After years of anticipation, a new day has dawned in DC Animation with the series debut of Batman Caped Crusader on Prime Video. Cal & Liam take a break from their typical nostalgia fare to bring their thoughts on the first four episodes of the series and kick things off with Episode 1 titled "In Treacherous Waters." The Good Brothers break down a plot that has the herculean task of establishing a new universe while differentiating itself from its Bruce Timm helmed predecessor. The hosts of course discuss the look of the cartoon, how modern cartoon animated projects compare to the older DC Comics projects, a live orchestral soundtrack from composer Frederik Wiedmann and a rather large voice cast. All of this and plenty of comparisons and contrasts to Batman The Animated Series and why our hosts don't think making The Penguin a woman is a big deal on this week's all new DCAU Review! FREDERIK WIEDMANNEmmy-award winning Frederik Wiedmann is one of the most diverse and cultivated composers working in motion pictures today. With over 150 titles to his name in all realms and genres, Wiedmann has established himself as insightful artist with an enduring passion for storytelling. Recently, Wiedmann composed music for Star Trek: Picard (Season 3) for Paramount+, Women is Losers starring Simu Liu, which premiered at SXWX in early 2021. Wiedmann is the composer behind the acclaimed Netflix animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince, which is from the writers of the popular series Avatar: The Last Airbender, for which he earned an Emmy nomination in the original score category. In 2016, he won a Daytime Emmy Award in the category of “Outstanding Original Song” alongside lyricist Mitch Watson, for the song “True Bromance” from Dreamworks Animation's Madagascar spinoff All Hail King Julien. Wiedmann has been a main stay in the DC cinematic universe, starting with his work onGreen Lantern: The Animated Series, for which he earned two consecutive Annie Awards nominations. His success on the series led to further popular Warner Bros' DC projects such as,Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Son of Batman, Death of Superman, Justice League: Gods and Monsters, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight among others. He currently lives in LA with his wife and two wonderful children. STEPHEN BARTONStephen Barton's extensive credits in film, television and video games include Star Trek: Picard, writing the music for all sixteen seasons of Apex Legends; and penning the scores for both Star Wars: Jedi games, Multiversus, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, 12 Monkeys, and Unlocked, amongst over four dozen other projects. The live service games he has scored (Apex, Multiversus) have over 300 million regular players worldwide. Born in 1982, at the age of eight he won a prestigious scholarship to sing in Winchester Cathedral Choir, touring the world and performing with numerous orchestras and soloists at venues such as Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall; and appearing on more than a dozen albums. He began his composing career at 19, as an assistant to Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia, Kingdom of Heaven), moving to Los Angeles from his native UK, in 2001 GORDY HAABGordy Haab is a multi-award-winning film, video game, and television composer who has written music for many well-known titles, including Star Wars: Squadrons, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Microsoft's Halo Wars 2, and Star Wars: Battlefront I and II, among others. In 2022, Haab was nominated for an International Film Music Critics award for his work on the feature film My Country, My Parents, and was bestowed the inaugural “Music City Maestro” Award by the Society of Composers and Lyricists for his ongoing support of the Nashville music and recording community. In October 2022, his music from Star Wars: Battlefront I and II was featured as part of DICE's 30th anniversary concert series and performed by the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. Haab is known for his unsurpassed understanding of the orchestra as well as his unique ability to blend contemporary and traditional sounds into one – oftentimes conceiving and creating brand new musical instruments to feature in his scores. He has recorded and conducted his music with orchestras from all around the world, including The London Symphony Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, The Nashville Symphony and the Hollywood Studio Orchestra.

The third season of Star Trek: Picard had a lot on its shoulders: It was the final season of its show, as well as a bombastic, blockbuster-level bow for the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For its first two seasons, Patrick Stewart and the showrunners shied away from Starfleet uniforms and shiny utopias, and Jeff Russo's score reflected that (as we've discussed with him on this very show). But showrunner Terry Matalas had a different vision in mind for Season 3: Celebrate the crew whose adventures captured generations of fans, with a big, brassy sendoff meant to give them the finale they finally deserved.   And that they did, thanks to the tireless work of composers Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann. Together, they handled hours of big orchestral sounds, crafting new themes for ships and characters like the Titan and Jack Crusher. At the same time, there was decades' worth of callbacks to Star Trek's musical legacy that needed acknowledgment, from Jerry Goldsmith's TNG theme to the movie-esque sweep of James Horner and Dennis McCarthy. Through plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, they pulled it off, crafting an immense body of work that fit snugly within the legacy of Star Trek while incorporating musical Easter eggs big and small into its superstructure.   This week on the podcast, Barton and Wiedmann join me for a nice long chat about the hectic production process, the many Trekkian cues they had to blend together, and the value of having creative collaborators (like Matalas) who know exactly what they want.   You can find Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann at their official websites.   The entirety of Picard Season 3 is available for streaming on Paramount+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

After apprenticing under John Frizzell (Legion, Whiteout), Frederik Wiedmann has maintained multiple careers as an orchestrator, mixer, and composer of several graphic horror films, including Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007), The Hills Run Red (2009), and Mirrors 2 (2010), but with Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2011-2012), he’s written a multi-thematic, almost classic orchestral score, with organically blended electronics and sound samples. Special thanks to Frederik Wiedmann for discussing his latest work, and Beth Krakower at CineMedia Promotions. Volumes 1 and 2 of Green Lantern: The Animated Series are available from La-La Land Records.
