South African energy issues need joint effort - Minerals Council

South Africa's energy conundrum will require a concerted effort by both industry and government, Minerals Council South Africa said. Speaking to Mining Weekly Online on the sidelines of Paydirt's Africa Downunder conference, in Perth, Minerals Council CEO Roger Baxter said that the solution to solving South Africa's energy crisis is unlocking "massive" private sector investment. “In the mining sector we have 6.5 GW of [energy] projects that we're going to bring on stream over the next three to four years. Some 300 MW of that has already been registered as special industrial projects. “We are forming real partnerships to drive the changes. Sitting and whinging, telling the government that it is not doing its job is not helping. We are getting our hands dirty, rolling up our sleeves and really starting to drive the agenda,” Baxter said. The energy investment by mining companies is worth an estimated R1-billion, Baxter told delegates at the conference. For its part, government-owned Eskom is estimated to have 47 GW of installed capacity, accounting for about 60% of the installed capacity in the entire sub-Saharan Africa, however, Baxter noted that energy availability from Eskom was currently less than 60%. However, Baxter noted that there was positive movement from the government of South Africa's side to address the energy issues, with major reforms under way, including the removal of a licence cap, the decline in registration time from four months to just 18 days at the National Energy Regulator, the establishment of a national electricity committee, and proposed amendment to the Electricity Regulation Act. South African Mineral Resources and Energy Deputy Minister, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane told delegates at the conference that that the government was paying "particular attention" to South Africa's energy infrastructure, noting that the national energy fleet was coming to the end of its life. “This has posed a risk to the mining sector, given the fact that it is an intensive energy user. To this end, we have implemented some reforms in the energy policy and regulation. This includes the introduction of power producers that are known as IPPs and the removal of the cap on embedded generation, which will allow the mining companies to generate power for their own use without a licence when making strides in South Africa. “This has enabled a pipeline of over 80 renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 6.5 GW initiated by the mining sector.” Nkabane said that as part of these reforms, the government was also progressing the unbundling of Eskom, with the process at an advanced stage. “We're making strides again, in terms of transforming the sector to ensure that there is energy security in the country and there is no energy poverty. This will see Eskom being unbundled into three independent business units, which is the generation, the transmission as well as distribution. All these reforms are geared towards ensuring that we are reclaimed South Africa's position as the mining investment and development destination.”

Stoney Baloney | A Narrated Cannabis Column

Friendship, it's potentially the most imperative virtue in life. Because without some form of reflective exchange with another living animal, it's nearly impossible to apply meaning to our existence.  In fact, since our great grandfather times a hundred Erg the Nomad wandered the plains foraging for mushrooms and crunchy insects wiggling under Woolley Mammoth dung, knowing that another bone-wielding human had your hairy back has always been what keeps us going. Be it a person or a pet, we need to feel as if there is another organism with eyes that finds our existence worthwhile.  And one true measure of a real friend is a person who makes the attempt to reciprocate the association. Which often determines the varying levels of friendship.  First, you have your pretend friends. These are the ones who are around because you have something to offer. It isn't based on leveling up as much as it is on climbing the social ladder or making their lives better by what you can provide to them. There are the remote friends. These are the pals you communicate with once a year or so, just to re-establish that you still have a connection that is important, albeit superseded by current circumstances that require more immediate attention.  And then there's your tribe. These are the peeps on speed dial with whom you counsel for social activities and relationship opinions. They are in your periphery, sharing meals and outings on grassy plots on sunny days, deeply involved in the events of your development, helping to navigate the course of your journey. They are responsible and dependable, having stood the test of time, supportive and aware of some deep secrets. Patrick Sullivan, MD, and his son Jason Sullivan, MD are two orthopedic surgeons here at DMOS. In this Joint Effort episode, the father-son duo chat about their upbringing, family life, education, and even share a few funny stories! Learn about how Dr. Jason Sullivan followed in his father's footsteps in becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Jason Sullivan explains, “When I was growing up, you never said, ‘hey, you need to do orthopedics.' I think I just saw a pretty good career, and I thought it would keep me intellectually stimulated.” Dr. Patrick Sullivan stated the importance of making your own career choices, “It's very interesting that you made the independent choice, and you're happy with it like I was; I'm happy and proud of you for that. I think everyone has to find their own way to what they want to do.” Over their time at DMOS, they have had cases where they could combine their skillset and work alongside one another. Working together has allowed the two to learn from each other's surgical experiences and expertise. Dr. Jason Sullivan exclaimed, “That to me was a heck of a lot of fun.” They both enjoy the times they have gotten to work together and hope to do more cases together in the future.  As for the next generation of Sullivans, is orthopedics in the cards? Dr. Jason asked Dr. Patrick if he would encourage any of his children to do orthopedics. “Here's what I'd tell them to do. Find out what you're good at. Try a whole bunch of things; see where your natural interests, skills, and intellect range is. Then find a career in that sphere that allows you independence and to be sort of self-employed, so you have more control of your world and enjoy what you do.”  The Sullivan's have a combined total of over 40 years at DMOS. Their dedication to providing the highest quality of orthopedic care and their support from one another is extraordinary. We dedicate this Father's day episode to all the wonderful dads in the world. Happy Father's Day!

A Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by DC Films, Village Roadshow Pictures, Bron Creative, and Joint Effort, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast had signed on by August. Principal photography lasted from September to December 2018 and took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark. Joker was the first live-action Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content. Joker premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019—where it won the Golden Lion, the festival's highest prize—and was released in the United States on October 4, 2019. The film polarized critics; while Phoenix's performance was praised, the dark tone, portrayal of mental illness, and handling of violence was met with a divided response. Joker also generated concerns of inspiring real-world violence, with the movie theater where the 2012 Aurora, Colorado mass shooting occurred during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises refusing to show the film. -------------------- FOLLOW US -------------------- NADIA SAWALHA & FAMILY https://www.instagram.com/nadiasawalhaandfamily.com http://www.twitter.com/nadiasawalha For more movie news follow: POPCORN JUNKIES: https://www.instagram.com/popcornjunkiesmovieclub/ ------------------------------------ BUSINESS ENQUIRIES ------------------------------------ For business enquiries contact: michelle@doghouse-media.co.uk --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Hoodoo Gurus: Hoodoo Gurus (who are often referred to as the Gurus by fans) are a 4-piece Australian band who are deemed as legends of their time. Reaching iconic status in 2007 when inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, the Gurus were acknowledged as being one of the most inventive, lyrically smart and exciting bands of their time. The style is an eclectic fusion of 60s power pop, wild garage punk, hard rock and psychedelic kitsch, and this crazy combo is what helps to cement their iconic, unique style. Hailing from Sydney, they formed in 1981, fronted by legend Dave Faulkner, (songwriter, lead singer and guitarist) and have since seen many changes to their lineup, however have never travelled far from their roots. Current members include Brad Shepherd, Nik Reith and Richard Grossman. The Gurus have a stash of critically acclaimed singles under their belt, such as My Girl, Come Anytime, and Miss Freelove 69, but their biggest hit single, What’s My Scene, which was later modified to be ‘What’s My Team’ , which became the NRL’s year 2000 theme song. A lengthy hiatus followed their early success, and the band reformed following the success of ‘What’s My Team’ , with the publicity rejuvenating their career, opening them up to opportunities such as playing at the 2006 NRL Grand Final, 2007 SXSW, Splendour In The Grass and the Meredith Music Festival. The Hoodoo Gurus have still got it, and will forever remain as classic Aussie icons. Back when 4ZZZ started in 1976, a group of volunteers at the station led by John Stanwell started curating shows around Brisbane called the ‘Joint Effort’. Hoodoo Gurus played one of the Joint Effort’s back in the mid-80’s and when plans were underway for organising a Joint Effort show to celebrate 4ZZZ’s 40th Birthday, the Gurus were at the top of the list to invite back to headline the show. Recorded at the Hamilton Hotel as part of the Return Of The Joint Effort show in Brisbane on the 29th of August, 2015. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic.
