In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Alex Hinton discuss the complexities of genocide, its definitions, and the role of perpetrators. Dr. Hinton gives us the conventional, legal, and social scientific definitions of genocide and gives examples of how these affect the legal battles and social impact of different incidents, highlighting the Khmer Rouge mass killings in Cambodia. They also discuss the moral and legal implications of perpetrators and why none of us can be complacent in our understanding of genocide. Key Takeaways: There are three main definitions of genocide. Most recognize it as mass deaths, often perpetrated by a state figure. The UN legal definition requires intent. And the social scientific definition expands beyond the UN definition. While genocide is an atrocity, not all atrocities are genocides. Similarly, not all mass murders are genocides. When legally looking at the genocide perpetrators, the courts typically go after the architects and lower-level individuals are often brought in as witnesses. However, the question of who the perpetrators are is a moral and ethical question still being debated. Education is key - the dynamics that gave rise to Auschwitz are all around us and we are all part of them. We must be self-critical, reflexive people as a first step to make sure that we don't have a recurrence. "It's a potentiality that exists for ourselves and for our societies. You know, it's not comfortable. Many people will say ‘no,' but that's the starting point of prevention, because only when you have that realization can you effectively begin to take action to stop genocide from taking place." — Dr. Alex Hinton Episode References: Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland by Christopher R. What if what is perceived as a negative thing by some here on earth turned out to be a superpower "out there" in the universe somewhere? Jared N. Michaud has taken that idea and soared with it. Listen in to see how an autistic boy is the long-awaited prophecy in another galaxy! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Every once in a while, I get to talk to someone who is clearly brilliant. I usually enjoy it, but once in a while it's frustrating (and then I usually use the experience by writing a novella to deal with the frustration). But even more rare, I chat with someone who is both brilliant and capable of not "talking down" to me or too far above me. Some people just have the gift of interacting with everyone on their level. Jared Michaud is definitely one of those rare gems. I had a blast talking with him, got encouraged in my faith, got excited about his Energmatrice6 series, and walked away thinking, "Wow..." It was, a bit I think, how people who chatted with C. S. Lewis probably felt. He had the gift of being able to converse at nearly any level as well. Don't miss out on Jared's podcast, Modern Apocrypha. Jared mentioned a couple of books, and I wanted to list those here: Evolution 2.0 by Perry Marshall--a looking at Darwinism and Intelligent Design in a new light. Ordinary Men by Christopher R Browning--his take is that it's rough but a good read. Brightstar: Energematrice6 – The Epimyth Begins by Jared N. Michaud “Only the void is content to wait in peace.” Brightstar is the beginning of an epic space adventure that introduces readers to Nate, a boy desperate to escape the prison of an ordinary life made unbearable by his autism. When he is unexpectedly transported to another universe, Nate's perceived disability is transformed into a near superpower. In the Aurora Galaxy, where his arrival has been prophesied for thousands of years, Nate finds the weight of expectations difficult to bear. After being greeted by an ancient ally, Nate begins gathering a misfit group of “odds” from every corner of the universe. Nate's odyssey, which starts in the most prestigious school in civilization, will end battling monsters from the darkest imaginations of an ancient, captive Earth. Coping with greater and greater adversity, Nate finds himself confronted by enemies who all seem to be connected in suspicious ways. In the end, Nate must stand before the Lightmaker Himself, who sent Nate to the Aurora Galaxy in the first place. Brightstar is the beginning of a myth in the tradition of authors like C.S. Lewis, written to introduce young people to the most important stories and values of Western Civilization. Rich language and an epic story provide the backdrop for an exciting, yet thoughtful space fantasy. Learn more about Jared on his WEBSITE and follow him on GoodReads. Like to listen on the go? Historian and author Christopher R. Browning joins Tim to talk about his study of the Holocaust and the “Final Solution” in Poland. In this episode, Christopher discusses his book, “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland” and how a group of otherwise average, everyday men turned into one of Hitler's most prolific killing squads in World War II. This episode was first released January 24, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/223_-_Ordinary_Men_Making_a_Kill_Squad.mp3 Long before the world heard the term “Holocaust” in connection with the Second World War, and even before the mass killing started, it all began with an atmosphere in Germany that supported the expelling of Jewish people from territories controlled by Hitler's Germany. At some point, instead of expulsion, the movement would turn into the mass executions of millions of Jews in places like Poland. Historian and author Christopher Browning wrote the landmark book on how such horrific events could take place. It's called “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland.” To set the stage for the larger story of the book, Browning tells us how it began. This passage is part of the opening chapter that book: “Pale and nervous, with choking voice and tears in his eyes, (Major) Trapp visibly fought to control himself as he spoke. The battalion, he said plaintively, had to perform a frightfully unpleasant task. This assignment was not to his liking, indeed it was highly regrettable, but the orders came from the highest authorities. If it would make their task any easier, the men should remember that in Germany the bombs were falling on women and children. He then