Day one of the NFL Combine is in the books and several players stood out in their workouts and cases can be made for why the Cleveland Browns should be interested. Florida State's Braden Fiske dominated the defensive tackle agility testing and his age doesn't fit the Browns model but a case is mad why he could be worthy of breaking that model. The Browns may not be drafting a defensive end this cycle but if they do players like Jalyx Hunt or Marshawn Kneeland could be players that they have interest in. The Browns could be seeing a shift of power in the linebacker room as it will now be Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah's room to lead. So they will need some new blood in there. Prospects like Kalen DeLoach, Curtis Jacobs, and Jordan Magee could be guys they look at on day three or as UDFA's. #Dawgpound eBay Motors For parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. That's what head coach James Franklin said in the lead up to the Peach Bowl. Yes, the team does try to find select players to fill specific needs, but the team still believes in internal development. So on today's BWI Live Show, we're discussing which players that didn't have big roles last year, need to take that step. We're also breaking down a unique opportunity for the team's defensive players. A certain position hasn't been open for three years, but thanks to graduation, is finally open. We'll discuss how good Curtis Jacobs and Daequan Hardy were in covering the slot for Penn State. If you haven't yet, subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you don't miss any of our live and breaking news content. We'll also provide you with coaches interviews and shows featuring wrestling and basketball. Penn State slot coverage is an opportunity for a new batch of players For the past three seasons Jacobs and Hardy have split the duties as the primary slot defenders in Penn State's defense. On today's show we're talking about the article featuring these two from last week. Here's an excerpt. While Jacbos' contributions as a coverage linebacker in the flat are harder to quantify, Hardy's contributions are clear. No Big Ten cornerback had more third-down coverage snaps than Hardy over the last three seasons. Despite a rough start to the 2022 season, Hardy allowed a passer rating of just 50.9 into his coverage since 2021. No player with more than ten targets can boast such a low rating allowed, and no player saw more third-down targets than Hardy. We'll explain how the team can replace these two and how Tom Allen's defense could potentially cause some changes to the type of player filling this role. Owen Aliciene breakdown If you haven't you can check out T-Frank's Film Room on new tackle commit Owen Aliciene. The Penn State Class of 2025 prospect joined the Nittany Lions after the team's first junior day of the new year. We'll discuss his talents and where he fits in the recent run of tall tackle prospects for offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. Which Penn State players need to develop? The team is deep into the offseason conditioning program, building themselves into the team they will be for 2024. But which players are critical for the team to see grow? There are some clear holes on the roster for a young player to fill in 2024 and some positions need competition to create overall growth for the team. We'll highlight the players that weren't starters in 2023 who need to be contributors next year, such as Tony Rojas, Omari Evans and Zion Tracy. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Which young Penn State players need to develop this offseason? Penn State lost the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30.Penn State also played the game without four of its top players and saw a handful of other stars play only in the first half.In this week's edition of the Penn Stated podcast, hosts Donnie Collins (The Scranton Times-Tribune) and Sam Fremin (The Citizens Voice) review the 38-25 defeat at the hands of Ole Miss at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta with an eye toward the game's greater meaning. With Nittany Lions fans frustrated by the performance, it's worth asking: Does a game played without Olu Fashanu, Chop Robinson, Kalen King and Johnny Dixon -- and with Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Caedan Wallace playing just about a half -- tell us anything about what the Nittany Lions really were in 2023?Also, and perhaps most importantly, does it have any meaning for 2024? Or is it, as one of the hosts suggested, a glorified exhibition that ranks ahead of only the Blue-White Game in importance among games played in the last calendar year?In a landscape where opt-outs have become a major storyline outside of the College Football Playoff, does losing a New Year's Six game mean anything at all, really?Donnie and Sam also discussed the theme of the season further, the apparent lack of development of the wide receiving corps, which didn't record a catch in the Peach Bowl until the fourth quarter. The hosts discuss that position, and even got some breaking news during the recording about a top transfer target committing to the Nittany Lions who could have a major impact on the position next year. All that, and more. Including pressing discussions on...Hypothetically, would the Penn State fans who want to move on from James Franklin as head coach be welcoming to a replacement who might be eager to take the job, Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin? Why would the College Football Playoff even consider putting a Group of Five team in the 12-team championship tournament if they fall outside the top 12 in the rankings?Who will win the national championship? To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@scrantontimes.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

