Two films with very short titles in this episode, starting with a comedy favourite from the 2010s.Director Paul Feig broke out of movie jail with 2010's Bridesmaids - and he used his freshly-inked deal with 20th Century Fox to get his own take on a James Bond film to the screen. Thing is: how do you persuade studio executives that Jason Statham can be a comedy lead? And, come to think of it, how do you convince Jason Statham? As for 1986's F/X, here was a movie written with television originally in mind, until a producer read it and reckoned there was more to it. Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and even George C Scott were linked. But the final cast would lead to a solid hit - albeit one that led to questions over the film's title.Stories of both in this episode... Paul Feig has a thing about martinis.  The award-winning director and producer behind comedy blockbusters “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat” and “Spy,” is especially particular about what type of gin goes into the cocktail (note, he says, that there’s no such thing as a “vodka martini”). After spending years searching for the perfect gin to blend in his evening libation, Feig was motivated to launch his own brand, Artingstall’s, which was introduced earlier this year. Years in the making, Feig has been intimately involved with the project, from the development of the spirit itself, to the brand’s custom decanter and label. Now, as he noted in an interview in this episode, comes the hard part. As part of an expansive conversation, Feig spoke about how he developed a passion for cocktail culture, how he balances running a gin brand with his current film and television work and his role in marketing and communication initiatives. He also discussed the similarities between pitching a movie to a studio and pitching Artingstall to retailers and distributors, and other parallels between filmmaking and entrepreneurship. Show notes:  0:40: Interview: Paul Feig, Director, “Bridesmaids” & Creator, Artingstall’s Gin -- Feig sat down with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif, who opened the interview with a chat about the director’s appearance on a popular game show from the 1980s, how cocktail culture influenced his adolescence and embrace of refined lifestyles and how his search for a perfect gin led to him to a partnership with Minhas Distillery. He also discussed how his personality is incorporated into Artingstall’s package and label, why he’s wary of tapping his celebrity relationships to promote the gin and why he compares the business of distilled spirits to movie making. Later, he contrasted his experience as a filmmaker to that of a spirit entrepreneur and spoke about his ultimate goal for Artingstall’s. Welcome to our Summer Pop Culture Confidential special! We are thrilled to talk to Paul Feig, the director of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot and someone we have been wanting to talk to for a long time. With this years huge Summer release Paul Feig has taken on one of the most beloved comedy franchises: Ivan Reitman’s 1984 blockbuster Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis and a host of other comedy and acting greats. It is also his biggest project to date, massive in every way - from production to the audience expectations. Feig and co-screenwriter Katie Dippold have not written a continuation of the original Ghostbusters storyline but created new characters with their own origin story. The cast includes some of the best comic actors working today - Melissa McCarthy and SNL alumni Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. We speak to Feig about the unexpected reaction to the all female cast of the Ghostbusters reboot, his continuing work for greater female representation in both TV and film, Freeks and Geeks, and the fantastic story behind his jump to becoming a full-time stand up comedian at the start of his career.

