This week, writer Emma Stefansky (Thrillist) takes us back into the DCOM library, this time with Kenny, to discuss SMART HOUSE.Emma helps us to better understand the phenomenon of Disney Channel Original Movies, and why they are held on such a high pedestal to the generation that grew up with them. We also discuss the miniscule budgets these movies were made on, the incompetent direction from LeVar Burton, and the literal fridging of the female characters. Poised for Exit

Our guest for this #PoisedforExit episode is Emma Gergen, Principal with Carlson Private Capital.  Emma's role is to find investments among privately held businesses whose owners are looking to scale back, recapitalize or grow beyond what the current team is capable of, and then become the owner's trusted liaison and adviser within the firm's professional team. Emma and her team understand privately held business very well; in fact she and her partners all came from family businesses. They've been there and understand better than traditional Private Equity firms. Carlson Private Capital seeks companies with EBITDA of around $5M, with investments ranging from $20M-$100M.  The entire team is focused and dedicated to carrying on the legacy that the founders and owners have built. They believe that legacy and its impact should not be undermined, which helps put owners at ease when it comes to making transition decisions. For most owners, selling a business is a very emotional decision and Carlson Private Capital understands that very well. They also know that informed owners make informed decisions, which brings us to the importance of working with advisers who can collaborate and whose expertise aligns with your goals. When it comes to Private Equity, there are many categories. Family Business Capital or Family Office Capital is one of the ways owners can sell or partially sell their companies. Carlson believes that an owner should call their own shots, since they know the business better than anyone. The role they play is as one who can step in and help advise on strategy, finance, and capital execution, to name a few. But they are not there to dictate or take the owner's place at all. For more on my interview with Emma Gergen, listen now. Find Emma here and find Julie here.Thank you to our sponsors! Quintessential Being
Radical role-modelling... the key to parenting with Emma Holdsworth

Quintessential Being

So much of our parenting triggers + challenges hark back to our own early, formative years. Our attachment to our own parent or caregiver impacts our relationships, how we form identity in adolescence, how we cope with stress + our resilience... so how do we feel more like we're nailing this parenting thing?Emma Holdsworth from Treehouse Family Counseling has spent her entire adult life supporting families to become the best parents they can be, connecting them to their core values as a parent, holding space for new Mothers as a postpartum doula + helping burgeoning families with her vast experience as a sandplay therapist + counsellor.Emma firmly believes doing our own inner work and exploring ourselves more deeply, examining our own past – is actually the key to parenting education. In this episode Emma talks to us about the formative years of childhood + that  behaviour (of any kind) is just how kids communicate their needs, as parents we can stuff it up by taking it super personally! She also advocates what she calls radical role modelling – be that which you want for your kid, yourself. It's easier said than done, we know... this is what I love about Emma's realistic approach to shifting our shit. It’s a process, don’t be afraid to show them the process or strategy behind trying to build sustainable + healthy change. THAT is radically modelling adulting.Continue the conversation here:https://www.instagram.com/quintessentialbeingbynikki/https://www.facebook.com/quintessentialbeingbynikkihttps://www.quintessentialbeing.com/Find Emma here:https://www.facebook.com/emholdsworthhttps://www.instagram.com/treehouse_emma/http://www.treehousecounselling.com.au/

Academic, activist, broadcaster and SOAS university teaching fellow Emma Dabiri joins me to discuss her latest book What White People Can Do Next: From Allyship to Coalition. Written in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder last year and the subsequent conversations on racism and anti-racism that followed it, What White People Can Do Next is a simultaneously radical and practical essay aimed at changing the way we talk about racial injustice, and featuring some incredibly nuanced and thoroughly original analyses of race, class, privilege and capitalism. A thoroughly illuminating read – and now a Sunday Times and Irish Times bestseller – it tackles the subject of race through a very different lens to the prevailing narrative, and in our discussion Emma shares why she felt so compelled to write this essay, the problems with the current anti-racist framework, the role that social media plays in learning about anti-racist theory and her thoughts on coalition building and the importance of finding common ground across racial lines. Emma tells us about her childhood and the particular moment when she started feeling expectations around her body. These pressures to look a certain way, “like a dancer”, stuck with her through university as she went on to study dance. Emma talks about having a negative relationship with food, the struggles of looking in a mirror all day, and becoming slightly obsessed with what her body looked like. She describes the intense stress and anxiety that came with wanting to change her body. Emma later found a passion for aerial dance and delved into the art form. However, at one point she found herself overtraining and feeling guilty when she wasn't training. We chat about body comments, social media, being present, and not feeling good enough. Emma has made amazing strides with her body image and now lives a much more balanced, sustainable life. She is working on listening to her body, eating and moving intuitively, and not judging foods as good or bad. Emma tells us how she hopes to help others with their mental health struggles - aiming to have less judgement, less pressure, and more balance. Find Emma on Instagram @tangledinair. Emma Chapple is a legal babe and a writer. She's especially known for writing about her experiences living with Crohn’s disease-- or, as she’d joke, “being the girl without a butthole!” Along with chronic physical illness, Emma struggles with depression, anxiety and body image issues. The comorbidity of chronic physical illness and chronic mental illness and mental health issues is something that's rarely discussed when talking about conditions such as Crohn's. Emma is part of changing this in a big way. Emma has laid out all of her experiences with Crohn's and her ileostomy, not just in today's episode, but in her essays on Medium. Which, in Emma's true spirit, included tons of pop culture references! Shaunna and Emma's conversation also spans topics such as academic anxiety, self-stigmatization, Girls' Shoshanna and Broad City's Abbi and Ilana as examples of portrayals of young women in their 20s trying to get it together, having to watch "dudebro" films in film class, Carrie Fisher's brutal honesty and vulnerability and the joys of being an Adult Disney Fan.
