Ten Penn State Nittany Lions will run, jump, catch and participate in on-field drills in front of 32 team scouts this weekend. We're previewing the event by giving one drill that will be important for each Penn State player on today's BWI Live Show. Join us at 10 a.m. as we discuss each player's scouting profile, and break down the potential of recent Penn State Class of 2025 commit Lyrick Samuel. Finally, we'll discuss how the Penn State safety position is a perfect fit with new defensive coordinator Tom Alen. If you can't join us live, check out the show's replay on the Blue-White Illustrated YouTube Channel or embedded here in this article. One drill for each Penn State football player at the NFL Combine It's been a few years since Penn State has had a standout performance at the NFL Combine. The Nittany Lions have developed a reputation for consistently sending impressive athletes to the Combine under head coach James Franklin. We discuss what goes into that reputation and then preview which players might show out this week. Here's an excerpt from the defensive breakdown earlier this week. Adisa Isaac – broad jump There is no great test for functional strength at the Combine. Doing a max squat would be dangerous, and that doesn't even gauge explosive power as much as raw strength, which are two different things. But for an undersized defensive end like Adisa Isaac, the broad jump is a fine proxy. The broad jump measures explosive lower body power for the athlete. Isaac showed great power through contact last year and at the Senior Bowl, but putting a number to that will be informative. Expect him to stand out at the Combine in the rest of his testing drills. Offensive Players Projected top-ten pick Olu Fashanu doesn't have to do any drill he doesn't want to at the Combine because his stock is already high enough to be selective. But that doesn't mean we're not curious to learn certain things about his skills if he does participate. But the most interesting offensive athlete at the Combine is tight end Theo Johnson. The big-bodied pass-catcher needs to show he's a dynamic athlete to make up for his inconsistent blocking. Here's one area we focus on during the show. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. Then to end the show, Adam and Seth weigh in on leading scorer Kanye Clary's dismissal from the basketball program. Is it a net positive for first-year coach Mike Rhoades' program as it looks to figure out its identity? Or would it have been better off figuring out how to use Clary and Ace Baldwin Jr. in the same back court? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins

The longer you go without rules, the harder it will be to make rules. The NCAA might learn that lesson the hard way as it pursues sanctions against Tennessee for alleged recruiting violations stemming from a collective that works closely with athletes at the university in the Name, Image, Likeness realm. It's a story that affects all of college football, including Penn State, as collectives play a bigger and bigger role in attracting star athletes to the universities they choose to represent, promising cash and business opportunities. On this week's episode of the Penn Stated podcast, host Donnie Collins talks about what the Tennessee case could mean for Penn State and other major programs. But he also brings in a special guest - legendary Scranton Times-Tribune high school sports beat writer Joby Fawcett - to discuss the positives and negatives of NIL as it trickles down into the high school ranks. We know how it's likely affecting some athletes now. But, will high school sports exist in its current form in a decade or so after NIL gets done changing them, and the attitudes of high school-aged athletes and their parents?Donnie also delves into the postseason all-star games in college football, where a handful of Penn State's draft-eligible players are looking to make names for themselves in front of NFL scouts. Which one has impressed Donnie the most over the last week? That answer might surprise you.To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@scrantontimes.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

Penn State lost the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30.Penn State also played the game without four of its top players and saw a handful of other stars play only in the first half.In this week's edition of the Penn Stated podcast, hosts Donnie Collins (The Scranton Times-Tribune) and Sam Fremin (The Citizens Voice) review the 38-25 defeat at the hands of Ole Miss at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta with an eye toward the game's greater meaning. With Nittany Lions fans frustrated by the performance, it's worth asking: Does a game played without Olu Fashanu, Chop Robinson, Kalen King and Johnny Dixon -- and with Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Caedan Wallace playing just about a half -- tell us anything about what the Nittany Lions really were in 2023?Also, and perhaps most importantly, does it have any meaning for 2024? Or is it, as one of the hosts suggested, a glorified exhibition that ranks ahead of only the Blue-White Game in importance among games played in the last calendar year?In a landscape where opt-outs have become a major storyline outside of the College Football Playoff, does losing a New Year's Six game mean anything at all, really?Donnie and Sam also discussed the theme of the season further, the apparent lack of development of the wide receiving corps, which didn't record a catch in the Peach Bowl until the fourth quarter. The hosts discuss that position, and even got some breaking news during the recording about a top transfer target committing to the Nittany Lions who could have a major impact on the position next year. All that, and more. Including pressing discussions on...Hypothetically, would the Penn State fans who want to move on from James Franklin as head coach be welcoming to a replacement who might be eager to take the job, Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin? Why would the College Football Playoff even consider putting a Group of Five team in the 12-team championship tournament if they fall outside the top 12 in the rankings?Who will win the national championship? To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@scrantontimes.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

