You know Jason Hook as the guitarist of Five Finger Death Punch. A few years ago Jason left Five Finger and instead of joining another band in need of his services he ventured out and did his own thing, that thing is called Flat Black. Their debut album is called Dark Side of the Brain and is available now. The sound is heavy, melodic, and in your face. If you've ever enjoyed his playing than Flat Black is something you need to be checking out. Their touring activities start this weekend with Godsmack and Nothing More.
Let's get that lead singer some tattoos! This week's guest on Discover New Music is Jason Hook of Flat Black. After leaving FFDP in 2020, Hook set out on his own creative path and, after four years of hard work, is beyond relieved to finally have his band's debut album "Dark Side of the Brain" out into the world. And according to him it's "100% authentically" Jason Hook. Plus we play a round of Rapid Fire with, you guessed it, more Loch Ness/whale penis talk!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Join me for this bonus episode as we go back in time to this years Upheaval Festival to chat with Jason Hook of FlatBlack, Austin Meade and Christoper and Walter of Stabbing Westward. Jason and I talk about FlatBlack's debut album, which had dropped that day. How it's been getting out on the road to play songs no one really knows, adding a live album to the deluxe edition of the vinyl, and how important it was to make this feel like a band versus Jason and hired guns and more. Austin and I get cozy in the bands locker room dressing area, and talk about his tireless work ethic. Balancing out being a new dad and marriage in addition to all the writing and touring he does, and how it's been to own your own bus and fixing it when it breaks down and more as we catch up with Austin following his set. Lastly, get in the van with Christopher, Walter and I as we chat with the Stabbing Westward guys before their set, and talk about the band kinda being back now, the resurgence it seems they are on, and getting to bed a part of a lot of various festivals. How some have been tagging them as nu metal, even though they were around before that. Chris and Walt open up about what got them back together, and what we can expect from them moving forward. Three guests from different rock genres are on this episode of Talkin' Rock with Meltdown. First up, it's Brandon Boyd from Incubus. We discuss their upcoming tour, and why it's in arenas instead of outdoor sheds. We talk about how he approaches writing lyrics, traveling the world, horror movies, and more. Jason Hook from Flat Black is next. He tells me about his Canadian upbringing, about the band and how he put it together, and working with Corey Taylor. That's just for starters. Finally, it's Lee Jennings from The Funeral Portrait. We start out talking about the screams we heard last week while ghost-hunting at a local Detroit insane asylum. Yes, I included the audio for you to hear. He tells me about Suffocate City, their new album dropping on September 13th, and the guests on it. There are plenty. Great getting to know Lee over the past couple of weeks. Thanks for listening!
Nearly a year since Flat Black made their debut as a band, Jason Hook celebrates the band's first studio album and looks ahead to what's next.

Flat Black guitarist/mastermind Jason Hook and I nerd out on Metallica, Kiss, and guitars. Flat Black just released their new album "Dark Side of Your Brain," which features a collab with the great Corey Taylor, so he tells me how that friendship formed. He tells me about the grueling process of picking the right vocalist for the band and how he landed on Wrex Horton, former bassist of Falling in Reverse. Speaking of, Jason is also of course the former guitarist for Five Finger Death Punch, so we get into that a bit. https://flatblackmusic.com/ Theme Music by: LOVELESS https://open.spotify.com/artist/1MP7xlABJ13LtmHfG77SCJ?si=rfxQEIRmQhymL9BCnl13Yg Production by WhatTheGleeson Content Creation https://www.instagram.com/whatthegleeson TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@jesealee Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jesealee/ YouTube https://youtube.com/@JeseaLee Podcast on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/5ptN7bPT8MEYf3W1J28fAK?si=e2a2f7cc56904cd4 Spotify Playlists: https://open.spotify.com/user/1281170391?si=f063098bbc4a4c7f Subscribe to my newsletter: https://jesealee.substack.com/ Merch: https://my-store-11455576.creator-spring.com/ Everything else: https://www.jesealee.com/
Jason Hook: From FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH to FLAT BLACK Former FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH guitarist Jason Hook is making waves with his new project, FLAT BLACK. The seasoned musician has traded the familiar for the unknown, launching into a new chapter of his career. The band's debut LP, "Dark Side Of The Brain", was produced by Hook and Chris Collier (KORN) and was recorded at both Jason‘s home studio and The Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas. The album features a track called “Nothing To Some” which features guest vocalist Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT) and stands as a rager that is destined to land on year-end “best of” lists and in repeat rotation in your preferred music listening service. Bolstered by anthemic riffs, battering ram percussion, and full-on rhythmic thrust, Taylor‘s vicious vocals sound as though he gargled with razor blades and battery acid before spewing his parts, and it's a beautiful thing. All of that, combined with a classic metallic influence that is threaded through the song, makes “Nothing To Some” a seriously definitive moment for FLAT BLACK. Hook is joined in FLAT BLACK by singer Wes Horton, bassist Nick Diltz and drummer Rob Pierce. Horton was introduced to music at age 13, thanks to his sister and Guitar Hero. He honed his vocal chops by playing in local bands and making online videos. Various music industry friends and acquaintances would become the connective tissue between himself and Hook. Horton knew he wanted to be a frontman, and FLAT BLACK afforded him that opportunity. Wes loves the fact that his bandmates prioritize songcraft — and that allows him to be the singer he has always wanted to be. Diltz, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, is the son of a legendary rock music photographer who brought him to concerts during his formative years. He recalls being inspired by watching a VHS video of U2 performing at legendary venue Red Rocks. Seeing fans clamoring for a piece of Bono in the footage is a vision that never left his head. This first exposure to the power of a true rock icon solidified Nick‘s destiny as a live