Kids. What is wrong with kids these days? They're not perfect like we were. It's musicals month and we've arrived at a 60s musical and the only musical Bob already saw prior to this month. This musical, inspired by Elvis getting drafted into the army, is a pop culture spoof and a launchpad for a young Ann-Margret who mesmerizes in this 1963 George Sidney adaptation of “BYE BYE BIRDIE”. A popular singer gets to kiss a small tawn girl in small town Ohio and if this works out then 5 or 6 people could be set for life! It's an extensive cast that also stars Dick Van Dyke as a speed dealer, Janet Leigh as a withered old marm, Bobby Rydell who is being cucked by a teen idol despite being one in real life, Paul Lynde as the perfect father and Maureen Stapleton as the perfect mother. It also stars Ed Sullivan as himself. A crafty musical comedy that rightly deserves its place as one of the great teen movies and the best movie ever featuring a turtle high on speed. JFK would be dead later this same year. Just thought I'd mention that.

PAL JOEY COMPOSER: Richard Rodgers LYRICIST: Lorenz Hart BOOK: John O'Hara SOURCE: John O'Hara's short stories (1930s) DIRECTOR: George Abbott CHOREOGRAPHER: Robert Alton PRINCIPLE CAST: Leila Ernst (Linda), Gene Kelly (Joey), Vivienne Segal (Vera),  OPENING DATE: Dec 25, 1940 CLOSING DATE: Nov 29, 1941 PERFORMANCES: 374 SYNOPSIS: John O'Hara's short stories tell the tale of Chicago huckster Joey Evans who has dreams of opening up his own nightclub. Penniless, he seduces Vera, a wealthy socialite, while at the same time stringing along the naïve lovestruck Linda.  John O'Hara's adaptation of his own serialized characters with Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart engrossed audiences in the disreputable universe of its titular character. Pal Joey's unsentimental treatment of nightclub life and uncensored sex appeal were controversial and divided the opinions of critics and audiences in 1940. Though a relative success by contemporary standards, it was only decades later that the score resurfaced in the zeitgeist thanks to hit versions of “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered”. A new generation of popular recordings and a studio album led to a revival which, thanks to the developing scope of narratives told through musical theatre, was warmly received. Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

SHOW BOAT COMPOSER: Jerome Kern LYRICIST: Oscar Hammerstein II BOOK: Oscar Hammerstein II SOURCE: Edna Ferber's novel Show Boat (1926) DIRECTOR: Zeke Colvan, Oscar Hammerstein II CHOREOGRAPHER: Sammy Lee PRINCIPLE CAST: Jules Bledsoe (Joe), Howard Marsh (Gaylord), Helen Morgan (Julie) OPENING DATE: Dec 27, 1927 CLOSING DATE: May 04, 1929 PERFORMANCES: 572 SYNOPSIS: Spanning fifty years, a show boat, The Cotton Blossom, goes up and down the Mississippi River, chronicling the lives of the boat's performers, owners, and stagehands. As American society changes, so do the ideologies of those on the Cotton Blossom. Show Boat departed from the standard fare of musical comedies, comic operetta, and vaudeville revues, definitively envisioning a style of musical theatre in which dances, song, and dialogue served a unified dramatic arch. The serious subject matter, dealing with racism and unrequited love, was also a departure from the frivolous subject matter on musical theatre stages, establishing a new genre of musical storytelling. Susan Stroman, the choreographer for the 1994 revival, delves into the impetus behind musicalizing Edna Ferber's novel, the collaboration between Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, Florenz Ziegfeld's concern about the show's success, and the reaction to the story in the 21st Century. Susan Stroman is a five-time Tony Award-winning director and choreographer most known for Crazy For You, Contact, The Scottsboro Boys, and The Producers. Her work has been honored with Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and a record six Astaire Awards. She directed and choreographed The Producers, winner of a record-making 12 Tony Awards including Best Direction and Best Choreography. 00h 00'00" Old man river 00h 02'19" Presentación 00h 04'17" Cabecera 00h 05'24" Inicio 00h 05'57" Obertura 00h 12'25" Cotton Blossom 00h 18'23" Captain Andy's ballyhoo / Hey Julie... 00h 25'05" Where's the mate for me? / Make believe 00h 34'16" Old man river 00h 40'34" Can't help lovin' that man 00h 48'10" Life upon the wiked stage 00h 52'07" 'Til good luck comes my way 00h 54'50" Misery comin' around 01h 02'10" Looks like a swell 01h 08'22" You are love 01h 15'46" Oh tell me did you ever 01h 22'12" At the fair 01h 26'56" Why do I love you? 01h 36'17" Make believe (Reprise) 01h 38'08" Bill 01h 42'53" Can't Help Lovin that Man (Reprise) 01h 44'56" I might fall back on you 01h 48'46" After the ball 01h 52'38" Hey feller 01h 55'30" Old man river (Reprise) 01h 58'00" You are love (Reprise) 02h 00'05" Why do I love you 02h 04'05" Finale ultimo 02h 06'52" Curiosidades 02h 08'51" I have the room above her 02h 13'55" Ah, still suits me 02h 18'40" Can't help lovin’ that man (Ava Gardner) 02h 22'50" Nobody else but me

