On February 22, 2024, historians Cassandra Good and Carolyn Eastman presented a lecture on the Washington family, celebrity, and the development of the new United States. While it's widely known that George and Martha Washington never had children of their own, few are aware that they raised children together. In Good's book First Family, we see Washington as a father figure and are introduced to the children he helped raise, tracing their complicated roles in American history. The children of Martha Washington's son by her first marriage—Eliza, Patty, Nelly and Wash Custis—were born into life in the public eye, well-known as George Washington's family and keepers of his legacy. By turns petty and powerful, glamorous and cruel, the Custises used Washington as a means to enhance their own power and status. As enslavers committed to the American empire, the Custis family embodied the failures of the American experiment that finally exploded into civil war—all the while being celebrities in a soap opera of their own making. Cassandra Good is a writer and historian focused on gender and politics in early America who currently serves as Associate Professor of History at Marymount University. She is the author of the prize-winning Founding Friendships: Friendships between Men and Women in the Early American Republic and her newest book, First Family: George Washington's Heirs and the Making of America. Carolyn Eastman is an historian of early America with special interest in eighteenth and nineteenth-century histories of political culture, the media, and gender. She is Professor of History at Virginia Commonwealth University and the author most recently of the award-winning The Strange Genius of Mr. O: The United States' First Forgotten Celebrity. The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.

Mrs. Custis said, “My recommendation would be to split precincts that are larger than 3500 active registered voters in any one political party, in a precinct, in such a way that would create the least number of ballot styles.” Supervisor Mallory stated, “I appreciate you working with all parties, Republican, Democrat, Independent, and Libertarian. George Washington Parke Custis was raised at Mount Vernon by George and Martha Washington. Young “Wash” appears in Edward Savage's 1789 painting of the first presidential family, his small hand placed symbolically on a globe. He would later mark the national landscape by building Arlington House on the Potomac. A poor student, he emerged as an agricultural reformer and sought-after Federalist orator. He championed the plights of Irish Americans and war veterans. An important memoirist who knew the first fifteen presidents, he wrote well-received theatrical works and produced paintings rich in historical detail. In inheriting much of the vast Custis fortune, he also became the enslaver of more than 200 persons. The slow march toward their emancipation became a pivotal struggle of his life, particularly after his daughter's 1831 marriage to Robert E. Lee. Charles S. Clark's first full-length biography of Custis offers a twenty-first-century reappraisal of a unique life that bridged the American Revolution and the Civil War. As part of this lecture on May 19, 2022, Clark presented portraits, documents, and photographs, including relevant images not in the book. Charles S. Clark, a retired journalist. A native of Arlington, Virginia, he continues to write the weekly “Our Man in Arlington” column for the Falls Church News-Press. In July 2019, he retired as senior correspondent for Government Executive Media Group, part of Atlantic Media. He previously has worked as an editor or writer for The Washington Post, Congressional Quarterly, National Journal, and Time-Life Books. He is the author of several books, including Arlington County Chronicles; Hidden History of Arlington County; Lost Arlington County; and, most recently, George Washington Parke Custis: A Rarefied Life in America's First Family. Intertwined: The Enslaved Community at George Washington’s Mount Vernon
In Intertwined Stories, we're taking a deeper dive into the history behind the podcast Intertwined: The Enslaved Community at George Washington's Mount Vernon by bringing you extended versions of some of the interviews with the series' contributors. In Episode 6 of Intertwined, we began to explore what happened to the enslaved community after January 1, 1801, the day that Martha Washington emancipated the people once enslaved by her late husband. That day transformed the community forever. While it meant freedom for the people George Washington enslaved, it meant continued enslavement for the people owned by the estate of Martha's first husband. She had no power to free the latter, and her death a year later fractured the community further still. To help us understand how and why, and what it meant for families, we turned to Dr. Cassandra Good, who is an Assistant Professor of History at Marymount University, and a leading scholar on the Washington and Custis families in the early United States. Jim Ambuske sat in the host's chair for our conversation with Dr. Good, and was joined by Intertwined's co-creator Jeanette Patrick, along with Curt Dhal, our lead producer. We start off with the events of January 1, 1801, a day of joy, and a day of sorrow, before more about what we know happened to these families, and just how research remains to be done. Intertwined is narrated by Brenda Parker and is a production of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and CD Squared. Full transcripts, show notes, and bibliographies for Intertwined are available at www.georgewashingtonpodcast.com.

After the Supreme Court ruled that Custis Lee was the legal owner of Arlington and the US Government was forced to give the property back, how did it end up back in government hands? Custis Coleman left his family on the east coast to follow his passion – training bird dogs and hunting wild birds in America's western mountains. He shares his introduction to dogs and hunting, his journey hunting across America, the value of mentors, and the path he's taken to achieve his life goals. We start off talking about birthday etiquette because it just might be one of our hosts birthdays today (well not anymore, on the day we recorded), which naturally leads into an extended discussion about Kevin Bacon. We are joined at (12:26) by EX2 Adventures owner Andy Bacon who tells us that he has heard the Kevin Bacon question before (which should not be shocking for a guy named Chris Farley but what can we say). At (15:26) we ask about the history of EX2 and the journey that lead Andy to that position. At (20:29) we talk about how 2020 changed things for their company and at (23:58) we asked how their customers responded to these forced changes and then discuss the unfortunate circumstances some of their vendors found themselves in. At (28:23) we talk about the virtual races this spring and then the recent in person Rosaryville Half Marathon/10k, the safety measures that they had to put in place and the feedback response from the race participants. At (42:30) we hear about their upcoming race schedule which includes two more in-person events. We are back at (47:25) to wrap the interview and at (51:10) we announce the elimination of the Mens Track and Field programs at William and Mary. At (52:37) former PTN guest John Kelly completes an amazing feat, a Grand Round Project and at (54:40) Ryan Hall runs his first ultra-marathon. At (57:22) we have a couple of Arlington stories, the Arlington biker who mooned people on the Custis trail is finally apprehended, and then at (1:02:37) Docs takes us on a journey with the Bridges of Arlington County. At (1:09:09) Docs takes us off agenda to tell a story about a recent run in Arlington County. We close out at (1:17:38) with a couple of PTNish stories, a woman who runs with dogs ran every street in the Florida Keys and then we revisit the Bear story from last week for Docs.
The Syphax Family has deep historic ties to Mount Vernon and other sites of enslavement in Virginia. In 1821, Charles Syphax, an enslaved man at Arlington House in Northern Virginia, married Maria Carter, the daughter of a woman enslaved at Mount Vernon. Charles was the inherited property of George Washington Parke Custis, Martha Washington's grandson. And there is very strong evidence that the woman that Charles married, Maria, was Custis's daughter. On today's episode, you'll learn more about the fascinating history of the Syphax Family and its connections to Mount Vernon from Steve Hammond. Hammond is a Genealogist, Family Historian, and Syphax descendent who has spent decades reconstructing the Syphax family's history. He recently joined Brenda Parker, Mount Vernon's African American Interpretation and Special Projects Coordinator, on a live stream to discuss his family's story. We're happy to bring her conversation with Hammond to the podcast. Be sure to check out the documents Hammond and Parker discuss during the program. About Our Guest: Steve Hammond is a descendent of the Syphax Family. He retired from the United States Department of Interior after many years of service. A genealogist and family historian, Hammond has spent decades researching, writing, and lecturing about the Syphax Family and their place in Virginia history. About Our Guest Host: Brenda Parker is Mount Vernon's African American Interpretation and Special Projects Coordinator. Trained in performative arts, Parker interprets some of the women enslaved at Mount Vernon during George Washington's era, including Caroline Branham.
