Andy and Brendan convened with a live gathering at the official B. Draddy House in Augusta National for this extra Wednesday night episode ahead of first shots at the Masters. They are joined at the start by both Taylor Moore, who will start his second Masters this week, and Billy Draddy, a founder and creative director at B.Draddy and Summit Golf Brands. They discuss the course conditions with Taylor and some amusing stories of trying to find your way around Augusta National as a first timer and how that compares to coming back this year. In the second half of the podcast, Andy and Brendan react to Fred Ridley's press conference and what some of his statements might mean for the larger professional golf world before taking a couple questions from the crowd at sign off.
The waiting is almost over... it's time for the 2024 Masters to begin! Well, whenever the rain allows it to, that is! Michael and Alex have a rather grim weather update to start today's Masters Commute. The bad news? It's going to be wet on Thursday. The good news? The rest of the week looks a whole lot better. Elsewhere, there's chat about Greg Norman's surprise appearance at the Masters today, Fred Ridley's extremely interesting presser, and a withering take-down of the Par-3 Contest by Mr Perry. All that, plus a namecheck for Bob Holness. Yes, really. On today's show, Ryan talks about the weird split screen of Greg Norman coming to the Masters as a ticketed patron while chairman Fred Ridley uses his post to discuss wide-ranging issues in the game.
Andy and Brendan send you off to the weekend with a fun 50 minutes on … a wide range of subjects. They begin with some reaction to Zach Johnon jamming right in their faces with an opening round 10-under 62. Then they somehow get on the subject of the proper way to cut grilled cheese, parents who email the school too much, and Coco Gauff's pasta endorsement. There's more discussion on some Palm Springs matters, like Jon Rahm allegedly being in town and playing in some games, Nick Dunlap's impressive showing, and Billy Boy mic'd up on PGA Tour Live. They also discuss Bernhard Langer announcing this year will be his last Masters and Fred Ridley saying Angel Cabrera will be welcomed back if he gets his visa. Some Pelley quotes about a “global tour” are also dissected and analyzed as fairly pushy on his strategic alliance. They close with a Golf Advice segment on a boss making an employee take his son out to his fancy club and a Bob Parsons speech at the Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Vietnam.
We kick off 2024 and Season #11 of the Next on the Tee podcast with my guests Tom Patri, Kermit Zarley, Dr. Bob Winters, and Jane Crafter. TP and I get into the deadline that wasn't with the PIF and the PGA Tour. The New Year's deadline came and went and instead of professional golf going into a new year with all this behind them, we got nothing. I also get his thoughts on the power play that some players may be trying to pull off like telling Fred Ridley that The Masters needs to up their prize money. TP also gives us a lesson on what to do if we've contracted the dreaded Y word with our putting. Kermit Zarley played his college golf at the University of Houston. He was the medalist at the 1962 National Championship and helped the Cougars win the team title as well. We hear about what it was like being a part of Houston's domination of men's college golf from the mid-50s to the mid-70s. Kermit then takes us through his 4 wins on tour and what it was like battling Jack Nicklaus at the 1972 US Open at Pebble Beach. We just scratched the surface of his great career. Dr. Bob Winters is back. He is one of the Top Sports Psychologists. He takes us through his 5 Truth Bombs to Help Create Golf Confidence. We also learn about his recent trip to Scotland where he played at Prestwick, the site of the very first Open Championship. His trip also included a stop at Dundonald Links site of the Women's Open Championship. Doc is fantastic and it was great to have him back on the show so quickly. I round out the show with a visit from Jane Crafter. Jane is from Perth, Australia. She is a two-time Australian Ladies Masters Champion plus winner of the 1997 Australian Open. We hear about those tremendous victories plus what it was like battling Nancy Lopez at the 1990 Phar-Mor at Inverrary and being a driving force behind starting the Legends of the LPGA Tour. Jane is a delight and made the segment so much fun.
Smylie is joined by four-time NBA champ and two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry as he prepares to play in the eighth edition of "The Match" in Las Vegas. Steph discusses his recent trip to Cypress Point, whether NIL would have impacted his college decision, the biggest basketball shot of his career, his role as Justin Thomas' shooting coach, and the wild question Jordan Spieth asked President Obama during a round of golf.