THE WAIT IS OVER!  This week, Brian, John, and Elaine deliver part 1 of our epic Ghostbusters (2016) review.  This movie has been a lighting rod of controversy, setting up a war between fans of the original and Director Paul Feig and cast; with cries of "misogyny" and "femi-nazi" being thrown from various groups over the movie.  This movie is without a doubt the proverbial hornet's nest of cinema....And we are geared up to kick said hornet's nest very very hard.  So grab your proton pack, don't cross the streams, and enjoy part 1 of our epic 2 part review of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters.   Movie News! Batman: The Killing Joke Movie - Controversy grows over treatment of Batgirl in new animated feature film based on classic comic book. Ghostbusters (2016) Disclaimer In light of the controversial nature of the film, we felt it was necessary to give a bit of a disclaimer on our review. Our review of the film is an HONEST review.  All three of us watched the film and came to our own conclusions.  This is our opinion, you can agree or disagree with it.  But we welcome discorse and debate. Keep in mind, this is only a movie.  If the energry used to battle this movie was used to combat real sexism (ie. pay equality, etc.) a lot of those problems could be dealt with. Ghostbusters is a "meh" movie Brian and John hated it. Elaine didn't love it, but also didn't hate it Not nearly as terrible as the trailers lead us to believe. Cameos were pointless You could set your watch to the next cameo from an original cast member (estimated around 15-20 mins). Bill Murray quite literally phoned in his performance. Annie Potts was the only good cameo. The cameos took you out of the movie and reminded you that 1. this is in fact a remake.  And 2. that the original is far superior and acts as a cloud over the movie. Movie says "fuck you" to fans of the original while still marketing to them Studio manufactured the controversy by deleting youtube comments of anyone critical and only allowing sexist comments to pump up the manufactured narrative of sexism. The villain in the movie is the proverbial overweight, pasty, ghostbusters fan that the controversy was based around. To add insult to injury, the villain then turns into a a giant killer version of the Ghostbusters logo that is defeated by being shot in the dick. Sexism in the film The film does present men as being assholes or idiots. The positive side of this is that it does give male audiences a taste of some of the treatment that women deal with in other films. This does unfortunately get in the way of the story. Terrible writing and directing The female leads are fantastic comedians in their own right, but are hindered by terrible writing and directing. The movie suffers from very predictable and unfunny writing (ie: queef joke / wanton running gag) Direction is more akin to a Saturday Night Live improv sketch rather than a Ghostbusters movie. Holtzman (Kate McKinnon) shines through a lot of the bullshit, but unfortunately ends up coming across as overly goofy by the middle of the film. There are wasted opportunities to turn the movie into something positive. The mention of the fake ghost adventures tv show in a scene of the movie could have been used to break out into a much more compelling and a better story all around. PART 2 NEXT WEEK!!! Three teachers walk into a bar, onto the stage, plug in instruments and then…melt your face. No Small Children's remake of the classic Ghostbusters theme song can be heard in the new Ghostbusters movie released on July 15th, 2016! They released their third album, “Hold Tight, I’m Flying”, July 2015. Produced by Lisa Pimentel and mixed by legendary Bob Marlette (Rob Zombie, Black Sabbath, Filter, etc.), this latest album is heavier and more complex, but just as bold and unapologetic as their first two, “Trophy Wife” and “Dear Youth”; both available on iTunes and CDBaby. NSC released their fourth music video, Ghostbusters, with footage given to them them by Director Paul Feig. Their other videos include Might Get Up Slow, Drunk Creepy Guy and Big Steps. NSC’s animated, edgy and break-neck live show both invites you in and calls you out, all while you sing along to the fresh, yet familiar, refrains of their carefully constructed songs. Their glamorous matching dresses and bona fide command of the stage will have you leaving at the end of the night a little hoarse, with a smile, and a warm fuzzy feeling. “I was struck not only by their musicianship but by how well they engage an audience. Lisa and Joanie are a powerful pair of front women” -Alice Bag Razorcake Mag No Small Children is an all-girl band, or as they call themselves, a band. They were born on the playground in the spring of 2012. Elementary school-teachers by day, guitarist and singer Lisa Pimentel and drummer Nicola Berlinsky decided to start the band while covering recess duty. Three months later they had an EP, countless shows behind them and an east coast tour booked. By October 2013, bass player and singer Joanie Pimentel had moved to Los Angeles to join the group. With all three teaching at the same school, lunch breaks became band meetings, after-school times became rehearsals and holidays were reserved for touring. “Relatively new on the L.A. scene, all lady trio No Small Children have been tearing it up, one dive bar at a time” Aileen Frasier, The LA Beat 2015 In 2014, NSC released their LP, “Trophy Wife”, toured both east and west coasts and played three shows at SXSW. In 2015, along with their frequent California shows, they toured Colorado, the Midwest, and East Coast. 2016 brought them back the Southwest and Midwest, and they start their fourth East Coast tour on August 5., 2016. “It’s not unusual for kids to wear a T-shirt to school with their favorite band on it. But at this school., that T-shirt may also have a picture of their teacher — actually, three of their teachers.” NPR –Secret Lives of Teachers, 2014. These ladies eat, live and breathe music, and you can feel it in their songs. They create it, perform it, and then pass their love of it onto the next generation of music lovers.