Allar completed 68% of his passes as the Nittany Lions kept things short and controlled. The Penn State running attack wore down another opponent with 46 carries before the backups came in the game. Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 38 carries and 121 yards in the competitive portion of the game. Penn State head coach James Franklin called his shot earlier in the week about how the game would play out. "I also think in the Big Ten you look at statistically, we play good defense around here. There's going to be games where we've got to grind it out. You guys know Iowa. This is probably going to be another one of those games where we're going to have to grind it out. It's going to be a four-quarter game," Franklin said on Tuesday. The problem for Iowa, was that Penn State was the only team dong the grinding. The Nittany Lions had four drives of ten-plus plays and another drive of eight plays, all resulting in points. The offense was unrelenting, going 4-4 on fourth down. Penn State defense snuffs out another opponent Once again, the Penn State defense set the offense up for success by smothering the Iowa offense. After an opening drive of six plays for 24 yards, Iowa didn't register another first down before Iowa put in their backups in the fourth quarter. The Penn State defense five straight three-and-outs with two fumble recoveries bracketing that performance. Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson all forced a tackle for a loss during the game, with Robinson registering his first sack of the season and Isaac putting up his second. Enjoying the win? Five Things to Watch: Defense The West Virginia Mountaineers bring a dangerous running game to Happy Valley on Saturday, and we'll break it down from the bedrock of the system to the top. Here's a snippet from this week's explanation of the running game and passing game with quarterback Garrett Greene. The zone running scheme, especially outside zone, is essential to fold into the passing conversation. A large portion of the West Virginia offense last year was built around the RPO and read-option concepts off of the running game. The outside zone is an aggressive lateral rushing attack that forces the defense to flow in one direction with the offensive line. West Virginia's line is good enough that you have to respect their ability to out-gap you up front. But off the back of this system, head coach and offensive coordinator Neal Brown pairs these secondary concepts. This causes a shearing effect on the defense, where most defenders have to follow the play. But the backside corners and safeties are still responsible for the screen game. Next, the offense adds Greene's rushing ability slows down backside pursuit from the unblocked defender as well. On today's show we'll break down these concepts with visuals and then build off of that to explain how the Mountaineers passing attack functions with Greene at quarterback. Finally, we'll explain how Chop Robinson, Kalen King, Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs and the rest of the Penn State defense can make West Virginia one-dimensional. Get ready for game day by subscribing to Blue White Illustrated. We'll be hosting a live 90-minute tailgate show with former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins three hours before each home game.  Jacobs ready to answer the questions  There's no doubt that Penn State's defense has gotten praise this offseason from local and national media. It's a talented group of players, and Jacobs says that while he's pleased with how training camp went, now is when the real fun starts.  "I'm feeling great. This is my favorite part; being able to get out there and compete good-on-good.  Now it's even better. We get to actually hit quarterbacks, get on the field, and really be violent. I'm excited to show off what this defense can do." He also gave a scouting report on the Mountaineers offense and what he's seen from the groups he focuses on.  "I think they have a really good offense; Very athletic and a great quarterback. He's good at seeing things, and he likes to take off. He's really good with his feet. Also, I always take a deep dive into running backs and tight ends; those two groups look really good," Jacobs said.  Can Penn State's speed counter West Virginia's scheme? Jacobs says that the Penn State defensive tackles, the group under the hottest spotlight this offseason, are playing with a chip on their shoulder. After a month of internal competition, the defense is ready to go up against a strong running game from West Virginia.  "I have tremendous faith in my D-line and linebackers and our front seven. We've been attacking one of the best lines in the country ourselves here at Penn State. I feel like we're ready for a challenge and to attack on Saturday." The main way they'll counter teams this year? Whether it's run or pass, Penn State's elite team speed will lead the way.  "O-linemen are mainly powerful in their box, in their framework. When you have fast guys, [they] can get on those edges and it makes it hard for those guys [linemen] to come out and get you in the space that there is on the football field. I feel like speed is tremendously important, and it can be disruptive in the run and pass game."  Breaking down zone rushing For Jacobs, defense comes down to simplifying what he sees and blocking out the noise. Whether it's read options, RPO schemes, or zone running concepts, he's watching his film and then relying on the defense rules to help him play fast. However, he explained what the West Virginia offense tries to do when they play inside and outside zone concepts.  "They want to get you out of our gap. A lot of times, that stuff is masked up by shifts and motions and all that stuff. But really, they want you to not focus on what you're seeing and get distracted by other things.  Finally, Jacobs talked about how the defense has progressed this season. He shared a quote from defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who explained how the team should play as a unit instead of trying to make plays individually. "We've only gotten better because we play for one another. We make sure that we have each other's back. Coach Manny always says you can't take money out of your teammate's pocket. You've got to know your assignment and execute your assignment so that you can make a play, but sometimes so your teammate can make a play," Jacobs said.  Listen to the full interview for all of Jacobs' comments.   Learn more about your ad choices. Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins

On Sept. 2, Penn State will storm onto Beaver Stadium for its home opener against West Virginia with a promising young offense that, someday, might be among the best in the nation. They also enter facing a much less enticing reality. That "someday" could be further down the road, while their best shot to claim a national championship is the one that stands directly in front of them, led by a defense that is ready to be counted with the nation's best.On this week's return of Penn Stated, host Donnie Collins and guest Sam Fremin of The Citizens Voice break down some of the bigger issues surrounding not just the 2023 season, but the program itself. How should Penn State -- and yes, its fans -- measure success this fall? What could this team be? And, more realistically, what is it?They'll debate which game Penn State is more likely to win in the season series against Big Ten powers Ohio State and Michigan, and discuss whether any result outside of a College Football Playoff berth is going to be satisfactory enough for those who think the Nittany Lions' time has come.Donnie also breaks down the state of the quarterback competition between Drew Allar and Beau Pribula, along with a rundown of the Northeast Pennsylvania players on the roster and their potential impacts this season. To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@timesshamrock.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

Penn State football takes the field on September 1 against West Virginia to open the 2023 season. It's a highly-anticipated year for the Nittany Lions who are an offseason favorite of the national media to push for a College Football Playoff spot. One of the key contributors to the Penn State defense is linebacker Curtis Jacobs. He joins the BWI Live YouTube show to discuss the upcoming season, along with other topics.  Join the show live at 7 pm to ask Jacobs a question! Host Thomas Frank Carr will field select questions from fans and members of the Blue White Illustrated Lions Den. Also, be sure to subscribe to BWI on YouTube so you know when we post special shows and breaking news.  Penn State, Jacobs in line for a big season.  One of the major reasons for optimism on defense is that Jacobs, a third-year player decided to return for another season at linebacker instead of opting for the NFL Draft. T-Frank and Jacobs will discuss that decision and how he arrived at it. They'll also discuss Jacob's thoughts on the team and preparation this offseason.  Jacobs has spent the offseason preparing himself mentally and physically for the upcoming season, which could be a breakout performance for the fourth-year linebacker.  “I've really dove deep into film study. I know I've been a film guy, but I really looked into NFL schemes and other teams' schemes; just trying to learn offense at this point,” Jacobs said at Lift For Life. “I've been watching a lot of pass-rush stuff too. So I've been watching a lot of Michah [Parsons] and Von Miller. I've been watching a lot of those guys and how they get to the quarterback. That's one of the most important plays in football, knocking the quarterback off the spot.” Jacobs is now ten pounds heavier than he was at this time last year, with his listed weight at 238 pounds. The veteran linebacker split time between positions last season after the emergence of freshman Abdul Carter.  Jacobs was third on the team last year with 29 solo tackles and chipped in 23 assists, according to Penn State's official stat book. He also came in third with 7.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.  Jacobs was also a standout coverage defender at both linebacker positions. According to PFF, Jacobs finished the year with a 61.0 NFL passer rating when targeted, which led the Penn State Linebackers. He also led the unit with 12 passing game stops.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