Club + Resort Business Editor Rob Thomas chats with Agustin Pizá, Founder of Pizá Golf—internationally recognized as a world-class architecture and golf course design firm. Among the topics discussed are sustainability, his partnership with Golf Channel Analyst Brandel Chamblee and the future of golf course architecture. The first Pizá Chamblee signature design (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/gol...) pushes the creative boundaries of multi-purpose golf. The duo is collaborating on a 24-hole golf resort with four distinct six-hole golf loops. The project is referred to as the “Butterfly Effect.” It is in Cuatro Cíenegas, Desertica described as an oasis in the desert with abundant springs that create marshes. In addition to the energetic conversation with Piza, Thomas also discussed the latest news from across the industry with Senior Editor Phil Keren. The West Palm Beach Municipal Golf Course (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/wes...) will be operated on a nonprofit basis by the PGA of America. The enhanced property will include an 18-hole course, a 9-hole course, a driving range and putting practice greens, as well as a clubhouse. Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/aug...) and the Masters Tournament, announced April 5 that the club will partner with Augusta Technical College, the First Tee of Augusta and Augusta Municipal Golf Course to introduce “a new era for public golf in [the] city.” As part of this new announcement, Augusta Tech will relocate its golf course management program to The Patch, creating a living classroom environment. Also, the Broken Sound Club unveiled its contemporary reimagination (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/bro...) of the Boca Raton, Fla. property's clubhouse, which added dining options and increased amenities, all designed to reflect and enhance the distinctive member experience of “enjoying a life well-lived.” The club also advanced the objective of sustainability and improved the overall playing conditions and replaced infrastructure on its renowned Old Course (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/bro.... At the forefront of sustainability initiatives, the course is the first golf facility in Florida (second in the United States and 14th in the world) to be GEO Certified.
This midweek Masters episode starts with Garrett offering some solo thoughts on the pre-tournament press conferences at Augusta National (0:34). He touches on ANGC chairman Fred Ridley's announcement of a partnership with a local muni as well as Ridley's diplomatic but telling comments on the USGA and R&A's efforts to roll back the golf ball in elite competitions. Also assessed are Dustin Johnson's and Jon Rahm's reactions to the newly lengthened 13th hole. Garrett then brings on golf historian Bob Crosby (@otey71) to explore an alternative take on the history of Augusta National's course design (14:49). Bob takes Garrett through the origins and evolution of the third, eighth, seventh, and 10th holes at the Masters venue and offers a compelling interpretation of why they changed—or, in the case of the third hole, didn't change—and what it all meant.

Golf – The Masters – LIV and let live: Masters still about who wins green jacket Masters chairman Fred Ridley is hopeful of a Masters just like any other. Ridley says the interaction with LIV players at the champions dinner made it feel like everything was normal in the golf world. But it’s been all the chatter for the last 10 months. The Masters gets underway on Thursday. Tiger Woods is playing. Phil Mickelson is back in the field. Bad weather is in the forecast. Ridley believes the Masters is above it all. He says every player in the field wants the same thing. And that’s to be wearing a green jacket on Sunday afternoon. NCAAWBKB – LSU’s Reese on White House flap: ‘We'll go to the Obamas’ First lady Jill Biden's walk-back of her suggestion that runner-up Iowa should join NCAA women's basketball champion LSU for a visit to the White House doesn’t sit well with Angel Reese. The Tigers star said on The Paper Route Podcast the Tigers should celebrate their title with Barack and Michelle Obama rather than with President Joe Biden and his wife. Jill Biden attended Sunday’s 102-85 LSU victory. She said Monday that as part of the longstanding tradition of having champions visit the White House, the Hawkeyes should come as well because they played such a good game. But he says the focus of the Masters is to bring the top players together from around the world. The 16 players from LIV Golf include six former champions and six who qualify by being in the top 50 in the world ranking. Ridley said the club still reserves the right to alter its criteria for 2024. This episode we hear from Fred Ridley, a well-recognized partner at the law firm Foley & Lardner LLP. He is also the current chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and its annual tournaments, which includes The Masters in April. Fred is also well known for being the last US Amateur champion not to turn pro - having won in 1975. He grew up in Lakeland, Florida, learning to play golf on municipal courses. He went on to play collegiate golf at the University of Florida on a team that eventually won a national title, played once and served twice as Team captain in the Walker Cup, and played once and served as team captain once in the World Amateur Team Championship. He has also served in various executive roles for the USGA including President in the mid-2000s. So - incredible record - why not turn pro? Fred made a firm decision at a young age to work toward a career in law, and points to his role model and Augusta National founder, Bobby Jones, as his inspiration. After graduating from Stetson Law, Fred went to work for IMG, Mark McCormack's sports agency in Cleveland. Eventually, he came back to Tampa - in that transition he stopped playing competitive golf, dug into work, and found his way to Foley & Lardner where he has been since 2001. Fred and I discuss his foundations in golf, his transition from being known as a golfer to becoming known as a working professional, the commonalities in his executive roles on and off the golf course, and his definition of “grow the game.”
