Tom House was a professional baseball player, turned baseball coach and now has transitioned himself into the guru of teaching NFL Quarterbacks the 4 principles of achieving at a high level. Facinating interview of how he has gotten the best of Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott and many others to excell well into their 40's.  Here is the full episode transcribed. Hey, everybody's Mark Pattison. I'm back again with another great episode of Finding Your Summit, all about people overcoming excuse me, all about people overcoming adversity and making their way through it and finding their summit. So, anyways, I haven't done this a little bit during the summer here, but we're back on we're back on track and before we get into today's wonderful guests, we're gonna talk about my website really quickly. WWW dot mark pattison, NFL DOT COM. There's a number of things going on there. Number One, the movie searching for the summit, which one and Emmy for best picture, covering my Everest journey by the NFL Um, is now on that website. You can check it out by following the different lengths that are there. That's number one. Number two, I've got over two D sixty podcasts of finding your summit with amazing people at the guy out today doing incredible things which will inspire all. And number three, I continue to have my hands knee deep in my flat. Philanthropy causes with with higher ground. That's the organization that helps um process all these things and and drive money, Um and awareness to people who really need. A lot of these people are military folks who have had PTSD and have had adaptive issues with their legs and norms and things like that. So really about empowerment. My daughter also has epilepsy. So we created this found this campaign called the millions Everest, and we have now raised well over a hundre ground towards these great causes. So, Um, if you want to donate over there, go ahead. Of all the money goes directly to higher ground. Okay, on that note, let's jump into today's great guests. His name is Tom. How's Tom? How are you doing? Very good, happy Wednesday. Happy Wednesday to you. I haven't done this in the spell in about a month and so my got a tongue twisted just a little bit and I normally don't do that, but it's all good. Um. So I I I found you, like a lot of times I do. You know, at some certain point the Dealta of knowing people and then tapping into other people. You hear about somebody and I was so fascinated because they've called you this guru, you know, quote unquote. I don't know how you exactly Um phrase that up, but I kind of want to give away what we're gonna talk about a little bit later and then to kind of go back and see how the building blocks of how you actually got to the place that you were in today. Um Tom, is a guy that I saw, I think, on twitter, and you've been, uh, somewhat infamous, that's the right word, for helping guys like Tom Brady, Dak Prescott many other NFL stars drew brees over the years with their throwing motion and helping them get better. And the interesting thing about all this is that you're really a baseball guy and you're a guy that that went to USC went on, you were drafted by the braves, played over the Red Sox and home my home, uh team, I guess, so to speak, the mariners. I grew up in Seattle, Washington, want to the University of Washington. So you you, I'm sure you know that area well up there. But but let's go back to kind of the route at the beginning of formulating because so much of what you do is just not about how to throw a ball. To me, all mechanics are roughly the same when throwing anything, whether it's, you know, a baseball, a football, a basketball. It's all that fall through shoulders, score a target and off you go. But there's so much more that you do that you contribute to this which is between the years um of making that happen. So let's let's start kind of back at USC and your love for baseball and how did that kind of evolve to where you are today. Mark, that's a great leading and you've done your homework. It's it's awesome to talk to some of it. It has any kind of clue that what I've been doing for the last fifty years. But we'll go back to sc it actually started sitting into that with my mom and dad. There Um not quantifying or qualifying sports as a way to make a living. They only cared about getting an education. So everything I did in sports I had to get an a to be able to play. So that's set the stage. But when I got to USC UM, my first bullpen was next to a guy named Tom Sieber. I had a really good high school career and my my first bullpen at USC with coach Rod Dato, who was the coach of the century, watching over my shoulder and severer shoulder. I was looking at this guy. He was a man child at eighteen, nineteen years old and I'm flipping up my little left hand at eighty mile an hour fastball and he's running it up there, you know, in a bullpen. And coach Dato was the first one to make me aware that there were options outside of a pure talent. He said, well, what do you think? A young Tom seewer Tommy House, and I said, rod if you need me to do what he's doing, you got to row left hander. And this is where I've been fortunate my whole life when it comes to someone mentoring me at the right time at a prosp room. He said, I don't need you to be Tom Seeber, I need to be the best Tommy House you can be. Throw your curveball, throw your change up field your position, hold downers close, you'll get innings, you'll win a lot of games with the TROJANS and you'll play some pro bowl too. You know again. But let me let me jump in really quickly, because you're telling me this whole story and the thing that that I'm recollecting again going back to Seattle, watching the Seattle Mariners, especially when they had griffey and Rodriguez and those guys up there. He had a picture named Jamie Moyer, and you sound just like him right, you left. He had could throw probably top s eighty five miles per hour. And you're you're aware that I had jamie for six years when I was a pitching coach with the Texas Rangers. Well, there you go. And and he ended up having a longer career. He Pitched Hill. It was forty eight. Nolan Ryan only pitched untilie was seven. But it was the same information and Instruction delivered to a particularly