With spring football just around the corner, the BWI Daily Edition is gearing up by checking out the updated roster released after winter conditioning. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel will discuss the group's most interesting weight gains and losses and single out any players that grabbed their attention.  They'll also discuss the recent NFL Combine and which players had a good day or a bad day, depending on their performance in testing metrics. Lastly, Pickel will recap the Big Ten wrestling championships and Penn State's dominant run to another conference title. He'll also preview how the weekend set the team up for the NCAA tournament.  As always, you get a final say on what T-Frank and Pickel talk about! Join the show at 7 pm to discuss what's on your mind by joining the live chat. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable notifications, so you don't miss any live shows or breaking news.  Penn State roster Udpate One of the larger swings on the Penn State roster came at the offensive line, where several players made big jumps in overall weight. Overall the offensive line gained 255 pounds or just over 12 pounds per player. So Does that mean the team is intentionally getting bigger, like head coach James Franklin wondered out loud after the team's loss to Michigan? Or is it a normal course of growth for this time of year? T-Frank and Pickel will discuss that idea on the show and give their thoughts on how the team progressed this offseason.  Another position group that T-Frank wants to discuss is linebacker. Several Penn State stars made big jumps at that position too. What does Abdul Carter's weight gain mean for his position? The same can be said about Curtis Jacobs, who packed on some pounds during winter conditioning.  Combine testing results in poor overall showing Next, T-Frank will give his thoughts about the standout Penn State performers from the 2023 NFL Combine. He'll argue why Brenton Strange and Juice Scruggs stood out at crowded positions while Ji'Ayir Brown failed to reach several benchmarks.  Penn State Wrestling takes home the championship The Penn State wrestling team's dominance continues this year, with a regular season title and now a Big Ten Tournament title. What's more, the group sent nine contestants to the NCAA championships with their efforts this past weekend. As Pickel previously reported, the team also crowned four champions. Super senior Roman Bravo-Young and senior Aaron Brooks are now three-time Big Ten champs. 'RBY' beat Minnesota's Aaron Nagao in the 133-pound finals to cap off a perfect tournament. At 184 pounds, Brooks crushed Kaleb Romero of Ohio State 11-2 in the finals. Junior Carter Starocci is a two-time Big Ten champ at 174 pounds. He beat Nebraska's Mikey Labriola 6-2 in the finals after a 2-0 effort led him there. Finally, freshman phenom Levi Haines won his first conference crown by beating top-seeded Peyton Robb 3-1 in a thrilling sudden victory outcome. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss the show. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK Penn State got off to a rocky start in the game, trailing 10-7 after a poor punt from punter Barney Amour and an Aaron Cruikshank kick return to get Rutgers into the Penn State red zone to start a drive in the first quarter. Penn State's offense couldn't find any momentum to start the game, punting on five of its first six drives and fumbling on the other.  Thankfully for the Nittany Lions, the Penn State defense locked down the Scarlet Knights, with only 22 yards allowed after the first three drives heading into halftime. In that time, the defense also intercepted Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, forced a fumble that turned into a touchdown, and set up the offense for success. So despite only gaining 179 yards in the first half, Penn State led 28-10 going into the break. A defensive touchdown on a sack and forced fumble by linebacker Curtis Jacobs opened the lead to 38-10. Finally, the running game got going in the second half thanks to several explosive Kaytron Allen, and Nick Singleton runs.  However, the freshman of the game was once again linebacker Abdul Carter. The budding star tallied multiple quarterback pressures, a quarterback hit, a sack, and two tackles for loss.  Backup quarterback Drew Allar took the field with five minutes left in the third quarter and managed the game after that.  Learn more about your ad choices. What more can we learn about Clifford? Furthermore, can he take the next step as a player? Fitz gives his thoughts before the first game.  Outside of Clifford, he gives his assessment of the depth at quarterback and how radically different it is from a year ago.  Next, they preview the running back position and how Nick Singleton isn't the only freshman Penn State is excited to play. He and T-Frank discuss how one aspect of Kaytron Allen's game has been a revelation for the staff.  