It's pretty tough to follow mainstream media without subjecting yourself to industrial-strength brainwashing. Monetary policy affects anyone who uses money, so it's strange how few people spend much time contemplating it. Robert E. Wright provides some needed historical perspective on how Imperial monetary policy helped drive America's move toward independence. No one enjoys suffering, yet it's an inescapable part of life. Paul Rosenberg explains why suffering is required if you're going to live in any way other than what those in authority prescribe. While we were celebrating our independence, a federal judge issued a decisive smackdown to federal agencies that seek to collude with social media companies to create a Ministry of Truth. If backdoor censorship is something that concerns you, this is some very good news. You may not think of yourself as a revolutionary. It's Time to Start Practicing Eating on the Cheap

The Late Prepper with JD Rucker

When I was in college, then later as a struggling new father and husband, we learned to eat very inexpensively. There were weeks when I could get by on under $10 with Ramen noodles (the Dollar Store often had them at $0.10 a package), cheap fresh veggies (a cucumber was practically a full meal for less than a quarter), and generic packages of processed meat. It's a lot harder to do that today with inflation and growing food scarcity, but here's the thing. If the crap hits the fan in any of an assortment of highly possible ways, many of us will be stuck trying to feed our families without the resources to do so very well.Eating insufficient amounts of food can harm us physically. But even those who have stored away emergency food or are living lifestyles that allows them to produce their own may find themselves with a different challenge. There can be psychological repercussions from major dietary changes. You or members of your family may find eating beans and rice every day drives you a little bonkers.I am hopeful that the current trajectory of the nation and the world can be reversed, but I'm not going to sit around and assume it will all end well. Knowing this, we are currently practicing “lean weeks” in which we live off the survival food we have rather than ordering out or getting fresh food from the grocery store.I discussed this a bit on today's podcast. I referenced this article by Daisy Luther at The Organic Prepper:Rock-Bottom Meal Plan for Those Weeks When Money Is TightThings are tough in America and they're likely to get tougher. Many of us are forced to reallocate our money from one necessity to another and often, the thing that suffers first is our diets. If times are tight, you might find this article helpful. It's a meal plan created from recipes and strategies in my new paperback, What to Eat When You're Broke. We released this in PDF format recently and readers loved it. We got so many requests to put it in hard copy format that we couldn't say no! So, it's available on Amazon now as a paperback. The recipes in this article are all included in the book, which I'm selling just above cost. I hope you enjoy it, and please, give us a review on Amazon to help more people to see it when they're searching for a way to feed their family during difficult times.Flat Broke Meal PlanThis meal plan is per person per week. Multiply it by the number of people in your family. I've tried to make it as varied as possible, and there are a few things included that are not the cheapest on the market. They've been added for nutrient value.Obviously, if there are allergies or foods that your family won't eat, feel free to substitute.I shouldn't need to say this, but it's impossible to write one meal plan that will work for every single reader. If you are vegan, gluten-free, diabetic, suffer from food allergies, eat keto, or strictly follow a particular nutritional lifestyle, this may not work for you. With that being said, let's look at our menu! Stars * indicate that the full recipe is available in the book and you might also have your own recipes for these items.BreakfastDay 1: Oatmeal with brown sugar and bananaDay 2: Cornbread* with butter and jamDay 3: Leftover cornbread, sliced and heated with a butter and brown sugar drizzleDay 4: Peanut butter and crackers, appleDay 5: Rice cooked with milk, brown sugar, and cinnamonDay 6: Biscuits and gravy*Day 7: Scrambled eggs and toast OR homemade pancakes with fruitLunchDay 1: PB&J, appleDay 2: Pasta salad with tuna* (or canned chicken)Day 3: Bean burritoDay 4: Tomato soup* and crackersDay 5: Cold peanut butter noodles with shredded cabbage*Day 6: Tortilla pizzas*Day 7: LeftoversDinnerDay 1: Beef and vegetable soup* with frybread*Day 2: Baked beans with mac and cheese (canned and boxed easy meal for busy days)Day 3: Fried Gnocchi* with canned marinara sauceDay 