Mark Morton Talks Chester Bennington, Solo Album Without The Pain & Lamb Of God's Future On The Loaded Radio Podcast TL;DR: Lamb Of God guitarist Mark Morton joins the Loaded Radio Podcast to talk about his soulful new solo album Without The Pain, collaborating with late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, the creative process in Lamb Of God, and his honest thoughts on both current and former bandmates. Mark Morton Unleashes His Blues-Driven Side With Without The Pain Mark Morton isn't just the riff-slinging guitar beast from Lamb Of God. On this week's episode of the Loaded Radio Podcast, the guitarist pulls back the curtain on his newest solo release Without The Pain, a record steeped in blues, southern rock, and emotional depth. Released via Rise Records, Without The Pain features a diverse lineup of guests, including Cody Jinks, Neil Fallon (Clutch), Grace Bowers, Jason Isbell, Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), and Jaren Johnston (The Cadillac Three). It's a sharp turn from the punishing rhythms of Lamb Of God, yet unmistakably Mark Morton. During the podcast, Morton explains how the album was years in the making, allowing him to fully explore the stylistic roots that shaped his musical identity long before he ever set foot on a metal stage.  Collaborating With Chester Bennington: The Story Behind “Cross Off” One of the most emotionally resonant points of the podcast is Morton's reflection on working with late Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington. The two teamed up on “Cross Off,” a standout track from Morton's 2019 debut solo album Anesthetic. Morton opens up about the power of that collaboration — how Bennington brought a raw intensity to the track, and how the session still resonates with him today. Lamb Of God, Sobriety, And Looking Forward Of course, no conversation with Mark Morton is complete without diving into Lamb Of God. In this episode, he shares honest reflections on the band's internal dynamics — both past and present. Morton touches on his long journey with sobriety, how it's impacted his creative process, and how the band's chemistry continues to evolve after more than two decades of making heavy music together. Morton also hints at what's ahead for Lamb Of God, suggesting that while his solo work is a vital creative outlet, there's plenty of fuel left in the fire when it comes to the band's future output. Listen To The Full Interview Want to hear Mark Morton discuss songwriting secrets, guest collaborations, Lamb Of God's legacy, and his love of southern blues? Hit play on the podcast episode below and get the full story straight from the man himself. FAQ Q: What is Without The Pain by Mark Morton? A: It's Mark Morton's second solo album, exploring blues and southern rock influences with a range of guest musicians. Q: Who features on Without The Pain? A: The album includes appearances by Cody Jinks, Neil Fallon, Grace Bowers, Jason Isbell, Jaren Johnston, and more. Q: Did Mark Morton work with Chester Bennington? A: Yes, on the track “Cross Off” from his first solo album Anesthetic in 2019. Q: Is Mark Morton still in Lamb Of God? A: Absolutely. Morton continues to be a key creative force in Lamb Of God while exploring other musical avenues through solo work. Q: What did he say about Chris Adler? A: Morton remains reluctant to discuss the former Lamb Of God drummer and the reasons behind his departure. Mark Morton Bio Mark Morton is the longtime lead guitarist for the Grammy-nominated groove metal band Lamb Of God. Known for his tight, aggressive riffing and technical solos, Morton has been a core part of the band since its early days as Burn the Priest. Outside of Lamb Of God, Mark has carved out a distinct solo identity that explores blues, southern rock, and deeply personal themes. His 2019 debut solo album Anesthetic featured collaborations with artists like Chester Bennington and Jacoby Shaddix, while his 2025 release Without The Pain leans further into heartfelt, roots-driven territory. Morton is also open about his sobriety and personal growth, often using music as a vehicle for emotional expression. He remains one of heavy metal's most versatile and thoughtful guitarists.