Can This Work In A Small Church?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2024 19:21

This is the first of two very special episodes that we're doing in back-to-back weeks, instead of our usual bi-weekly schedule. In January 2024, Karl and Shelley Vaters were honored by their home church as they ended 31 years on the pastoral staff—25 years as lead pastor, six years as teaching pastor. This, and the next episode of The Church Lobby are taken from that Sunday service. This episode features an on-stage interview in which Gary Garcia (the current lead pastor), asks Karl about their time at Cornerstone. It's a helpful look at the value of longevity for the pastor and the church and some insights into how they were able to navigate a healthy pastoral transition. Be sure to stick around after the interview for some of Karl's important takeways for people in ministry. You can watch the entire service on the CornerstoneFV YouTube channel, here. On episode 221, I hosted a Raw Materials Supply Chain Update Roundtable with Mike Standish of Radical Polymers, Jill Cavano of Scranton Associates, John Zibrita of Zibex, and Gary Garcia of Masters Company. We talked about Supply Chain issues, and how it is affecting the water treatment industry. Since then, I've received numerous questions about something that is concerning many water treaters right now: Price Increases. People in the industry are concerned with the number of Price Increases we are getting hit with right now in all areas of business from Asset Control, Labor Raises, Business, and Workforce Growth, to Transportation, Insurance and Utilities; how should we pass those Price Increases to our customers, and what are the consequences of passing on those Price Increases to them? Today, I am going to talk about what happens if we don't increase our prices, the economics of pricing your services, and how to have a “Price Increase” conversation with a customer.  Bottom line: Today we're going to talk through the economics of Price Increases. Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client.  -Trace    Timestamps:  Pinks and Blues and new events [2:00] Thinking On Water With James [08:52] Price Increases: The questions on everybody's mind [10:40] Simple Economics: Why you should increase your Pricing [15:02] When your customer objects to a Price Increase [18:50] The Supply Chain Materials Shortage Issue [19:58] How to initiate a Price Increase conversation with a customer  [25:15] Why keeping a good relationship with a customer is important  [30:48] How to create a Win-Win for you and your customer [35:20] Episodes to listen to get more information about the Supply Chain issue [40:57]   Thinking On Water With James: In this week's episode, we're thinking about the dangers of our job and how we can be safer. Industrial Water Treatment has inherent dangers that must be acknowledged and managed. From hot, pressurized boilers, acids, and caustics to confined spaces, energized equipment, and environmental exposure. Do you think about your safety every day? You are the first line of defense in your own safety, after all. What resources do you have to not only learn about any dangers but also how to manage them? Take this week to think about your safety and the impact not just upon you but upon those around you as well.    Quotes: “When we're talking about Price Increase, we are not talking about price-fixing. We're talking about responding to the market and to all of the things that happen.” - Trace Blackmore “(Losing a business due to a Price Increase) might not be the worst thing depending on how you're looking at the full picture.” - Trace Blackmore “We need to look at making sure we're doing regular Price Increases just to keep up with all increased prices.”- Trace Blackmore “If the company is not making a profit, we are not in a healthy company.” - Trace Blackmore “Strong companies are constantly evaluating how much money is coming in, how much money is going out, and is that acceptable with what the company has to make.” - Trace Blackmore “We are in a Supply Chain breakdown right now.” - Trace Blackmore “If the material is not available, the Price is going to go up.” - Trace Blackmore “Anything that is not a win on both the client's and customer's side will not work long term successfully.” - Trace Blackmore “We have to make sure that we get a win so that we can help our customer win too.” - Trace Blackmore “The more information your customer knows, the better decisions they can make.” - Trace Blackmore “When Prices go up, a healthy company needs to increase their Pricing.” - Trace Blackmore “We have to make a profit in order to stay in business. Welcome to the water treaters' favorite podcast, Scaling UP H2O! Let me introduce you to a friend of mine,  Garret “Gary” Garcia. Gary is one of those people who has an incredible amount of knowledge and over the years has been incredibly generous about sharing what he knows. In today's episode, we're going to cover everything from new technologies in the water treatment industry to the things a company should consider before they start blending their own product and also keeping up with government regulations. It truly is a great episode! For those who don't know Gary, he is the Technical Director for Masters Company, Inc., and if you've never heard of them please check them out. MCI is a private label manufacturer to the water treatment industry encompassing test kits, reagents, blending as well as specialty chemical distribution. LiquiLogic formulates and manufactures super concentrated water treatment products with No Touch dispensing systems.  