We're just hours away from the 2023 Peach Bowl and Penn State football's chance to go six-for-six and win every New Year's Six Bowl game. To do it, they'll have to beat Ole Miss, led by head coach Lane Kiffen.  In order to learn more about the team, we're connecting with an old friend. Former Blue White Illustrated reporter David Eckert joins the show to discuss Ole Miss, the team he now covers. He joins the show for the first time since his move down South to give us a better understanding of the team Penn State faces.  Penn State defense facing a balanced offense We start the show by getting to know the Ole Miss offense. Jaxson Dart is a fan favorite for his team and someone Eckert thinks Penn State fans would love. But who has the quarterback advantage? We'll discuss the matchup and how Dart operates the Ole Miss offense.  This week, Penn State defensive end Adisa Isaac assessed the offense he'll face this weekend. They bring a lot of challenging aspects to the game that don't have to with skill. "Yeah, I say definitely the tempo and the personnel. They know how to get their skill guys into space and make plays. We kind of pride ourselves on stopping the run all year, and this is a team that has some good backs that run hard and some good receivers as well. So they're pretty balanced in that aspect. So we've just got to do a good job of locking that down," Isaac said.  The running game is a focus of our conversation, as well as how Ole Miss will face off against Penn State. However, we end the conversation discussing Tre Harris and his impact on the game.  Ole Miss defense is "multiple" According to Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, the most noticeable aspect of the Ole Miss defense is their multiplicity.  "Yeah, we've been saying it all bowl prep that they're a very multiple team, play a lot of even and odd fronts. So we're going to have to be tight on communication up front, whether it's run-blocking schemes or pass protection," Allar said.  We discuss that diversity and what it might be trying to mask up front for Penn State's next opponent. Will the loss of Cedric Johnson affect that group?  Opt-in Culture Finally, we'll discuss that there are only a few opt-outs on either sideline. Penn State has several players that could opt out of the game but decided to play. The same is true for Kiffen's side, where Johnson is the only player not participating. Head coach James Franklin says that it's not by accident that Penn State is nearly at full strength.   "Yeah. I think you guys have heard me talk about this in the past. These are different times in college football, and we've worked really hard to create a relationship with our players that there can be open and honest dialogue and discussions," he said.   "We've tried to create an environment where really there's no reason for any player to opt-out. What I mean by that is all the way back to Saquon Barkley, who was being projected as a top 15 pick, there's a way to do this where the player, the family, the agents, whoever, everybody's comfortable with the plan." Today's Locked on Ole Miss podcast we talk about the terrific matchup of the Ole Miss Rebels and Lane Kiffin offense vs the Penn State Nittany Lions and James Franklin. We familiarize our self again with a Manny Diaz defense and talk about players like Chop Robinson, Adisa Isaac and Abdul Carter that Jaxson Dart, Tre Harris and Quinshon Judkins have to deal with. This match up is likely the best matchup in all of bowl season because of how good they are. In the second segment of the show we talk about Deion Smith finally committing to Ole Miss and what that means. This player was a signing with the LSU Tigers in 2021 and after his first year he academically dropped the ball. Rumors surrounded Ole Miss that he wanted to transfer there but academically he was playing catch up. He ended up at Holmes Community College and averaging 22 ypc and is the #1 JUCO player in the country. This is a major get for the Ole Miss Rebels. In our final segment of the day we talk about how the addition of Deion Smith affects the calculus of Ole Miss in the Portal at WR this season. And I do think it changes things. Unless Ole Miss can get a player of Will Sheppard's caliber I think Ole Miss will focus on the High School ranks and make Stonka Burnside and Caleb Odom the priorities. Either way the WR room in 2024 looks LOADED.  WANT MORE OLE MISS SPORTS CONTENT? Join our Subtext communityhttps://joinsubtext.com/lockedonolemiss  Follow and Subscribe to the Podcast on these platforms:

They defeated the Michigan State Spartans with a furious rally, pouring on 15 third-quarter points in the third quarter Join the BWI Live Postgame Show to discuss the game. We're breaking down the game and how Penn State used subtle tweaks to the passing game that unlocked big plays. We're live moments after the game's conclusion for 60 minutes of postgame discussion. Penn State offense finally gets its explosive plays After months of frustration and conversation, the Penn State offense finally went off against a struggling Michigan State team. During the game, the offense hit explosive plays of 60, 53, 50, and 40 yards. Drew Allar hit a 60-yard pass to Omari Evans in a full-circle moment that echoed his second pass of the season against West Virginia to begin the year. Meanwhile, Kaytron Allen ripped off two runs of 50 and 40 against the Spartan's defense to reestablish the team's big-play prowess. Nick Singleton chipped into