4: Crockpot white chicken chili*Day 5: Pasta with marinara sauce and parmesan cheese (add ground meat if it's in the budget)Day 6: Homemade pizza*Day 7: Ham (slice an inexpensive canned ham or picnic ham and use the leftover for split pea soup), scalloped potatoes*, Christmas beans*Six quick tipsHere are some ideas to make the meals more filling if this menu leaves you feeling hungry.1.) Just add bread – whether it's toast from grocery-store sliced bread, fresh homemade bread, frybread, or cornbread, adding some bread for sopping up sauces and broth makes meals feel more satisfying.2.) Add more carbs – rice or pasta makes everything go a bit further.3.) Add beans for more protein. When you're making soup or chili, add one more can of beans to the pot.4.) Baked potatoes make everything better. Looking for a cheap, filling, and tasty side? You can't beat a baked potato. Top it with butter, sour cream or plain yogurt, and chopped green onion. Eating the skin adds fiber and other nutrients to your diet.5.) Add cheap fruit. Bananas and bagged apples tend to be the least expensive fruit. Add one serving per meal to make it more filling and finish off on a sweeter note.6.) Focus most of your money on one meal per day. If you fill up on less expensive items for breakfast and lunch, you can swing a better and more filling dinner. This menu assumes that you probably have the basics in your kitchen, such as seasonings, spices, sugar, and cooking oil. In fact, you probably have much more than that. When I've reverted to this menu I am generally able to get very minimal groceries because I have plenty of canned goods and dry goods in my pantry. This just provides me with a great way to use them!Don't miss out on the paperback!Help us make it to the top of the charts on Amazon by grabbing your copy this weekend! Your purchase means so much to me!As well, please do me a favor and leave a quick review if you feel I've earned five stars. Doing this ensures that people searching for a book like this are able to find mine and it makes an enormous difference in sales.I really believe that this book can help you (or someone you know who needs it) to get through hard times. In it, I share many of the strategies that allowed me to keep my children fed when I was a flat-broke single mama. Those times were difficult indeed, but my girls actually look back on that food and consider it their comfort food today. Most of the recipes require little in the way of hands-on time, because, in addition to being broke, I was also working full time, then chauffeuring my daughters to various places after I got off work.  I had a household to manage alone, laundry to do, and other requirements on my time so spending hours in the kitchen simply wasn't an option. If you have more time, you can cut even more money off these recipes by making each component from scratch. Here's the table of contents. I tried to make the book a lot of fun!* Introduction* Frugalicious Philosophies* Flat Broke Grocery Shopping* Basic Batches* Ultimate Frugal Formulas* Cheap Eats* Pantry Raid* What a Crock* Food with a Future* Love Your Leftovers* Seasonal Savings* Lazy ala Daisy* About the AuthorI hope you enjoy What to Eat When You're Broke! At the same time, we recently dodged one of the biggest potential dangers in many years. J.R. Dunn explains the solar apocalypse that was narrowly avoided a couple of weeks ago. I highly recommend Space Weather News as a resource. What's the worst kind of prison? Josh Klenoff says it's the one you don't know you're in. Like the one the World Economic Forum is quietly building all around us. Here's an interesting sign of the times: squatters are increasingly taking over homes across the U.S. and some experts are saying there's no end in sight. If you need a story to help restore your faith in humankind, Lawrence W. Reed has a great one. It's also a great lesson on how to get the most out of others. Having to choose between being truthful and being popular can be a challenge. Dan Sanchez spells out the reasons why unpopular truths need to be told and why freedom needs fearless truth-tellers. Speaking of truth-tellers, this segment from Matt Walsh is a simple and direct response to trans activists who seem to have forgotten that the pushback they're getting is the result of a fight they chose to start. The purveyors of the Jan 6 "insurrection" narrative are pushing back hard against Tucker Carlson and the video footage that casts serious doubts on their narrative. Daisy Luther asks what many of us are thinking: Do election outcomes mean anything if we've lost faith in the voting process? A 2022 study of ivermectin claims to show that the drug is useless for treating covid. The Practical Prepper: A modern conversation about preparedness, survival and being self reliant