Gary has been involved in AWT (Association of Water Technologies) for more than 30 years serving on several committees as well as currently being Special Project Sub-Committee Chair and Supplier Representative to the AWT Board of Directors.   Bottom line: Gary knows what it takes to make great products for water treatment professionals. He discusses that a strong bond is a must-have necessity if a team like Don Lugo's wants to play against the Division One schools. Matthew furthers David's point on brotherhood, and tells us that there was really no chemistry last year and that costed them big when it came to things like League and CIF. The Varsity Baseball team is off to an amazing start with a 4-1 season thus far, with their next game against Chaffey on March 5th. These captains overall have seen a big improvement when comparing their previous season to this years, and they hope to just make it to the end of CIF with some rings to show for it. Having these captains focused on improving the next generation and training next year's seniors, they can only hope that next year's season will keep improving from the last. Sit down and listen this week as Gary and Diego sit down with Branden Garcia and discuss what it's like to be in a wrestling CIF tournament. A long, tiring day for all wrestlers; this is where all the training comes to it's peak. Doubts start clouding your mind, as you start to wonder "Did I make weight?", "Did I train hard enough?", "Will I be good enough?". These are all questions that go through a mind of a wrestler on a big day such as the Mt. Baldy League finals. As other sports you can rely on other athletes to try and pick up the slack where you might be falling behind; wrestling is all on you as an individual and requires all the strength that you have within yourself. A wrestler can go days without eating or drinking just to make weight. The training process for a wrestler is brutal, and only few can actually do it. All this training is worth it when at the end of the day, the wrestlers can say they took home a victory for their school and the athletes around them. Senior Branden Garcia, in the 220 weight class, took on competitors from Chino and Montclair as he entered the finals. These victories take these wrestlers all the way to CIF tournament bracket. Pac-Man is a maze arcade game developed and released by Namco in 1980. As I can remember when I was a little boy. I played Pac-Man on the arcade machine, at the laundromat and also at the Arcade game section of many malls. Puck Man was changed to Pac Man. Puck Man was its original Japanese title.- How to play Pac Man? The player controls Pac Man with a joy stick or arcade game controller. While moving Pac Man the mission is for Pac Man to eat all of the dots on the inside of the different enclosed mazes while avoiding the four colored ghost monsters. The ghost monsters names are Blinky(red), Pinky(pink), Inky(cyan), and Clyde(orange). When Pac Man eats the large flashing dots called power pellets the ghost monsters turn blue, allowing Pac Man to eat them for bonus points. Eating a certain number of dots in a level will cause a bonus item, usually in the form of a fruit to appear and then Pac Man eats these different fruits for bonus points. Also.- Pac Man's origin. A man name Toru Iwatani developed the game in 1979. He had a vision and desire to create a game that would appeal to women as well as men. Since most of the video games at that time were war or sports themed. His inspiration was the image of a pizza with a slice removed and then he thought kuchi the Japanese symbol meaning mouth. This became our today Pac Man. The in the game characters were made to be cute and colorful to appeal to the younger players(the children). The original Japanese title of Puck Man was derived from the official character's hockey puck shape.- Pac Man is a widespread critical and commercial success. The game is important and influential, and it is commonly listed as one of the greatest video games of all time. The success of the game led to many sequels, merchandise, and two television series, as well as a hit single titled, "Pac Man Fever" released in 1981 by the American musical duo Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia. The Pac Man video game franchise remains one of the highest grossing and best selling game series of all time, generating more than $14 billion in revenue as of 2016 and $43 million in sales combined. The character of Pac Man is the mascot and flagship icon of Bandai Namco Entertainment and has the highest brand awareness of any video game character in North America.- In closing out! Let us all continue to enjoy playing Pac Man. Pac Man doesn't care! He keeps on eating. Waka! Waka! Waka! -Waka! Waka! Waka!

