Why do we find it so hard to exercise despite knowing how good it is for us? Is sitting really the new smoking? And what can we learn about movement from studying populations who live more traditional lifestyles? My guest today is the brilliant Daniel Lieberman, Professor of Biological Science and Chair of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. His research studies how and why the human body is the way that it is, focusing on the evolution of physical activities such as walking and running and their relevance to health and disease. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and three books, including his most recent, Exercised: Why Something We Never Evolved To Do is Healthy and Rewarding. In this conversation, we cover so many fascinating topics and explore the powerful idea that humans have not actually evolved to exercise. We compare the sitting habits of modern humans with more traditional societies and Daniel shares why it may not be how long we sit for that is causing us problems, but more the way in which we choose to sit. We also talk about the profound importance of maintaining strength and activity as we age, the relationship between movement and cancer, the truth about barefoot running and minimalist shoes and the concept of 'mismatch diseases' - this idea that our modern environment is in direct conflict with our evolutionary design, and the impact this is having on our wellbeing. Throughout the conversation, Daniel challenges many common beliefs that exist around health, and offers us evidence-based, practical strategies for building a healthier relationship with physical activity. Whether you're interested in the science of movement, looking to build sustainable exercise habits into your life, or simply curious about how our ancestors lived, this is a truly wonderful conversation with one of the world's most highly respected experts. Are hunter-gatherers happier than people in modern society? Has all of our material progress led to a genuine improvement in well-being, or is something amiss? These questions lie at the core of the meaning crisis, and more broadly, the metacrisis—a series of interrelated challenges facing civilization today. Evolutionary anthropologist Dr. Vivek Venkataraman joins us to examine the lives of both prehistoric and contemporary hunter-gatherers, shedding light on the trade-offs that accompanied humanity's transition to larger and more complex societies. Drawing from his extensive experience living with and studying the Batek people of Malaysia—a modern hunter-gatherer community—Dr. Venkataraman helps us explore the contrasts in work-life balance, social relationships, mating dynamics, cultural values, and collective decision-making between their way of life and modern civilization. The discussion ultimately probes whether the course of human history was inevitable, shaped by game-theory dynamics/incentives, and considers what lessons we might learn from hunter-gatherer societies to address the challenges of our present and future. Christopher talks to Dr Sheina Lew-Levy of Durham University about the educational practices of modern hunter-gatherer communities.
Rewilding is about seeking a reciprocal relationship to the environment and to one another. Material and cultural conditions kept humans in relative check with their ecologies for potentially millions of years, so what were they? If we are to understand this, we must hold up a lens and look at the diversity of hunter-gatherers (both past and present) to fully realize what their cultural and environmental limitations were–and are–today. Why did some abandon that way of life while others have fought to the death to defend it? What led humans to switch from one subsistence strategy to another, and what were the social and ecological effects of these changes? Is it possible to fully know? What do we know? To talk about these core rewilding questions with me, is Dr. Robert Kelly.Dr. Kelly first became involved in archaeology in 1973, as a high school student. He received his BA from Cornell University in anthropology in 1978, his MA from the University of New Mexico in 1980, and his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1985. He has taught at various Colleges since 1986; from 1997 until retirement in 2023 he taught at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Kelly is the author of over 100 articles, books, and reviews, including The Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers, The Fifth Beginning, and Archaeology, the most widely used college textbook in the field. He is a past president of the Society for American Archaeology, past editor of American Antiquity, North America's primary archaeological journal, and past secretary of the Archaeology Division of the American Anthropological Association. He has been a distinguished lecturer at many universities around the country and the world, including Argentina, Germany, France, Finland, Norway, Japan, and China, and he has worked on archaeological projects in Nevada, California, New Mexico, Kentucky, Georgia, Maine, Chile and, for the past 25 years, Wyoming and Montana. He has received over two million dollars in funding, with multiple grants from the National Science Foundation. Since 1973, the archaeology, ethnology, and ethnography of foraging peoples has been at the center of his research.Notes:Robert Kelly, Professor Archaeology at University of WyomingThe Fifth BeginningThe Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers: The Foraging Spectrum (Revised) CARTA: Violence in Human Evolution – Robert Kelly: Do Hunter-Gatherers Tell Us About Human Nature?ANTHRO, ART, (CLOVIS) and the APOCALYPSE: Live from the field with Dr. ROBERT KELLY | DIH Podcast #1Human Behavioral Ecology (Cambridge Studies in Biological and Evolutionary Anthropology, Series Number 92) 1st EditionSupport the show