the action with a 53-yard screen pass, with a great block from Tyler Warren. Singleton capped off his day with a 14-yard burst in the red zone during the fourth quarter. However, things were close early; the team gained 308 yards at halftime but only 13 points. Penalties and sacks in the red zone stymied the scoring opportunities early. However, Penn State eventually showed they had the firepower to knock out Michigan State. Defense dominant once again As expected, the Penn State defense was dominant once again. The starting unit pitched a shutout. The defense was relentless, with six sacks during the competitive portion of the game. Michigan State put together two potential scoring drives, but Jaylen Reed snuffed the first out with an interception. Adisa Isaac forced an intentional grounding pass from wide receiver. Alante Brown. From there, the team never mounted a threat to the Penn State defense. The starters forced seven three-and-outs and 74 yards in the game. However, injuries were a scare during the game. Defensive end Chop Robinson was stepped on during the first half's final play. JB Nelson came out of the first drive and wasn't seen again. Finally, Abdul Carter was injured and didn't return to the game. We're discussing those points and your thoughts on the Penn State offense and defense on the BWI Live Postgame Show. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. It's the final home game of the 2023 season and the last chance for Penn State to play well in front of its fans. We're looking at the five things that will help get the team, especially the offense, back on track against their opponent this weekend. The BWI Live Show will tackle the team's biggest issues, including the inconsistent passing game, maximizing the team's advantages in the trenches against Rutgers, and cracking another tough coverage scheme. We'll also look at two factors that will affect the game for the Penn State defense, including Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai. Penn State run defense on third down If there's been one consistent and alarming flaw in the Penn State defense, it's the third and long run defense. The team's Prowler Package has been susceptible to giving up third downs on the ground in obvious passing situations. We'll discuss how this is a problem and not what you think when you examine the full information set. We'll explain how defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is taking a risk with Chop Robinson, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Adisa Isaac on the field simultaneously. Next, we'll look at the Penn State passing attack, and how it might get out of the mud it's been wallowing in for most of the season. While it won't be eclectic, there are some efficiency changes for this game, and the rest of the year that it can make to take advantage of situations, formations, and schemes. We'll discuss how Penn State can take the pressure off of Drew Allar and how they can attack the Rutgers linebackers. Finally, we'll discuss how the team can run at Rutgers to maximize its chances of getting positive runs with Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton. Join the BWI Live Postgame Show immediately following the game to discuss the win and how the team is set up to face Ohio State in the defining game of the 2023 season next Saturday in Columbus. Penn State offense shakes off slow start It was another slow start by the Nittany Lions until cornerback Daequan Hardy ripped off a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown on his first return of the season. The 5-9 corner had a strong game with a pass breakup and several disruptive plays in the first half. He later capped his career day with a second punt return for a touchdown. The team also committed its first turnover on offense for the 2023 season. Injured receiver Trey Wallace returned to the lineup and got off to a rusty start. He fumbled on a slant route to give up the ball, then missed a deep pass from Allar. But the slow start quickly faded away, and Penn State scored on four straight drives to blow the game open and put things to bed early in the third quarter. Penn State's offense finally found it's explosive stride with Wallace back in the lineup. Wallace caught a shallow pass and ran for 31 yards, and then Theo Johnson finally got involved in the deep passing game. Allar connected with the 6-6 tight end on a 30-yard touchdown strike over the middle to score early in the third quarter. Johnson followed that up with an 18-yard catch and run to put Penn State up 42-0 and the starters to call it a day. Defense domiantes again Once again, the Penn State defense was beyond suffocating. This week's flavor of havoc was sacks. The team registered six of them before halftime and allowed just one net rushing yard in the shutout performance by the starters. Before the competitive portion of the game was over, UMass averaged five yards per drive. The defense also racked up 13 tackles for loss and was virtually unopposed into the backfield on run or pass plays on the afternoon. The standout performer was defensive end Adisa Isaac, who tallied 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss on the day. Join the BWI Live Postgame show as we discuss the game and preview the upcoming contest with Ohio State. Penn State takes on Ohio State in the pivotal game of the 2023 season coming up next Saturday. Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins

Penn State's defense so thoroughly dominated Iowa in the White Out last week, the numbers were difficult to believe. The helpless Hawkeyes went three-and-out -- or worse -- on eight of their 10 drives. They gained 2 total yards from the end of the first quarter until a garbage-time drive in the fourth. In a clinic on how creative, how explosive, the Nittany Lions can be, the question remains: Did the Nittany Lions set an impossible standard against a confused and overwhelmed Iowa team that came into the game unbeaten with a No. 24 ranking?Penn Stated co-hosts Donnie Collins and Sam Fremin discuss whether there's possibly more big things coming with a Nittany Lions defense that has forced nine turnovers in the last eight quarters of football this season. With the innovative Manny Diaz calling the shots and a talented corps of youngsters like Chop Robinson, Adisa Isaac and Abdul Carter implementing them, anything seems possible right now for the Nittany Lions defense.Donnie and Sam also talk about the Penn State receiving corps and its yet-undisplayed ability to make big plays, and there's a spirited debate about which team is the best in the Big Ten West division. They also talk about much more pressing matters, like nicknames and coffee. To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@scrantontimes.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

Starting quarterback Drew Allar tossed four touchdowns in the win as the Nittany Lions snuffed out the Iowa offense. We're taking your questions and comments on the show so join us on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube channel immediately following the game. Subscribe to the BWI YouTube Channel. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK Allar has another methodical night Once again, Allar's passing stats weren't explosive, with only 166 yards passing, but the sophomore quarterback tossed four touchdowns in the game. Allar completed 68% of his passes as the Nittany Lions kept things short and controlled. The Penn State running attack wore down another opponent with 46 carries before the backups came in the game. Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 38 carries and 121 yards in the competitive portion of the game. Penn State head coach James Franklin called his shot earlier in the week about how the game would play out. "I also think in the Big Ten you look at statistically, we play good defense around here. There's going to be games where we've got to grind it out. You guys know Iowa. This is probably going to be another one of those games where we're going to have to grind it out. It's going to be a four-quarter game," Franklin said on Tuesday. The problem for Iowa, was that Penn State was the only team dong the grinding. The Nittany Lions had four drives of ten-plus plays and another drive of eight plays, all resulting in points. The offense was unrelenting, going 4-4 on fourth down. Penn State defense snuffs out another opponent Once again, the Penn State defense set the offense up for success by smothering the Iowa offense. After an opening drive of six plays for 24 yards, Iowa didn't register another first down before Iowa put in their backups in the fourth quarter. The Penn State defense five straight three-and-outs with two fumble recoveries bracketing that performance. Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson all forced a tackle for a loss during the game, with Robinson registering his first sack of the season and Isaac putting up his second. Enjoying the win? Penn State did what it set out to do in the Rose Bowl.It sent a slew of players who meant so much to the program's past out in the best possible fashion, with embattled quarterback Sean Clifford absorbing a standing ovation from the Nittany Lions faithful in Pasadena after a near-perfect final performance highlighting that.As the Clifford era ended, the Drew Allar reign as starting quarterback began, and for as promising as most around the Penn State program feel that time can be, it does bring its own set of questions.Penn Stated host Donnie Collins wraps up the 2022 season with a look at Clifford's stirring performance, and what the win in the Rose Bowl will mean for a Penn State team that suddenly has some national momentum with the 2023 campaign still eight months from its dawn. What has the Rose Bowl, and a week's worth of decisions on whether to pursue NFL dreams, taught us about what's possible in 2023? And how much pressure will be on Allar, Penn State's freshman phenom, to guide the offense?Donnie also delves into the folly of putting too much stock into season-ending polls like the Associated Press poll, which ranked Penn State at No. 7 to conclude the season. And if you think there have been lopsided College Football Playoff games in recent years, just wait until you get a load of the semifinals and finals of the 12-team tournament come 2024.To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@timesshamrock.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

Penn State football season never ends despite the 2022 season ending a week ago. Now, the team is in the thick of the transfer portal window, trying to secure the talent for next year's run at a Big Ten Championship and beyond. The BWI Live show will discuss the latest news on YouTube to get fans up-to-date on the latest roster moves at 8 pm. Join the show and ask your questions of host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK The biggest news this weekend is that defensive end Adisa Isaac will return to Penn State next season. According to PFF, the redshirt junior defensive end put together a bounce-back season for the Nittany Lions with 36 pressures, four sacks, and eight quarterback hits. So what does his presence on the roster mean for the defense? And what does he hope to get out of returning to Manny Diaz's scheme? The panel of experts will discuss that and more. But Isaac's return isn't the only good news for Penn State this week. That's because defensive tackle D'Von Ellies followed up behind his teammate on Monday with the news that he'll also be returning. Penn State's search for a defensive tackle in the transfer portal has been slow, so the trio will discuss how Ellies can impact the depth chart next year.  