This week, we're talking sidelines. Not drop shipping or crypto schemes - we mean the sort of things architects do to supplement their practice incomes. Kate breaks down the Penny Farthing principle and introduces us to Debt Recycling. Warwick argues for paying yourself properly, while Mick warns against marrying an architect. It's a chat about money, identity, and why the big wheel might be more important than the little wheel. (As always, none of this is financial or legal advice. Do your own research. Make your own decisions. You rube.)In Detail is hosted by Warwick Mihaly, Kate FitzGerald and Mick Moloney Find us: www.indetail.show Mail: indetail.show@gmail.com

Riding a Penny Farthing bicycle from the Sierra Nevada mountains to Yokohama, Japan, Thomas Stevens began his epic two-and-a-half year journey around the world on 22nd April, 1884. Along the way, he encountered mountain lions, Persian aristocracy, and thousands of supporters from bicycle clubs, who turned up to hear him speak. His journey was endlessly delayed by having to demonstrate the virtues of his bike to anyone who asked. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the ‘wheel-men' of 1884 desperately needed a role-model like Stevens; reveal how he was able to monetize his adventurism in a very modern way; and unearth the surprising second career he embarked upon back in his native England…  Further Reading: • ‘The Fearless Traveller: Around the World with Thomas Stevens' (Adventure Cycling, 2010): https://www.adventurecycling.org/sites/default/assets/resources/201005_TheFearlessTraveler_Koss.pdf • ‘Thomas Stevens, a Berkhamsted pioneer, crosses America by bicycle' (Berkhamsted Local History & Museum Society): https://berkhamsted-history.org.uk/thomas-stevens-a-berkhamsted-pioneer-crosses-america-by-bicycle/ • ‘Epic Explorers: Thomas Stevens' (The EPIC Channel, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqHY1-TL12o #Explorer #Sport #UK #USA #1800s Love the show? When Joff Summerfield set out to ride around the globe on his handmade penny farthing in 2006, he sold absolutely everything he owned to fund the adventure – and start with a clean slate. As he set off, his whole world was packed into a small rucksack on his back and some panniers on top of his penny farthing.Joff's story is one of the most stunning that Rob and Eliot have discovered on Just Ride so far. Most of it must be heard to be believed! From being robbed at knifepoint in Ecuador and accidentally eating dinner in a Chinese home, to freewheeling down the Himalayas and taking in the Millennium New Year in Paris, Joff's journeys have been like no other. And that's all while rolling round the world on a 49in fixed-gear penny farthing. His current steed has done nearly 40,000 miles. As you can imagine, Rob and Eliot couldn't get their heads around it.As well as his physical feats, Joff also has a refreshing outlook on life – never travelled but want to? Do it! You'll find a way. If you want to watch this full-length episode with Joff (and his penny farthing!) then you can find it on Red Bull TV, and if you want to email the show then please hit us up at podcast@redbull.com.If you want to learn more about Joff and his exploits, you can check out his YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/joff1000 And follow Joff on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/joff_summerfield/?hl=enWe'll see you in two weeks.

In 1884, 17 year old Pittsburg resident Frank Lenz took a month of his accountant's salary and jumped headlong into the most bad-ass hobby of the time: Penny Farthing. Unfortunately, the march of time and mankind's slow but sure ability to eventually use common sense meant that Frank's dream of riding a big-wheeled bike around the world was unlikely to happen. So instead, he traded his ridiculous 55-lb monstrosity for a "safety bike" and took off west.  Would he make it home? Yehoooooo, welcome to the Beer Engine, the podcast where we talk about everything from the latest happenings in the NBA to the good ol' days of penny farthing bikes. Today we're gonna be talking about how modern bikes just ain't cuttin' it compared to those classic penny farthing's.Now I ain't sayin' these newfangled bikes ain't got their perks, but let me tell ya, there's just something about the simplicity and stability of a penny farthing that can't be beat. But let's not forget about the NBA! Ain't it somethin' to see LeBron James still dominate the court at his age? That man is a basketball god, I tell ya what. And what about Steph Curry and the Warriors? They're looking pretty good this season. Now, I know some folks might be thinkin', "Moe, what do the NBA and penny farthing bikes have in common?" Well, let me tell ya, it's all about tradition and keeping things classic.Just like how the NBA has been around for over 80 years and has some of the greatest players to ever grace the court, the penny farthing has been around for over a century and was the bicycle of choice back in the day.So next time you're out riding your modern bike, just remember the stability and style of those classic penny farthing's. And while you're at it, grab a cold one and catch up on the latest in the NBA.That's all for today folks, see ya next time on the Beer Engine. Cheers! ★ Support this podcast ★

The basic mechanics of the bike are pretty simple --- it's basically a triangle with wheels and a chain drive to propel it forward. No batteries or engines. It seems obvious in hindsight .... And that's why most people guess the bike was invented a long time ago. Yet the ‘running machine,' a kind of early proto-bike, debuted around 1817.For much more on the history of the bicycle, check out Jody Rosen's book: Two Wheels Good: The History and Mystery of the Bicycle. The Safety Bicycle

In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the ‘wheel-men' of 1884 desperately needed a role-model like Stevens; reveal how he was able to monetize his adventurism in a very modern way; and unearth the surprising second career he embarked upon back in his native England…  Further Reading: • ‘The Fearless Traveller: Around the World with Thomas Stevens' (Adventure Cycling, 2010): https://www.adventurecycling.org/sites/default/assets/resources/201005_TheFearlessTraveler_Koss.pdf • ‘Thomas Stevens, a Berkhamsted pioneer, crosses America by bicycle' (Berkhamsted Local History & Museum Society): https://berkhamsted-history.org.uk/thomas-stevens-a-berkhamsted-pioneer-crosses-america-by-bicycle/ • ‘Epic Explorers: Thomas Stevens' (The EPIC Channel, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqHY1-TL12o #Explorer #Sport #UK #USA #1800s For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/Retrospectors We'll be back on Monday! Raya and Stephen take their advocate role as seriously as ever as a magazine article listing the 17 worst kind of cyclists is disseminated, interrogated, autopsied, and mostly ridiculed. Side issues from this lead to discussions as to if a Penny Farthing is actually the world's most efficient bicycle (it should be), and we touch on the BIG questions in cycling. Red lights, and helmets. Yeah, we go there. Strap in. Or don't. (Apparently safety is a personal issue). Plus, all the news (both on and off course) from Raya's recent trip to the Dubai Triathlon (she's a complete soldier don't you know), and a feelgood kitbag that's going to make you want to hug someone near you. Go on, do it. Finally, the Velominati devolves into why Americans can't use their hands correctly (or maybe European's can't?), and the signalling question no cycling rulebook ever tells you: the best way to call someone a w*nker from a bicycle.    The Cyclist Pod (c) Stephen Grant and Raya Hubbell www.cyclistpod.com Music 'Zazie' c/o Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3