performer. Pierce hails from Nashville, a.k.a. Music City. His dad was a race car driver and his grandfather was a pastor. He grew up racing go karts and at first, wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps until he joined the fourth-grade band and was bitten by the music bug. He chose the snare drum over the saxophone and from that moment on, music was the only thing that mattered. Rob got his first drum kit at age 11, which he set up in his dad's car shop. He learned to play his instrument next to 1,000 horsepower engines, which influences his highly energetic style to this day. In this exclusive interview, Jason Hook opens up about his departure from FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, his feelings toward his former band, the inspiration behind FLAT BLACK, and his vision for the future. Also in the podcast this week, Loaded Radio's Scott Penfold discusses GOJIRA performing at the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Olympics in Paris and the backlash that ensued afterwards. By some people at least. The band's explosive rendition of the revolutionary song “Ah! Ça Ira,” complete with pyrotechnics and a striking visual representation of a beheaded Marie Antoinette, sparked a wave of controversy. Critics, many with religious affiliations, were quick to label the performance “satanic,” pointing to the dramatic imagery and the song's revolutionary themes. Social media was ablaze with accusations of the West “worshipping the devil,” with some going as far as to claim that the performance was evidence of a satanic takeover. So get ready to dive deep into the mind of a guitar icon with Jason Hook and take a closer look at GOJIRA's explosive Olympics performance on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast.

Legendary guitarist Jason Hook is storming out of the gates with his new band FLAT BLACK, as they prepare to release their debut album "Dark Side of The Brain" on July 19th via Fearless Records. The former Five Finger Death Punch guitarist recruited a trio of young, hungry, and talented musicians (Wrex Horton on vocals, Nick Diltz on bass, Rob Pierce on drums) with a drive not only to replicate his past success but to surpass it with his new band. Despite reaching a commercial summit with his prior band thanks to multiple platinum certifications, sold-out arena shows, and a string of No. 1 singles, Hook remains as hungry for musical blood and thunder as the day he first picked up a guitar at the age of 6.

Since their inception in 2005 Five Finger Death Punch are a band who has constantly galvanized opinions.Consider too heavy for the mainstream by most, and too mellow in parts for the metal community in others, the band had ridden their own musical merry-go-round of success, taking metal to places seldom envisaged in the past and to a wider audience than ever dreamed possible. They have had number one hits, controversy, sold out tours and runaway success, yet still don't receive the recognition they deserve in some quarters.Their debut album Way Of The Fist divided the metal community but was a resounding success, paving the way for a multitude of bands to follow and finally providing that crossover style which bridged the divide between mainstream metal and purists. Now, Five Finger Death Punch return with a new album, Afterlife, and new guitarist Andy James.Ever moving forward and always quick to trample over the doubters, Five Finger Death Punch are nothing if not a force unto themselves, laying waste to the doubters and recruiting a new legion of fans with every release.Put simply, they are a band who don't give two shits whether you like them or not. They will continue making music that fills their own personal voids and for that they have to be respected.James sat down with HEAVY earlier this week to talk about Afterlife and being the new kid on the block."Musically, it's definitely an evolution from the older stuff,” he began. “Trying to keep the sound of the band, obviously, I think we were maybe a bit conscious of that with changing our guitar player for this new record. I know personally for me, I was thinking how am I going to approach this? Because obviously I'm not gonna sit there and say I'm gonna sound like Jason Hook and do that whole thing. I wanted to bring my own flavour to the band and not be weird. Especially for someone like me who has been a fan of the band. I'm used to hearing the band not with me playing on it. So it's kind of like strange from that point of view hearing this stuff now (laughs). Musically, it's a pretty diverse record. There's some heavy parts, there's some slow, melodic parts; there's actually some cool chill vibe stuff on there. There's one song on there that's really industrial which is very different from anything I've heard the band do before so there's a good eclectic mix of different stuff on there, but it still sounds like Five Finger Death Punch to me."Despite being new to the band, James said his own personal involvement with the album writing and recording process was better than even he could have expected."There is a process,” he nodded. “They've been working with Kevin Churko for a long time and he has a sound as a producer and he has pretty much come up with Five Finger Death Punch as well. The band and producer have grown together, so there's definitely a working process there, understanding how each member of the band contributes stuff and how they work and when they wanna work and what it is they wanna do. Coming into this creative process I was hoping that I might be able to contribute somewhat to the stuff, but I never really had any overbearing expectation that I would even be included at all. When I was asked if I had any cool ideas and stuff like that I would play some stuff and start the creative process for some of the songs that you hear on the record and some ideas died in the water, but it was pretty cool. I wasn't expecting as much input as I was given to produce stuff. It's interesting to see how it all works. It's not that dissimilar to other situations I've been in where I have been in the studio. You come up with an idea, record it, and then you back and forth with the producer about what we can do to improve it, or whether it's a good idea or not. Some ideas you spend plenty of time on and they don't get used at all, so it really does depend on how these things take a life of their own all by themselves."In the full interview, Andy runs us through Afterlife and what to expect, how it is an improvement on previous releases, if there is a cover song on the album, recording music and acting in the new movie The Retaliators, settling in to an established band, finding that balance between mainstream and heavy music, touring plans and more.
