The Detroit Red Wings and their young guns have clawed back into this thing, all while the NHL trade world had a massive bombshell deal. Tune in as we open (after commenting on the response to Kucherov's trip on Rasmussen) (00:00) by discussing the home Hockeytown win over Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens, including Dylan Larkin leading the way in his 700th game, Lucas Raymond's increasingly elite abilities, Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat, and Andrew Copp contributing (after Simon Edvinsson's block), & more (5:35). Next, Marco Kasper & Cam Talbot leading Detroit to a 2-0 win over Andrei Vasilevskiy & the Tampa Bay Lightning (even without Patrick Kane), including Kasper's redirect, Albert Johansson's fantastic play, Lilleberg's hit to J.T. Compher's head, a chippy game with Cirelli, Hedman & Co., and Nikita Kucherov's dirty trip on Michael Rasmussen's empty net goal (16:05). After that, a look at how the Red Wings rookies have been playing steadily better under Todd McLellan, including Elmer Soderblom, and what that means for future players like Nate Danielson & Carter Mazur - as well as a look at where Steve Yzerman's squad sits in the NHL wild card playoff race (28:45). Next up, a look at the NHL Quarter Century Team for the Detroit Red Wings (Steve Yzerman, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Osgood, Sergei Federov, Dylan Larkin, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Chelios, Brian Rafalski, Dominik Hasek), and whether Jimmy Howard or Mo Seider deserved a look (43:50), as well as an update on Axel Sandin Pellikka's plans to leave the SHL after this season to play for either Detroit or the Grand Rapids Griffins (48:20). We then jump into the insane blockbuster trade that happened in the NHL, as the Colorado Avalanche sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for Martin Necas (with Taylor Hall, Jack Drury, and other pieces coming into play thanks to the Chicago Blackhawks): what does this mean for MacKinnon, Makar & Co., how everyone did in the trade, whether the Red Wings can still sign Rantanen in free agency, where the Vancouver Canucks trying to thrade Elias Petterson and J.T. Miller fit into this, & more (51:40) before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:17:25) - enjoy! In Episode 36 of Invested in Hockey, we dive into the sixth week of the 2024-2025 NHL season, where injuries to major superstars like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and possibly Norris Trophy frontrunner Cale Makar are shaking up the league. Eric and Anthony discuss how these injuries are impacting teams and fantasy leagues alike. Is Nathan Mackinnon the concensus #1 player in fantasy hockey going forward? Let us know your thoughts. We also take a close look at teams in need of a turnaround, like the Nashville Predators, who face a big challenge hosting Edmonton before embarking on a tough four-game West Coast road trip next week. Other teams like the Senators, Bruins, and Utah HC are also fighting to break out of their mediocre starts where players like Dylan Guenther, Jake Sanderson, and Matthew Poitras have lots to prove. Eric sparks a great debate about Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar after MacKinnon's incredible five-assist night yesterday. Are they on a path to become one of the greatest duos in NHL history, potentially rivaling Hall of Famers Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom, who boast a combined seven Stanley Cups and Olympic gold medals? Anthony shares his thoughts on how this dynamic Avalanche duo ranks among the all-time greats, somewhere behind the legendary Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey stack. As always, we highlight key players on the rise, like Martin Necas, whose white-hot streak has boosted his Young Guns Rookie Card value to $25 CAD in the sports card world, having 12 points in his last 5 games. Come check us out under SportsCardsGTA this weekend the Toronto Sport Card Expo, where we'll be setup at booth #5606. The Toronto Expo runs Thursday through Sunday at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. We will have a wide variety of hockey cards and memorbilia along with lots of other sports cards! Also, Cole Caufield has extended - how does that compare to Lucas Raymond's eventual extension? The big story though is Alex DeBrincat - with the Ottawa Senators looking to possibly trade him, is he destined to come home to Michigan? What would Yzerman have to pay for in a trade, would Larkin & Raymond be ideal linemates, how would he fit into a future core alongside Mo Seider et. al.? Rodgers spent his first 18 seasons in Green Bay. NFL – NFL, other leagues balancing betting revenue, game integrity The NFL and other sports leagues spent many years staying as far away as they could from sports betting because they said it was necessary to protect the integrity of their games. Those entities now have a much different challenge. The biggest professional sports leagues today have high revenue-producing partnerships with sports betting companies that they want to maintain. The NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, NHL and others as well as broadcasters NBCUniversal and Fox have announced the formation of the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals Last Night Colorado Avalanche 2, Tampa Bay Lightning 1 (COL Wins 4-2) Avalanche 2, Lightning 1 – Avalanche dethrone Lightning to win Stanley Cup for 3rd time The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup after dethroning the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Avalanche beat the Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final behind a goal and an assist from Nathan MacKinnon and the cup clinching goal from Artturi Lehkonen. Tampa Bay fell two victories short of becoming the NHL’s first three-peat champion since the early 1980s New York Islanders dynasty. Colorado’s core led by MacKinnon, captain Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and longest-tenured player Erik Johnson finally got the job done after years of playoff disappointments. It’s the franchise’s third championship and first since 2001. Colorado Defenseman Cale Makar, who won the Norris Trophy, also wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He’s only the third player to do that and first since Nicklas Lidstrom won both in 2002 for the Detroit Red Wings. NHL – Daly hands Stanley Cup to Avalanche in Bettman’s absence NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly presented the Stanley Cup to Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog in Commissioner Gary Bettman’s absence. Bettman previously tested positive for the coronavirus and was unable to produce enough negative results to get back to the series in time. It’s the first time someone other than Bettman has handed out the Cup and Conn Smythe trophy since Bettman became commissioner in the 1993 season. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Arizona Diamondbacks 11, Detroit Tigers 7 Chicago White Sox 4, Baltimore Orioles 3 Chicago Cubs 6, St. Louis Cardinals 5 – 10 Diamondback 11, Tigers 7 – Varsho, Smith help drive Arizona’s 11-7 win over Detroit Daulton Varsho hit a three-run homer, Pavin Smith had a career-high four hits and three RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a series sweep with a 11-7 win over the Detroit Tigers. David Peralta also had three hits for Arizona, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Varsho’s homer was his 10th of the season, and came in a five-run sixth inning for Arizona. Former American League Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel made his debut for the Diamondbacks and gave up six hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever J.B. Wendelken (2-1) got the win for Arizona. Detroit starter Beau Brieske allowed five hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Eric Haase homered and had three RBIs for Detroit. White Sox 4, Orioles 3 – Cease strikes out 13, White Sox hold off Orioles 4-3 Dylan Cease struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings, Gavin Sheets homered and the Chicago White Sox avoided a four-game sweep, hanging on to beat Baltimore 4-3 after the Orioles scored twice in the ninth inning. The Orioles, aided by two errors by first baseman José Abreu, loaded the bases against Kendall Graveman with none out before Jonathan Araúz lined an RBI single. After pinch hitter Rougned Odor struck out, Cedric Mullins cut it to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly. Graveman struck out Trey Mancini, and the White Sox came away with the win after losing four straight. Cubs 6, Cardinals 5 – F/10 – Cubs overcome 5-run deficit to beat Cards 6-5, Flaherty hurt Willson Contreras hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning to drive in his third run of the game, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5. St. Louis led 5-0 but starter Jack Flaherty left after two innings because of right shoulder tightness, and the Cubs tied the score with a five-run fourth. The Cardinals have lost three of their last four games and seven of their last 10. Contreras hit a tying two-run single in the fourth and led off the 10th with an RBI single off Zack Thompson. Jessica Shepard and Kayla McBride scored 15 points each for the Lynx (5-14). Tonight Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury, 10:00 p.m. NCAABSB – Mississippi wins first CWS title by sweeping Oklahoma Mississippi scored twice on wild pitches in a three-run eighth inning and the Rebels won their first national baseball title, sweeping Oklahoma in the College World Series finals with a 4-2 victory. The Rebels became the eighth national champion since 2009 to come out of the Southeastern Conference. The trophy will stay in the Magnolia State for a second straight year. Mississippi State won last year. Ole Miss benefited from a runner interference call that took a run away from Oklahoma in the sixth inning. It also overcame a spectacular pitching performance by Cade Horton, who set a CWS finals record with 13 strikeouts. Golf – PGA – Schauffele wins at Travelers after Theegala’s double bogey Xander Schauffele won the Travelers Championship with a three-stroke swing on the final hole Sunday, hitting to 3 feet for birdie after rookie Sahith Theegala took two shots to get out of a bunker and made a double bogey in the group ahead. A stroke ahead entering the day, Schauffele finished with a 2-under 68 at TPC River Highlands to beat Theegala and J.T. Poston by two strokes. The Olympic champion had a 19-under 261 total. Theegala shot a 67, and Poston had a 64. Schauffele won for the sixth time on the PGA Tour and the second this season after teaming with Patrick Cantlay to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April. Golf – LPGA – Chun perseveres, holds off Thompson to win Women’s PGA In Gee Chun rallied after losing the rest of her once-sizeable lead, overcoming a bogey-filled front nine to win the Women’s PGA Championship when Lexi Thompson faltered with her putter. Chun shot a 3-over 75 for the second consecutive day at Congressional, but that was enough to win her third major title by a stroke over Thompson and Minjee Lee. Chun led by six at the tournament’s midway point. Then she lost a three-shot advantage in the first three holes of the final round. But Thompson botched a short par putt on No. 14, bogeyed the 16th and three-putted on No. 17. Tennis – Wimbledon – Could this be the year for a new Wimbledon men’s champion? It’s been two decades since the Wimbledon men’s singles championship was won by someone outside the quartet of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Could this be the year someone else earns that trophy? If that streak of titles collected by the so-called Big Four of men’s tennis does come to an end following this fortnight, 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz are among those who have demonstrated they are among the other contenders with a chance. There has been more variety among the women’s title winners lately, with seven players dividing the past eight Wimbledon trophies, including Serena Williams.
