Debbie Sprinkle is an ordinary woman who serves an extraordinary God. She grew up in St. Louis where she met and married her husband and attended college. She became a chemist and worked in research for a number of years. Debbie's writing didn't actually start until much later when she and her husband moved to Memphis and she had retired from teaching chemistry. Then Debbie began leading Bible studies at her church. The quality of her weekly emails led to an invitation to join the Women's Speaking and Writing Team, and to attend the 2009 "She Speaks" conference. At that conference, Debbie and Kendra Armstrong became friends and out of that friendship, their first book, "Common Sense and an Uncommon God" was born. It was later renamed to "Exploring the Faith of America's Presidents." Debbie's second book is entitled "Deadly Guardian." She is currently working on several other stories--all mysteries or suspense--her favorite kind. The impact of gun violence in America is well-documented as 23,000 people in the U.S. were killed by a firearm in 2021, and firearms are now considered the leading cause of death for our nation's youth. For women, the statistics are even more dire, as the presence of a gun in her home makes her 3-times more likely to be murdered. And if her abusive partner has a firearm, femicide risk increases 1,000%. More than just statistics, the lives and futures of women are increasingly at risk from the American obsession with guns coupled with its pervasive misogynistic culture.Alicia Nichols, Deputy Director of the National Domestic Violence and Firearms Resource Center of the Battered Women's Justice Project, joins the conversation to explore the link between firearms and lethality risk in intimate partner violence relationships, as well as the myriad responses to gun violence that will improve safety for women and keep guns out of the hands of violent offenders.

In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad continues an ongoing critique of the for-profit health care system in the US and examines some of its deadly effects. Overdose numbers are far higher than in any other rich country and could have been avoided if it weren't for the collusion between drug companies, pharmacies, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies. Dr. Fraad looks at what other countries have done to mitigate the effects of their own drug epidemics, and calls for a more humane and just approach to addiction and treatment in the US, if only capitalism could get out of the way.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons -- PAHs -- are compounds that can be both good and bad. On the good side, they form the “bark” on a slice of brisket, which adds flavor. On the bad side, they can cause cancer, so it’s best to avoid them.PAHs are also bad for young fiddler crabs. In combination with direct sunlight, in fact, they’re killers.PAHs are among the compounds found in crude oil. When oil spills into the ocean, some of it settles to the bottom. Many of the compounds in the oil can remain in the sediments for years. None of those compounds is good for marine life. And PAHs are especially bad.A recent study found that juvenile fiddler crabs are among the organisms at risk from them. Researchers placed adult crabs that were ready to reproduce in tanks. The sediments at the bottom of the tanks contained PAHs, at levels that might be seen a few years after an oil spill.Female crabs carry their eggs outside their bodies. So as the crabs burrow, their eggs are exposed to whatever chemicals are mixed with the sediments. When the eggs hatch, the juveniles spend most of their time near the surface, where they’re exposed to sunlight. And the ultraviolet rays in the sunlight can cause a toxic reaction. The study found that adult crabs didn’t seem to be harmed by the combination of PAHs and sunlight. And neither did juveniles that weren’t exposed to the light. But most of the juveniles that did see strong daylight died -- victims of a toxic combination.

The areas victimized by racist federal housing policies in the 1930s are now among the most vulnerable to the severe impacts of climate change, according to a landmark study. And although the Fair Housing Act of 1968 banned redlining and housing discrimination in general, three out of four redlined communities rated "hazardous" 80 years ago are struggling economically today. Time was, the chief disasters that worried IT were natural disasters – things like fires, floods, earthquakes and tornados. In other words, you had to worry about your on-premises data center going down. But that’s changing, as more pieces of your data center move offsite. With Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) becoming more common, the ways you protect your data have to evolve. That’s especially true when it comes to the biggest IaaS provider of all, Amazon Web Services (AWS). The AWS public cloud and disaster recovery is the topic of this “10 on Tech” podcast, featuring Cloud Daddy CEO Joe Merces. He chats with ActualTech Media Partner James Green about the new ways you’re vulnerable in the cloud era, and how to keep yourself safe from these new threats. Highlights of the show include: The changing disaster recovery landscape How ransomware has forced new thinking about data protection Real-world examples of the frightening impact of ransomware What “security hygiene” is and why it’s crucial Why security in the public cloud is different Resource links from the show: Cloud Daddy -- https://www.clouddaddy.com/ Atlanta's ransomware attack may cost the city $17 Million -- https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/cybersecurity/atlanta-s-ransomware-attack-may-cost-the-city-17m.html The rise of targeted ransomware -- https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2018/09/11/the-rise-of-targeted-ransomware/ We hope you enjoy this episode; and don’t forget to subscribe to the show on iTunes, Google Play, or Stitcher.

Study after study has illustrated the danger posed by teen drivers because of their inexperience behind the wheel. But the latest study, released earlier this week by the AAA Foundation and AAA Texas, takes a new perspective-the hazards posed by teen passengers riding with teen drivers. For more on the study, I spoke with Doug Shupe, Senior Public Affairs Specialist with AAA Texas. For more information, or to read the study, log on to the AAA Foundation website at www.aaafoundation.org.
The top four causes of death in America each year are medically related. In order, they are: heart disease, cancer, stroke and lower respiratory diseases. The fifth leading cause? Accidents. A recent study conducted by the University of Texas showed that even though teenaged drivers make up only six percent of all the drivers on the road, they are involved in over 12 percent of all the fatal crashes. That statistic makes traffic crashes the leading cause of death for their age group. For more on this study, I spoke with Dr. Chandra Bhat, professor of Civil Archetecture and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas.
