Cities around the world are on the frontlines of climate disaster. In Lisbon, Portugal, unprecedented flooding has required the construction of significant climate resilience projects like the city's drainage master plan. In the global south, cities like Ahmedabad, India are getting hotter and hotter…and the women who live in this region are disproportionately impacted physically and financially by heat wave events. But as we can see through the shining examples of both these urban centres, by combining mitigation and adaptation actions - like innovative parametric heat insurance projects, and equitable public transportation initiatives - with community informed policies, we can build resilient cities that will be able to withstand the increasing impacts of climate change.Featured guests:Carlos Moedas, Mayor of LisbonKathy Baughman McLeod , CEO, Climate Resilience for All Links: 10 of the Oldest Continuously Inhabited Cities in the World - How Stuff WorksHorizon Europe - European CommissionEuropean Research CouncilThe US brain drain has begun - PoliticoLisbon approved free public transport for young and elderly residents - Mayors of EuropeLisbon Mayor Wants Companies to Help Fix City's Housing Shortage - BloombergLisbon Drainage Master PlanLisbon aims to be carbon neutral by 2030 with EU support - LPPClimate Resilience for AllHeat and gender: Enhancing her resilience to rising temperatures - World BankWorld-First Financial Product Combining Insurance and Cash Payments for Extreme Heat is a Lifeline for 50,000 Informal Women Workers in India - Climate Resilience for AllIf you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website: https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/ Cities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and Cities 1.5 is supported by C40 Cities and the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy. The concept of a walkable community is not new and isn't even particularly nefarious, but when Big Tech and government are added to the mix with the goal of corraling human beings into areas with the purpose of restricting their movement, then we have an enormous problem. The Rockefeller Foundation started this push back in 2013 with its 100 Resilient Cities program which eventually devolved into just a network of 100 woke “equitable cities” prioritizing how to fight plastic. The Strong Cities Network was born in 2015 out of the United Nations in order to indoctrinate kids into Marxist ideologies through the Young Cities program. The current push for 15-Minute Cities should have alarm bells ringing for anyone paying attention to what the reality of this endeavor actually means. Full tracking, travel restrictions, carbon consumption taxes, and climate lockdowns are coming our way unless humanity stops this before it begins. Are you interested in how to manage multiple disasters at once? Summary of the article titled Misfortunes never come singly. A holistic approach to urban resilience and sustainability challenges from 2023 by Cristina Serbanica and Daniela Luminita Constantin, published in the Cities journal. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Keygan Huckleberry in episode 282 talking about disaster management and resilience. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see the connection between urban resilience and sustainability. This article highlights the interplay between acute shocks, long-term stresses, and their implications for urban safety and inclusiveness. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Global urban agendas must be adaptable to regional challenges, as different cities face varied combinations of shocks and stresses. Urban resilience focuses on immediate responses to shocks, while sustainability prioritizes long-term well-being and equity. The concepts of resilience and sustainability overlap in areas like safety and inclusiveness, which are crucial for resilient, sustainable cities. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: The United Nations' World Cities Report 2020 predicts that the world will continue to urbanize over the next decades, despite the pandemic experience, whose impact on urbanization trends is not clear at this point in time. By 2070, almost 60 % of the world population is projected to live in urban areas and be exposed to both chronic and emerging urban challenges (UN Habitat, 2022). Within this framework, “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” appears as one of the most prominent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UNGA, 2015). The New Urban Agenda builds on the SDG 11 and affirms the global commitment to support the sustainable and resilient urban development (UNGA, 2017). At the same time, fostering resilient cities and investing in urban resilience remains high on the agenda of international organizations and global governance networks such as the UN Habitat (e.g. “City Resilience Profiling Programme”), the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (e.g. “Making Cities Resilient” campaigns), the World Bank (e.g. “Cities Resilience Programme”), the OECD (e.g. “Resilient cities”), ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (e.g. the “Resilient Cities” Programme), Cities Alliance (e.g. “Joint Work Programme on Resilient Cities”), ARUP and the Rockefeller Foundation (e.g. The 100 Resilient Cities (100 RC) Programme, City Resilience Index) etc. In the wake of Covid 19 pandemic, there is a growing consensus that cities offer unique opportunities to enhance resilience to the effects of pandemic, but also to achieving sustainable development (UN Habitat, 2021). Send me a messageSam Kernaghan is someone I've had the very good fortune of spending quite a bit of time