After touching on each running back, they transition to the offensive line. Is this the year? Fitz takes a page out of James Franklin's book for that answer. They go through the offensive line and give the pros and cons for the group.  From there, they discuss the receivers and which players can step up for the group to play meaningful snaps in 2022. However, the group starts with third-year player Parker Washington. Next, Fitz folds in the tight ends to the discussion because if the receivers can't find consistency, will we see more two-tight end sets? T-Frank and Fitz discuss that reality and debate who those players could be.  Finally, they transition to the defensive line. Fitz highlights the players he thinks will stand out on the defensive line at tackle and then raises his concerns about the defensive end position.  The linebackers are a polarizing group. Curtis Jacobs enters year three as the group's headliner, but beyond him, what else is there? The 2022 Penn State football season is fast approaching, so Blue White Illustrated is getting you ready with BWI Two-A-Days. Each day host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss a position group and give a season preview for fans. Today they focus on the linebackers.  The linebacker group might be the most interesting positional breakdown of any heading into the fall. On the one hand, the team has linebacker Curtis Jacobs leading the defense. But, on the other hand, Tyler Elsdon and Kobe King are fighting during camp to decide which inexperienced player will get his first start at middle linebacker. Throw in the positional ambiguity of the third linebacker spot, and the Nittany Lion fans have a wide variety of topics to discuss with the group.  T-Frank starts with the "starters" for this group, looking at Jacobs, King, and Elsdon. To start the show, T-Frank and Bauer discuss how vital that battle is in the middle of the defense. Next, T-Frank wants to know why Jacobs isn't getting the same hype as some of his predecessors despite producing more at similar points in his career than they did.  Next, the duo discusses Jonathan Sutherland's role in the defense and the nature of Manny Diaz's defense. There's still confusion about which players are playing behind Sutherland or can potentially see snaps at that linebacker spot. T-Frank assumes that only safety-type players are playing at the new "Striker" position, but he asks Bauer if he's missing something.  After discussing that position, they shift their focus to the young players at the position behind the starters. T-Franks comments on the staff's excitement in freshman Abdul Carter and wonders out loud about another player on the roster. Will Carter pass more experienced players on his way to a role in the defense? Bauer points out a critical fact that might shift the conversation.  Lastly, they wrap up the show with their X-Factors and indicate which way they think the stock is heading for the Penn State linebackers.  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State starting linebacker Curtis Jacobs joins the BWI Daily Edition for an exclusive interview. He sits down with host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss his path to his new position, how he sees the game of football, and what makes him tick. Be sure to check out both installments of the interview. T-Frank starts out by taking Jacobs back to Penn State's bowl game performance against Arkansas. Like several of his teammates, he played a new position filling in for a veteran who had opted out of the game for the NFL Draft. How comfortable was he at WILL linebacker after practicing for a month? Jacobs said it wasn't about playing the run in the tackle box but about playing every down for the defense. "Honestly, the best part of it was being able to play third down. I feel like that was a big part of my game I didn't get to show because of personnel, and I felt like that was a really big opportunity for me," he said Jacobs came off the field in favor of slot corner DaeQuan Hardy in obvious passing situations throughout last season. But how was playing a new position? Jacobs says it wasn't about playing in a new spot but keeping the same trust in his teammates, "My comfort comes from just being able to trust my teammates and I had full trust in my teammates. I would say I felt pretty comfortable, and now I'm just running with it. I feel like I've hit the ground running, and I feel like I'm in for a big season next year." Jacobs will take on the playmaking role of Will linebacker full-time next season in Manny Diaz's new scheme. He discusses the nature of that system with T-Frank, how he enjoys playing for Diaz, and how aggressive the team will be. They also discuss his fellow linebackers, Kobe King and Tyle Elsdon, who are battling for the starting middle linebacker position. Jacobs shares what he's seen from them in that endeavor and tells T-Frank a bit about who they are as people. T-Frank also brings up the topic of size and linebackers in college football. Jacobs plans on playing at 227 pounds this year, which is typically lighter than traditional linebackers. However, this isn't new to Jacobs, as this is how linebackers play in college football. T-Frank wants to know how Jacobs feels about the situation and if he thinks his style of play will hold up to the physicality of the Big Ten. Jacobs points to factors beyond weight that mean more in