Finally, one player isn't coming back next year. Right tackle Bryce Effner decided to step away from football after multiple injuries during his college career. Penn State has been looking for tackles in the portal and in recruiting, so how does Effner's absence affect the team next year? T-Frank and Bauer will discuss how that position will shake out next spring.  Lastly, they'll look at how Penn State has been able to retain critical players from both the NFL and leaving via the transfer portal. What are the factors driving players to return and not leave? Is this a sign that something special is brewing in Happy Valley?  Despite that success, the portal hasn't been kind to the Nittany Lions' efforts at bringing in talent. They've lost out on several top targets, including Monday, when two players announced that they were transferring to other schools.  Penn State football got a lot of good news in player retention this weekend. Join BWI Live at 8 pm to discuss who's returning to Penn State. Finally, they'll discuss the national championship game and the notion that you need an elite quarterback to make the college football playoff.  Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State faces Purdue Thursday night at 8 pm and Blue White Illustrated is getting you ready for the game by dissecting the Penn State depth chart. Host of the BWI Daily Edition and film analyst, Thomas Frank Carr. takes you through each position and gives you a preview of what's to come tomorrow night. He starts with the quarterbacks and starter Sean Clifford, before working to the running backs and where Nick Singleton fits into the roster. From there he explains how the receiver room will shake out with only five players that Penn State feels comfortable with on the field. How does that change what Mitchell Tinsley and Parker Washington do on the field? He explains. Next he works through the offensive line and goes over what head coach James Franklin said about the interior linemen and how that group will play out over the course of the season. Hunter Nourzad, Landon Tengwall and Saleem Wormley all will play, but in what order? He finishes off the offense with how he thinks Tyler Warren will fit into the lineup at tight end. Next, he shifts to the defensive side of the football to look at the defensive line. Hakeem Beamon makes his return to the field after his absence in 2021 but how will the rest of the depth at that position shake out? T-Frank focuses there and then shifts to Adisa Isaac and the defensive ends. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs takes the spotlight in the middle of the field before T-Frank shines a light on the cornerbacks. While plenty was made of the training camp that Johnny Dixon had, T-Frank focuses on starter Joey Porter Jr. Finally, he looks at the safety position and how Tig Brown will perform and the competition between Keaton Ellis and Zakee Wheatley. We're one week away from the start of the 2022 season for Penn State football. To get fans ready for the upcoming festivities, the BWI Daily Edition is taking questions from viewers of the show. If you'd like to get your question on the show, the best way is to sign up for Blue White Illustrated and access the Lions Den Message Board. Sign up for just one dollar and get 12 months of insider access.   Today, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel answer questions ranging from Penn State's sack total in 2022 to whether or not transfer Chop Robinson will play linebacker.  They start the show with a question from a message board member about the plan of attack for the Penn State defense. After years of sack totals that led the nation, Penn State's defense took a step backward last year in that category. Will new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and starting defensive end Adisa Isaac surpass the numbers from last season? And can anyone replace what Arnold Ebikeite did for the team? First, T-Frank and Pickel set the scene with what they know about Diaz's approach. Next, they give a prediction of how Penn State would exceed those numbers in 2022. Also, T-Frank points out the need for a player, or players, to set up and provide a replicable presence of what Ebiketie did last year for Penn State.  Next, they discuss Penn State's decision to play Olu Fashanu and Landon Tengwall beside one another on the left side of the line. Is there a reason for that? T-Frank gets into the history of offensive line skills and where coaches have traditionally played players with specific abilities. Next, he explains how all of that has changed over time and what skills are needed in a modern football game.  From there, they dive into a discussion about Purdue and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. Does he have additional insight into the Boilermakers after spending several seasons there as a coach? T-Frank and Pickel debate the merits of that thought.  The duo covers other viewers' topics, such as where Maryland transfer Chop Robinson will play this fall. T-Frank explains the difference between Penn State's linebacker room this year and in previous years. The commenter also suggests that Alabama has 250-pound linebackers and cites that as a source of weakness for Penn State. T-Frank tries to dispel this myth by explaining the difference between an edge rusher and an off-ball linebacker.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins

His head coaching tenure at his alma mater didn't last long, but Manny Diaz's work as a defensive coordinator has been stellar. His defenses at programs like Texas, Mississippi State and Miami consistently were among the best in the nation at forcing turnovers and creating havoc in the backfield. Now, the former Hurricanes boss is trying to resurrect his career as a head coaching prospect by leading a stacked Penn State defense to greater heights. As the 2022 season preview continues on Penn Stated, host Donnie Collins talks about why Happy Valley could be the perfect landing spot for Diaz, and why the Nittany Lions should be among the nation's top defenses this fall.

