Trump's tariffs have created a labyrinth of regulations in the automotive world, with 25% duties on vehicle imports and additional tariffs layered on top for certain countries. This complex system has manufacturers, dealers, and consumers scrambling to understand what it means for vehicle pricing and availability.Aiden Bergsman from Anderson Economic Group breaks down this puzzle for listeners, explaining how these tariffs affect everything from manufacturing decisions to consumer prices. The good news for car shoppers? Vehicles already on dealer lots won't see these price increases, creating an unusual opportunity for those in the market right now. Some manufacturers are even offering special pricing to move current inventory before tariff-affected vehicles arrive. The conversation shifts to broader economic impacts, with insights on how these trade policies affect investment portfolios and retirement accounts. While market volatility creates anxiety, historical perspective suggests patience usually pays off for long-term investors. As Bergsman notes, "Panicking can only make it worse for some people and is going to add more stress and more anxiety."The episode takes a nostalgic turn as Jeff explores the bygone era of station wagons, reminding us of rear-facing seats, wood paneling, and the freedom of sprawling out in "the way back" without seatbelts. This cultural touchstone serves as a fascinating counterpoint to today's discussions about vehicle design and safety regulations.Whether you're concerned about your next vehicle purchase, curious about economic impacts, or simply enjoy automotive history, this episode delivers valuable insights with real-world applications. Visit andersoneconomicgroup.com/tariffs for detailed analysis of tariff impacts on specific vehicles and manufacturers.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!ProAm Auto AccessoriesProAm Auto Accessories: "THE" place to go to find exclusive and hard to find parts and accessories!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Luxon's stuck. Poor old Luxon, he's stuck between a rock and a hard place really, isn't he? And it's only going to get worse as we head into next year. Just when he's done dealing with David Seymour on the Treaty Principles Bill - he never wanted to go with but agreed to get into government. That was shut down on Thursday and now the fire kicks off - he's having to hose that down too. He's been hosing it down since last Friday now. That's Winston and his big noting about how to deal with Trump, right. The phone calls that Luxon hastily arranged to avoid being in the House for the death of the Treaty Principles Bill are the same phone calls that have now started this tussle with Winston? He just can't win. Either way, there's coalition land mines to step on. Here's the thing, Winston first made these comments last Thursday. He said Luxon should have called them or whatever the words were. So, he should have just picked up the phone, called them straight away, squared it off, have it out, whatever, move on. Instead, you're trying to announce a tourism boost at Sky City on Monday and it's still dragging out. Some journalist in the press conference yesterday even asked Luxon whether he'd apologised to Winston Peters. For goodness sakes, what an outrageous question. For the record, Luxon gave a speech basically saying he supports free trade. Big deal we all do. Then he calls a couple of world leaders he's met and tells them he likes free trade. Big deal, guess what? That's fine because he's the Prime Minister. That's actually his job. He is the boss. Winston's just feeling a bit left out over in Tonga obviously, so he's running his mouth off. What does Luxon do? Does he just have a private call and hope that Winston calms down? Or does he take a harder line in public with Winston? Call him out? Tell us he's only the Foreign Minister, not the Prime Minister, and he should stay in his lane. Whatever the strategy, he needs to figure it out quick smart. As I wrote about at the weekend, Winston's only just getting started. There's an election to fight next year and he'll be unshackled from the Deputy PM reins next month. Then it's all on for young and old. And Luxon this week has been warned. What should we do to protect our finances and investments right now? First off, when markets get scary? We should avoid chasing predictions. It turns out that creating financial resilience is not about making perfect predictions about what's coming next. It's about building a life that can adapt to whatever arrives. This approach works, regardless of what's happening with tariffs, markets, or potential recessions. By focusing on what you can control, you're building financial strength that serves you well in any economic environment. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