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersMegadeth are one of the few bands in the world - of any genre - that need no introduction. For four decades they have been at the forefront of the metal landscape, with their most recent album The Sick, The Dying and The Dead their highest selling to date. Whereas most bands plateau somewhat or more often decline in the back end of their career Megadeth are doing the exact opposite.Which makes frontman Dave Mustaine one happy camper. Now, after nearly eight years, Megadeth are poised to return to Australia as part of Knotfest from March 24 to 26, with two side shows also scheduled for Adelaide and Melbourne.Which makes Mustaine even happier.HEAVY sat down for an awesome chat with the great man earlier this morning for a frank and open discussion about anything and everything. One of the topics of conversation was what has changed with Megadeth since their last venture Down Under in 2015."Well, ALOT," he laughed. "We've had some lineup changes and every time we do that the person that came in was better. When we parted ways with the drummer before Dirk (Verbeuren) - it was the person before Chris Adler, which was Shawn Drover - we tried to get the Rust In Peace line-up back together but it didn't work because Nick (Menza) went off one way and we went off the other. We contacted Adler and asked if he would play on the record and maybe contact Nick again and have him tour with us because he couldn't really do the record. That didn't work out either, so we had Chris do the record and stay, and while we were doing that Chris and his band parted ways and we didn't know if Chris was going to stay with us or stay with them. Of course, we wanted him to stay with Lamb Of God and I'm sad that he left and there's any kind of distance between the family. I do think that Art (Cruz) is an amazing drummer and then after that Chris Adler recommended Dirk, and Dirk is - in my mind - the best drummer we've had since Gar Samuelson. He's a big fan of Gar, and that is the power that drives Megadeth. Jazz metal, not rock metal. Nick was a super talented and powerful drummer and he fortunately was able to do a lot of those jazz hooks too, so we almost had that magic that we did when Gar was there. But we definitely had something which Gar did not, which was the power that Nick Menza possessed. Same thing can go down the line with the bass playing. (Dave) Ellefson was in the band, then was out. James (LoMenzo) came in, he was out. Ellefson came back because the Drover brothers kept pressuring me to do this, get Ellefson back. He came in and we had that weird shit that happened. I had Steve Di Giorgio come in and record the record and James is back and I love that he's back. The singing is fabulous on stage. He actually can sing really well, so he helps encourage me to sing. And then Kiko (Loureiro, guitars) as you know... I parted ways with Chris Broderick - I mean where do you go from having Marty Friedman and Chris Poland and it's time to make a guitar player change again? So Kiko, I saw a video on line of Kiko actually being put head to head against Chris Broderick, someone made a video of that, and I watched it and I went fuck I gotta get in touch with this guy. The funny thing is that when I contacted him he said that he had been talking to Ellefson, so when I talked to Ellefson the next time I said what the fucks wrong with you, man? Why didn't you tell me you know this guy(laughs)? So that was a great addition to the band. Kiko and James play really well together and Kiko and Dirk have an amazing ability to play those crazy riffs together. Of course, we can always be better, so we all go into the jam room every day and try and work on little bits and pieces of a song and our record producer is out with us on the road as our music director keeping our chops up."In the full interview, Dave talks about being part of Knotfest, the two sideshows and how they will differ from the festival shows, forty years in the music industry, listening to your body when it comes to performing, the increasing difficulty in coming up with a set list to keep fans happy, the early days of Megadeth and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, becoming more understanding of your environment with experience, musical trends and how they have affected Megadeth, what he hopes to leave as the band's musical legacy, the top three Commandments of Metal and more.

