In this episode, we dive into the murky waters of Louisiana's Barataria Bay, home to one of the most enduring legends of the Gulf Coast: the story of Jean Lafitte and his ghostly pirates. Jean Lafitte, the notorious French pirate-turned-folk-hero, built an empire of outlaws deep in the bayous, where he and his crew amassed unimaginable wealth by plundering Spanish ships. But Lafitte's cunning went beyond piracy—he was a master of secrecy, and his treasure remains hidden in the Louisiana swamps to this day.

It's Thursday, and that means it's time to catch up on politics with Stephanie Grace, the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate's editorial director and columnist. We discuss how the state's new Republican supermajority functioned during the legislature's recent special session on crime/ And we look ahead to the regular session which starts on March 11.  The loss of protective marsh along Louisiana's coast continues. A $3 billion project to help slow things down broke ground last August. Halle Parker, coastal desk reporter, tells us how a lawsuit filed by Plaquemines Parish earlier this year against the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority has brought the effort, known as the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project, to a halt. While the sounds of brass bands, card readings and drumming waft through New Orleans' Jackson Square, University of New Orleans archaeology students are inside Saint Louis Cathedral excavating. Contractors discovered that the 1849 cathedral foundation wasn't the only one there during a recent renovation.  Ryan Gray, anthropology professor and New Orleans urban historical archaeologist, shares more on the ongoing dig.  _____ Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

Typically, a “fish story” is a tall tale about “the one that got away.” It's usually told by a person relaying details about a peaceful day spent fishing on placid waters when the most exciting thing that happened was a fish that could have been dinner swam away. Like so many things, it's different in Louisiana. Here, fish stories include hurricanes. Salt water intrusion. Fishing camps being flooded and destroyed. And “the one that got away” is more likely to be an insurance claim that was denied. Here, people in the leisure fishing business are not your typical fishermen. Or typical businessmen. They're larger-than-life characters who are equally adept at battling the elements and battling FEMA. And who can manage balance sheets and change bedsheets. Fred Lewis has been an actor in a bunch of Hollywood movies, including Blaze with Paul Newman, and Tin Cup with Kevin Costner. In 2003, when the only way to go fishing in Venice Louisiana for longer than a day was to stay at the one available fishing camp, Fred had a houseboat towed in from Alabama. Eventually he started renting it out to other folks. Before long, Fred had 5 houseboats docked at the Venice Marina. He's sold one, and his stepson, Steve Brantley, has two. Fred's company, Venice Houseboat Rentals, keeps the houseboats rented out pretty much continually. They all sleep six to eight people. It's no exaggeration to say, Fred has almost single-handedly created a short-term-rental leisure-fishing industry in Venice. Even closer to New Orleans, around 30 minutes south of the city, you can go fishing in Barataria. There you'll find another impressive renaissance man, Theophile Bourgeois.  Theophile is the front man of a popular New Orleans-based band, called Them Ol' Ghosts. He's a tattoo artist who founded an Uptown New Orleans tattoo shop - Oak Street Tattoo. And in Barataria he's the owner of Bourgeois Fishing Charters. Bourgeois Fishing Charters is anchored in a 10,000 square foot guest house that sleeps 52 people. They have their own fishing boats, four charter-boat captains, two full-time cooks, a housekeeper, a reservation department, and even their own seaplane. In New Orleans we have a number of terms for activities that are unique understatements. For example, “going to hear music” typically refers to a night out that involves a whole lot more than just “hearing music.” “Going by my momma's” can refer to anything from stopping by for a crawfish boil to painting your mom's house. Similarly, in most parts of the world, “Gone fishin'” evokes a kind of mental health day: A temporary checking out of daily life in favor of a slice of solitary, silent, self-reflection. Here, “Gone fishin'” - along with the terms “Going down to the camp” and “Going duck hunting” - typically refers to group undertakings in which the activity of fishing, camping, or hunting is inextricably bound up with socializing. Whether you tend more toward the serious fishing or serious fun end of the spectrum, there's a spot for you in Barataria or Venice. Theophile Bourgeois (Toe-feel) has you covered in Barataria and Fred Lewis has you covered in Venice. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom.