different human being. But the process created a better chance for an outcome, a positive outcome, with both of them. Okay, so let's talk about let's talk about that process, because it's you, you, I think you you used yourself in Tom Sieber, who I think played for the dodgers way back when, Um, and and then you're talking about Nolan Ryan and Jamie Moyer. Right, Nolan Ryan was just like a Pissy, you know, burning fire out of his nose, throwing Hunter Mile Prior fastballs well into, like you said, his late forties. And then you have Jamie Meyer, probably very similar to you, a lefty that would just right pots coming in and strike people out left and right right. Well, you talk about individuals, whether they're coaches or athletes reaching a semit or getting really good, with mastery at what they do. It's it's really finding order in chaos with with some kind of a process. We cannot what I learned early on, we cannot control outcome, but we can control process and by Hook or by Crook, throughout my playing career and my coaching career I got lucky in learning how to manage the process that I was going through and not getting so caught up in outcomes. Okay, so so, so. So. Go back there, though. I'm so fascinating this because if you can, if you can appreciate, you know, going through major college football with the process, going into the NFL, with the process, I was kind of like Tom Brady, another guy that you mentioned. I was drafted in the seventh round. He was drafted in the sixth round. Had to fight for everything. Obviously Tom Brady's a legend legendary player. I wasn't, but you know, still we all try to achieve our ceiling of what we were able to do and then going on and and climbing all these crazy mountains around the world. That took a process and didn't know what the Hell I was doing when I got into it and then, you know, coming back and helping to revive sports illustrated there was a certain process and so I'm trying to understand from you, like I really want to peel back the layer here and not just glaze over like Oh, there's a process. Well, what does that mean like to you in your mind? What is that process? What's that combined of well, it's it's unique to each individual Um, like there's one set of rules, but there's a million interpretations and it's a function of his movement efficiencies, his functional strength, his mal emotional capacity and his nutrition in sleep to recover. Those are the four basic pillars of health and performance in any sports occupation. And again, I played, but I continue to get education. I went on and got a couple of Bestelor's science, a cup of Masters and a Ph d, an avid learner for and just listen to you talk. You may have you may not have realized it was formal Um, but you're an avid learner or you would not have been able to do the climbing you did on the seven summits of the highest mountain ranges in the world. And it's the individual Um and he doesn't have to be a leader. He can. He can actually follow someone that identifies for himself or herself the path of least resistance, the process that will return the most give it, give the best return for the least akhams raiser, let the the best return for the least amount of thinking or processing. So what I got lucky at is, as a player I was always in front of somebody that gave me a how to with my talent and how a process to make it. They were Clyde King's of the world where he realized I didn't throw hard, but he saw that my e r a when I was in the minor leagues, one time through the lineup my Ra was less than two. By the third time through the lineup it was astronomical. So he was a a statistics guy before anThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5724695/advertisement

Last month Mark successfully climbed and summited Mt. Everest, the highest mountain on earth. By doing so, he became the first NFL player in history to make it to the top of The Seven Summits, the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. In addition to being a former NFL football player and successful high altitude mountain climber, Mark is also an accomplished entrepreneur, philanthropist, podcaster, and executive at Sports Illustrated. He's a man who's lived an incredible life and a man with multiple missions. One of Mark's important missions is helping his daughter, Emilia, with successfully overcoming her own Everest by defeating epilepsy (uncontrolled and sometimes fatal seizures). Currently, more than 3.4 million people in the U.S. have epilepsy (1 in 26 people), with 3,000 people dying each year from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).  In our live video interview, Mark will be sharing his Mt. Everest adventure. I'll also be asking Mark to share the mindset he developed early in life to become a successful athlete, entrepreneur, and human being. Live Q&A is always encouraged! While I am in Nepal preparing for my epic Mt Everest & Lhotse climb, here's a "Rewind" replay of one of my most popular episodes with Sean Evangelista.  Sean is a former member of the U.S. Navy Seals, an entrepreneur and the owner of “Thirty Seconds Out”, a unique apparel company offering commando-inspired t-shirt and cap designs as well as other military-related items. Sean had a difficult and troubled childhood, but he managed to turn his life around after high school and went on to find success both during and after his military career. During Sean’s military service, he experienced numerous dangerous active combat situations that resulted in more than thirty broken bones and even brain injuries. However, through a combination of perseverance and good fortune, Sean was able to survive these difficult situations and retire from a distinguished career. Now, Sean is devoted to operating Thirty Seconds Out and experiencing every new adventure life has to offer. On this very inspirational podcast episode of Finding Your Summit, Sean shares how growing up with an abusive stepfather and being molested by a neighborhood boy set his life on a path of lashing out and self-destructive behavior, and he discusses how his time in the military helped him right his course again. Sean’s powerful story is one of survival and overcoming challenges, and I hope you’ll take as much encouragement from this motivational podcast episode as I have.