As we have settled into 2022 a little bit, now is a good time to step back and take a look at what's left to do. In today's episode we speak with Daisy Luther, the founder and publisher of 3 websites: The Organic Prepper, The Frugalite, and Preppers Daily News.  Daisy has more than 1 bug out bag. She shares all of the the best advice when it comes to prepping kits and bug out bags. Her actual bug out bag is unique in that she only carries what she absolutely needs. For example, she doesn't carry a stove because she can build something easily on the go if needed. You don't need the most expensive bells and whistles. What is the minimum, most basic equipment you need? Pro Tip: always have a water filter in your purse! Daisy says, they're so tiny you can fit it easily and you never know when you'll need one.  Daisy's has a very humble beginning in her prepping journey. She shares her story and speaks to preparing for your own lifestyle and the changes that could occur to it. Life can change on a dime and if you're not ready for it, life can get difficult.  Where is the line between hoarding and smart prepping? How do you stay organized, especially when you live in a small place? She gives a few great tips on how to organize your stash.  When it comes down to it, it's all about adaptability and self-reliance.  You can't prevent a disaster, but you can certainly be prepared for it. People who question what those in power are telling them should be shunned by responsible members of society, right? Nope. James Bovard explains why those questions are well-founded--especially in the case of Covid and corrupt federal statistics. This is a great time of year for those of us who choose to make self-reliance a priority. Daisy Luther has a timely list of what to buy at the after-Christmas sales. This is a great time to stock up on things you'll be needing next year. The sound of children at play is one of the best things you'll ever hear. That play time may be more important than we think. Lenore Skenazy spells out what kids learn when they are 'just' playing. Jeff Minnick's article on three steps toward raising tough kids is a worthwhile read. It reminded me of how my dad taught me to swim by throwing me into a lake. Getting the hang of swimming came pretty easy but getting out of the gunnysack was downright scary. Did the president just inadvertently end the pandemic? That's the question asked by Graham Dockery after Biden admitted that "there is no federal solution" to Covid and that "it's up to the states" to figure it out. This one is going to make some folks uncomfortable but it's a topic that needs examination. Tom Mullen makes a strong case for why the Pledge of Allegiance is un-American, even if the words seem patriotic. This past year has seen a very clear line drawn between parents and government school bureaucrats. Two questions that are worth a closer look: 1. Just what is education? and 2. Is there a plot to push parents out of education? www.thebryanhydeshow.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