James Suzman lived with a tribe of hunter-gatherers to witness how an ancient culture survives one of the most brutal climates on Earth. His learnings may surprise you. What do you imagine life was like for hunter-gatherers throughout human history? You might guess that daily life for them was a constant struggle between eating and being eaten in a world where surviving was a full-time job. But anthropological research suggests that probably wasn't the case. When the anthropologist James Suzman went to the Kalahari Desert to study the Ju/'hoansi hunter-gathers, for example, he found that they worked only 15 hours per week, and that much of that time was spent on activities that many people in the modern West consider leisure, like hiking and fishing. Of course, hunter-gatherers experienced plenty of hard times throughout world history. But a general theme has emerged from anthropological research on hunter-gathers both contemporary and ancient: Rather than being a constant battle for energy between people and their environment, life was more of a continuous flow of give and take between species, and leisure was part of the fabric of daily life. As Suzman told us, looking at the lives of hunter-gatherers can help us rethink the ways we conceptualize work and society. This week, Dustin chats with Bolaji Oyejide from Hello Audience about the concept of demand desperation and the need for B2B revenue organizations to shift from a focus on demand capture to demand generation. He uses the analogy of hunter-gatherers and farmers to illustrate the limitations of traditional marketing approaches and the importance of long-term thinking. Bolaji emphasizes the need for marketers to balance their time between fetching water (demand capture) and building wells (demand generation). He also suggests that marketers should focus on building association and affinity with their audience by evangelizing the problem and providing valuable insights. He introduces his reality series, Demand Wars, as an example of how marketers can entertain and engage their audience while making their brand their favorite. You can reach out to Bolaji via his LinkedIn profile if you have any questions or insights on the topics discussed today. Also, check out Hello Audience's page to learn more about their work.
A good life isn't necessarily a comfortable, easy life. Neuroscientist Tj Power knows that an element of effort and challenge is vital in keeping our minds happy. In this chat with Fearne, Tj explains why it's an issue for our mental health that the modern world enables us to get dopamine hits with zero effort. Similarly, he reckons being bored is a really solid antidote to being overstimulated and anxious. They talk through ways to naturally boost and balance brain chemicals like oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, using his science-backed DOSE method. Plus, Tj offers tips on how to reinforce positive behaviours and habits rather than dwelling on the shit parts of life. TJ's book, The DOSE Effect, will be out later this year. Let's be honest: 'Gatherer-hunters' doesn't quite roll off the tongue. And a new study from up in the Andes doesn't prove we've been plant-based all along.

We expect a lot from parents, especially from mothers. “Maternal instincts” are such, we are told, that mothers should gain almost literal superpowers from the joy of parenting. Unfortunately, many parents face a different reality. Having children can be one of the most stressful times of life, amplified by feelings of guilt and inadequacy. Why is this? Is this an inevitable part of the human condition? Or is the fault in our modern society? And how would we know the answer? To address these questions, anthropologists have started comparing family lives in industrial societies with those of the last remaining hunter-gatherers. Nikhil Chaudhary is one such anthropologist. A researcher at the University of Cambridge, he recently co-authored a remarkable paper on what we have learned about the family lives of hunter-gatherers. I invited him on the show to discuss the findings and their implications. So what is family life like amongst hunter-gatherers? Chaudhary's research paints a fascinating picture. Indeed, industrial societies can learn a lot from them. But not everything is easy for them, either. In addition to parenting, our conversation touched upon themes from monogamy and polyamory to parental grief, health spending, and the stark contrast between human and chimpanzee mothers. In this episode of Ancestral Health Today, we hear from Miki Ben-Dor about how our Paleolithic ancestors ate and lived, and what it means for the optimal diet and social structure of modern humans .Miki received his PhD in paleoanthropology when he was 67 years old, and since has made a name for himself publishing and