Kechi Okwuchi is a Nigerian-born self-taught singer and plane crash survivor. Since becoming a finalist on America’s Got Talent in 2017, she has become a traveling artist, inspirational speaker and burn survivor advocate. Throughout the difficult journey of her burns recovery, Kechi was sustained by her faith, her family and her music. On June 10th, 2018, she released her first single, "Don't You Dare," on all music platforms, and in 2019, she became a finalist on America's Got Talent: The Champions through Simon Cowell's "golden buzzer." Kechi has now chosen to forge ahead on a path that allows her to explore both business and artistic opportunities.   On this gripping podcast episode of Finding Your Summit, Kechi Okwuchi shares her experience as one of two survivors from a major plane crash in 2005, and she discusses the role that music played in her long journey to recovery. Kechi's compelling story is one of hope & perseverance; I have no doubt you’ll take as much inspiration from this episode as I have.   Kechi shares her experience as one of two survivors from the Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crash in December 2005 that claimed 107 lives, 60 of which were her school mates. She sustained 3rd-degree burns over 65% of her body.   Kechi talks about how her life was saved in a South African hospital and how Shriner's Hospital in Galveston, TX gave her back her life and independence via reconstructive surgery.   Kechi discusses how music kept her connected even while she was in a coma and how it actually became part of her prescribed therapy. Kechi recalls how her singing voice mysteriously improved after the crash as she found her true voice on a home karaoke machine and in a church choir.   Kechi shares her journey of being submitted as a contestant to America's Got Talent by a friend and what it felt like to be a finalist on America's Got Talent (2017) and America's Got Talent: The Champions (2019).   Kechi recalls the emotions she faced as her life took a stunning new trajectory into a professional singing career and how America’s Got Talent became a platform for her to be an Ambassador of Hope for other victims of trauma.   You don’t want to miss the end of the podcast where Kechi hints at the release of some upcoming projects and may even treat us to a solo Acapella! The Wreckage:   With each of my podcast episodes I intend to bring you stories of overcoming adversity and discovering victory. The story of Kechi Okwuchi exemplifies this beyond any other that I can think of. The trauma of experiencing and surviving a major plane crash as a teenager and then going down a multi-year road of recovery could have been debilitating. All of her classmates were killed and she experienced 3rd-degree burns on over 65% of her body. Many people never make it back from an experience like this and they become defined by their tragedy.   But something different happened with Kechi. She held onto her love for music and remained grateful for the doctors and hospitals that saved and restored her life. Kechi’s music became her therapy and ultimately her pathway to a summit greater than she could’ve ever imagined. The Rise:   Kechi wasn’t discontent with starting small - singing on her home karaoke machine and in her church choir. She set goals to continue her academic training and accomplished those goals one after another. Her goals weren’t to be famous; they were to keep moving forward and as a result she is now a touring singer and inspirational speaker. Kechi’s scars don't define her.   As I watched the video of Kechi singing on stage I saw what the judges and America saw: a woman who’s inner beauty blossomed as she expressed herself through song. I truly believe she is more than a "one-hit wonder". She reminds me of Kelly Clarkson, a singer that has the type of talent, range, and versatility that can endure. Kechi Okwuchi is a walking reminder for us that there's life after trauma. She has utilized her visibility on America’s Got Talent as a platform to be an Ambassador of Hope to other burn victims. She knows that is she can inspire just one person each day then she’s made a difference, and boy is she doing that! Multi-Sport Athletic Star Anthony Allen and Mark Pattison were teammates at the University of Washington. Before that they were cross-town rivals. Anthony attended Garfield High School in Seattle.  Twice his football team came in 3rd in state in Washington. Always a fantastic athlete, Anthony excelled at basketball, football, track. His on the field performance made him a highly sought after recruit. Stays Home with UW Anthony ultimately picked University of Washington, staying home in Seattle rather than playing for other powerhouse football universities. Though not his primary position, UW wanted wanted him to play defensive back. Ultimately, Anthony made the right choice. Injuries to teammates forced Allen into service at Quarterback instead of corner. This exposure allowed Allen to develop into a better overall offensive player. After serving the teams’ needs at QB, he was given his choice and allowed to move to wideout. USFL Draft Anthony stood out on an athletic UW team as a draft worthy wide receiver. Allen was taken