Don't be shocked when you finish listening to this interview, you tell yourself this is one of the best episodes you've heard on the Cam and Strick Podcast. The name Neil Smith is more familiar to some than others, depending on your age. But if you scroll through hockey history his name pops up everywhere. And we mean everywhere. From drafting Nicklas Lidstrom and Sergei Federov, to bailing Kevin Stevens out of an East St. Louis jail, to almost landing Eric Lindros out of the OHL, to even fighting with Mike Keenan and Mike Milbury. Seriously, this is just the tip of the iceberg with Neil Smith, there is so much more. He's the only one to lead the New York Rangers to a Stanley Cup since 1940 too so he brings some credibility as a hockey man, not to mention his draft excellence. Was he blackballed out of the NHL? His stories are endless, do yourself a favor, sit back and enjoy this installment of the Cam and Strick Podcast.

If you are a Detroit Red Wings fan, then this edition of the We Live Hockey Podcast is a must listen. Heck, I'm not even a Red Wings fan and I enjoyed the heck out of this particular podcast. In this very special and unique podcast, Lee and Travis interview Joshua Riehl and Jenny Feterovich, the producers of The Russian Five. Wings' fans, you know who these guys are as they all made a significant impact to your team. For those that may be too young to remember who these guys were, they were Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, and Slava Kozlov. If you ask me, these five ov's were dominant for the Wings for several seasons. In listening to the podcast, you will learn the following just like I did: - Both Lee and Travis are Flyer fans. Unfortunately for them, the Russian Five and the rest of their Wings' teammates swept their club in the 1997 Cup Final in route to their first Cup in 42 years. Sorry guys! - While Lee is a Flyer fan, he does tell us how he came to appreciate the Russian Five. Lee mentions that they did a lot for the game, especially in terms of how they showed the rest of the league that players from other countries could work together with the rest of their teammates to accomplish the ultimate goal. For me at least, this is a very interesting point because it really set the tone for clubs bringing in more Russians and other Europeans to their respective hockey clubs and helping to make the sport more inclusive. - As the podcast began, we learned that Jenny came from the Soviet Union and like the Russian Five, ended up coming over to North America for a better life. - Speaking of having a better life, Jenny and Joshua spoke about how rigid the Russian Five's lives were over in Russia. Could you imagine life being so bad in your country that you feel the need to get out and do so under the radar? I can't! - Joshua told us how his love for the Red Wings and the way their Russians played drew him to the game and make him turn away from baseball. You made the right choice, Joshua. Thank you, Russians! - If you're a Wings' fan or even a die hard hockey fan, than you probably remember the horrific limo accident that Konstantinov, team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov, and driver Richard Gnida got into just a few nights after the team won the Cup. It made Joshua realize just how fragile life was and that despite everything that happened on that awful night, these guys persevered in the biggest way. - As someone who is not a Red Wings fan, I did not know how much Wings' fans loved Konstantiov. Joshua mentioned that while fans loved their captain in Stevie Yzerman as well as the "perfect person" Nicklas Lidstrom, they really, really loved what Konstantinov brought to the table every night. - It was interesting to hear how much Joshua and Jenny risked to do this. It cost a lot of money to make, it was hard to conduct the interviews because of heavy government interference in Moscow, but you'll have to listen to hear more about this (Hint: 23:43 into the podcast) - In listening to this podcast, I really appreciated just how much effort and passion Joshua and Jennifer put in to get this documentary done. These two believed in the story and wanted to convey to everyone, not just hockey fans, how important the Russian Five were to both the hockey world and sports world in general.