The other day, I used the term "panarchy" and caught some of my listeners off guard. It's time to explore the difference between being free to choose and being forced to choose between artificially limited options when it comes to your governance. If you want a down and dirty explanation of the blessings of panarchy, no one explains it more succinctly than Paul Rosenberg. Look around you and you'll notice that people in authority are panicking. Not because of the latest Covid varient (although that's the excuse they're using) but because they know their power over the public is waning. This is why the media drumbeat of fear is intensifying by the minute. Paul Krause makes a timely plea that we don't let them scare our freedoms away. As much as I'm tempted to pound the pulpit and start thundering, I get the sense that this is the time to speak as calmly and carefully as possible about the latest variant. That's when I'm grateful for writers like Daisy Luther, who notes that Omicron is a perfectly timed variant to scare the unruly back into submission. That's when I'm grateful for writers like Daisy Luther, who notes that Omicron is a perfectly timed variant to scare the unruly back into submission. We all have bad habits. My least favorite bad habit is that I swear. After reading Annie Holmquist's latest essay on pushing the pause button on profanity, my resolve to do better is renewed. The idea that the U.S. is becoming more like the former Soviet Union while Russia is reclaiming its Christian heritage is a difficult thought for some to consider. Anthony Esolen points out some of the hard truths about how our enemies wait as we destroy ourselves. Like most people who aren't looking for an excuse to riot and run feral, I was relieved when Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted. There are some lessons to be learned from his experience and one of the biggest ones is outlined by attorney George Parry, who warns Kyle--and the rest of us--about the dangers that he still faces. This essay by Margaret Anna Alice is going to make some folks SUPER uncomfortable. It made me hold my breath, and I actually agree with most of what she says in it. Daisy Luther reminds us that the more unstable things become, the more important it is to appreciate what you already have. Pay close attention to the kinds of things that command your attention. Are you more focused on the personalities and issues in the news or with improving yourself and your understanding of the world? Alex R. Knight III says to conserve your sympathies and fight your own battles if you want to have impact. One of the most positive things we can do for ourselves is to learn to be less enemy-driven in our thinking. Kent McManigal reminds us that the other side isn't what's evil. It's what's in our own hearts that needs our strongest efforts. One of the surest ways that we can recognize how quickly our liberty is dwindling is when free speech comes under direct attack. Jonathan Turley clues us in on how the Aspen Institute has created a commission of 16 individuals whose job is to fight "information disorder." If you're a truth-seeker, you'll want to know about this. Right on cue, as the prevailing Covid narrative begins to fall apart like a soup sandwich, another variant is being touted by the narrative managers. There's so much enemy-driven thinking going on these days that it takes real effort not to be caught up in it. Joakim Book has an excellent essay about whether enemies can be friends and how to separate our viewpoints from what it takes to be a decent person. Dr. Dan Stock is a family physician who recently spoke up during a school board meeting in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. The ferocity with which his comments are being yanked from most social media platforms sparked my curiosity about what he had to say. Watch it for yourself here and decide for yourself if his viewpoint is so dangerous that we should be shielded from it. If you're resistant to the ongoing coercion and pressure to vaccinate, you probably already see the writing on the wall. Life is about to become very difficult. Fellow wrongthinker Eric Peters joins me for another timely conversation. We discuss the influence of the safety cult and also talk about the growing fear-mongering over the "Delta variant" of covid and how our fears are being leveraged into bringing us to heel. The lockdowns and massive government overreaction to Covid has brought about a new class system. As Michael Brendan Dougherty explains we've unwittingly allowed certain officials to classify the public as essential, non-essential and expendable. Does that seem like a wise move?  Given a choice between weathering a power outage in the summer or the winter, I'd take winter without hesitation. Daisy Luther has some great advice on how to survive a summer power outage.  If you need some serious intellectual ammunition to counter calls for greater gun control, Kent McManigal delivers the goods. His latest take on the anti-gun bigots delusional quest to control people by criminalizing ownership of certain firearms is right on target. A large number of people are awakening to the reality that the two party system isn't what they thought it was. Thomas Luongo has an excellent essay that breaks down why the two parties have collapsed into one and how they never really represented us in the first place. The recent GameStop saga has also been a learning opportunity for anyone who's paying attention. As Jeff Deist explains, it's a perfect example of how "stakeholder theory" is really just a form of corporate social justice. The CDC and TSA have become the federal mask police. Daisy Luther has a detailed explanation of their new guidelines and the (few) exemptions to their rules. At the risk of wandering onto the thinnest of ice, let's take a look at how our culture has reached the point where the president openly advocates for men to compete in women's sports and to use women's restrooms simply by claiming to be a woman. Kenneth LaFave has a fascinating take on how current attitudes towards transgenderism stem from feminism's inability to deal with Marilyn Monroe. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

Watching small business owners forced into financial ruin and despair is getting pretty old by now. Allan Stevo has some wise words of encouragement to business owners who aren't ready to sacrifice their livelihoods to the Covid boogeyman. Ever notice how some things in life sound bad but are actually good? Bryan Caplan uses his recent vacation to Mexico to provide a vivid example of what this looks like. It's a surprisingly strong defense of free markets. I'm sneaking some anxious looks ahead to next week--Jan 6--and wondering if the riots will resume when the Congress meets to certify the Electoral College vote. Daisy Luther points out something that should be raising some serious questions: Isn't it interesting how the violent riots of 2020 ended right after the election? A great many people are reaching the boiling point as statists continue to back us into a corner, all the while insisting that this is what we really wanted. Robert E. Wright has a nice recap of some of the official acts that are sparking that anger and some of the acts of disobedience that are showing our refusal to go along. One of the toughest things about finding the courage to stand up against the systematic dismantling of Western Civilization's culture of freedom is that a great many people aren't sure what they're standing for. Paul Rosenberg's series of essays about The West That Was is a powerful reminder of the good and worthwhile things we are losing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

My friend and fellow wrongthinker Eric Peters from Eric Peters Autos joins me for our weekly check-in. We talk about the strangely unremarkable experience one of his readers had after testing positive for Covid. We also discuss the continuing push toward electric cars and what no one has hipped us to regarding the downsides. The question that's been on pretty much everyone's mind since around mid-March is: When will things get back to normal? Daisy Luther has uncomfortable truth to share on the matter. Namely, unless you're extremely wealthy, there will be no return to "normal." It's hard to stomach the sight and sound of various politicians emoting their "concern" for the owners of small businesses being destroyed by futile, dictatorial lockdown mandates. As Ron Paul explains, government, not coronavirus is what's destroying these small businesses. Anyone who is paying attention understands that we are in the midst of a culture war. What we may have forgotten is that the American Revolution was also a culture war. Ryan McMaken explains how the violence could have been avoided through decentralization of power. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

