain State Market, as well as outdoor dining opportunities. The facility will also include 50 additional parking spaces for tractor trailers and EV charging stations.  Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2024/09/02/newly-updated-west-virginia-travel-plazas-to-open-by-the-end-of-the-year/   #3 – From WV TOURISM –  The Hatfield-McCoy Mountains region is rooted in history and has the perfect blend of adventures. With its dimpled sides and double spouts, the bottle is one of the most recognizable and desirable pieces of handblown glassware on the market. Blenko artisans continue to produce the bottles the old-fashioned way: placing globs of molten glass in iron molds, hand blowing the glass to fit the molds then using a tool called the Clapper to hold the flat-bottom bottles as workers trim away the excess glass and reheat the top portion to carefully shape the spouts. Like a lot of tools at Blenko's Milton factory, the Clapper is an improvised device invented out of necessity through what company officials jovially refer to as our “redneck engineering.” That's when history merges with modern engineering. Blenko recently partnered with the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center to re-engineer the Clapper, working with MAMC Design Engineer Morgan Smith to tweak the design and create computer-aided files to manufacture the device. Junefest WV is a unique opportunity for vendors to display their talents and passions and connect with the community. Learn more: https://www.junefest-wv.com/   #2 – From WV EXECUTIVE – Much of West Virginia's charm lies in its rural communities, where thousands of hardworking and dedicated citizens reside. Despite this, many of those areas are struggling with economic hardships and limited access to essential resources. Glenville State University, the West Virginia Community Development Hub and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development have all joined together to support these communities and foster growth through the Rural Partners Network (RPN). The RPN was launched by the USDA in 2022 and consists of two community networks within West Virginia: Southern West Virginia Community Network and the West Virginia Pioneer Community Network. These networks are supported by USDA Rural Development local staff. In its first year in West Virginia, the RPN has made significant strides in creating positive change within rural communities. Initially, its focus was on community engagement over monetary gain; however, the RPN's efforts across the 20 counties have resulted in nearly half of the engagements leading to new connections and partnerships. Four baseball and softball fields, a playground and a disc golf course make up the newest phase of the Hurricane Bridge Park. Sixty teams played on the fields at the complex and at Valley park, bringing with them a lot of people and money. “People buying fuel from here. People shopping locally here, whether it's on Main Street or in Teays Valley,” Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said. “The two or three nights at the hotels. The hotel, motel tax, that's a big impact on Hurricane and it keeps local businesses in business.” Edwards said there are eight more tournaments booked at the complex this year. Energy officials say people are receiving calls from scammers claiming to represent the “West Virginia Power Company” or other, legitimate power companies that operate in West Virginia. The callers offer to perform free in-home services, funded through federal grants, to make households more energy efficient. Scammers then ask for personal information, including the victim's full name and home address, which can be used to commit identity theft and other crimes. “If the caller cannot provide their company's West Virginia business license and details about the grant funding the project, it is likely a scam,” says Nicholas Preservati, director of the Office of Energy. “You should never give out personal information over the phone without first making sure the call is legitimate.” Read more: https://westvirginia.gov/office-of-energy-warns-about-new-phone-scam-targeting-homeowners/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Nucor Steel looks to women and recovery program graduates to help fill 800 job openings. A new disc golf course transforms an old flood plain in Ceredo. And the Charleston Coliseum and Convention center sets new venue records--#YesWV!...on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Nucor Steel West Virginia Vice President and General Manager John Farris says he has no doubt the large steelmaker will be able to fill the 800 permanent jobs that will be created with the completion of the $3 billion sheet steel plant to be under construction soon in Mason County. Farris said one of the goals is to target more women for employment. “We're currently putting together an RFQ (Request for Qualifications) to have on-site child care,” Farris said on MetroNews “Talkline.” “At the premise of that is we want to encourage more women to choose steelmaking as a career and obviously that's (on-site child care) going to appeal to families at large.” Farris said Nucor has also been engaged with the state's Jobs and Hope program that helps those coming out of substance use disorder get jobs along with ongoing talks with Marshall Addictive Medicine for second chance employment. Jobs will be posted on Nucor's website, www.nucor.com/westvirginia. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/25/nucor-employment-goals-include-hiring-more-women-and-working-with-recovery-programs/   #2 – From WCHS-TV –  A new outdoor recreation option is now available in Wayne County thanks to a major land reclamation project in the form of an 18-hole disc golf course. The new track – located at 1597 B Street – is an anomaly in the Mountain State as the landscape is relatively flat, but heavily wooded fairways and sheer length provide ample challenge for advanced disc golfers. The Wayside Disc Golf Course was designed by West Virginia Disc Golf Hall of Famers Johnny Sias and Phil Bryant. The land remained unused for years as part of a flood plain of the Ohio River, but local officials and volunteers saw value in the property. Ceredo Mayor Paul Billups expects the course to make an economic impact as players stop at restaurants, gas stations and area businesses. He said Ceredo's newest addition also pairs well with the town's ballfield and pickleball courts, giving residents and visitors another option for recreation and physical activity. Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin joined the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center Board to make the announcement. Earlier this month the complex hosted three sold-out shows and one at 90 percent capacity in the span of one week, resulting in new venue records being set. “Two and a half years ago we decided to change the way we operate the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center Complex. Through our continued partnership with OVG360 we have seen more big-name concerts, comedy shows, family events and – more folks packing the Coliseum and Convention Center and the Municipal Auditorium,” Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said.  “Now, more than ever, it is imperative we invest in our future, so that we can continue to capitalize on the energy, excitement, and positive forward momentum.” The average annual food and beverage earnings have also doubled as compared to pre-pandemic data. We've got Traditional Music Day coming up at Pricketts Fort, as well as other activities there. “We have another Hometown Market coming up in September. There are lots of activities that the family can get out and enjoy as far as entertainment, as well as the rail-trails, disc golf and hiking at Valley Falls State Park.” The CVB combined three popular outdoor activities this summer with a kayaking and rail/trail-based geocaching trail. The 32-cache “Fairmont Land or Aquatic Trail” (F.L.O.A.T.) starts in downtown Fairmont, where geocachers can either kayak nearly eight miles along the river to find 23 caches or get on the rail-trail to find eight additional caches. Her next flick is set to be Netflix's “Family Switch,” which involves body switching, so it's only natural that there are a few nods to “13 Going on 30.” “We overtly mention ‘13 Going on 30',” director McG said. “There's a meta sort of runner in the movie because I like showing the audience that kind of respect. We get it, we get it.” The movie will see Garner finding herself in the body of her teenage daughter, played by “Wednesday” star Emma Myers. The film also stars Ed Helms from “The Office” and everyone's favorite, Rita Moreno. Garner's character isn't the only person switching bodies, everyone in the family gets in on the action, including the dog. Garner was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Charleston, West Virginia at age three. She is a graduate of George Washington High School. Keep an eye out for these critters as you trek through woods and fields: The spring peeper chorus is often one of the first signs of spring. These diminutive tree frogs are about the size of the end of your thumb, but they make a big noise, according to Jim Phillips, retired naturalist from Pipestem Resort. Tygart Lake State Park naturalist Jacob Jackson said his area experiences a lot of bird activity in the spring. “One thing that I notice is increased woodpecker activity, even though many of them stay here year-round. I've noticed more red-headed woodpeckers and northern flickers getting a lot more active,” Jackson said. Guided hikes are offered regularly. Learn more at www.wvstateparks.com. To continue supporting our state's producers, the West Virginia University Extension Small Farm Center will host its annual West Virginia Small Farm Conference from Feb. 22-25 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Attendees will learn how to adapt their enterprises to meet the rising demand for local foods. Read more: https://extension.wvu.edu/news/2023/02/06/2023-small-farm-conference  #3 – From A-Z Animals – Long before West Virginia became a state, prehistoric animals called the land home. Check out some of these fascinating species: Dimetrodon lived around 295–272 million years ago during the Cisuralian Period. This unique extinct animal had neural spine sails with elongated spines protruding from the vertebrae. Scientists have found their tracks in West Virginia. The Edaphosaurus means “pavement lizard.” This large animal is one of the earliest known four-legged land-living vertebrate herbivores, weighing over 600 pounds and measuring up to 11 feet long. Archeologists have uncovered their fossils in West Virginia. A common and popular fossil hunting spot in the state is the Lost River. This is a roadside quarry near Wardensville. It is a 390-million-year-old Devonian reef that was perched at the Kaskaskia Sea. Read on to find more fossil hunting spots in Almost Heaven.