Welcome, friends, to a very special edition of the Real Life Podcast. This week, the boys were thrilled to welcome former Oiler, Ladislav Smid, to the show to talk a little bit about hockey and a whole lot about life. In part 1 of the interview, we discussed Smid's reaction to getting traded to Edmonton from Anaheim, driving Nicklas Lidstrom around the city, the Battle of Alberta and a whole lot more. To start off part 1 of the interview, we started with a look at how Ladislav Smid became an Oiler in the first place and where he was when he found out he was traded. His reaction to finding out that he was moved for Chris Pronger is absolutely hilarious, and hearing his first-hand account of the deal is well worth your time. From there, we got into life as an Oiler and what it was like to find out that he would be sticking with the roster after spending the previous year in the AHL. In his eight years with the Oilers, Smid went through a wide range of new experiences, including being tutored by Jason Smith and Steve Staios which transformed his style of game and turned him into the player we all loved. From working on his English as a means to ingratiate himself to his new teammates to driving Nicklas Lidstrom around the city when the Red Wings were in town, Smid's interview was refreshingly open and honest and we know you'll love every moment. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

At 6'9", Zdeno Chara is the tallest person ever to play in the NHL. Chara was born and raised in Trencin, Slovakia. At the age of 17 he played Junior B hockey with Dukla Trencin. The following year he was picked up by Piestany of Division II in Slovakia while also spending some of his playing time with the national junior team and HC Sparta Praha. At the age of 19, Chara decided to move to North America, where he still had one year of major junior eligibility remaining. He suited up for the Prince George Cougars of the WHL. In 49 contests, he had three goals and 22 points. Chara wanted to familiarize himself with the North American game and to adjust to the smaller ice surface, having been selected 56th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. In 1997-98, Chara played 25 games with the New York Islanders, picking up one assist. He followed that with a 59-game effort the next year, scoring two goals and eight points. Chara played two more years on Long Island before being sent to the Ottawa Senators for the start of the 2001-02 season. Chara credits several of his junior coaches in Slovakia and Stan Butler in Prince George as being the people who were most influential in his development as a player, which has seen him rise all the way to a regular performer in the NHL and to his first NHL All-Star performance in 2003. In 2003-04, Chara established himself as one of the premier defensemen in the league while setting career highs in goals with 16 and points with 41 and was named runner-up for the Norris Trophy as league's top defenseman. As the following season ended, so did Chara's contract and tenure with the Sens. July 1, 2006 Zdeno Chara was signed as a free agent by the Boston Bruins and named captain of the club. In his first full season as a Bruin, Chara matched his career-high in points (43) and helped establish a rugged blueline corps in Beantown. The following season he established new career season-highs in goals, assists and points with 17-34-51 totals and was voted a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman. In 2009, not only did Zdeno Chara break Nicklas Lidstrom's strangle-hold on the Norris Trophy, but he joined exclusive company by becoming just the third Bruin, along with Hall of Famers Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque to win the prestigious award as the NHL's top defenseman. The Bruins captain anchored a defense corps that allowed the fewest goals against (2.32) in the league and led his club to a first place finish in the Eastern Conference with 116 points, the third best total in franchise history. Also a 1st Team All-Star, Chara set career-high marks for goals (19), assists (31), points (50) and plus/minus (+23). He would lead the Bruins and finish sixth among all players by averaging just over 26 minutes of ice time per game and was a force on the Bruins power play, recording 11 goals for third best among all NHL defensemen. In February 2010, Chara was captain of the Slovakian squad at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. The 2009-10 season was a difficult one for Boston. The team struggled to find the net, ranking dead last in the league for goals scored and Chara saw his offensive production drop to just seven goals for the season. Chara and the Bruins rebounded in 2010-11, finished the regular season in third place in the Eastern Conference and rode a wave of emotion into the playoffs. Anchored by Chara on the back end, the Bruins accomplished what no Bruins club had done in almost 40 years when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks to win the Stanley Cup. Chara would record 17 goals and 23 assists during the 2013-14 season. He would also represent Slovakia once again at the Olympic Games. This time held in Sochi, Russia, Chara would serve as captain and was his nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. In the summer of 2016, Chara would represent Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey. He and his teammates would surprise many by advancing all the way to the tournament final. Meet the very kind: Zedeno Chara.
