Anyone who has frequented a gym or seen a cardio machine lately has probably seen reference to a "fat burning zone" with regard to heart rate. This is an interesting marketing scheme and leads to a foundational misunderstanding of how the body uses fuel at different intensities. All that to say, you're probably in a fat burning zone as you read this! And as you sleep, as you sit watching TV, even as you walk to the bathroom. It is misleading to say that one must keep their exercise intensity at a lower limit in order to "burn fat," which many equate to weight loss. We're here to help explain the virtues of different exercise intensities (not just for weight loss) and how to maximize caloric burn, muscle stimulation and generally just feeling good while moving your body...without feeling like you have to stick to a specific "fat burning zone." Erin Green is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, recovering professional triathlete and owner of Erin Green Racing and Nutrition in Boise, Idaho. In this podcast, we're going to talk about the “fat burning zone,” which is something you've probably heard about many times. When I first got into fitness, I read that if you're doing cardio to lose fat, you better be doing it in the “fat burning zone.” If you don't, proponents claim, your cardio is going to be a lot less effective, or maybe even completely ineffective. You'll simply end up burning through the glycogen in your muscles or the carbs in your blood, leaving your body fat untouched and unscathed. This idea has stood the test of time, too. It's been around for at least 50 years now, and many people think the fat burning zone is the ticket to losing weight. As you're going to learn in this podcast, the fat burning zone is largely a myth. Lower-intensity cardio that burns a larger proportion of fat isn't necessarily better than higher-intensity exercise when it comes to overall fat loss. That doesn't mean you have to do a lot of high-intensity cardio either, though. Find out why by listening to this episode! A common thing to hear around gyms or running circles many years ago and still to this day (albeit far less common these days), is this idea around a magical "Fat Burning Zone".The body has a number of energy systems that it draws on to help fuel your body during everyday movement, as well as intentional exercise. At lower intensities, the body has more time to process its fuel and shuttle it to the working muscles and it was this that "fueled" (pardon the pun) the idea that telling people to work at lower intensities would help to see them lose more fat during their workouts and exercise. In this weeks episode we talk in more detail about this idea and whether there is any truth to it or if it is a complete myth and what you can do to tailor your exercise to best suit your goals.I hope you enjoy the episode and if you did and haven't already, please go and give the podcast a quick review and 5 star rating as it would mean the world to me and then DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE to make sure you never miss an episode!!!Join the tribe and become a NO BREAKFAST CLUB member today and receive daily workouts sent directly to your email, discounts on products and services and MUCH more planned in the no too distant future. We’ve been led to believe that when exercising, there’s a “ Fat Burning Zone” that we must be in to burn the most body fat. We even have expensive gadgets, charts and fitness trainers to that measure our heart rate so we can get into this magical fat-burning nirvana. It’s a lot of hard work for no results! In this episode Barbara McDermott dispels the myth of the fat-burning zone and the most important factor that is required to burn body fat during exercise.Read the article version of this podcast here:
“Fat Burn” – It’s a standard program on most pieces of cardiovascular equipment: Treadmills, ellipticals, steppers and more have had this built-in workout option for decades, because, let’s face it, fat-loss is a top exercise goal. Personal trainers have also pushed the fat-burning zone on their clients for years, claiming it is the best way to maximize weight loss. If equipment manufacturers and fitness professionals both say it’s true then it must be, right? 100% wrong. Listen to this episode of Fitness Disrupted to find out why the fat-burning zone is complete “fuzzy math” and may be the very thing keeping you from achieving your weight-loss goals. The thing with fat is that it takes a bit longer to turn it into energy so once you start to move or exercise your body starts to switch into burning more carbohydrates because they are more readily available, I know you want to burn more fat but it’s okay because as you move or start to exercise the percent of energy coming from fat is going down but the overall number of calories you’re burning is going up.

First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Mike asks: Just wanted to know your opinion on Naked juice? Pam asks: I really enjoy dry roasted, in the shell, unsalted peanuts. Do you know if microwaving the peanuts for a couple of minutes will eliminate the afflatoxin? In my response to Pam, I talk about Inner Circle Podcast #1 - Is Microwaving Food Bad? This is the form of flower pollen extract I recommend to Joe Joe asks: I've heard you tout the benefits of pollen extract paired with zinc for increasing testosterone levels. I went to my local health food store and couldn't find pollen extract. I did find Bee Pollen (nature's way brand). Is there an appreciable difference between the extract you suggest and the bee pollen that is readily available? Nicki asks: Today during the Tour of California coverage elliptical chain rings were brought up. Is there any benefit for triathlon? Will it help to save legs for run? Jeremy asks: I heard the Ben Greenfield podcast recently about colostrum so I ended up here: http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#colostrum. My question is can you tell me why this product is better than, say, the Swanson vitamins brand? The one you recommend is from goats, and most others seem to be from cows. Also, it appears yours is almost 1500 mg which is three times the 500 mg on the Swanson brand. Jackie asks: Hi Ben. I've heard chia seeds have all the essential omega-3/omega-6's. Is this true, and are they in the correct ratio? Can chia seeds replace fish oil as a vegetarian option? (And are they better to or comparable to flax seed?) Mark asks: Just bought a new stationary bike trainer (with Power Meter) to add additional cross-training to my marathon training. Love the bike and the additional training at odd hours and bad weather is great. The problem I'm having is the toe clips (I think), I believe they are causing achilles pain that I feel when I run. The pain is real close to the heal. I switched shoes but that didn't make a difference. I lowered the saddle that didn't make a difference. I've decided to remove the toe clips next. Any ideas that might help? hksparky asks: As I've learned we train at the top of the Fat Burning Zone in order to teach our bodies how to burn fat. (1) Why bother teaching our bodies that when we race well into our Carb Burning zone? What race benefits do I get if my body will never see that low HR in a race? (2) Is it possible to train my body so that the top of my Fat Burning HR zone allows me to run at my race pace? (3) When you run your 1:30 Half Marathon in the Half Ironman's are you burning predominately Fat? Paul asks: I am planning on running a 50 mile ultramarathon. My question is what type of training would your recommend. I would think 5 days of running per week with some type of interval/hill work each week, but not sure. Also with high running mileage I assume that cross training would be minimal? Paul asks: I had something really strange happen to me after a race recently. After completing a 14 mile trail race, I took a seat. When I stood back up and reached down for my water, I got this crazy taste in my mouth. To me it tasted like my fillings. My hands also seemed to tingle. It lasted about a minute or two. Granted, I was a bit undertrained, and probably a bit dehydrated, but never had this happen before. Any clue? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