speaking for both academic and popular audiences. His paper, "The evolution of the human trophic level during the Pleistocene", became the most-cited paper in 2021 in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. He has presented his work at numerous conferences, including several times at the Ancestral Health Symposium. And his recent book, "Live Paleo Style" takes a fresh look at how the mismatch between our evolutionary origins and the circumstances of modern society manifests itself not just in diet and health, but more broadly in social and emotional life.In this discussion. we will dive in to the paleoanthropological evidence that humans evolved as hunters and meat eaters and that meat remains the food we are best adapted to eat for health. As you'll hear, the evidence takes many different forms -- including archeological, anatomical, physiological, and ecological findings. We'll go beyond diet, to consider the cultural and behavioral implications of our background as hunter-gatherers, and what that suggests for increasing human happiness and flourishing.Takeaways* Humans evolved as hunters and meat eaters, supported by various forms of evidence.* The transition from plant eaters to meat eaters was driven by environmental changes and the availability of large animals.* Physiological evidence, such as stomach acidity and fat cell structure, supports our adaptation to a meat-based diet.* The decline of megafauna due to human hunting led to the need to hunt smaller animals.* Hunter-gatherer societies exhibit principles of equality and autonomy. Hunter-gatherer societies had a sense of autonomy and decision-making that allowed individuals to choose their actions without external influence.* Hunter-gatherers had a relatively small amount of work time and more leisure time compared to modern societies.* Modern work structures with hierarchy and lack of autonomy can lead to stress and dissatisfaction.* Finding a balance between material abundance and autonomy is a challenge in modern society.* Building and maintaining a sense of community is important for well-being and longevity.* Spontaneity and autonomy go hand in hand, allowing individuals to make choices freely.* Resolving disagreements and conflicts can involve mobility and forming new groups.* Ongoing research projects focus on understanding prey decline and the impact of human activities on the environment.References and links:* Blog and research links: https://www.paleostyle.com/?p=2212* Book: "Live Paleo Style: Overcome the Modern Mismatch to Regain Your Natural Wellbeing". https://www.amazon.com/Living-Paleo-Style-Ancestral-Modern-Wellbeing-ebook/dp/B0BTDKVX1V/ref=sr_1_1?crid=BCVYOPG9HKUK&keywords=miki+ben-dor&qid=1702834665&sprefix=miki+ben-dor%2Caps%2C246&sr=8-1Here is a guide to topics discussed in this podcast episode:Time Topic00:07 Introduction06:35 Transition from plant eating to meat eating12:08 Physiological evidence21:50 Role of fire and cooking28:15 Variability in human diets35:10 Causes and effects of the megafauna extinction48:48 Human adaptation to agriculture51:12 Social structure of hunter-gatherers58:05 Sharing, Autonomy and Decision-Making in Hunter-Gatherer Societies1:01:20 Work and Leisure in Hunter-Gatherer Societies1:03:21 Mismatch and stress in modern work life1:05:21 Balancing material abundance and autonomy in modern life1:09:00 Building community and maintaining relationships1:14:00 Resolving disagreements and the role of mobility1:15:35 Miki's current research (edited) Get full access to Ancestral Health Today Substack at ancestralhealth.substack.com/subscribe
In part 2 of this series, Miyanovich and Marean discuss: how critical theoretical work takes years, the reality of increased conflict for coastal/riverine hunter-gatherers, the realities of weaponry stimulating progress, tribalism and pastoral conflict, and the effects of sea-levels declining from 190 - 135,000 years ago on South African Homo sapiens.

It was a week of continuing hot action in the Trump prosecutions, combined major lawsuits not involving the former President. An awesome set of guests–Peter Baker, Erin Burnett, and Josh Marshall–join Harry to break it all down, starting with the odiferous indictment of Hunter Biden on rarely brought charges following a political outcry from House R's. Should we go back to a world before civilisation? Looking for a link we mentioned? It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesWith high rates of infanticide, senicide and disease, not many of us pine for the era before human civilization, farms and nations. Yet anthropologists Yuval Harari and Jared Diamond have called the agricultural revolution a"trap"and humanity's "worst mistake”, arguing hunter gatherer life was more leisurely and free, as humans were not tied down to private property or oppressed by hierarchy. Is there a way to keep the benefits of industry and technology while also living as freely as our untamed ancestors? Should we go further and rewild to escape the status, hierarchy and oppression of civilisation? Or is this an impossible fantasy born out of a misunderstanding of anthropology and the idealistic myth of the ‘noble savage'?Paleobiologist Mark Williams, Conservative former cabinet minister Peter Lilley and former leader of the Green Party Natalie Bennett weigh in on civilisation as we know it.