Musical Warfare With JOHN CAMPBELL From LAMB OF GOD

Since 1994 Lamb Of God have almost been in a league of their own.Formed by John Campbell and Chris Adler, with Mark Morton joining soon after followed by vocalist Randy Blythe after the bands third demo. After initially starting life as Burn The Priest, the band changed their name to the more user friendly Lamb Of God and released the album New American Gospel in late 2000, ushering heavy metal into the new millennium in style. In the 22 years since Lamb Of God have released nothing but quality albums, in the process entrenching their name amongst the greats of metal such as Metallica, Slayer and Pantera. Not content to be mentioned alongside such legendary acts, Lamb Of God have refused to rest on their laurels, pushing themselves on each new album. 2020's self titled release lit the fires for a new generation, but with their latest offering Omens set for release on October 7 you get the impression Lamb Of God are only just starting to fully settle into their groove. The press release calls Omens "arguably Lamb Of God's most aggressive and ambitious work to date", and after listening to an advance copy I would be hard pressed to argue.HEAVY caught up with Campbell earlier this week to discuss Omens."I'm excited to finally get it out there," he beamed. "We recorded it back in February and we were working on it well before that. I think it's our best record ever - as I do with every one because we're constantly trying to outdo ourselves and I think somehow we do it every time. This record is no different. This time we recorded it differently in that normally we would learn our parts, go to the studio, and go do the separate parts in the studio and track our parts and then that would be put together by the producer. This time we went in and tracked live to get that live feel. Those were the tracks we started with and pulled out the parts that were amazing. It was really for drum takes more than anything, but going for those live takes we really got the feel that they would translate well live so that was a different method of recording. The songs, I think we have really good at using our craft and writing. There are great songs on this that are very dynamic. There's more tunes as well as thrash. There's hard core and then a little experimental reaching out. Just some real heavy metal."In the full interview, John responds to the press releases claims about the album, tracking at Henson Recording Studios where artists like The Doors and The Ramones produced classic albums, the writing process from album to album and how it changes, the early days of Lamb Of God, why they chose Blythe as vocalist, a possible visit Down Under and more.

New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Tras la demos, Burn The Priest grabó sendos álbumes compartidos con Zed y Agents Of Satan. Now you've got something to die for». Otros grupos serán: Atreyu, In This Moment, 3 Inches of Blood, Hatebreed, Chimaira, Shadows Fall, y Winds of Plague.

Setting The Tone top 20 albums of 2020     #1Grey Daze Amends, okay so this is Setting The Tone number one album and there's been a lot of emotion behind my call whilst this year has truly sucked for many for so many reasons, the one thing that has been amazing is this year we have had some stunning albums from so many different artists, we have had singles, and eps and albums that have all been great to distract us from the true reality of 2020. so I have chosen Grey Daze and their album Amends, why you ask well simply I'm a huge fan of the 90's Rock sound, but what this comes down to is that this is an album that is made up of original songs and re worked, sadly in 2017 the world lost an incredible artist in Chester Bennington, Grey Daze was the band  he was in before Linkin Park prior to his death plans where in motion to play an anniversary show in Arizona at the famous club tattoo, and even re-recording some of the original tracks from the bands earlier albums, however as well know Chester lost his battle with depression. Some time had passed and Sean Dodwell one of the bands original foundering members reached out to Chester's; family about finishing what he and Chester had discussed in 2017. With the families wishes he and Mace Beyers, Cristin Davies along with some amazing producers set to work on breathing new life into these songs. Using the original tapes from 20 years ago. And the results are breath taking. I was lucky enough to interview Mace about the album and Chester. Honestly this album is an emotional roller-coaster but the work and dedication that went into this album is incredible everyone has poured their heart and soul into it. And this is why it's my number 1 album of 2020   #2 Deftones Ohms I don't know really what to say that has not been said about this album, it's the follow up to 2016 Gore in in my opinion this is miles ahead of gore, it feels the guys went back to an earlier sound that of white pony, it's just amazing and one to put on and just sit back relax and hear the amazing sounds that only Deftones can offer.   #3 Trivium what the dead men say in all honesty it's hard for me not to put this in my top 2, it's so strong and I feel that Trivium have really found something with this I loved their previous two albums Silence in the snow and The sin and the sentence, but they in reality those albums where the ground work to what was being for this album, its heavy, its fast and brutal and see's Trivium in my opinion hit their best form to date.   #4 Lamb of God -Lamb of God this is LOG first album without Chris Adler who had this unique sound, and I took me a couple of listens with this album to truly apricate Art cruiz the new mam behind the kits style, and in all honesty as much as I miss Chris Adler this is log BEST ALBUM in a long time.   #5 Killer be killed Reluctant hero ,KILLER BE KILLED is Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Black Queen), Troy Sanders (Mastodon, Gone Is Gone), Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, ex-Sepultura) and Ben Koller (Converge, Mutoid Man, All Pigs Must Die) This album is just amazing, you don't get time with this album to breath as each track rolls perfectly into the next, this has a bit of black sabbthy style riffs to punk to hardcore to thrash just awesome   #6 Creeper Sex death and the infinite void, this album was a great follow up from Creeper, offers to perfect bland of Rock with Emotional tones achieving the band a top 5 in 2020,   #7 Biffy Clyro A celebration of endings, this caught me off guard as I did not think this album was going to be so good, I have not enjoyed a Biffy album since only revolutions as that was so strong every song on that album felt like it could be a single, Biffy were album to secure a number 1 album with this and for me it just shows why Andy Copping and Download Festival are right to put their faith in them to headliner the main stage at next year's Download festival for only their second time.   #8 Ozzy Osbourne no ordinary man, this perhaps is the album I have heard from Ozzy in recent years where I get to sit back and go Ozzy you have delivered, I know many are torn over it as there are a host of amazing musicians that appear on the album from Slash, Duff. But for me it's so good and it feels that if this is to be to prince of darkness last album then it's a perfect one to end on.     #9 LOATHE `I let it in and it took everything, believe me when I say this, I wish I could put this album higher up the list but it's been that dam good of a year for music, however this debut album is out of this world a slight Deftones feel to this album amazing.   #10 All time Low wake up sunshine this is a band that when they announced they was going to release their 9th Album I was a bit on the fence I felt they had lost their way with their later albums. However, wake up sunshine is a great return to form and I feel they have really found the perfect balance between earlier material and now.     #11 Green Day Farther of All MotherFuckers what I loved about this album is yet again Green Day are not afraid to change the game with their sound, this album is completely different to anything before it, it has this vibe of like a 50's Rock n roll feel love it   #12 Five finger death punch F8 sees a great return to form for Five fingers death punch for their 8th album packed with the sound of five finger death punch but this an album that feels. More personal   #13 Phoxjaw Royal swan, is Phoxjaw debut album an album that takes so many different paths, and I really enjoyed that it does not stick to just one path   #14 Pearl Jam Gigaton Pearl Jam return with their 10th Album and the follow up to 2013 Lighting Bolt, there are moments of excitement but this is more of a slower paced album than lightning bolt.   #15 Machine Gun Kelly tickets to my downfall so MGK has gone down a different path, the joke is Eminem Kill shot in response to MGK rap devil made MGK go into to the pop punk game with this album he has teamed up with Travis Barker from Blink 182, and the results of this album are surprising go   #16 Enter shikari nothing is true & everything is, I know this may not please many but Enter shikari is a band I have never really gotten into but this album had me hooked just so good and its one that takes so many twists and turns was one that caught me off guard at how good it is   #17 Bush The kingdom I will admit I have heard the name of this band for many years but never really took the time to listen to what they had to offer, well what a mistake the kingdom is stanning packed with Rif and   #18 Seether Si Vis Pacem, para Bellum, the album title stands for if you want peace prepare for war. Seether are a band I have loved since 2005, their grunge rock sound with heavy tones is something I just really love to hear them, this album is their best in a while, its heavy in your face and angry     #19 Kill The Lights the sinner , so this was a last minute changed around and honestly its been so hard to rank this albums this year, it has been such a strong year, however this album reminded me so much of Bullet for my valentine debut album and I'm trying not say it's because of Moose their ex drummer but this album has the hunger, the fire that that debut album from Bullet had this is such an amazing debut album   #20 Anchor Lane Casino Anchor lane is a band who starting to make some really big noise in the scene they're about to make