With tariffs in the news, we sift through the torrent of headlines coming from both sides of the border and beyond. In the first half, we look at the breaking news on tariffs, with an 11th hour agreement with Mexico giving a pause to the proposed 25% duty on imports. We also look at why Canada may be more reticent to strike a deal, and what the bigger objectives may be. Is it all about oil and inflation, or are we looking at a 21st century version of the Monroe Doctrine aimed at China? We also break down how the Fed is assessing the situation. In the second half, we finally get to the stock market. We look at the effect of Deep Seek news coming out of China on AI stocks, and whether it represents a opportunity or a threat for the sector. We also recap the first big week of technology earnings: Four of the Magnificent Seven reported. While the initial reaction was positive for three of the four, only one has held onto its gains. We close with our thoughts on where we are in the economic (and market) cycle, and where we are looking for opportunities. Red or Blue? Republican or Democrat (or some other political party)? Our goal on this week's episode is not to debate one candidate over another, or one party's philosophy over another's, but we did think we would take time after the recent election to talk about the various fiscal policies proposed or promoted by the candidates. How will President Trump's reelection impact areas like: Crypto Gas & Energy Prices Interest Rates (specifically possibly limiting credit card interest rates) Tarriffs the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) Student Loans Tax Proposals Rather than promoting or criticizing one candidate or one party's position, we simply discuss what the candidates wanted to accomplish around these financial topics and more. Tom welcomes back Dr. Nomi Prins, financial expert and best-selling author, about the impact of the U.S. election on markets and her outlook for the economy. Dr. Prins highlights the disconnect between the thriving financial markets and the stagnant real economy, with high debt levels and inflation surpassing wage growth. The election brought attention to voters' economic concerns, although neither candidate presented substantial plans for addressing debt and deficit issues. Trump's promises on immigration and inflation reassured some, but his lack of a comprehensive economic strategy remains a concern for Dr. Prins. Tom and Dr. Prins explore the economic implications of tariffs, focusing on Trump's plan to impose tariffs on imports. The reduction in supply from tariffs causes price increases and inflation, potentially harming the domestic economy unless the country can offset these costs by participating in multiple parts of the supply chain. The nuclear energy industry is positioned for growth following the election results, with companies like Microsoft and Amazon considering nuclear power deals. The state of energy development in the United States is also explored in the context of Trump's plans to deregulate. Dr. Prins discusses the movement of the US dollar after the election results and the potential for de-dollarization. The US dollar continues to be the world's top reserve currency, but longer-term trends suggest de-dollarization through trade agreements in non-dollar currencies, alternative trading currencies, and infrastructure development. Central banks' interest in gold as a hedge against risks, coupled with increasing demand from consumers in countries like China and India, positions gold to play an essential role in this framework. Trump's promises on immigration and inflation influenced markets, but lack of economic strategy remains a concern. Kiwi winemakers are anxiously waiting to see if and when they'll be hit by high tarriffs exporting into the United States - following the election of Donald Trump. President elect Trump campaigned on introducing tariffs of up to 20 percent on all Imported Goods - as part of his America First economic policy. If he goes through with the election promise it could hit our exporters hard; and with the US market accounting for some 40 percent of New Zealand's wine exports it could be devastating for the industry here. New Zealand Winegrowers Chief Executive Officer Philip Gregan spoke to Susana Lei'ataua.
A lucrative free trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates could be signed into action today. Trade Minister Todd McClay is meeting with his Emirati counterpart as part of his three-day visit to Wellington. Negotiations for the FTA began in May, meaning it would be less than 100 days to get it over the line. Former trade negotiator Charles Finny told Mike Hosking there's huge potential for growth. He says we're looking at 5% tariffs on some dairy products and frozen meats, and taking that off would be really, really useful. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Trump calls for 200% tariffs on John Deere. Mark Cubans says that's insane.
The seafood industry isn't making the most of free trade deals. FTAs with the UK, European Union, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership eliminated tariffs on some seafood. However, at the recent Seafood Conference, it was revealed a large part of the industry is still paying. Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Lisa Futschek told Mike Hosking they're working to figure out what's causing this problem. She says it appears to be at the importer end where the paperwork is not being filled in correctly. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

During the COVID 19 pandemic of 2019-2021 government distrust has led to election fraud accusations & demonstrations, vaccination mandate protests and anti-mask movements, calling Government's response to public health crises into question. The results of the 2020 Presidential Election were marred by allegations of fraud leading up to the January 6, 2021 breach of the Capitol building by protestors, who were attempting to halt the counting of Presidential Election results. The count was disrupted by pro-Trump followers who broke into the building, forcing members of Congress to flee. This delayed the certification of the election results to the morning of Thursday the 7th of January, instead of the 6th as planned. The box containing the Electoral College certificates had to be moved and secured, in order to prevent the results of the election from literally being stolen.By the end of the day, 5 people were dead: a Capitol police officer who was beaten by rioters and sprayed in the face with a bear deterrent, an air force veteran who was shot by police when climbing through a broken door, and three people who died in medical emergencies during the melee (one man due to a heart attack, a women who was crushed to death after being stampeded by demonstrators and stroke victim). What is going on in America? Is this something new, or an old phenomenon that has simply increased in its intensity?

Douglas Irwin is the John French Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College and the author of Clashing Over Commerce: A History of US Trade Policy. On this episode, Irwin provides an overview to the history of U.S. trade policy from the 18th century to the modern day, highlighting significant legislation as well as the formation of important intergovernmental organizations that have sprung up along the way. 19:53: On the flawed logic behind the Tariff Act of 1930, and the parallels with similarly problematic thinking in the modern day: “There's absolutely a parallel there because some Democrats in Congress said, ‘You know, we ought to really think about this carefully, and not just our domestic interest but also our export interests, and other countries might retaliate.' And basically, the reaction of most members of Congress was, Republicans at the time, ‘No, we don't have to worry about that. This is a domestic piece of legislation, it doesn't really concern other countries. They're not going to retaliate.' And, of course, they did.” 39:40: Doug discusses the tips and tricks behind one example of “tariff engineering”: “The tariffs applied to motorcycles with piston displacements of 700cc and above. What Honda started doing is producing a 699cc version. Now the difference [between the two] is imperceptible, but just by changing that one cubic centimeter, it changed the whole tariff treatment and you avoided a 45 percent tariff and were assessed at a much, much lower rate.” Jordan will be hosting his first-ever live recording of ChinaEconTalk at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, D.C., at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19.