Penn State football held an open practice on Wednesday night before head coach James Franklin and several members of the team and staff spoke with the media afterward. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss what they saw and heard last night before opening the BWI Daily mailbag and answer questions from fans.  Bauer and T-Frank start by offering their impressions of practice and what Franklin said when speaking to media members after practice. Bauer points to the young players and their development so far. He comments on Franklin's assertion that the group collectively "hit a wall" in installation this week. T-Frank picks up on that thread and points to the Nittany Lion's Week one matchup with Purdue and how important it is for the team to be ready early in the season.  Meanwhile, T-Frank focused on the players returning from injury and how they are progressing in the second week of camp. He observed defensive linemen PJ Mustipher and Adisa Isaac going through drills and gives his feedback. Next, they discuss Bauer's conversation with Ji'Ayir Brown and how the senior safety discussed his fellow teammates in the secondary. Does he see each of them progressing in the necessary areas? And does Bauer believe that to be the case if he does?  After wrapping up with some final thoughts, the pair moves on to the mailbag portion of the show. The first question deals with Penn State's other freshman running back. How much are fans or media overlooking four-star freshman Kaytron Allen? Bauer rejects the notion that Blue White Illustrated has overlooked Allen but details what he's heard that indicates the question is correct in spirit.  They also take on the interior of the offensive line and the position battle between Hunter Nourzad and Sal Wormley. Who is the starter? Which players are trying to get snaps where? T-Frank pushes the conversation past Wormely and Nourzad to include center Juice Scruggs and left guard Landon Tengwall.  Bauer and T-Frank also discuss the intricacies of the new Big Ten media right deal from both a football and basketball perspective. Does college basketball in the Big Ten take a hit with the move away from ESPN? T-Frank wonders aloud how television stations that don't have four of five dedicated channels like ESPN will broadcast games. He speculates that streaming could be a future but Bauer points to the reality of the situation.  Next, they tackle the new deal from a football angle. What happens to the White Out now that Fox has the rights to marquee games? Fox's plan of playing big games at noon ruins the atmosphere of one of the iconic scenes in sports. Bauer has a strong opinion on the type of question asked, while T-Frank enjoys a moment speculating.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Penn State football is counting on several familiar faces returning from injury to power its defensive line for the 2022 season. But, with the addition of some exciting new faces, will this group hit the heights of their potential? Or will there be too many 'ifs' for this group to succeed? The BWI Daily edition tackles the Penn State defensive line in today's season preview.  Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Baur start at the top with Penn State's need to replace second-round pick Arnold Ebiketie's production from last season. Additionally, senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher is returning from injury. His timeline back to full strength is a key part of the equation. They discuss how likely it is that Mustipher and defensive end Adisa Isaac will play well this fall. Next, T-Frank introduces viewers to the starting defensive line, with even more questions outside of Isaac and Mustipher. Nick Tarburton returns to his role from last season, while Hakeem Beamon returns from a non-injury absence in 2021.  Next, T-Frank introduces the rest of the depth players and the new faces to the defensive line this fall. He asks Bauer how long it will take for Penn State's starting defensive line to change from what it is now. Through that conversation, Bauer and T-Frank bring attention to Penn State's depth players, such as Coziah Izzard and Dvon Ellies. Those to players struggled to fill in for Mustipher last season. Finally, the duo considers if things can lead to a more positive outcome this fall.  Finally, they dive into the new players for Penn State. Five-star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, transfer Chop Robinson, and freshman defensive tackle Zane Durant have impressed this offseason in one form or fashion. T-Frank and Bauer discuss the possibility of all of them playing meaningful roles in the fall.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

BWI Daily: Penn State strikes out in portal at defensive end