turned to the matter at hand. The Jews had instigated the American boycott that had damaged Germany, one policeman remembered Trapp saying. There were Jews in the village of Jozefow who were involved with the partisans, he explained according to two others. The battalion had now been ordered to round up these Jews. The male Jews of working age were to be separated and taken to a work camp. The remaining Jews – the women, children, and elderly – were to be shot on the spot by the battalion. Having explained what awaited his men, Trapp then made an extraordinary offer: if any of the older men among them did not feel up to the task that lay before him, he could step out.” These were the major's comments to the battalion of mostly middle-aged men on the morning of July 13, 1942. They weren't Nazis. They weren't even members of the German army. They made up a police battalion of working-class men too old to serve in the army. Those men would round up and shoot 1,500 Jews in that Polish village on that one day. That battalion would eventually kill upwards of 83,000 captives during the war, making it one of the most efficient German killing squads in the war. But as the title of Christopher Browning's book suggests, before the war, he says these were considered Ordinary Men. Przypomina o niej we Wrocławiu pewien cmentarz. Dotyczył on listu, jaki członek Kręgu z Krzyżowej skierował do papieża przedstawiając hitlerowskie zbrodnie związane z Holocaustem. Ta świadomość pozwala nam dokonywać równie świadomych wyborów tu i teraz. - Rozgrzewka:)) - Nowinki / starowinki - 4:48 - Lektury - 25:13 - Temat przewodni - 49:20 Pełny tekst opisu zamieściliśmy na stronie internetowej naszego projektu: http://2historykow1mikrofon.pl/czy-napiszemy-historie-zwyklych-ludzi/ Wymienione w czasie audycji publikacje i materiały: - Ganz normale Männer - Der vergessene Holocaust, reż. Derek joins Scott and Sean to discuss Young the Giant's 2010 song Garands (formerly called Garands at Normandie). While the song itself only vaguely references a soldier searching the woods during WWII, the lyrics inspire a larger discussion on the everyman placed in extraordinary situations. Derek enlightens us on Christopher R. Browning's 1992 book Ordinary Men and it's expose on the "ordinary men" of the German Reserve Police Battalion 101 in German-occupied Poland during WWII. **STEPHANIE BOGERT https://www.stephanieborgert.de/start **ALLE IHRE BÜCHER https://www.stephanieborgert.de/autorin/erfolg-ist-ein-mannschaftssport **FAMILIENGESCHICHTE - HUMANISMUS - DEMOKRATIE https://www.stephanieborgert.de/profil/haltung-zeigen Trailer über Stephanie Borgerts Großvater "Der Ordner" https://vimeo.com/463489703 **DER LESESTOFF „Gehorsam macht frei, Eine kurze Geschichte des Managements – von Hitler bis heute“, Johann Chapoutot https://bit.ly/3v4nG9y „Ganz normale Männer: Das Reserve-Polizeibataillon 101 und die "Endlösung" in Polen“, Christopher R. 'Ordinary Men' by Christopher R. Browning details the experiences of Reserve Police Battalion 101 during the occupation of Poland by Nazi Germany. It examines the role played by the battalion in the murder/exportation of the Jewish people in this era. Browning shares his thoughts on some of the psychological and ethical issues raised by the circumstances.I summarised the book as follows. "This was a sombre and difficult read. It's extremely detailed so be prepared to learn in excruciating detail about the gore & heartbreak of the mass shootings in cold blood. Psychologically there were so many aspects to explore and the author really goes deep. A stark reminder of what ordinary men (aka all of us) are capable of."As always, I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Was macht Menschen zu Massenmördern?
Dr. Christopher Browning, visiting faculty in the University of Washington's Department of History, explains how individuals and organizations mobilized to rescue refugees in Nazi-occupied France through the story of aid worker-turned-rescuer Tracy Strong, Jr. Born in Seattle in 1915, Tracy Strong, Jr. served as a humanitarian relief worker in the Vichy internment camps for “undocumented” refugees, primarily Jews from central Europe, in southern France from 1941-42. Convinced that the most important goal should be to get people out of the camps, not improve life in the camps, Strong set up one of the first “safe houses” for refugees in the French rescue village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. His story illustrates how individuals, working together with community and organizational networks, were able to oppose Nazi policies and save lives in World War II, and offers insights into how concerned citizens can organize to resist inhumane policies today. Christopher R. Browning is the Frank Porter Graham Professor of History Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was formerly on the faculty at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. He has published nine books on the Holocaust, including “Ordinary Men,” “Origins of the Final Solution,” and “Remembering Survival,” all of which won the National Jewish Book Award. He is currently a visiting instructor for the University of Washington’s Department of History.

We turn now to a play that's based on a book by a former journalist whom many Baltimoreans of a certain age will recognize. After Richard Hollander’s parents were killed in a car accident in the mid-1980s, he discovered a suitcase full of correspondence that gave him great insight to the fate of his Jewish relatives in German-occupied Poland during the Holocaust. That discovery led him to write a book, with co-authors Christopher R. Browning and Nechama Tec, which he published in 2007, called “Every Day Lasts a Year: A Jewish Family’s Correspondence from Poland.” That book, in turn, inspired a play that is currently on stage at the Everyman Theater. It’s called The Book of Joseph. It was adapted by Seattle-based playwright Karen Hartman, whose other recent works include Roz and Ray and Project Dawn. She joins us on the phone from Seattle.Author Rich Hollander was a reporter for the long-defunct Baltimore News American newspaper and later for WBAL Television. He now runs Millbrook Communications, a sports marketing firm in Baltimore. He joins Tom in Studio A.
