In the last twenty-five years, ghost hunting has entered something of a golden age, with all sorts of technology playing its part and filling up an investigators kit bag. Cameras, EMF metres, InfraRed thermometers and spirit boxes all help to carve a science out of a difficult premise, with differing levels of credibility. In the early 1800s, things were a little bit different. It was a simpler time. All you needed back then was a stiff drink, or maybe two, and a loaded revolver, because as we all know, if you want to catch a ghost, you need to shoot it first. Amidst the growing hysteria, tragedy struck on February 3, 1804, when a local bricklayer named Thomas Millwood was mistaken for the Hammersmith Ghost and fatally shot by a nervous vigilante. This tragic incident heightened the tensions, raising questions about the identity of the apparition and the appropriateness of vigilante justice. As the authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding Thomas Millwood's death, startling revelations emerged. The true identity of the Hammersmith Ghost was unveiled as a deceased shoemaker named John Graham, who had been buried in the local churchyard. But how had he come to be seen wandering the streets, and why did his specter appear so menacing? As the Hammersmith Ghost's true identity came to light, debate raged over whether the sightings were part of a sinister hoax or something truly supernatural. Skeptics argued that it was merely a cruel prank played by mischievous individuals seeking to terrorize the community. Meanwhile, believers clung to the idea of a vengeful spirit haunting the living. The killing of Thomas Millwood led to the arrest of the shooter, Francis Smith. The landmark trial that followed captured the public's attention and raised complex legal questions about the nature of apparitions and the consequences of acting on fear. The court's decision would set a precedent for future cases involving self-defense and mistaken identity. As the Hammersmith Ghost hysteria eventually subsided, its legacy endured. The case offered valuable insights into human psychology, mob mentality, and the power of fear over reason. Furthermore, it prompted important discussions about the reliability of eyewitness accounts and the responsibility of the legal system in handling cases involving the supernatural. On January 3rd 1804, 29 year old excise officer named Francis Smith, a member of one of the armed patrols set up in the wake of the reports shot and killed what he thought to be the aggravating apparition, but did he really shoot and kill a ghost, or was it just a poor bricklayer leaving his sister's abode? And if Smith didn't gun down the ghost, who, or what, was the Hammersmith Ghost?

On the night of tuesday, January 3rd of 1804, 29 year old excise officer Francis Smith came face to face with the ghost and in an act of justice, shot down the white figure in the dead of night, determined to free Hammersmith from the ghost's reign of terror once and for all. What Smith didn't realize was that he didn't kill the ghost at all, but instead killed 32 year old bricklayer Thomas Millwood. This resulted in a murder trial that would set a legal precedent in the UK involving self-defense that remained unsettled for almost two hundred years.

In this instalment of the podcast, our guest is a young scientist, Adam Francis Smith, who lives in the Bavarian Forest National Park. Adam specializes in large terrestrial mammal monitoring and predator-prey interactions. He also works for the Frankfurt Zoological Society where he focuses on specific project areas in Ukraine and Belarus and where, with a team of ecologists, he tries to protect large wilderness areas. During our conversation, Adam took us on a fascinating journey to, among other places, the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve where he and his team set camera traps to monitor predator and prey species. Calcium, the main constituent of bone, turns out to play a major role in regulating the cells that orchestrate bone growth, a finding that could affect treatment for conditions caused by too much collagen deposition, such as fibrosis and excessive scarring, as well as diseases of too little bone growth, such as Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS). The finding by Michael Rape and his colleagues at UC Berkeley came from study of the signals that tell undifferentiated stem cells in the very early embryo to mature into bone cells. As a result, people like Francis Smith, a University of Colorado researcher who visited Rape in his lab, require dozens of surgeries during childhood to reconstruct the face, implant hearing aids and even reconstruct the trachea to breathe normally. Rape hopes that basic research to pinpoint the key signals that trigger proper bone growth can help those like Smith avoid such painful surgeries.