how a player performs on the field. They also discuss the differences between his old position (SAM Linebacker) and his new one. Jacobs tells T-Frank that he actually misses one part of his old job. Other topics of conversation include modern ways that teams are attacking linebackers. Jacobs tells T-Frank that his belief that linebackers "can't be right" because of RPO passes isn't accurate. He explains what he does to sniff out plays in that situation. Finally, they discuss Jacobs' interests off the field and what makes him tick as a person. While things are still taking shape, we have a better sense of what Penn State's defense will look like under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. The first-year Penn State coordinator spoke with the media last week, and the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, pieces together the clues to get a rough outline of some of the changes. He uses evidence from head coach James Franklin, Diaz, and linebacker Curtis Jacobs to build a sketch of the differences between the former Miami head coach and former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry. To find the differences, T-Frank starts with the similarities. First, he recaps what Franklin said about Diaz during the winter and explains how both coaches come from similar backgrounds. Then, he allows Franklin to explain the differences that Diaz is bringing to Happy Valley. Next, T-Frank fills in the context of what Franklin said with some details and examples. Lastly, he leaves you with one element that might be noticeable when watching things this spring's Blue White Game. Next, he dips into the coverage aspect of defense by asking Diaz what sort of system he believes in. The Penn State explains what he believes in and leaves a big clue about what the Nittany Lions need to be successful next fall. This nugget leads to a discussion about the transfer portal and a common thread between the Miami defense in 2021 and Penn State's current squad. T-Frank thinks that one aspect of the defensive structure will dictate what sort of coordinator Diaz is on Saturdays. This thought brings him to starting linebacker Curtis Jacobs. How is the adjustment to the new defense going? Jacobs explains what it takes to get everyone on the same page. Next, T-Frank explains why Jacobs is a crucial player in the defense next fall. It's not just that he's the most experienced linebacker returning, but his skill set is essential for Diaz's defense to thrive. T-Frank details those skills and what will likely be asked of Jacobs next fall. Lastly, T-Frank takes all of that information and outlines what he expects the new defensive coordinator to be like next season. Will he be aggressive? How will he use his coverage players? While some information is yet to gather, T-Frank expects an aggressive and attacking defense. The Penn State football team held an open practice on Wednesday night, of which BWI was present. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss what they saw and more of what they heard from Penn State head coach James Franklin, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, and linebacker Curtis Jacobs. They discuss that and then take viewers' questions on the BWI Daily mailbag edition. The first topic of conversation they start with is something asked by fans of the show that didn't make the mailbag. T-Frank and Bauer explain why there has been less talk and less evaluation of the Penn State offensive line this spring. Next, Bauer describes how the practice works and how the media is limited in some capacities by the setup in Holuba Hall. Next, they discuss the transfer portal's impact on college football rosters. It's a problem not just for Penn State but also for the rest of the country. They discuss how the offensive line has limited numbers this spring and how Penn State uses the portal to find defensive ends. Finally, T-Fanks points to immediate real-world ramifications of NIL and the transfer portal ono Penn State this spring. They discuss Penn State linebacker Curtis Jacobs's comments after practice and how he's adjusting to his new position as the Will linebacker. How has the transition gone? What is he looking for in his own game? Bauer had a chance to talk to him and gave his thoughts. Finally, they get to the viewer's questions in the BWI Mailbag. First, they discuss Penn State's linebacker situation and depth and contingency plans for injuries at key positions. Next, they discuss Franklin's comments about Hakeem Beamon from Wednesday and what they mean. Next, they have an extended conversation about the situation around guard Saleem Wormley. First, Bauer discusses how the media overlooked his injury last season and why that happened. Then, he discusses how big of an impact and how important of a player he could be for the Nittany Lions next season if he can return to his previous form. After a quick discussion about the Penn State basketball portal activity, T-Frank and Bauer discuss a long-held trope by a large section of the fanbase. Is James Franklin a great recruiter and an average coach? T-Frank challenges the notion not to defend Franklin but to deconstruct an either-or scenario that isn't realistic in college football. That conversation spins into several about philosophy, program structure, team building, and more.