Some of the unhappiest people I know are the ones who need to control others. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 situation has only fed that insatiable need. Kent McManigal reminds us that taking responsibility for our own decisions is what leads to greater peace within and without. One of the most disturbing aspects of cultural Marxism is that is primarily about tearing down, rather than fixing real problems. Pat Buchanan has a timely warning of which historical figures are next in line for being erased. Another milepost on our journey to Wokesville: The New England Journal of Medicine is now advocating for doing away with the designation of male or female on birth certificates. Politicizing medicine sure seems like a great way to create exciting new ways for government to insert itself into your life. Now here's a topic I never dreamed I'd be sharing with my listeners. The fine art of bribery. Daisy Luther has an eye-opening essay that clues us in on the finer points of how to grease the right palms, should it ever become necessary. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

I've long believed the majority of the conflicts around us are merely extensions of an eternal war between darkness and light. Dr. Walter E. Williams has a fascinating column on the dark side of one of history's most diabolical philosophical giants--Karl Marx. Why aren't we hearing more about the South Dakota's approach to dealing with Covid-19? Amelia Janaskie says South Dakota could be favorably compared with Sweden in terms of how it handled the pandemic. Will further, more restrictive, lockdowns be imposed as we move forward? The answer to that question isn't solely in the hands of government officials. Ryan McMacken warns that governments are likely to impose new lockdowns, if they think they can get away with it. In case you hadn't noticed, speaking the truth is not getting any easier. This is especially true when dealing with violent ideologies that insist on "purity" and absolute adherence to their line of thinking. A county commissioner in Southern Utah is currently being targeted for destruction for sharing a meme that warns those rioters who want to eliminate the police that law enforcement isn't the only thing protecting us. How well do you handle unpleasant truths and brutal reality? Daisy Luther's latest column is a must read for anyone who is determined to be mentally fortified for seriously difficult times. How did things get so horribly off track this year? It's because we've been under the influence of stupid. Jeffrey A. Tucker has a great essay titled "Smart Society, Stupid People" that explains this phenomenon beautifully. If you haven't read "The Fourth Turning" book yet, you're missing out on a truly fascinating historical explanation for how and why the current upheaval is happening. David Stockman also has a pretty clear--and sobering--assessment of the growing fiscal disaster, social unrest and the upcoming presidential election. This is classic Fourth Turning stuff that we're experiencing. How does it feel to live in a time when our opinions qualify as crimes? Daisy Luther breaks down the current trend and explains why we are standing at an increasingly perilous turning point. On a related note, Tucker Carlson is dead on in his take on how our information is being controlled. This is another reason why we absolutely cannot rely on others to tell us what to think. Each of us has to be willing to become the human equivalent of a lie detector. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

Eric Peters joins us to discuss a mandate holiday as well as the necessity of seeing through the hype and hysteria that insists we should be living in a state of paralyzing fear. Some of the strongest evidence that power-seekers and opportunists are taking advantage of the global pandemic can be seen in those states and locales where government is telling us what we can and cannot buy. Daisy Luther has the low down on so-called "essential purchases" and what this portends. Thomas L. Knapp asks: If our natural rights like those protected by the First Amendment can be ignored by simply declaring an emergency, why do we pretend that government has limits? As we all adjust to the new normal, one bright spot can be seen in how businesses are now coming to us with quick and affordable delivery. James Walpole explains why this is opportunity knocking. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

Daisy, we’re honored to have you here and welcome to the Copywriters Podcast! Today, Daisy will share details of her business and whatever else we can convince her to share with us. As we begin, let me remind you of something: Copy is powerful. You’re responsible for how you use what you hear on this podcast. Most of the time, common sense is all you need. But if you make extreme claims… and/or if you’re writing copy for offers in highly regulated industries like health, finance, and business opportunity… you may want to get a legal review after you write and before you start using your copy. Who is Dasiy Luther, She is a prepper some might say a survivalist, today she runs a number of websites that provide information and tips on how to live through natural or man-made disasters. The reason I reached out to her for an interview was that I saw her story, and realised she is a ferocious writer. 100,000 words a week according to Grammarly Six years ago, Daisy was in the corporate world and hating every minute of it. The job once enjoyed had turned into a stressful grind and it was taking her away from the things she was really passionate about. A dramatic change came with the death of her father died. It was the last conversation with her dad that became the catalyst to move her forward and  towards a career in writing The universe continued throwing things at her before she committed to change. She experienced personal economic collapse with the loss of her home and car.  Another family blow was the death of her X Husband and father of her children. It was the prepping skills and a well-stocked larder that kept the family fed, and she took the leap and became a freelance writer. She has not looked back, her writing career has allowed her to be the Mum she wants to be.  Only last year she ran her business from the road during 3 month trip around the USA with her youngest homeschooled daughter On this journey, she has developed some amazing marketing skills. As for the future she is prepping her business for sale and looking to retire to Hawaii. I hope you enjoy the conversation with Daisy Luther