Three Reasons for iQor's Nearshore BPO Expansion in Trinidad and Tobago

Digitally Irresistible

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2021 16:52

In this episode, we feature Sekou Alleyne, President of InvesTT in Trinidad. InvesTT is a government-run investment promotion agency. iQor has worked with this agency for six years to help set up our nearshore expansion with a sizable workforce in Trinidad, currently numbering more than 1000 people. In this episode, Sekou shares highlights about the republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and how InvesTT has been a valuable partner to iQor in setting up an award-winning customer care facility in Trinidad.  Sekou explains that Trinidad and Tobago are two islands off the coast of Venezuela under one republic. Trinidad is the larger of the two islands and is very industrialized with decades of oil and gas industry presence along with other industries. Trinidad is cosmopolitan with skyscrapers and night life. Tobago is a smaller island well known for “sun, sea, and sand.” It's a popular vacation destination in the Caribbean.    Three Factors that Attracted iQor to Set up a Contact Center in Trinidad  iQor worked with InvesTT to set up our first nearshore contact center facility in Trinidad in 2016. We were attracted to Trinidad for three reasons; 1) InvesTT's commitment to helping us establish and grow in Trinidad, 2) access to a well-educated local workforce, 3) the island's location is below the hurricane belt. Demand for nearshore customer experience services drove our search, resulting in the selection of Trinidad.   InvesTT is the investment promotion agency headed up by Sekou as president, reporting to the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The agency is responsible for attracting, retaining, and facilitating investments of direct business operations in Trinidad and Tobago. InvesTT has worked closely with iQor since 2016 by providing information that allowed us to conduct our due diligence for initial site selection and set up along with assistance in dealing with other government agencies to become operational. InvesTT has been a strategic partner to iQor since day one, aiding in the development of our nearshore growth strategy on the island.   The local workforce is well educated. The country provides residents free education, including primary, secondary, and tertiary grades. The result is a skilled labor pool with the requisite technical skills needed to support companies like iQor. Residents commonly travel to and from North America, resulting in a population that understands the North American culture, is social media savvy, and is supported by a robust technology infrastructure that enables service delivery such as iQor's outsourced customer care services.  Trinidad and Tobago's location is below the hurricane belt, which combined with a strong telecom infrastructure, allows for a high level of uptime and business continuity.   iQor currently operates in two facilities in Trinidad, Wallerfield and Barataria, with 72,000 square feet and more than 1,000 employees. Our expansion plans are well underway to add a third site in Trinidad bringing us over 120,000 square feet. The third site will open in Q4 2021. We are already experiencing significant demand for growth based on our performance and the country's attractiveness, and its people. That said, we'll continue to operate at a reduced capacity due to COVID and will continue supporting our work-at-home agents. The expansion to a third site in Trinidad is an investment we're making based on demand and the future of Trinidad and iQor's continued collaboration.   iQor has an excellent relationship with InvesTT and the Trinidad Government. We are known for being great neighbors and are focused on improving the lives of those around us and the communities where we operate. When COVID reached the island in 2020, the government quickly implemented social distancing and mask-wearing practices. We moved over 95% of our Trinidad staff to work- at- home within two weeks during the initial days of the pandemic, enabling our employees to continue to work and support the local economy. Additionally, we provided internet stipends to the team, and we continue to do so today.  In 2020, iQor Trinidad was awarded Center of the Year as number one in performance by one of our clients in customer support and sales. We competed against large competitors with nearshore and offshore operations doing the same work. This is a great accomplishment for our Trinidad team and certainly speaks to the quality of our employees and the support we receive from InvesTT in Trinidad.  A Collaborative Relationship  Sekou points out that he's worked with several people at iQor, starting with Dustin Fleming, Senior Vice President Finance, in Trinidad's initial selection. Today, Sekou works closely with the local leaders at iQor facilities, emphasizing the safety of our employees.    Trinidad's Future Is Bright   Sekou is very optimistic about our relationship. He looks forward to our continued growth in Trinidad. He is very confident that the model we have in place is mature, and it allows us to continue to expand in the region, considering the demand we are experiencing.   What Sekou Does for Fun  Sekou is native to Trinidad. He spent about half his life in Canada. He relocated back to Trinidad from Canada and enjoys family activities and spending time outdoors. Of course, he enjoys the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival during non-pandemic times. He also travels to other Caribbean islands. Additionally, Sekou enjoys educating people about Trinidad and Tobago and the opportunities available for businesses and the people to live there.   Learn more about iQor digital customer experience capabilities.   Read the blog post here. This week, hosts Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham welcome Dr. John Dale "Zach" Lea to the show to debate the merits of the Mid Barataria Sediment Diversion (MBSD), a massive coastal marsh restoration plan currently in development with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority intended to naturally renourish the Mid Barataria basin with sediment that is currently ejected from the marsh system out the channelized mouth of the Mississippi River. Dr. Lea, an agricultural economist and the "exclusive Shellevator dealer for Louisiana" believes strongly that the MBSD project will cause more harm than benefit, and argues that the economic cost to the oyster fishery in the Barataria is too great to warrant the stated benefits. Where do you think Peter and Tyler will land on this important coastal project? Find out here, only on ASPN!