We thought to ourselves, you know what, 39 standard tellings of Shakespeare just aren’t enough for us - we are going to add some BONUS content! And so here we are on our tenth episode bringing you a taste of the modern bard. The two shows we watched this week are re-tellings of last episode’s Taming of the Shrew, and I have to say these two movies are some of my favourites. One is a classic MGM Studio 1950’s era movie musical and the other is a classic Hollywood 1990’s era teen movie. Kelly decides to show the magazine boys what they are missing. She creates a fake identity for herself, pretending that a story about a young woman's wild ways is actually about herself. Girl-Lure's lecherous editor, Sir Hubert, and his suave editor, Ric Colby, like the concept but aren't sure they trust the facts. Kelly tries to fool them by staging an orgy in her apartment building, asking friendly tenants to go along with her scheme. Sgt. Hooker of the vice squad does not feel she is fooling, however, and places Kelly under arrest. Ric comes to her rescue. But when her hoax is revealed, he decides to get revenge by insisting that Kelly pose for a provocative layout for the magazine to prove she is as wild as she claims. By the time his car and her motorcycle meet head-on in the end, they're in love. George Sidney had previously made Bye Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas with Ann Margret. Sidney says the script for Viva Las Vegas had been written in eleven days in order to meet a commitment and The Swinger was similar.  Sidney called the film "a wild, outrageous 'in', what's-happening-in-the-world-today kind of picture. Even before director George Sidney and stars Judy Garland, John Hodiak and Angela Lansbury finished shooting 1946's The Harvey Girls, it's signature song, On The Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe, was burning up the music charts in the summer and fall of 1945. No fewer than six artists recorded the song, the most successful being the version created by Johnny Mercer and the Pied Pipers.  It's no wonder than that the scene in the film that introduces the song is one of the longest and most complex musical numbers in motion picture history.  Dan and Vicky jump on the Harvey Girls train to discuss the delightful musical that cemented Judy Garland as a bona fide musical movie star.  In the recently seen section of the podcast your hosts talk about the ABC special Live in Front of a Studio Audience: All in the Family and The Jeffersons, Dario Argento's Dracula, Long Shot, 2018's Mom & Dad, and the Lifetime TV's dud 2014 take on Flowers in the Attic.   Have a listen to Hot Date 89: The Harvey Girls and leave us some feedback.  Visit our website at hotdatepod.com

Parker's interference with production, and muses before diving into Song of the Week, in which all three decades of Elvis' career are featured as Ryan heads down the bayou to find some "crawfish," Gurdip "slowly but surely" makes his way to the 60s, and Justin "just pretends" a 1970 recording was a bigger hit than it really was. Justin & Gurdip are joined by Ryan Droste for a lively discussion of 1964's MGM film "Viva Las Vegas." Does the fiery chemistry between its leads and traditional musical lineage with director George Sidney help it hold up as one of Elvis' better films, or has the dated acting and weak plotting been overlooked for too many years? This episode's discussion (including Songs of the Week) will be concluded in TCBCast 37.