During her first year of being in business, she was able to make around $1,000 a month. How did she do it? Find out on this week’s episode!   Key Takeaways: [1:10] Who is Daisy and what does she do? [2:45] When you find yourself broke, what kinds of things can you do to survive? [5:35] How many hours a week does Daisy work on her business? [6:25] How did Daisy first start her business? [10:05] Consistency is so important and it is what makes you money. You have to be very consistent when it comes to building traffic for your website. [10:25] Daisy writes between 5-6 days a week. [11:45] After being in business for a year, Daisy was able to make $1,000 a month on her blog. It was challenging. [12:55] Daisy wrote a book after her first year of being business compiling her best blog posts into one place. She was able to generate between $500-600 a month from it. [13:10] Since then, Daisy has written a total of 3 books and it has provided her with a steady source of additional income. [13:45] Don’t turn your nose up at Amazon affiliates, Daisy says. They only pay 4%, but the money can add up. [14:10] With that being said, you don’t want to rely too heavily on one source of income. You have to be well-diversified. In this episode, Daisy Luther drops back by. We discuss starting and stocking your prepper pantry, cutting the grocery bills, and being a food in the apocalypse. Let's face it, building out and stocking a good pantry isn't sexy for most of us. It's meticulous work requiring a lot of thought and care -- especially for new preppers.  Stocking food and water doesn't go bang, isn't shiny, won't word off zombies, and isn't something we can brag to our friends about. (Well you could, but it's not advisable.) And it can require a lot of planning ahead. You must know what your family will and won't' eat. There's no point in stocking and squirreling away food items if it's going to go uneaten. You may be thinking, "they can just eat it or go hungry" or you may be thinking, "if they're hungry enough they will eat it". But this creates unnecessary stress for everyone. Why bother? But with a bit of thought, planning, observation, and smart buying you can put together a great pantry. Then it's just a matter of maintenance; that's the easy part. There are many considerations, obviously. Fortunately, Daisy did most of the thinking for you and shares her great tips and strategies with you in this episode...   Building out a Propper Prepper Pantry Topics Discussed: Where to begin Why it's important Leveraging a pantry for saving money and budgeting What are good food items to store How to store food with bugs and vermin in mind Keeping everything organized Staying on top of what you have so you don't waste or turn meal time preparation into a scavenger hunt The place for freeze dried food Episode Resources: ~ Become a supporting member here: http://www.itrh.net ~ Resources from this episode can be found at: http://www.intherabbithole.com/e227

We sit down with Daisy Luther from the Organic Prepper. She’s going to tell us how canning can make a huge impact in our lives. Canning is a topic we've not given much love to, unfortunately. In fact, there's never been an ITRH episode dedicated to it. And this is a large oversight on our part. The skill of canning is important. It can play a large part in getting your pantry stocked, preserving the food you grow, and even saving you money. The truth is this: It intimidated us a bit because you hear all sorts of warnings about things exploding and people dying from botulism. And it's not a sexy activity like shooting. So we consistently put off engaging in or talking about it. But as it turns out, this isn't as hard or as dangerous as some might think. Daisy tells us all about it ~ Canning for Preppers Topics Discussed: * Daisy's story * The biggest obstacle people experience * Why we should invest the time and energy * Advantages of doing it yourself vs. buying canned goods at the store * The typical cost to start * Supplies list * Kids and canned foods ~ Become a supporting member here: http://www.itrh.net ~ Resources from this episode can be found at: http://www.intherabbithole.com/e224

