Welcome back to What Goes Around! This is the dance music special and we have the Crowd Controller himself DJ Billy 'Daniel' Bunter, if you are not familiar with this Rave legend then you really need to understand what a stalwart of the Rave scene he is. Daniel started his DJ career at the tender age of 14 playing the headline set at one of Londons most infamous clubs Labyrinth/2000AD at The 4 Aces in Dalston. Daniel grew up in the DJ booth watching the Rave scene evolve through many, many changes in style, mood and professionalism. It is estimated he has played to hundreds of thousands of people over the last 30+ years and remains a real force for positivity all these years later. So much so Daniel has founded a mental health charity to help those who are struggling in these difficult times. He has an incredible story to tell and we are delighted to have him on the show.We are also delighted to welcome Emma Warren to the show, a hugely experienced writer on music culture Emma has now written one of the finest books on music and dancing we have ever read, 'Dance you way home: A journey through the dance floor' is a transformative tome on dance music culture which serves the initiated and those that find dance culture baffling equally well. IF you have never got the dance bug this book will explain why it affects people so powerfully and if you have loved the clubbing life for years you will discover a beautiful love letter to the culture. It really is that good and Emma is delightful company.Plus Deb and Eamon are back discussing how the story of rave has been twisted and focused in many misleading ways, thankfully Eamon has found a missing piece of the puzzle in the form of an audio series that tells the Rave story from the perspective of the Midlands.Daniel's excellent mental health charity can be found here:https://safespacemovement.co.uk/Emma's wonderful book can be found here:https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571366033-dance-your-way-home/Reflection Media Art's excellent audio series by Daylight Robbery Radio Docs can be heard here:https://www.reflectionmediaart.com/films-1Like and subscribe and all that jazz. "The dance floor is a portal and a transmission tool in addition to being a technology of togetherness." The British author's new book, Dance Your Way Home, offers a sociocultural history of the dance floor. Emma Warren has been documenting grassroots music culture since co-founding Jockey Slut magazine in the mid '90s. From those early years to subsequent stints at THE FACE and Brixton's youth-run Live Magazine, her journey of personal growth has become intertwined with nightlife. In this episode, the UK author speaks with Aaron Gonsher, former editor-in-chief of the now-defunct Red Bull Music Academy, about her new book, Dance Your Way Home: A Journey Through The Dance Floor. Writing about how music thrives through in-person connections and physical spaces, she provides a social history of the dance floor while highlighting the power of communion. Their conversation is a fascinating and far-ranging one; they speak about writing from the heart and Warren's deep connections with nightlife communities. She also talks about how the dance floor acted as a palliative in times of personal strife. "As I was writing [the book] and working it out through the writing, I realised that the less my dad could move or had control over his body, the more I needed to dance and have control over mine," she says of her father's disability. "So, I feel this absolute connection to the strength which you bring on the dance floor: that core control, that tightening of your body, that loosening of your limbs when you're moving and just how important that was to me—and what a life saver, really." Warren is also the author of three other books, including Make Some Space: Tuning Into Total Refreshment Centre, Document Your Culture: A Manual and Steam Down: Or How Things Begin. Listen to the conversation to hear her thoughts on why we dance together and what dancing tells us about ourselves.

Women conductors are in the limelight this week with a film called “Tar”, which opens in cinemas today, starring Cate Blanchett depicting the life of Lydia Tár - a fictional world-renowned composer-conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. The American conductor Marin Alsop famously observed that women are more likely to lead a G7 country or become four-star generals in the US Army than they are to be the principal conductor of a big orchestra. Anita Rani speaks to one our listener Emma Warren who got in touch with us as she is the only woman on her choral conducting course at The Royal Academy and Joséphine Korda who has just been announced by Opera North as their latest Female Conductor Trainee. Yesterday we talked about Andrew Tate and other social media influencers who are spreading misogynistic messages online. Several listeners got in touch to tell us about how their children have come across this kind of material and with concerns about how best to talk about it with them. Anita is joined by Dr Emily Setty, Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey who does research in schools with young people about sex and relationships and Michael Conroy founder of Men at Work, an organisation that trains professionals how to have constructive dialogue with boys. Jenny Beavan has spent over 40 years dressing the greats of Hollywood for film and screen. She is an 11 time Oscar nominated (and 3 time Oscar winning) costume designer, whose work you will be familiar with from films such as Sense and Sensibility, The King's Speech, and Mad Max: Fury Road. She has just been longlisted for the BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. The film tells the story of Ada Harris, played by Lesley Manville, a cleaning lady who – unsurprisingly – travels to Paris, after she sees a Dior dress belonging to one of her clients and is determined to own one of her own. Jenny joins Anita to tell us about the process of recreating old Dior designs and the transformative power of that perfect dress! More than 25 years ago, the World Health Organisation made a commitment to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation across the world. Despite this, around eight thousand women and girls each day go through FGM. To understand why this is still happening, Anita Rani will hear from WHO researcher Dr Christina Pallitto and charity CEO Nkatha Mugao, who helps women and girls in Kenya who have been cut, and is working to stop FGM.

On the outside landing a job painting on the set design teams for channel 4’s tv show Hollyoaks and many kids programmes, her life couldn’t be better, right? Emma had no idea how much weight she carried from anxiety and imposter syndrome until this wakeup call shifted her whole life. This is a huge conversation and I can’t wait for you to hear Emma’s Story.   Emma’s Takeaways 1.If you’ve got a nudge to do something more then follow it. 2.You may have the perfect creative job in the eyes of society, but you know feelings in your core and if it's not truly you. 3.Being creative Is within you, not the job, you can make money doing anything these days, go follow it. 4.Cancer or any hardship can be a blessing in disguise. 5.Imposter syndrome is huge and most people have experienced it, bring it out into the light and talk about it. 6.Life’s so short, it can change in a heartbeat, try the damn thing that’s whispering in your ear, there isn’t a bad ending to creating art for this beautiful planet. And what’s the alternative? You’re listening and honouring yourself. 7.It’s ok to feel a rubbish mum at times, we all do. Sometimes we snap even when we’ve done all of the reading and mental work. it takes a lot to shake off habits you might have grown up believing it even not agreeing with. 9.Shredding the beliefs that are put on us as kids takes a lot of work to unlearn, give it time and trust you’re on the right path. 10.Our parents only know what they know. To celebrate our 3rd birthday, Stance Takes is back bringing you two live discussions on nightclub culture. We start with Beats, Racism and Strife as we explore prejudice and discrimination in the nightclub space over the decades. We examine how the commodification of black music intersects with racist door policies and politicized dance floors. We were joined by Grime legend Marci Phonix, writer and journalist Emma Warren, UK Father of the vogue house of Comme des Garçon Kartel Brown, and Soundsystem elder Clive Curniffe. The second talk covers the architecture and design of nightclubs. We talk about how the lack of accessibility to nightclubs raises questions as to how inclusive these spaces really are. The panel was made up of disability rights activist Joshua Hepple, Associate Professor of Design History at Kingston School of Art, Catherine Rossi, and award-winning teacher, architect and promoter Neil Pinder.
