The Last Breath is based on the unbelievable true story of a diving accident. Kenny speaks with movie Director Alex Parkinson and Producer David Brooks to better understand the thought process behind the movie. Both Guests are co-writers of the 2025 movie, and give an inside look at some of the behind-the-scenes challenges and obstacles. Spoiler Alert: This is an early review and discussion of plot points and questions about the Last Breath. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I'd definitely recommend it!Our interview discusses how actors Fin Cole, Simu Liu and Woody Harrelson were able to capture the true emotion of being trapped in a dangerous rescue mission deep underwater. This movie has a realistic, visceral feel to it. Aside from a little (visually stunning) creative license, it follows the real story of Chris Lemons, the commercial saturation diver who got stranded in a heavy dive suit on the seafloor of the North Sea. If that wasn't enough, it was during a storm, and at night. We got to discuss the set pieces, where it was filmed, and the challenges the producer and directors faced, and ultimately overcame. They also discussed how much scuba training the actors had to undergo, the screening process, and how they handled being underwater during filming. Finally, we discuss the ending, the theories on how he was able to survive, and the strength to get back out there and dive. It's a movie about human survival, the life of a commercial deep saturation diver, and the drive to return to work after going through such a harrowing life-or-death situation.Finn Cole stars as Chris Lemons, Woody Harrelson as Duncan Allock, and Simon Liu as Dave Yuasa.Directed by Alex Parkinson (co-writer)Produced by David Brooks (co-writer)https://www.focusfeatures.com/last-breath/—Kenny Dyal is the host of The Scuba Diving Podcast:TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kenny_dyalInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sweetwater_scubaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/realkennydyalLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kennydyalX: https://twitter.com/RealKennyDyalwww.sweetwaterscuba.com
Gemma and Ian were invited to the pre-release press screening of Last Breath prior to its public release in late February 2025. It's a heart-pounding film that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean's surface. Based on a true story, Last Breath is an electrifying story about teamwork, resilience, and a race against time to do the impossible. Gemma and Ian then interviewed Alex Parkinson, director/co-writer and David Brooks, co-writer/producer about the filming. Also included is our conversation with the real life diver who is central to the film, Chris Lemons. Chris Lemons is professional diver from Scotland. His job : maintenance of underwater gas and oil pipelines and platforms. A hazardous occupation, what with the dangers of decompression and the risks of drowning. Just a heads up, we will be taking a break from TSFU Presents during August, so if you wonder where the episodes went, don't worry, we'll back with an amazing new season in September!"Chris Lemons, along with his colleagues Duncan Allcock and David Yuasa, were carrying out repairs 100 metres (330 ft) below the surface of the North Sea, supported by the support vessel Bibby Topaz. The vessel's dynamic positioning system, supplied by Kongsberg Maritime, failed. This caused the vessel to drift in rough seas, dragging the divers away from the area they were working and eventually snapping the umbilical tether that provided Lemons with heliox to breathe, as well as hot water to heat his suit, power for his light, and a communications link to the surface. He was left with only five minutes of breathable gas contained in the cylinders he wore on his back." - WikipediaYou should listen to the previous diving episode first (Ominous Oceans- Ep. 3: Deadly Deep Diving Disaster), to get a better understanding of the terms used in this episode! This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Chris Lemons has been a commercial diver for over 14 years, specialising in deep sea saturation diving. This form of diving involves living in the claustrophobic confines of a decompression chamber for up to 28 days at a time, commuting daily to the sea bed in a diving bell and working at depths of up to 900 feet for 6 hours at a time. In 2012, a freak accident resulted in the umbilical which provides him with breathing gas, light and heat being severed completely. He was left on the sea bed, in complete darkness 300 feet below the surface, with only the 5 minutes of breathing gas he carried in his emergency tanks and no way to protect himself from the freezing temperatures. It took his heroic rescuers over 40 minutes to retrieve him and his miraculous survival story has baffled experts ever since. His extraordinary story became the Netflix documentary 'Last Breath'. Amazingly, Chris went back to work three weeks later and continues to dive to this day! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On September 18, 2012, while doing routine maintenance work on an underwater structure at the Huntington oilfield in the North Sea, Chris Lemons' dive umbilical was severed almost 100 meters down. With his main breathing gas cut off and only about 6 minutes of gas left in his bailout, Lemons soon fell unconscious. Freezing and alone in the dark, things definitely looked grim for Chris. Despite being in the frigid water without air for around 30 minutes, and for reasons that no one has been able to explain, Chris survived after being rescued by divers Dave Yuasa and Duncan Allcock. This has been documented in a feature film entitled "Last Breath" and can be found on Netflix. Chris comes on the podcast to talk about his amazing ordeal and life after the incident. We cover a variety of topics from diving safety, misconceptions about commercial diving, how he dealt with his return to diving, and have a few beers in typical Bottom Dwellers fashion. Not wanting to take away anything from any other guest - But this has to be my best episode yet! Chris Lemons the star of the Netflix film 'Last Breath' Chris reveals loads of details about how the film came about, how it was made, what happened before, during and after the incident. He also tells about the impact it has had on himself his family and his colleagues. The documentary uses genuine footage and audio recorded at the time of the accident on the divers' radios and body cameras, supplemented with interviews of several of the individuals involved, as well as some reconstructed footage, to tell the story of the accident. Chris Lemons, along with his colleagues Duncan Allcock and David Yuasa, was carrying out repairs 100m below the surface of the North Sea, supported by the support vessel Bibby Topaz. The vessel's dynamic positioning system, supplied by Kongsberg Maritime, failed. This caused the vessel to drift in rough seas, dragging the divers away from the area they were working and eventually snapping the umbilical tether that provided Lemons with heliox to breathe, as well as hot water to heat his suit, power for his light, and a radio link to the surface. He was left with only five minutes of breathable gas contained in the cylinders he wore on his back. For reasons that are unclear to Lemons and his colleagues, but attributed in part to the cold water and have been breathing air with high partial pressure of oxygen, Lemons survived for around 30 minutes while he was located by a remote underwater vehicle and then by Yuasa, who was able to pull him back onboard the diving bell.