their second appearance at next year's Download Festival and that takes me doing when you're still finding your way as a band, their debut album is just so much fun to listen to, check out Setting The Tone's Interview with https://mcdn.podbean.com/mf/web/9csjvq/Conor_Gaffney_Anchor_Lane_interview_final_mix60ngp.mp3   Some that despite their sheer brilliance did not quite get into the top 20 list #21 The Used Heart work a good album from the used for me it went a bit strange in the middle of the album #22 Orbital junction Egos and Instincts I love this genre so much the riffs are sludgy and it's just a great album to chill out too #23 Alpha wolf a quiet place to die is a great follow up to their debut album mono, its heavy and one that will go over very well live #24 Haken virus Haken Virus is just incredible within the first few tracks I was hooked and wanted to add the rest of this awesome bands back catalogue, I admit it took a Facebook advert for me to try this out I knew very little of this band. I'm just happy I tried #25 Boston Manor Glue Boston Manor is a band I got into a few years back and have never looked back, Glue is a great alternative it's a great rock album. I picked this has I've liked this bands previous work, there is great energy from this album and is different from everything else on this list         You can find this episode and previous episodes from Setting The Tone in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com   Thank you to our sponsor @The Guitar Ninja Academy, the best place to become a guitar master. Dirk Verbeuren has played drums on more extreme metal releases than is reasonable or appropriate for any single human. He took over for Chris Adler as the drummer for Megadeth in 2016, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to release underground release after underground release — including material with the recently revived Cadaver. Dirk not only has freakish technical skill, but he also has the ability to deploy that skill as an improvisational master, an incredible mimic, or a deliberate and exacting architect of complex drumming. Dirk is not just a musician, but is also a drum teacher. His analytical side allows him to be self-reflective and discuss what his thought process looks like while composing and playing. And, this conversation took some unexpected turns into the dangers of conspiracy theories and why even folks with a “dark side” who gravitate toward extreme metal should still work on being more present. Check out more from Dirk here: Website: www.dirkverbeuren.com | www.megadeth.com Instagram: @dirkverbeuren | @megadeth | @bentsea_ Bandcamp: Bent Sea Radio Show: Dirk’s Extreme Blast airs on Gimme Radio Dig into Dirk’s impressive discography and a few of his recommended releases here: Encyclopedia Metallum Sybreed “Antares” Obsydians “Psychodynamics” Tronos “Celestial Mechanics” Scarve “Irradiant” If you're enjoying the show, the best way to support it is by sharing with your friends. Dave Mustaine’s desire for everyone in the band to have creative freedom. [17:46] Growing up with parents supportive of Dirk’s interest in musice — including buying Cannibal Corpse and NWA records with “concerning” cover art [21:55] The balance between being analytical and creative — including Dirk’s interest in science as a kid and the dangers of science denialism and conspiracy theories. [33:20] Touring internationally and being exposed to different cultures [37:05] What is the difference between the ability to mimic and the ability to be creative? How can musicians learn to “turn off” their analytical side in order to be creative? [50:00] Learning to be more present and the dangers of overwork and burnout. They determine a competitor’s category, making sure lengths are accurate and what’s presented matches the criteria for your category. While a competitor may believe he or she should be in one specific category, the panel assures that the judges are evaluating like competitors and that you’re on-stage in the right category. In order to minimize your time standing in line, we’ve doubled the Pre-Jury and Registration Panel since the last time in Denver. We’ll have a total of 8 pre-jurors at 4 tables with 2 registration stations, with half of them dedicated to Full Beard category competitors. Pre-jurors will be paired and evaluating facial hair types for which they would be ineligible, e.g.. Moustache competitors will be evaluated by Full Beard pre-jurors. ***Artistic category competitors will need have a photo of their creation on hand, if they’re not wearing it, for the pre-jurors to evaluate. *** THERE WILL BE 2 WINDOWS FOR REGISTRATION AND CHECK-IN: EARLY (FRI NIGHT) AND DAY-OF. ⇨ The first, and preferred, is Early Registration on Friday night at the Welcome Party + Merch Market for the 2018 GABMC at the Canal Club, from 7:00-9:30 PM. That way you already have your number and swag bag, you can just show your ticket to get in on Saturday, and you won’t have to carry around your swag bag all day Saturday. We’ll have a basic pre-jury panel there Friday night to get you registered and checked in. ⇨ The second is Day-of Registration on-site at the Remington Beard Boss 2018 Great American BMC at The National, from 