If you have a child who seems to fight sleep with every ounce of their being . . . you're not alone. While some kids easily drift off, others — especially those who are highly sensitive, alert, and intense — struggle with winding down, leaving parents exhausted and desperate for solutions. In this episode of Chick Chat, I sit down with sleep expert Macall Gordon to discuss why traditional sleep advice often fails these “livewire” children and what parents can do instead. With years of research in infant mental health and temperament-based sleep strategies, Macall shares science-backed insights to help parents navigate bedtime battles with compassion, patience, and a plan that actually works. Who is Macall Gordon? Macall Gordon has a masters degree in applied psychology from Antioch University in Seattle with a research-based specialization in infant mental health, sleep advice, and parenting culture. She also has a bachelor of science in human biology from Stanford University. Macall has conducted and presented her own research on temperament, sleep, and parenting advice at infant and child development conferences around the world and she is a certified Gentle Sleep Coach as well as a featured provider on the women's telehealth platform, Maven Clinic. She is also the author of the new book Why Won't You Sleep?!: A Game-Changing Approach for Exhausted Parents of Nonstop, Super Alert, Big Feeling Kids. Macall comes to this work because she had two sensitive, alert, intense children, and she didn't sleep for 18 years. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, I chat with Macall about sleep strategies for children with alert temperaments. We know that every child is different. However, when it comes to sleep, parents of highly sensitive kids aren't always prepared for what bedtime might bring. That's why we had to get the scoop from Macall. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: Please tell us about your journey with getting your children to sleep. What's a “livewire,” and how do these temperament traits impact sleep and parenting? How does current sleep training information and research fail to consider temperament? What are some necessary workarounds to consider in working on sleep with "livewires"? Tell us about your “big four strategies” for sleep success. How can parents create a step-by-step plan for their child using a time-tested, evidence-based approach that doesn't require leaving children alone to cry? We know that sleep training (or sleep teaching) can be exhausting for parents. Can you recommend any tips for tired parents going through the process? What are some of the perks of having a "livewire" child? Sleep challenges with highly sensitive and intense kids can be beyond frustrating, but understanding how temperament affects sleep is a game-changer. As Macall Gordon explained, these children aren't choosing to resist sleep. Rather, their perceptiveness, persistence, and big emotions make it harder for them to settle. With the right approach, parents can support their child's natural sleep needs without endless battles or forcing a method that doesn't work. We're so grateful that Macall could share her insights with us in this episode! When my child was little, one of the most common sleep training methods was the "cry it out" approach. We tried it briefly, and it felt absolutely terrible for all of us. I know many parents can relate to the feelings of desperation and overwhelm that come when a child just isn't sleeping. I wish I'd known back then about sleep coaches Macall Gordon and Kim West, also known as The Sleep Lady, who have developed a gentler, effective approach to changing sleep patterns. Their approach, based on years of research and experience with thousands of families, is especially suited for children who are more alert, intense, and persistent than their peers—and who put up a bigger fight at bedtime. Sound familiar? Then this episode is for you. In their new book, Why Won't You Sleep?! A Gamechanging Approach for Nonstop, Super-Alert, Big-Feeling Kids, Kim and Macall present a fresh take on sleep training, rooted in understanding a child's unique temperament. In our conversation, we cover common sleep struggles, misconceptions about sleep training, and why a gradual approach is empowering for both parents and children. They also share tips on setting limits for early risers and managing transitions that encourage peaceful nights. About Macall Gordon Macall is a researcher, speaker, and author specializing in the link between temperament and sleep. She has a master's degree in Applied Psychology from Antioch University, Seattle with a research-based specialization in infant mental health. About Kim West Kim West, LCSW-C is a mom of two who has been a practicing child and family social worker for over 25 years. One of the most common challenges that many of the toddler families that Linda and Jessica work with involve the intersection of sleep and potty training. Today episode is going to be SO helpful for any parent who is struggling with these sorts of difficulties. We had the good fortune to interview Alexis Granelli who is not only a fellow Gentle Sleep Coach, but also trained with Kim West as a Gentle Potty Coach. She is also a Positive Discipline Parent Educator. Alexis shares so many pearls of wisdom about potty training both as it relates to your child's readiness and how to handle those tricky potty requests at night. Lynn finally made it to an orchard this week and got to feed some goats! She's also knee-deep in studying to become a Gentle Sleep Coach to help parents sleep train their child that supports a secure attachment. She will need 3 families who are interested in sleep training their child during her course in order to be certified and these will be free of charge! You can contact Lynn through email below. This week's episode is all about birthmarks and how some birthmarks are very popular amongst people of colour. When her daughter Genevieve was born, Lynn thought she had bruised her during labour (lol). Turns out there are some specific birthmarks called Slate Gray Nevi which mimic the look of bruises to the point of possible false accusations of abuse. Genevieve's midwives documented her Slate Gray Nevi to avoid any suspicions before transferring her care to a family doctor. Lynn speaks about growing up with her own facial birthmark and shares funny stories. Check out the question and Poll if you're listening to this on Spotify! In today's episode of the Gentle Parenting Podcast, Kim West sits down with a longtime friend and certified Gentle Sleep Coach, Macall Gordon. This is Macall's second time on the podcast, to listen to her first episode all about