Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters revolves around the evolving relationships between Reese, Ames, and Katrina. Reese and Ames were in a loving relationship until Ames detransitioned. When Katrina tells Ames she's pregnant with his baby, all three of them are forced to re-examine their ideas of family and womanhood. We discuss the pleasures of reading the book, and how it blends the personal and the political seamlessly. We close off the conversation by sharing how we decide what to read next.
One of the most celebrated novels of 2021, Torrey Peters' Detransition, Baby examines the lives of three women – transgender and cisgender – when they collide after an unexpected pregnancy forces them to confront their deepest desires. Described by Carmen Maria Machado as “so good I want to scream”, Detransition, Baby brilliantly and fearlessly navigates the taboos around gender, sex and relationships, gifting readers a thrillingly original, witty and deeply moving novel. Appearing live via video, Torrey speaks about her unforgettable debut with Liz Duck-Chong. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and subscribe to our channel. Detransition, Baby has become an incredibly popular book club book. How can it not be, really? It has all the great hallmarks: a dry sense of humor, creative writing style, and most importantly, messy people living messy lives. Torrey Peters's first novel explores the sloppy quasi-triangle of Reese, a trans woman who can't quite get it together; her ex-partner Ames (previously Amy, previously previously James), who detransitioned a few years ago; and Katrina, the woman that Ames has inadvertently knocked up. Right. When Ames realizes that he can parent, but he can't father, he turns to Reese for help: she's always wanted a kid and is good with kids, so why not be the third parent in this family? What unfolds from there traces Reese's relationship with Amy through the past and how Reese is drawn into a world with Katrina's wants and Ames's needs. Travelling through the trans femme world of Brooklyn and bringing to light stories about the trans community that have nothing to do with HIV, Detransition, Baby has become an immediate standard of queer literature. In this episode, we're talking through Detransition, Baby, including the conversation the novel holds around motherhood, womanhood and fatherhood, as well as ideas of gender versus sex, and most importantly: what would these three want if they were on an episode of House Hunters? (It's happened before!)
Destransition, Baby is this week's book and it was recommended by one thousand (three) fans. Meet Reese, Ames and Katrina, a trans woman, a trans woman who has detransitioned, and a cis woman, respectively. Katrina finds herself pregnant by Ames even though Ames thought he was sterile due to hormone treatment. Reese is desperate to be a mother. Can they all be parents to the same baby? Fresh, sharp and witty, this is an absolute stunner of a novel. After that, we talk 1998 DreamWorks film, Antz, yellow crazy ants, and Sarah's ant infestation. It's a very ants-heavy episode tbqhwy. Katrina wiederum will alles, nur kein Kind.
Author Torrey Peters sits down with Cameron to discuss her new novel DETRANSITION BABY, raising kids as part of a blended family, and including the detransitioning experience in her novel.

Picture this: Du wirst von deinem Freund schwanger. Torrey Peters joins Tristan Taormino to talk about her national bestselling novel Detransition, Baby (One World/Random House). They talk about her unapologetic approach to writing the book (“I wrote this book for trans women”), the sex scenes that Tristan loved, being seen, multiple kinds of transitions, gender anxiety, community, bad decisions, womanhood, and motherhood. And they roll around with the question: how did such a trans and queer book become a mainstream runaway bestseller? Torrey Peters is the author of Detransition, Baby as well as the novellas Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones and The Masker. She also holds an MFA from the University of Iowa and a Masters in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth. Torrey rides a pink motorcycle and splits her time between Brooklyn and an off-grid cabin in Vermont. Special thanks to Lorals and Pour Moi for their support of this episode.

Today we talk about a 2021 debut book - Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters! We both loved this book, for a multitude of reasons. It is messy, incredibly queer, it teaches you and asks hard questions and causes you to sit and think about ideas and concepts. It speaks on womanhood, what it means to be a mother/parent, creating nontraditional families, and queer culture. There is a true beauty in reading books that don't try to apologize or hide what they are and who they are for - and Detransition, Baby does not hide its messy, its realness, its queerness. We love it and can't wait to see/hear what our listeners thought as well! Next up? Check out our April book and read it before the episode airs - The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson. About Torrey Peters: Torrey Peters is the author of the novellas Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones and The Masker, which are available for free on her website. She holds an MFA from the University of Iowa and an MA in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth. She grew up in Chicago and now lives in Brooklyn. About Detransition, Baby: Reese almost had it all: a loving relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York City, a job she didn't hate. She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Now Reese is caught in a self-destructive pattern: avoiding her loneliness by sleeping with married men. Ames isn't happy either. He thought detransitioning to live as a man would make life easier, but that decision cost him his relationship with Reese—and losing her meant losing his only family. Even though their romance is over, he longs to find a way back to her. When Ames's boss and lover, Katrina, reveals that she's pregnant with his baby—and that she's not sure whether she wants to keep it—Ames wonders if this is the chance he's been waiting for. Could the three of them form some kind of unconventional family—and raise the baby together? This provocative debut is about what happens at the emotional, messy, vulnerable corners of womanhood that platitudes and good intentions can't reach. Torrey Peters brilliantly and fearlessly navigates the most dangerous taboos around gender, sex, and relationships, gifting us a thrillingly original, witty, and deeply moving novel.