Are Homesteaders Moochers? - SLP 109

Episode 109 Are homesteaders just moochers living off of "civil" society? A recent opinion piece in Forbes magazine suggests that they are. And a brilliant homesteading blogger named Daisy Luther of The Organic Prepper blog, articulately countered the argument on Zero Hedge. I read Daisy's article and thought it would make for an interesting discussion on our latest episode of the podcast. But first Marianne and I share a little bit about how we are "mooching" on our respective homesteads! August Update Marianne is tired of hand watering her plants and is making plans for installing a watering system in her garden.  She wants to create a watering grid to "just hydrate everything." And she talks about a sustainability-oriented company she's considering for sourcing this watering system. I'm excited about my recent sheet mulching project. Looking at all the weeds in between my raised beds got old.  So after collecting cardboard from friends and neighbors, I covered the weeds with it. Then I topped the cardboard with lots of straw. If you'd like a gander at how it turned out, check out my posts on our Facebook Page and on our Instagram account. Now on to the diatribe against homesteaders. Reality TV vs Reality Like so many articles out there these days, the Forbes piece on homesteaders seemed outrageous, incendiary and ill-informed. And it was posted in a "reputable" publication - Forbes magazine. As Marianne and I note, basing your opinion of a group purely on the caricatures painted by so-called "reality" T.V. shows, might not be such a great idea. The author of the Forbes piece, an economist named Adam Ozimek, summarizes his case in this paragraph: "If we all lived “self-reliant” lives like Tony often implores us, spending most of our time on basic agricultural subsistence, then modern hospitals couldn't exist. It's only because most of us choose to not live agrarian “self-reliant” lifestyles that this care would be available to Tony, Amelia, and perhaps someday, their children. And what if both of them become too injured to work the land anymore? Would they starve to death, or would they survive off of the social safety net our government provides, like food stamps?" One might also conclude that if we all lived "healthy" lifestyles then modern hospitals couldn't exist.  But should we all endeavor to be ill so that hospitals can continue on? Health, Happiness and "The Economy" A more advanced society might encourage whatever it takes for people to be healthier and happier, even if it's at the expense of large institutions such as hospitals and big Pharma. In such a case, health care might very well be transformed into something much less costly and much more effective. And smaller communities of people, who know and help each other on a regular basis, might find their own ways of taking care of less fortunate community members, in a much more heart-centered manner. From what I've seen homesteaders are by and large, happier than the majority of the population.  But this happy lifestyle is threatening to our established system. As Daisy Luther puts it in her rebuttal: "The fact is, the less we require from society, the less power that society has over us. Our lifestyles give us some distance from the hustle and the bustle. We don't have to make as much money because we don't live in the consumer matrix that engulfs so much of society. We are content to live simply instead of hustling from one non-productive activity to another." And this makes us happier. But should we give up this happiness so that the system can continue? Homesteaders & Freedom The truth is, homesteaders generally contribute to the "system" just like everyone else. We pay our taxes and, to varying degrees, choose to partake in government and institutional programs like the rest of the population.  The difference is, we have more freedom to choose what we participate in and support. I believe a populace that is free to choose, is an empowered populace - an important check on government and corporations and a powerful aspect of our future as a society. And the freedom to do things differently is vital if we want our species and our planet to evolve. What do you think?  Are homesteaders mooching? Are they the pioneers of the future?  Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

If you want to change the way people think, sometimes you just gotta get right up in their grill and tell ‘em what you think. Today, I’ll share the story of Daisy Luther. A freedom fighting, gun-toting, homeschooling mother who’s inspiring a nation of Organic Preppers. Listen to the Podcast SUBSCRIBE TO PODCAST IN ITUNES Welcome to Episode 7!  This is the fascinating story of Daisy Luther from the blogs The Organic Prepper and DaisyLuther.com. I think you'll really enjoy the story of the winding path that led Daisy to homesteading and outspoken preparedness. A series of family tragedies, job losses and hardships drove her deep into the wilderness to homeschool her children, and learn that homesteading isn't as easy as it first seems. Her experiences reignited the skeptical, always questioning persona of her youth and inspired her to take up writing. She wrote books and multiple blogs centered on prepping, preparedness and delivering the truth in an unabashed way that you never see in mainstream media. Daisy shares her thoughts on homeschooling, homesteading, online courses, self-sufficient income, prepping, preparedness and much more. So grab some coffee and pull up a chair!