This week we talk about Christina Martinez, a young woman hanging out with her boyfriend when three acquaintances show up. They offer a ride home, and she accepts as she has done before, although this time they have a sinister plan to kill her over a misunderstanding. Next we talk about Chris Lemons, a saturation diver. He was over 300 feet deep working on an oil rig when things went wrong. He is now alone, stuck and only has 8 minutes of oxygen left. Listen to how they survived now! To finish the series, the frightening account of the shark attack that so nearly cost Chris Blowes his life. The attack ended with his two mates watching the shark swimming off with their friend's leg in its mouth, towing his surfboard by the leg rope behind it. That imagery is so much worse than anything that Hollywood could dream up.Over the next few hours Chris came as close to dying as one can. Another inexplicable survival story in the vein of last week's episode with diver Chris Lemons. But Chris Blowes survived to marry his girlfriend, have a child, return to work and perhaps most courageously, return to surfing. It is yet another story of courage, inspiration and humility that makes Chris a worthy final guest for the series. I also spoke with Dr Kylie Stanton who coordinated the medical retrieval from the SA Ambulance Emergency Operations Centre. Her medical insights into Chris's survival are equally fascinating. Enjoy!Edit-the quote attributed to Chloe at the end of the podcast was actually stated by Dr Michelle Cresp.Chris Blowes will release his book "Caught Inside" this December 2020.

In this second episode of Life on a Line, we rejoin Chris Lemons on the seabed in the North Sea. His umbilical is severed, and he has switched on his bailout gas with the knowledge that in 8 minutes his gas supply will be exhausted and he will die...Make sure you listen to the previous episode first!
The world of saturation diving is high tech, complex and fascinating. The physics and physiology present unbreakable rules that must be followed to remain safe. The risks of decompression sickness, High Pressure Nervous Syndrome (HPNS), oxygen toxicity and inert gas narcosis are carefully managed. But perhaps the hardest part; living in the confines of the hyperbaric quarters for 28 days with no possibility of early release. You have to be the right kind of person. In 2012, Chris Lemons was an experienced commercial diver, but relatively new to sat diving. "Sat" is the pinnacle of the job, good pay, exciting work and greatly respected. And he loves it. So when a highly improbable sequence of events occurred on board the ship nearly 100m above him in the middle of the North Sea late one night, he managed the chain of event which followed with a measured calm born of inner strength and years of training. He stayed calm right up until the moment his life support umbilical snapped...he then knew that in approximately 8 minutes his breathing gas would run out and he would die.Documentary Last Breath Chris Lemons website
British diver Chris Lemons was working on an oil well underwater in the North Sea in Scotland. He was connected to a boat with something called an 'umbilical chord', which also provided him with air and heat. But he ended up getting tangled in the line and was stuck on the sea bed with only five minutes of air left in his tank. A rescue team was over 35 minutes away. How he was able to survive has left medical experts baffled. Presenter: Emily Webb Producer: June Christie First published on April 23rd, 2019 Picture: Diver Chris Lemons Credit: Courtesy of Dogwoof
Deep sea diver Chris Lemons is not supposed to be here. In September 2012, an unforeseen accident separated Chris from his support unit and plunged him into darkness. He was 100 meters below the surface of the North Sea, disorientated and hooked up to an emergency supply which offered just 6 minutes of life-giving support. His miraculous survival story is not one to be missed!
