Tha Don also showed up to kick it. We wrapped with a mind-melting Twitch Only set to start the summer right - if you're not checking us during the live stream on Twitch you're missing out. Must Play damals - jetzt genau 30 Jahre her. B. Cox reviews Gang Starr's classic fourth album Hard To Earn as it turns 30. After the critical success of 1992's Daily Operation, Guru and DJ Premier took a brief hiatus to pursue individual projects. Guru launched his Jazzmatazz series and Premier became one of the most sought after producers in industry, working with the likes Jeru the Damaja, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas and KRS-One. Coming back to record their fourth, the group wanted to prove that they were versatile and wanted to show that they could stray from their jazz-sampled sensibilities on their previous album and could rock with a different sound.Heavily involved with the project was the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective that was aligned with the duo that included the likes of Jeru, the hip-hop duo Group Home, Big Shug, Freddie Foxx (Bumpy Knuckles), Afu-Ra among others. The project featured Jeru, both Lil Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker and Big Shug. Unlike Daily Operation, the album was produced under a wider variety of musical influences. The album featured two classic singles: "DWYCK" with hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth (which was supposed to be originally on Daily Operation and "Mass Appeal". The album was critically acclaimed upon release and reestablished Gang Starr as a force within hip-hop. It also served as a forerunner to a number of different albums over the next 18 months that were credited as being pivotal to the New York hip-hop scene being a power center once again in the hip-hop landscape. Whether you're an 80s baby or a 90s baby, this episode is for you. Whether you grew up on the Fat Boys or the Lost Boyz, this tribute is for you. D&D Studios is the most important studio in hip-hop history. Period. It's responsible for countless anthems such as Danger, Whutcha Want, Who Got Da Props, Ain't No Nigga, Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimas & Benz, Ante Up and DWYCK to name a few. It's responsible for many classic albums like Illmatic, Ready To Die, Enta Da Stage, Livin' Proof, The Sun Rises In the East and Return of the Boom-Bap. Whether it was produced by DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz, DJ Muggs or mixed by Eddie Sancho or Norty Cotto, the D&D stamp was official. Doug Grama and David Lotwin created hip-hop mecca. A place where stars were born and GOATs were made. Today, we celebrate D&D Studios and we're joined by 1-half of the D's, Mr. David Lotwin. We go behind the scenes, hear the stories, re-live the classics and play all your favorite D&D cuts. We also have special guests stopping by to share stories like DJ Premier, Russell Peters, Jeru The Damaja, Mark The 45 King and Craig-G. You'll hear what it was like when DJ Premier was in the studio creating classic after classic. You'll hear stories about Biggie and how Puffy went ballistic after finding a gun while recording there. You'll get to hear what it was like recording Enta Da Stage, Return of the Boom-Bap, Illmatic and other classics You'll hear about pre-fame Jay-Z being denied at the door because there were too many people inside the studio at the time. You'll hear about the late, great Big L, Sean P, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Guru. On episode 71, we celebrate hip-hop. We celebrate history. We celebrate D&D Studios. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

We get back to our series discussing who had the best three-album run in ‘90s hip hop, and this week we have Gang Starr’s Daily Operation, Hard to Earn and Moment of Truth on the table
The Album: Gang Starr: Hard to Earn (1994) Gang Starr's Hard to Earn dropped in the pivotal year of 1994, arguably the height of the Golden Era as it came alongside everything from Biggie's Ready to Die to Nas's Illmatic to OutKast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. Unlike those other debut albums, this was Gang Starr's fourth LP and by '94, they had established themselves as the (no pun intended) premier rap duo, avatars of a boom bap/braggadocio style that would help define an entire era. For DJ Premier, Hard to Earn marked the beginning of his imperial era, where the telltale sound of a Primo scratch was a mark of quality. Meanwhile, G.U.R.U.'s lyrical craft stepped up another notch (even if it was still "mostly tha voice" that got folks up). Fans will debate whether this was Gang Starr's best album but for Morgan and Oliver, it happened to be their favorite by the group. Aight? Chill. Hard to Earn was the pick of a dynamic duo of guests. First up: Vikki Tobak, author of the astounding new book, Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop, quite possibly the best rap photography book ever created. She was in town as part of the new Contact High exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography (which is up through August, come catch it!). As part of the exhibit, there's a wonderful documentary video that accompanies, assembled by other other guest: Joseph "Jazzbo" Patel. He and Oliver go back to the '90s when both were young writers at URB Magazine and by the '00s, Patel had moved into video content, becoming one of the most influential behind-the-scenes talents at places like Vice TV, MTV, The Fader and Vevo. (He and Vikki are now working on a docu-series based on Contact High). In tackling this album, the four of us discussed everything from the highs and lows of the jazz-hip-hop era of the early '90s to why we need to bring back answering machine/voicemail skits to how to properly pronounce "DWYCK." Texas native, Brooklyn crafted hip hop icon DJ Premier of Gangstarr dropped by to share his jewels on sustaining a successful career in the music game. Premier also reminisced on the early days of Gangstarr and having fist fights with his partner Guru who are still close to this day. However, Premier was not too fond of Solar who runs with Guru now, find out why. In addition to that get Premier's thoughts on D'Angleo, Angie Stone, being a hip hop artist on a major label before that was the norm, staying fit, pressing vinyl, his group NYG's, running a label, how the video for Dwyck came about, working & hanging with Christina Aguilera, turning down Limp Biscuit at first, getting drunk with Notorious BIG in 1992, and how his beef with Wynton Marsalis got settled. There is a whole lot more but you have to listen to find out exactly what. Does the French team have you dreaming of escaping to Paris this summer?…We feel you. If you are like us, you are probably still recovering from the amazing 2018 World Cup victory of Les Bleus. But let's not forget how this summer got HOT! Beyoncé and Jay-Z dropped a clip magnifique in the Louvre, and Virgil Abloh wowed us with the Louis Vuitton Spring / Summer 2019 collection. So, with all of this black excellence à la Française on display..France is once again looking like Disneyland for Black folks, right? Not exactly. As Daily Show host Trevor Noah and others have pointed out...it’s a bit more complicated than that. In this debut episode of Rebel Sisters Podcast, Nig**s in Paris, hosts Hélène Faussart from the group Les Nubians and friend Iota Vanne ask: Why do African Americans love Paris so much to begin with? And what is different about the black experience in France versus the USA? We hope you'll join us then. Luke Cage Episode 9 Review Podcast "DWYCK" Spoiler filled Synopsis Written by Christian Taylor Directed by Tom Shankland After his second bullet wound at the hands of Willis Stryker (Erik LaRay Harvey), Luke Cage's (Mike Colter) wounds begin to turn septic. As he reunites with Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) they become increasingly desperate to find a way of removing the Judas bullet shrapnel and in so doing they head back down south to Georgia and Doctor Noah Berstein (Michael Kostroff) as Luke begins to weaken. Elsewhere in Harlem, in the vacuum of Cornell Stoke's murder, an uneasy alliance forms between Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard), Shades (Theo Rossi) and Diamondback. At a meeting of the local crime bosses Diamondback kills all of them except Domingo Colon (Jacob Vargas) and only spares Dillard after she proves her worth. Misty Knight (Simone Missick) is hauled in front of a police psychologist who evaluates her breakdown on the job. As Knight is released and tasked to find Luke Cage, he arrives at Berstein's house where using Reva's data stick from Cage's chain Berstein hopes to try and remove the bullet fragments. As he lowers Luke Cage into a boiling tank of acid the pain becomes too much as the ECG flat lines!
