Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
Today we present part one of a brand new chat between host Erik Woods and Patreon member Steve Kapicz on THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. Steve is one of three CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST patrons who signed up for the exclusive top COMPOSER TIER at the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon. He took advantage of the tier's exclusive perk to co-host a program with Erik Woods and play whatever music he wanted. As with Joe Wiles' episodes, and William Welch's episodes, Steve and Erik talked for a considerable time, so the show has been split into two parts. During this episode, William and Erik talk about choral scores, among other things. During the show, you will hear selections from FIRST KNIGHT (Goldsmith), THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (Poledouris), THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (Davis), and EVIL DEAD (Banos). I hope you enjoy the show. —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Michael Poteet, Nathan Blumenfeld, Daniel Herrin, Mike Kohutich, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
In today's program, it's our 2023 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018. Before we begin, I want to personally offer my thanks to the great team here at the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. Fourty-five new shows, including this one, went out this year, not including any new shows that go up until the end of the year. We passed the 500,000 downloads mark and we are 45,000 downloads away from 600,000 all time. We made it back to FM radio, albeit briefly. If I can remember correctly, only one episode went on the air at BUTE ISLAND RADIO before the s__t the fan! I'm hoping to get back on the FM dial sometime in 2024. I think that's where the show ultimately belongs—at least a show with this format—so I just need to find a place that wants me. We've been ranking in the top 200 all over the world. Today we are #6 in Cyprus. Thanks to all of our listeners in Cyprus! The point is, people are still listening and I owe much of our success to ... Jason Drury, Eric Silver, J. Blake Fichera, Robert Daniels, Randy Andrew, the voice of CSR Tim Burden, in-house composer David Coscina, and Ley Bricknell. And of course, I cannot forget you... the listener... thank you very much for spending some time with us today! So let's get into the program, and as we did over the past SIX years, this show is a collaborative effort. Each participating host will get a segment of their own on the program to play whatever festival score they see fit. On today's program, four CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST hosts join me again to celebrate the holiday season by playing Christmas-themed music from a wide variety of film, TV and video game scores. Join Jason Drury from THE ARCHIVE & TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, J. Blake Fichera from SCORED TO DEATH RADIO, Randy Andrews from THE ANIME SPECTACULAR & THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Eric Silver from THE 1UPBEAT, and me, Erik Woods, for our annual Yuletide spectacular. On the show today, you are going to hear selections from DEN FØRSTE JULEN I SKOMAKERGATA aka CHRISTMAS IN COBBLER STREET (Storaas), HOOK (Williams), ROCKY IV (Dicola), PREP AND LANDING (Giacchino), HOGWART'S LEGACY (Rakozy) and a special gift at the end of the show. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Douglas Lacey, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Michael Poteet, Nathan Blumenfeld, Daniel Herrin, Mike Kohutich, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Erik Woods (Cinematic Sound Radio) gets to join us to sum up the highlights of Don Davis' diverse film scoring career and afterwards, Woods gets to show off how he assembled other great podcasts that detail film/tv/videogame composing all in one giant network fortress! Best known for his collaborations with The Wachowskis and Joel Silver (Matrix trilogy, Bound, House on Haunted Hill), Don's Emmy-winning scores include everything from select episodes of Seaquest DSV and Star Trek: TNG to mini-series like House of Frankenstein & Peter Benchley's The Beast. He later worked on freaky telefilms like Murder in Greenwich and Hell Swarm and blockbusters like Jurassic Park III, Unisol 2, Ballistic & Behind Enemy Lines. We also get to talk about his mixture of electronic and hard rock/metal style cues, his recent international productions and his work as an orchestrator on and off again. Don't miss out on our dissect on this undervalued talent!

Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail including such topics as the new uniforms, deleted scenes, Kirk's death, the destruction of The Enterprise D and more. Also covered in great length is Dennis McCarthy's underappreciated score. WARNING: We do talk about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in this episode so if you haven't seen the new series yet, you've been warned; there are SPOILERS in this episode. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records. It had a generous amount of music on the album, close to 45 minutes worth with 16 minutes of Star Trek sound effects from the film. In November of 2012, GNP Crescendo released an expanded version of the score featuring two full CDs of music expanding the run time to OVER two hours. The score was recorded by Robert Fernandez at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M, McCarthy conducted the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. Mark McKenzie, William Ross, and Brad Warnaar provided orchestrations. The Executive Album Reissue Producer was Dennis McCarthy. The Executive Album Producers for GNP/Crescendo Records were Neil Norman and Melanie Clarkson. The Album Reissue Producers were Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson and Mark Banning. The Project Consultant was Lukas Kendall, with liner notes by liner notes by Jeff Bond and Lukas Kendall. The GNP Crescendo album is currently out of print! Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
In today's program, it's our 2022 Christmas Special. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018 and I want to thank personally J. Blake Fischa for making sure we did produce this show this year. I've been so ridiculously busy during the latter stages of this year that I didn't think I'd have time to put this together. I really thought that All Request Christmas was going to be our Christmas Special this year but Blake DM'd me on Twitter and ask if we were going to do the show. I said, "No". I got a reply back with just the letter "K". I know it's tough to reading tone online but I could just feel the disappointment. So, I slept on it, woke up the next day and wrote Blake back saying, "You know what... I got to thinking last night and I think we should still do the Holiday Celebration episode anyway. It's something that all of us at CSR can work on together. So, yes, we are going to do our annual Christmas show as well as the All Request Show." So there, you can thank Blake for this show and we will always put together an annual Christmas show for you from now on. I promise! Today we present part two of a chat between host Erik Woods and Patreon member, William Welch, on THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. William is one of three CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST patrons who signed up for the exclusive top COMPOSER TIER at the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon. He took advantage of the tier's exclusive perk to co-host a program with Erik Woods and play whatever music he wanted. As with Joe Wiles' episodes, William and Erik talked for a considerable time so the show has been split into two parts. During this episode, William and Erik talk about the music from some classic scores like Patrick Doyle's MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN and James Newton Howard's SIGNS. They also talk about some lesser-known scores like Mark Mancina's underrated score to Disney's PLANES and the relatively unknown THE HIGHWAY RAT by René Aubry. You'll also hear selections from BLUE PLANET (Fenton), GOD OF WAR (McCreary), NOW YOU SEE ME 2 (Tyler), and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (Arnold). I hope you enjoy the show. —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Mindtrickzz, Joe Wiles, Rich Alves, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Douglas Lacey, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Paul Helmuth, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Clint Morgan, Rudy Amaya, Eric Marvin, Stacy Livitsanis, Saulo Ferreira, Risev, Mark Anderson, Rick Laird. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. SOUNDTRACK ALLEY has become THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS! Two years ago this month, host and producer Randy Andrews brought his film music podcast SOUNDTRACK ALLEY to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. We've enjoyed the partnership immensely and his show has brought a new dimension to the podcast in the form of long-formed reviews and analyses of soundtracks. However, we felt the need to separate our version of the show from the version that he still produces on his own under the SOUNDTRACK ALLEY moniker. Therefore, all SOUNDTRACK ALLEY episodes produced expressly for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO will now be known as THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. The format of the show won't change. It will always remain a deep dive review into some of the best soundtracks of all time… scores that everyone should have in their collections… THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war. Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue "Into The Starscape" The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality. You can buy that version of the album HERE! Thanks to Jason Drury and Tim Burden for their assistance. And a big thanks to Intrada's own Roger Fiegelson for providing the updated album to play on this show for you. Enjoy the program! THE MATRIX by the Wachowski's began blowing minds twenty years ago on March 31, 1999. Don Davis' original score similarly sent anyone paying attention into a similar zone of the mind-blown. While the film was a watershed moment for the film industry, touching off copy-cat visual effects and pseudo-philosophical film endeavours, Don Davis' post-minimalistic score, while still appreciated to this day in its own right, sadly did not start an parallel trend in film music composition. Erik Woods, Dane Walker and Christopher Coleman reflect on seeing the film for the first time, its personal impact, the electronica-filled soundtrack, and the power and sticking-power of Don Davis intricate original score.Episode Highlights07:16 - Experiencing The Matrix18:27 - The effect of the soundtrack23:59 - The ground-breaking score40:32 - Who is this "Don Davis?"44:09 - Does The Matrix endure?56:08 - The Matrix todayMusic Selections 00:00 - "Main Title/ Trinity Infinity" (The Matrix) - by Don Davis18:07 - "Dragula" (The Matrix Soundtrack) - Hot Rod Herman Remix20:25 - "Spybreak (Short One)" - (The Matrix Soundtrack) - by The Propellerheads21:32 - "Prime Audio Soup" - (The Matrix Soundtrack) - by Meat Beat Manifesto23:23 - "Bait and Switch" - (The Matrix: Deluxe Edition) - by Don Davis31:05 - "Main Title/ Trinity Infinity" (The Matrix) - by Don Davis33:56 - "Short Ride in a Fast Machine - Fanfare for Orchestra" - by John Adams37:48 - "Mona Lisa Overdrive" (The Matrix Reloaded) - by Don Davis and Juno Reactor43:57 - "Mix the Art" (The Matrix: Deluxe Edition) - by Don Davis66:05 - "Ontological Shock" (The Matrix) - by Don DavisFind and Follow:Follow Dane Walker on Twitter - @maestrodane or on Letterboxd @maestrodaneFollow Christopher Coleman on Twitter - @ccoleman or on Letterboxd @clcolemanFollow Erik Woods on Twitter - @cinsoundradioFollow The Soundcast on Twitter - @audiosoundcastFollow Tracksounds on Twitter - @tracksounds Spotify: Find our Spotify Companion Playlist here!