Jason Hook was born and grew up in Canada. His mother enrolled him in piano lessons at 6 years old. It didn't take long until he knew the piano wasn't for him. So he asked his mother if he could take guitar lessons instead. His father bought him an imitation Les Paul from Sears and Jason started playing guitar. A neighbor was forced to part with a few Kiss records and gifted them to Jason. He would listen to them while looking at the covers and decided that he wanted to be Kiss. He asked his father to buy him a bass and a drum kit so he could start forming bands which he did throughout his school years. After graduating high school, he started sneaking into bars which led to the desire to start a bar band. It didn't take long before that band was formed and signed to Electra records. To his dismay, shortly after they were dropped by the label, leaving him to make a big decision. He would either have to get a “real” job or move to L.A. to give music another shot. With a couple hundred bucks, he dead-headed from Canada to L.A. where he had one friend. He crashed on his friend's couch and began playing guitar with everyone and anyone he could. It was with one of those bands where he met Jeremy Spencer. The two of them knew they wanted to be in a band together. But after several projects, decided to do their own things. Jason began playing with Alice Cooper and Vince Neil while Jeremy answered an ad and began writing songs with Zoltan Bathroy and formed Five Finger Death Punch. While 5 F.D.P. were about to record their second album, Jason joined them and the recorded the Platinum selling “War is the Answer”

This has been edited from an episode from our weekly show that streams LIVE @ 9pm Every Tuesday on Facebook LIVE, TWITCH and YOUTUBE.https://www.thosedamncrows.com/crowcastvideoFive Finger Death Punch, also abbreviated as 5FDP or FFDP, is an American heavy metal band from Las Vegas, Nevada, formed in 2005. The band's name comes from kung fu cinema. The band originally consisted of vocalist Ivan Moody, rhythm guitarist Zoltan Bathory, lead guitarist Caleb Andrew Bingham, bassist Matt Snell, and drummer Jeremy Spencer. Bingham was replaced by guitarist Darrell Roberts in 2006, who was then replaced by Jason Hook in 2009. Bassist Matt Snell departed from the band in 2010, and was replaced by Chris Kael in 2011. Spencer then departed the band in 2018 due to recurring back issues, and was replaced by Charlie Engen, making rhythm guitarist Bathory the only remaining founding member of the band. In October 2020, British guitarist Andy James became the band's lead guitarist, replacing Jason Hook. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Recorded at behind the bar in Planet Rock on 31 July 2020 this is the 3rd episode away from the radio station. Consequently, it has one of those little parental guidance stickers we used to use to look for to help us choose great records back in the '80s. The sound problems are pretty much sorted out, the only niggle is that the mic seems to have a small delay before the volume settles. I am not worrying too much, I am sure you are here for the music, not the chatter. This week we had a mixed bag of rock, metal, ballads and blues. We kicked off with Def Leppard's Demolition Man and then followed up with the Dead Daisies, Doug Aldrich's latest home. Other amazing guitarists to be found on the show include Jason Hook, Rory Gallagher, Lt. Joe Satriani, Tony Iommi, Mathius Jabs, and Ace Frehley. We let Anti-Flag and the Ramones take care of the punk. The SA music was supplied once again by Fokofpolisiekar and then also by The Burning. the third local track was the highlight of the show for me. It's a track called Porsche Roller, a one-off demo featuring the voice of Jack King Lawless, the prodigious talents of Adam Thomas and the guitar work and songwriting of yours truly. What's the point of having a podcast if you can't play your own shit :-) Check it out, let me know on TSORR Facebook page if you have any comments and check out the guitar work on Rock and Roll Angel. I am finding that the absence of the live radio environment has a massive drawback in that it leads to overthinking. I am committed to avoiding this pothole and just recording and releasing exactly as it happens. Artists featured: Rose Tattoo, Kreator, Kiss, Def Leppard, Rory Gallagher, Anti-Flag, The Winery Dogs, The Dead Daisies, Ramones, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, Rival Sons, Cold Chisel, Fire Horses, Fokofpolisiekar, Extreme, Thin Lizzy, Scorpions, Heaven & Hell, Halestorm, Motorhead, Buckcherry, Clutch, David Bowie, The Burning, The Four Horsemen, Accept, Five Finger Death Punch, TSORR, Rock Radio, Best show for rock