Coming from Norco, to Roosevelt, and then finally Don Lugo; Muro's basketball career has been nothing but eventful and always moving. He compares staff and coaches from each school, describing differences in environment and play style (as each coach as his own). Caleb details the grit of what it takes to captain and help his fellow players on the court as a Junior, and if there is any downfalls of not being a Senior captain. He also goes in-depth on his setbacks as a player, being diagnosed with seizure disorder, and what it takes to overcome such a staggering crutch as an athlete. Diego Cruz asks him how Kobe Bryant was an inspiration to him and his play style, and what Caleb took from Kobe's on-the-court strategies and applied it to his own game. He quotes the game in 2013, where Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles's tendon, but still threw free throws for the team to try and lead them to victory. Join Diego Cruz and Gary Garcia, Quest New’s Sports Editor and number one Sports Writer, as they sit down and stack the deck (summarize) for every sports game that happened Monday through Wednesday and as they make their predictions for the upcoming games on Thursday and Friday. Sit down and listen this week as they summarize the devastating season for Girl’s Water Polo thus far, Tre Jacobs make a break through in Boy’s Basketball’s pre-season, and the upcoming wrestling tournament this weekend. Gary elaborates on the slow start for the Girl’s Water Polo team as they have had a 1-3 losing season thus far. With all the seniors from last year gone, the team looks to rebuild their team with all new up and coming players. Almost all areas of sports go through this transitional period, but building that gratitude and brotherhood (in this case sisterhood) is a way to have passion for the game in each player as they have this love and bond for one another and the game itself. Moving onto the pre-season for Boy’s Basketball, Junior Varsity player and “Jock of All Trades” very own host Diego Cruz talks the struggles on the court this year and the breakout, transfer star of Tre Jacobs. With an average of 10.7 each game, Jacobs overtakes the previous season’s highest scorer of Dylan Manos. To wrap up the episode, Gary and Diego go in detail about the games of Girl’s soccer. With this week’s games both being played in the rain, the Don Lugo Girl’s Soccer team came out in victories in the games against Summit High and Jurupa Valley. Kicking off the show this week, Gary discusses the tough loss that Boy’s Water Polo took against Culver City. In that aggressive game, Culver City beat Don Lugo (18-14). Don Lugo ended up losing the lead earlier on in the game and failed in their comeback. Diego further establishes Culver City’s aggressive play style by stating that the previous game they player before Lugo, four player got ejected from the game. Then to warm up for the wrestling season, Diego runs down the “Under the Lights” tournament bracket for this Saturday (11/9). As all the schools in the Chino Valley Unified School District (Chino High, Don Lugo, Chino Hills, and Ayala) send their best wrestlers to grip and grapple at Ayala High School on the football field; Diego and Gary discuss who could come out on top with the leading victory before season. To wrap the episode, Gary talks his excitement about Don Lugo Varsity actually making it to the CIF season. Sit down and listen this week as they give their play-by-play breakdown of the game that took place November 1, 2019 between Don Lugo’s Conquistadors and Diamond Bar’s Brahmas in the final varsity game to qualify before CIF. Gary opens up the discussion about the win-or-go home scenario for the Don Lugo Conquistadors. As over a majority of the season, the Conquistadors have faced suffocating loss after loss games while only recently picking wins against Montclair High School on October 18 and against Chino High School in the Milk Can 2019 on October 25. So after retaining the Milk Can for the fourth year in a row yet also suffering a heavy and sad season, did the Conquistadors have what it takes to defeat the Diamond Bar Brahmas? A back and forth game that contained much needed defense and offense between the two teams. Explaining the plays that took place each quarter, what the players did right and what the players did wrong. Not only critiquing the players on the field, but also critiquing their predictions of what they thought was going to happen; as made on Jock of All Trades – The Deal. Isolating players such as Mackenzie Aguilera with a two time-out decoy, the Don Lugo Conquistadors ended up picking up the victory. If you answered ‘Pauly Shore’ – you won! 20 years ago, Pauly Shore was at the height of his career. 20 years ago, Gary Garcia started youth ministry at his current church. Gary’s still there. Pauly – well.. he was sighted in Florida.. Gary spends time with the team, answering questions, sharing wisdom and helping veterans and rookies alike what it means to make “the Long Haul.” Here are a few links to look for from the show: “Hoops of Hope” was this week’s “Hood Ornament” for the show.