in the 3rd round by the Tampa Bay Bandits of the 1983 USFL draft. Anthony was also selected in the 6th round in the NFL in the same year–back in 1983 the USFL drafted before the NFL. The Los Angeles Express traded for Allen’s rights. Anthony signed and played the last eight games of season for the Express catching 37 balls and 3 touchdowns. NFL Career Anthony always had a nose for the end zone. While playing with the St. Louis Cardinals, he had 8 catches for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns in a single game; a record that remains for the Cardinals franchise. Anthony also played for the Washington Redskins. During his time in DC he scored a touchdown on an 88-yard pass. Finally, in 1987, Anthony and the Redskins won Super Bowl XXII. Anthony and Mark caught up on memories, kids and caring for family in this sweet episode, because sometimes, you got to slow down to catch up. Mariel Hemingway Mariel as a child, experienced tumult constantly, yet grew up surrounded by beauty in Ketchum, Idaho. Being part of the Hemingway family meant exposure to drug and alcohol abuse, mental disorders; plus, seven separate suicides within the family. Everyone was damaged and self-medicating to cope. Mariel made a documentary Running From Crazy that chronicles that tumultuous upbringing. To escape, the mountains became Mariel’s refuge. She used the outdoors to get stable, to discover herself and find understanding. Even at an early age, Mariel explored the healing power of her mountain home. She rejected drugs and alcohol as a means of escape and leaned on nature and health focused choices. Hemingway Family Growing up in the Hemingway family meant dealing with generational emotional damage. Her grandfather Ernest, despite his success and notoriety, never felt or learned to love from his mother. The cycle continued with Mariel’s father Jack. Failing at Love Jack a hero in his own right, an OSS spy working with the French resistance during WWII; was never truly loved by his father. Amplifying the damage, Jack married a woman who also, lacked the capacity to love. His wife’s first husband was a fighter pilot who was killed in action; a loss that Mariel’s mother never overcame. Learning To Play Mariel wrote a book called The Invisible Girl revealing the life she led in a house that struggled to see her or one another. Mariel’s family was to occupied with other things that prevented any real engagement. Today Mariel, is an evolved comfortable, and present person, nothing that she likes who she is…she’s learned to be happy with her life, and she continues to work on staying in that place. That place in part, is sweetened by Mariel’s partner Bobby. Bobby taught Mariel how to play and about spontaneity. When Mariel asks, “Why?” as Bobby stops to enjoy a moment of inspiration, he’d say, “Why Not?” Showing her that embracing a whimsical moment sweetens life and warms the soul. The young girl who dealt with so much tumult and chaos used control to limit her exposure. The woman, Mariel, who’s comfortable and present has learned to let go. Being born with no arms and legs never stopped Kyle Maynard from becoming a competitive football player, a champion wrestler and a summiteer of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Join Kyle’s journey as he almost gave up half way, but thanks to his family, coaches and mentors, kept living his life with no excuses. Never stop thinking forward on what can be possible and what you can achieve through hard work and positivity. It’s Mark Pattison back again with another phenomenal episode of Finding Your Summit, and I don’t throw that word around a lot but this individual is special. His name is Kyle Maynard. I was on Aconcagua down in Argentina climbing this crazy mountain, about 21,000 feet, and all of the sudden I see this guy crawling up the mountain and I didn’t know what was going at me. I'm sitting on a rock, taking a breather like, “Can I keep going?” He literally crawls next to me. This guy, Kyle, was born with no arms or legs, congenital amputee it’s called. Essentially at the elbow and at the kneecap, that’s where it ends. He is taking on these amazing challenges. He has been Oprah. He’s got two ESPYs for Athlete of the Year. He climbed Kilimanjaro. Talk about absolute inspiration. We walked through this journey and he has got this whole mantra on life about no excuses; no excuses to go do things. If we all took that to heart, we’d just be better people. We wouldn’t sit around complaining. Look at the guy next to you, just an inspiration. I told him this as I was looking up his resume and I was doing some research on him, I was like, “I haven’t done anything compared to what this guy has done.” He is just constantly forward thinking about possibilities and that’s the thing that inspires me and why this episode was so much fun to do. Phenomenal it is, phenomenal describes him. As always, please go in and rate and review on iTunes, Finding Your Summit. Just continued to pile up the downloads. People are so driven to hear about adversity because we all have it. There's nothing special I'm doing, it’s just the people are coming on and sharing their stories and we can all identify with these different things.