1:00-3:00 PM. We’ll have our full panel there to speed things along. Dedicated to his Whaler beard, he first got into bearding 2014 when he finally got up the nerve to go to a meeting. The community quickly became something he loved, and threw himself into it because of the people involved and charity aspect. Over the past 6 years, and with his guidance through several years, WBMA - World Beard and Moustache Association member club Spokane Beard & Mustache has raised over $75,000 for local charities. Jeremy’s traveling has been limited due to multiple back surgeries, but has managed to take home several partial beard trophies over the years and judged at competitions in the U.S. and Canada, not to mention learning from some of the best judges around at Spokane’s own competition over the years. A devoted fan of Montucky Cold Snacks (a brand of Northwest lager that donates 8% back to local causes), he’s been a Teamster Warehouseman for 22 years, and married to his wife Heather for 18. They have 2 kids, Taylor (26) and Chloe (19), and they now enjoy their empty nest if you don’t count Otis (6), their 150 lb. Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. He is currently the World Champion in the Full Beard Freestyle category and was awarded “Best in Show” at the 2017 WBMC in Austin. After a tidal wave of public support, he’s been a member of Remington’s Beard Boss team for the past two years. A man of creative and artistic talent, he got his start in beard competitions back in 2013, and since then has had the opportunity to spend a lot of time on both sides of the judging table. He has racked up many 1st Place finishes in Full Beard Freestyle and Full Beard Groomed categories at numerous competitions across the country. Outside of bearding, Jason owns and operates One Eyed Cat Curiosities and Crafts, a handmade functional ceramics business that specializes in cups and mugs with moustache guards. Please welcome Wisconsin’s Jason Kiley!    credit: Greg Anderson Photography   Chris Adler   Epicly-goateed Grammy-winning drummer, Chris Adler! Best known as a member and founder of metal band Lamb of God and Grammy Award winning member of Megadeth, Chris began Lamb of God in 1994 under the moniker Burn the Priest with dorm-mate, best friend, and it’s current bass player, John Campbell. Both previously served as judges at the RVA Beard League’s annual charity competition, the Mid-Atlantic Beard & ‘Stache Championships. Chris became a member of thrash metal band Megadeth from 2014-2016, collaborating and working closely with Megadeth’s primary songwriter and founder, Dave Mustaine and is credited in helping write their 15th album, “Dystopia.” Chris performed most live world-wide touring dates in support of that album. In his 5th Grammy nomination, "Dystopia" won Chris his first Grammy Award for the Best Metal Performance at the 59th Grammy Awards. In 2006 Adler collaborated with revered progressive guitarist Ron Jarzombek beginning the project Blotted Science, and in 2010, Adler moved to Toronto for 6 weeks and recorded and helped write the album "Volition" with the progressive metal band Protest The Hero. The album went on to win and provide Chris his first Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent to the U.S. Grammy). In 2014 he contributed several drum tracks to the Testament album “Dark Roots of the Earth.” In 2016 Adler recorded three songs with Jim Gillette, Michael Angelo Batio, and Victor Wooten in a California studio for a Nitro reunion album. As of October 2017, he left the Nitro reunion project to focus on a mid-2018 release and tour with Lamb of God. He is the elder brother of bandmate and guitarist Willie Adler (Official), whom he brought into the band. Prior to his work in Burn the Priest/Lamb of God, Chris played in several local bands including Calibra, Jettison Charlie, and Grouser. Our guest this week on your favorite metal podcast was suggested to us by none other than Chris Adler of Lamb of God back when he was on the podcast last year, although we have been fans of Allegaeon for quite a while outside of that endorsement. In our interview with guitarist Greg Burgess we talk about trying to top what you think is your best work, the shuffling of the staff around the band, manager and booking agent and why they needed to make a change, what surrounded the shift in singers for their new record Proponent for Sentience, and we find out how much it costs to get Bill Nye in your music video. We also discuss the non-beef beef that came up this week between Born of Osiris guitarist Born of Osiris and The Acacia Strain's Vincent Bennett. What appeared to be drunk Tweets got serious when the metal media paid it some attention. Are we taking ourselves too seriously? Drunk Tweets are just drunk Tweets, right? Even if you are picking a fight with someone who doesn't even know why you are fighting with them in the first place. When a band feels they have to diffuse a situation as the first reaction to something that can be attributed to an over-the-limit BAC level, maybe we need to adopt a sense of humor. Let's just apologize now for our discussion too while we're at it. Songs: Allegaeon – "All Hail Science" Steve N Seagulls – "Symphony of Destruction"