sleep training research, head HERE. Kim and Macall sat down to discuss sleep training based on a child's temperament. They speak specifically about the alert, high-wired and high-energy children, and how common sleep training advice can be adapted based on this type of child. They discuss: What Does Temperament Mean? Sleep Training Based on Temperament Characteristics of Hard Sleepers Connection Between and Parents and Baby's Temperament The Good Side of Your Child's Temperament Research on Sleep Training and Temperament Our favorite quotes from the episode are “to really self soothe requires motor skills, attention skills, and your child has to divert their attention, and all those things take time. When the things that are bothering your child take more attention, they need more help to settle down.” and “Pick your battles, but fight the ones you pick.” Learn More From Macall You can learn more from Macall and more about her research by connecting with her on her website, Instagram and Facebook
In this episode of The Gentle Parenting Show, Kim goes solo to break down a hot topic: no crying sleep training. While there is such a thing as gentle sleep training (check out Kim's world-renowned sleep training program HERE), there is no such thing as no crying sleep training. In this episode, Kim breaks down the three factors that affect crying while sleeping training. Factor 1: Age of Child Factor 2: Temperament of Child Factor 3: Consistency There will always be tears and frustration while trying to change behavior. But, if you pay attention to the three factors of crying, you can greatly minimize the tears. Listen to find out how each factor can help you better sleep train your child! Macall Gordon, M.A. & I discuss our common background of being Highly Sensitive People & raising our HSP - Livewire babies. Check out the resources below. Does any of this sound like your child? Big feelings? (Intensity) Energizer Bunny? (Active) Serious FOMO? (Alert) Doesn't miss a thing? (Perceptive) Never gives up? (Persistent) Super light sleeper? (Sensory Sensitive) Not a self-soother? (Reactive) Goes from zero to sixty? (Intense) if so, sleep books weren't written for you but this podcast sheds some light on useful information that you need. From Macall's website: Because of my experience as a mom of TWO livewires (who never, ever slept as babies), I really, really know what it's like to have a child who is just MORE. As a researcher and sleep coach, I've worked with so many parents in the same boat and I know they absolutely require a different approach to sleep . I have sleep strategies that work with temperament—not against it—to get everyone (yes, you, you exhausted mamas and papas) more sleep. It IS possible. In today's informative episode of the Gentle Parenting Podcast, Kim West sits down with longtime friend and certified Gentle Sleep Coach, Macall Gordon. Macall holds an MA in Applied Psychology from Antioch University, Seattle with a specialization in infant mental health, including attachment theory, the development of emotional regulation, and parenting psychology. Together, they discuss Macall's take on common sleep training research and what parents really need to look out for when dissecting common sleep training advice. They also discuss: Can parents really create life-long bad sleep habits for their children? What does self soothing mean for young children? Do certain sleep training methods cause emotional trauma? When should parents start sleep training? What facts and figures should I consider when reading sleep training research? Our favorite quote from this episode is “the amount of advice that's out there makes parents feel like they're walking among land mines and if they make one false move they've ruined their child's life. It really isn't like that with sleep, you can decide what's a problem, you can decide when to intervene and if it's working right now.” Learn More From Macall You can learn more from Macall and more about her research by connecting with her on her website, Instagram and Facebook
Nobody embarks on the journey of parenthood for its reputation for amazing sleep. Especially in the early years, conversations about sleep - or lack thereof - seem to creep into many interactions. In our previous episode, we talked about ways moms of littles can look into their diet and hormones to address sleep difficulties for themselves; now it's time we turn our intention towards those little heartthrobs who steal our sleep just because they're little and parenting is hard. For guidance, we turned to sleep expert Marie-Eve Gagnon, owner of Slumbertime Solutions. She is a certified Gentle Sleep Coach and helps families with kids 0-6 get the sleep everyone (moms! dads! kids!) needs through her consultations, group sessions, and online classes. We were amazed to learn that bedtime should be 20-30 minutes, start to finish. Say whaaaat? Learn about how that happens and more in the episode! Learn more about Marie-Eve Gagnon on the Slumbertime Solutions website, Facebook page, or Instagram account. We also talked about: Katie has nervous feelings about her grad school application (spoiler alert: she recently received the good news!) Katie is not a Kardashian Lee Ann cooks things in ovens— Interview — Marie-Eve shares with us some of the background to what inspired her to start Slumbertime SolutionsWe learn about bedtime stalling - what that looks like (VERY FAMILIAR TERRITORY HERE) and how to redirect it Changing sleep habits should see a difference in a few weeks, in general, according to Marie-Eve We talk about the importance of kids testing boundaries and how to able to respond Marie-Eve gives hope to parents that there are many ways to address sleep, beyond the commonly-known options of cry-it-out or wait-it-out. She says most people fall somewhere in the middle.— / Interview — We introduce a new segment called Solicited Advice, where you can ask us questions and we'll share your question with an answer. Anything is game! Share yours through social media (@raisingcascadia), by phone (503.893.5608), or by email (hello@raisingcascadia.com) Our Solicited Advice request was a discussion about “How do you feel about other people calling you mama?” We are both a little grossed out by companies using the term for advertising. Katie doesn't like it in general, and Lee Ann hardly registers when friends use it. And we both hate the term Lady Scientist! Love the term “friends” for many reasons. Another new segment! Send us your Ups and Downs of parenthood by telling us a story of something awesome or something less so by sending us a 30-60 second voicemail at the number above, or by shooting us a note through the usual methods!
