El thrash metal es un subgénero más agresivo del heavy metal que se caracteriza específicamente por sus ritmos pesados ​​similares al metal extremo, NWOBHM, speed metal, biker metal y hardcore punk en agresividad y contundencia. Las canciones del género suelen utilizar percusión rápida y un bajo registro de riffs de guitarra, los cuales suelen ser así mismo rápidos y cortantes. Algo muy especial en el estilo es la batería en donde se alternan pedal y bombo a velocidades por encima de los 180 bpm, mientras que también se vale del doble pedal o doble bombo y voces agresivas pero sin llegar al extremo de estilos más pesados como el black metal, quizás la velocidad rápida y agresiva está más heredada del hardcore punk sin embargo el thrash adquiere más técnica a la hora de ejecución. David Ellefson, the legendary bassist for Megadeth, did some special tour dates with his all-star group Metal Allegiance. Metal Allegiance’s core members are David Ellefson (Megadeth), Alex Skolnick (Testament), Mike Portnoy (Ex-Dream Theater) and Mark Menghi. Guest vocalists have included Phil Anselmo, Randy Blythe, Troy Sanders, Chuck Billy, Mark Osegueda, Cristina Scabbia, Doug Pinnick, Jamey Jasta, Chris Jericho, Tim “Ripper” Owens, Alissa White-Gluz, Steve “Zetro” Souza, Max Cavalera and Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth”.