with over the last couple of years and I'm grateful for that. Sam is the Resilience Director for the Committee for Sydney - an urban policy think tank that has the rare opportunity of being able to work above the challenges and messy interactions of problems, risks and opportunities the city faces. Sam does this after more than 20 years working in similar fields - from his time in Sri Lanka helping with post tsunami reconstruction, to working on and leading a lot of the early Rockefeller 100 Resilient Cities work across the Asia Pacific in countries like Indonesia, India, Japan and New Zealand, before returning to lead this important work back in his home city.Resilience has been and can be a jargon heavy term - it's had it's time in the sun too just like regeneration seems to be everywhere at the moment. Most simply though I appreciate the simple premise of the word and it's value to what many of us in sustainability and social impact think about - how to withstand pressures and how to adapt and evolve into something stable, healthy and able to be counted on. I think one thing that can be difficult about the term is its wide applicability - everything from individual mental health to the ability of complex urban systems to handle and respond to any number of shocks and stress events. Sam is just the person to be speaking about this though as he has seen more than most as this field of urban resilience has developed and evolved since the mid 2000s as more thinking and effort has gone into better understanding the interplay between how increasing urbanisation, a changing climate and more development highlights or exacerbates existing inequalities and problems in a specific place. In this chat we cover a tonne - his role at Committee for Sydney and some great work he and his team have been doing on flood and heat perils and risks, the profundity of his time in Sri Lanka in his 20s then the fascinating and important work he's been doing since. There are a lots of valuable insights in this one, I know you'll come away more knowledgable having listened.I of course loved being able to spend this time with Sam, and his wisdom on the dynamics of power, the virtue of patience and the necessity of preparation all really struck me. I hope you enjoy it.Today's show is delivered with Gilay Estate. Add Finding Nature to your booking reservation for a free dinner and breakfast for each night you stay. For this Holiday Weekend, hear the year of the #BLTrees series in two days.  Today, June through the three-part conclusion in October -- including your haikus.  Plus, a flashback to May 2020 and listeners' favorite bird songs. First, Part Two of #BLTrees for which listeners were invited to pick a tree and follow it through the year as we checked in every month with Marielle Anzelone, botanist and founder of NYC Wildflower Week (.org), who proposed the series, and different guests each month: June: Charles Nilon, professor in the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources, talks about trees and equity. July: Kate Orff, landscape architect, founder of SCAPE Studio and a professor at Columbia University where she directs the Urban Design Program and the Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes, looks at trees and climate change resiliency. August:  James Lendemer, lichenologist at CUNY and the New York Botanical Garden and the co-author of Urban Lichens: A Field Guide for Northeastern North America (Yale University Press, 2021), and Miles Zhang, evolutionary biologist specializing in the study of parasitic wasps, talk about two of the many kinds of living creatures that live on trees. September: Brandi Cannon-Force, botanist and science educator, talks about the fruit of trees. October: First, Robert Macfarlane, a fellow at the University of Cambridge and the author of several books, including Underland: A Deep Time Journey (W. W. Norton & Company, 2019), looks deeply at trees as worlds unto themselves.  Then WNYC audio and video producer Amy Pearl, talks about memorial trees.  And the series concludes with Brian and Marielle sharing some of the many of the listeners' haikus written for, about, or in the 'voice of' their trees. And as a 'tree-adjacent' treat, from prime birding season in May of 2020, Heather Wolf, a web developer for Cornell Lab of Ornithology and its eBird project and the author of Birding at the Bridge: In Search of Every Bird on the Brooklyn Waterfront (The Experiment, 2016) talks about how to identify birds by their songs as listeners imitate some of their favorites.   These interviews were lightly edited for time and clarity; the original web versions of the series interviews are available through these links:  #BLTrees series page (Nov 2021 - Oct 2022) Name That Birdsong! Today we're bringing you an episode of City Space, a Globe and Mail podcast about how to make our cities better, hosted by Adrian Lee.Climate change isn't just coming, it's here. And cities are uniquely susceptible to its effects because of their population density and infrastructure. So how can they better prepare for the increasingly devastating impacts of the climate crisis? In this episode, we explore the concept of climate resilience — how prepared are cities to anticipate, prepare for and respond to natural disasters? We hear from Thaddeus Pawlowski, an urban designer, professor and managing director at the Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes at Columbia University, who was on the ground helping New York City rebuild after Hurricane Sandy. Plus, Adrian speaks to Toronto's former Chief Resilience Officer Elliott Cappell about how he helped Toronto develop a plan to deal with climate disasters and what gives him hope for our future.
