Our beloved Fr. Ernie reflects on Bartimaeus leaping up to follow Jesus even though he doesn't know that Jesus is headed to the cross. Are you willing to follow Jesus into the unknown?
12-14-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program explaining why Major League Baseball went out of its way to implement a soft salary cap in the form of a luxury tax and the reasons the league insisted it needed to be done. John then calls to task the same sport for allowing for the most clear manipulation of the very thing it seemed insistent on preventing. Catchers' framing is cheating, just cheating that is legal and not frowned upon. So apparently is deferring a player's agreed to salary for no other reason than to manipulate the luxury tax number. Another example of selected crimes that are okay. John makes a case of why Draymond Green continues to find himself in trouble with the NBA. Maybe he really does not want to play anymore. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about Jack Dempsey, Marcel Dionne, the Miami Heat, Mike Gartner, Steph Curry, Ernie Davis, George Gipp, Elston Howard, and Roger Maris.

Today I had the pleasure of having conversations with four coaches associated with the Big 44 Ernie Davis / Floyd Little All-Star Classic Football Game. First, I spoke with Coach Steve Virkler, long-time Owego Football Coach, Section IV and State Level Football icon, who is now retired but still playing an instrumental role in making the Big 44 Ernie Davis / Floyd Little All-Star Classic Game a success.Today I also had a conversation with three guest coaches who will be leading the teams playing in Sunday's Big 44 Ernie Davis / Floyd Little All-Star Classic. two teams in this All-Star Classic. From Team Little, head coach Nick Patterson, first year Henninger head coach but longtime coach of the Marcellus Mustangs, from Section 3. Nick's motto is Commitment, Hard work and Fun. From Team Davis, head coach Mike “Built Ford Tough” Ford and current SV head coach since 2013, where he has coached back-to-back state champions in 2018 and 2019. Also from Team Davis is Defensive Coordinator Tommy “High Energy” Baleno and current Union Endicott head coach since 2013. All three of our coaches were former BC Jets (1999). I am proud to say I coached Mike and Tommy directly as their defensive backs coach. I also coached Nick indirectly. This podcast was established to maximize your Section IV Football experience, regardless of your role, past or present. Back in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused worldwide angst and turmoil, a show debuted on Apple TV+ that emphasized the importance of hope and believing in yourself. “Ted Lasso,” which recently concluded its third season, has been a feel-good television hit from the first episode. Early in the third season, the show introduced a new character, Zava, who was never lacking in confidence and self-belief. While Zava's bravado jumps off the screen, fans of the show might not know that the real-life actor who plays Zava is Maximilian Osinski '06, who never played a minute of soccer in his life. On this “'Cuse Conversation,” Osinski, who earned a bachelor's degree in drama from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, discusses his breakout role on “Ted Lasso” and how he overcame his doubts about whether he could play the world's greatest soccer player. Osinski shares why Syracuse University was his dream school, recalls his first role in a major motion picture: as former Orange football standout Gerhard Schwedes '60 in the Ernie Davis '62 biopic, "The Express," explores how being born in a refugee camp to immigrant parents inspired him to pursue his dreams and more.
[NB: Due to file-corruption issues, this episode's sound isn't stellar; apologies for any inconvenience!] Critics were kindly disposed towards The Express, a well-meaning Ernie Davis bio-pic that seems to count on knee-jerk positive responses to 1) sports movies that 2) defy bigotry. It's done well, mostly, even though the dialogue really isn't how people speak to each other, mostly, and the traditional football-feelm structure wastes certain excellent actors while giving others more than they can handle -- so we're landing on "creditable, but not crucial." The Quaidosity is a more ambiguous prospect; after SDB regrettably uses the phrase "liminal space," we ponder the changing nature of the "qua" in "Quaid Qua Quaid," and DQ's transition from rakish pilot to avuncular coach/cop. Will Roy Williams-branded cliché containers, teratomae of movie rage, and the birth of a weird Brittany Murphy runner add up to a victory for our side? John Wooten truly is a legend. Coming into the NFL in 1959, he blocked for Jim Brown, played for Paul Brown, and was a key part of the 1964 Cleveland Browns NFL championship team. Hear him share stories of his friendships with Ernie Davis and Muhammad Ali, including great info on the famous "Cleveland Summit" with Ali, Jim Brown, Bill Russell, and many other sports superstars. In college, he helped the Colorado Buffaloes to the Orange Bowl. John worked as a scout for the Dallas Cowboys for 16 years, then worked for the Eagles and Ravens. He now chairs the Fritz Pollard Alliance. He worked with Commissioner Pete Rozelle and other NFL legends to establish an important program to develop African-Americans for coaching and front office positions. John's amazing story -- which includes working with Pete Rozelle to avoid filing a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL in the 1960s and Clemson mailing a threatening letter to Colorado before the 1957 Orange Bowl because he and a teammate were African-American -- is told in this episode.