On this special episode, Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham welcome Jacques Hebert and Simone Maloz to the show to introduce themselves and their show, Delta Dispatches, to the ASPN audience. Delta Dispatches has been telling the story of the Louisiana coast over a year, discussing its shoreline, its people, wildlife and jobs, and why restoring it matters. Jacques P. Hebert works as the National Audubon Society’s communications director for the Restore the Mississippi River Delta Coalition. In that capacity, Jacques helps raise awareness to Louisiana’s ongoing environmental land loss crisis, its implications on people, wildlife and the economy, and the restoration solutions available to address it. In the wake of the BP oil spill settlement, Jacques leverages public communications and outreach to build support for large-scale restoration efforts in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast. Prior to joining Audubon, Jacques worked as the Public Affairs Manager at Mother Jones in San Francisco, where he raised awareness to the news organization's reporting and helped elevate its profile. Previously, he worked for five years at Google initially in its advertising department and then on the company's corporate communications team focusing on YouTube. Jacques graduated from Dartmouth College with a dual major in Spanish and Latin American Studies. Jacques is a native son of Louisiana, having grown up in the town of Braithwaite in Plaquemines Parish, where his family had lived for generations and which has also been ground zero for coastal land loss, hurricanes, and the BP oil spill. In 2015, he was selected for and completed Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Emerging Leaders program along with other area nonprofit leaders. In 2016, Jacques participated in the Institute for Environmental Communication at Loyola University New Orleans. Simone Maloz is the Executive Director of Restore or Retreat, a non-profit coastal advocacy group working to identify and expedite the implementation of aggressive, large-scale restoration projects, Terrebonne Parish native Simone works with Restore the Mississippi River Delta on the local, state and federal levels to advocate for the needs of the disappearing Louisiana coast, specifically the Barataria and Terrebonne Basins. Since the devastating hurricanes of 2005 and the 2010 oil spill, she has also been tracking the process of the different planning efforts underway, including the Natural Resources Damage Assessment Act (NRDA), Clean Water Act Penalties, the 2012 and 2017 State Master Plan Update and the Louisiana Coastal Area Study projects, all to ensure the needs of the Barataria and Terrebonne Basins are being adequately met with the necessary sense of urgency in the face of what is at stake. She was appointed to serve on the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Coastal Protection, Restoration and Conservation in the summer of 2014, and is a member and co-chair of the Commission’s Diversion Subcommittee.

Folger Shakespeare Library: Shakespeare Unlimited

Shakespeare and his plays are woven deeply into the culture of the Caribbean, both white and black. Even after centuries of British colonial rule came to an end, Shakespeare endured, as we hear in this episode of Shakespeare Unlimited. There’s a long tradition in the British Caribbean of using Shakespeare quotations in competitions to demonstrate rhetorical skill, whether in the schoolyard or at rural village gatherings. After slavery was abolished in the British colonies, schools were established to steep the empire’s newest subjects in British literature, particularly Shakespeare, imparting British values along the way. But anti-colonialists have also claimed Shakespeare for their own, particularly THE TEMPEST and the character of Caliban. Our guests on this episode are Dr. Giselle Rampaul, a lecturer in Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad, and Dr. Barrymore A. Bogues, Director of the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University. They are interviewed by Neva Grant. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. © November 4, 2015. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster and Esther Ferington. We had help from Melissa Marquis at NPR in Washington, Courtney Coelho at Brown University, and Kerri Chandler at Wiluvbeats Studios in Barataria, Trinidad. We also want to say a special “thank you” to Fabienne Viala, a professor in the school of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Warwick in the UK. Early on in our research on this topic, Dr. Viala was uncommonly generous in offering her time and her deep understanding of this history. She also introduced us to Giselle Rampaul.

According to González Echevarría, Don Quixote's epic task within the novel is to control his madness by accepting the vanity of his dreams and the futility of his quest. The protagonist's change started with Sancho's enchantment of Dulcinea, and peaked in the cave of Montesinos. Now, he displays his deepened wisdom in the counsel to his squire on how to govern the island of Barataria. The good government of Sancho, together with the fact that the cleverest character in the second part is the steward, reflects a crumbling society: Barataria is related to the breakdown of aristocratic authority and the emergence of the common man as potential ruler. The island, too, like a mock Utopia, is a laboratory of fiction making, in which the steward, who is the author, ironically gets trapped. In a very baroque like inversion, Sancho and Don Quixote endure all the pranks from the duke and duchess with their dignity untouched, proving that the mockers are the ones finally mocked.