Penn State football got bad news this week from the transfer portal. Three of their top defensive end targets, Gabriel and Grayson Murphy of North Texas and Jordan Domineck of Gerogia Tech elected to go elsewhere. The twin pass rushers form North Texas chose UCLA as their transfer destination, while Domineck picked Arkansas over Penn State. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, breaks down the sting factor of each decision, then explains what else is out there. After that, he looks at the roster to try and find solutions to the Nittany Lion's problem at d-end. First, T-Frank discusses why Domineck isn't a massive loss for Penn State. He doesn't think that the one-time Yellowjacket was a great fit given Penn State's need at the position and Domineck's skillset. However, Domineck is an excellent example of the type of players left in the portal that Penn State has to choose from, so he dives into the numbers and shares what he knows about the senior defensive end. After wrapping up his thoughts on Domineck, T-Frank explains why the Murphy twins are the more considerable loss. He explains the confusion about their positional fit and why he thought they were more fit for Penn State, given the talent already on the roster. He points out critical metrics in the profile from PFF and how they could have helped fill a void. Next, T-Frank describes the game of TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis. The rising senior took a step back last season as Domineck did. But just like the Georiga Tech pass rusher, there's an explanation. First, he dives into the stable and unstable metrics of Mathis' data from PFF and then provides context with his film observations. Penn State is looking for a defensive end in the portal because of a deficiency of one key element in the room. The Nittany Lions aren't lacking quality talent, and T-Frank goes through the roster of players and how they can help the team. He explains why Adisa Isaac is so important but why he likely can't do it alone. To fix the problem, Penn State has one final solution. That player is freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton. T-Frank explains how he's come around to the idea of the freshman being a major factor next fall, despite his hesitance to place too much pressure on first-year players. On Thursday, Penn State football held their annual max testing day open to the media. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel were at Holuba Hall to take in the sights and sounds. Pickel starts by giving you his general impressions of the day and the environment in the makeshift weight room. Penn State is undergoing major renovations to its weight-lifting facility, so the team set up a makeshift quarter in Holuba Hall. What did Pickel think of the situation, and how the team responded? Next, he gives you who he thought was notable during the lifting session. T-Frank then brings up two freshmen in running back Nick Singleton and defensive tackle Zane Durant. New strength coach Chuck Losey singled out two players as having exceptional winter conditioning workouts among the first-year players. Then, he asks Greg to fill listeners in on what Losey had to say about the young quarterbacks who enrolled in January. T-Frank follows up with his impressions of the young gunslingers during his evaluation process. He thinks what Losey said should give fans even more hope about the future of five-star quarterback Drew Allar. Next, Pickel fills T-Frank in on what he saw from Penn State's injured or absent players in 2021. Hakeem Beamon, Adisa Isaac, and PJ Mustipher were all at the liftings session, and Pickel gave his thoughts about what they looked like in that setting. While the details about Mustipher's injury aren't precise, T-Frank thinks he has a good idea of the timeline for his return based on what he saw on Thursday. They shift to the young defensive linemen that lifted on Thursday because T-Frank spent a good bit of time watching them lift. Fatorma Mulbah and Jordan van den Berg both drew praise from Losey, and T-Frank now thinks they can be contributors this spring at the tackle position. Along with his observations of Amin Vanover's build, that gives some insight into the depth and talent this spring. However, Pickel disagrees and gives his reason why. After that, they shift to Penn State's young offensive line and discuss Olu Fashanu and Landon Tengwall. How did they look? T-Frank and Pickel discuss what they saw from each. Finally, they wrap up the show with a preview of the Big Ten Wrestling Tournament, which is coming up this weekend. Penn State may be the favorite to win the tournament, but Pickel thinks it won't be a walk in the park. He details the areas that Penn State needs to get support, the key wrestlers, and highlights matchups that everyone should hope they get to see in the finals. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices.
