Live from the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting!ACAT has become a tradition for us. We've gone every year since we launched and always look forward to it. This year's event, the 18th, was no exception. Plenty of awesome cask beers and great people. It was actually pretty packed, which was nice to see with all the negative talk about craft beer and beer festivals. In keeping with tradition we sat down with the event organizer, Owen Ogletree of Brewtopia Events. We chatted about cask ale and why you'll sometimes see "Ale, Beer, and Stout" mentioned together as though they are distinct things. (They are, or they were.) We talk about beer foam, lacing, and how fests like ACAT inspire homebrewers.Georgia Craft Brewers Guild executive director Joseph Cortez sits down with us to talk beer laws and the current bill up for consideration, knows as The FOAM Act, SB163 would provide various relief for brewers in relation to self-distribution, sales limits, franchise law, and direct donations to charities. There is a lot of uncertainty in the American beer industry these days, especially among the smaller breweries. In what is both a cautionary tale and one of optimism, Sean O'Keefe of Pontoon Brewing in Georgia is here today to talk about how his brewery was forced to close and to furlough employees.Earlier this month the brewery put up a social media post announcing that it needed to close. This was necessary, owners said because one of it's main distributors had not paid them for beer delivered. O'Keefe has not publicly identified the distributor, citing on-going litigation as the reason. The brewery has been a vibrant part of the Georgia Beer scene for years now, focusing on big boozy imperial stouts and messing around with adjuncts. It's also making more mainstream beers that can appeal to a wider audience. It hasn't always been easy, but the brewery has grown, and O'Keefe is candid about what has been happening behind the scenes to get to this point, and how fragile it can all be. Right now the brewery is looking for investors and looking for a path forward. There seems to be a lot of announcements these days about breweries closing and it puts a spotlight on all of the facets that go into running a successful business, and how even one piece out of sync can hurt the whole brewery. What's up, party people? Dry County Brewing Co. is about the celebrate their 6th anniversary. We've known founder Trey Sinclair since the brewery was just a dream. Well, mostly. We met Trey when he was contract brewing a couple beers and spreading the word about them around his hometown. When the brewery was just being built we stopped by for a preview. Check it out right here.... https://youtu.be/_VeAUJv2th4 Since our preview way back in 2016 DCBC has expanded to offer spirits and cider along with their brews and they're about to move to a fancy new location. On the spirit side they've got frozen cocktails in the taproom and a line of RTDs (that's "ready to drink" canned cocktails) that are extremely popular. Trey joined us and brought along Director of Hoperations Winn Chastain and Head Brewer Ryan Polk. They shared some of their beers and cocktails as we bitched more about seasonal creep, pondered pairings for their Lechuza line of Mexican lagers, discussed the growing trend back towards more West Coast(ish) IPAs and discussed the agave shortage. There's some tasty stuff coming out of Dry County Brewing. Check 'em out.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hanging out with Cherry Street Brewing and The Real DJ Jelly Cherry Street Brewing's original location in Cumming, GA isn't far from Atlanta. But city folk aren't big on leaving their circle so Cherry Street was somewhat of a hidden treasure in Georgia beer for a while. Us folks out here in the 'burbs can be scary, ya know. The opening of a 2nd location in Alpharetta put them closer to the masses, and within a distance more people weren't too scared to visit. Their beer is worthy of the trip and every bit as good as some of the best in Atlanta proper. Plus, you can get some killer chicken tenders at their Cumming location or the best fish and chips I've had in the Metro at their Halcyon location. Take the trip, order the fish, try several beers. It'll be worth it. Director of Sales and long time friend of the show Ramsay Florence joined us this week to fill us in on the latest happenings. They've recently opened a location in Chattanooga, TN and the beer laws there allow them to do some self distribution. Beer laws, what fun. We've talked about them enough in the past we'll move on this time. Ramsay talks about some of their core beers, some fun wild ales in the works, and future plans for the brewery. I misunderstood some of the notes when chatting before the show and told a dirty lie regarding news on their 4th location. Sorry about that, it's totally Ramsay's fault, though. Atlanta hip-hop icon DJ Jelly joined us in the studio as well. We met him recently at Atlantucky Brewing where he was spinning some records for the Nappy Hour. We shared a few beers and learned about his history in the Atlanta music scene. Working with LL Cool J, Goodie Mob, Bubba Sparxxx, Doug E. Fresh, and premiering some of the best acts of 90s on Atlanta radio. He even produced the classic Flo Rida's Get Low. Pairing exotic Kit Kats and Cherry Street beers We've all seen the beer and Girl Scout cookie pairings. Well we're kicking that up a notch. Brian took a trip to the local Asian market and grabbed some of their unique Kit Kat bars. Melon, Strawberry Chocolate, and Matcha. Madness. Ramsay samples each and tells us what Cherry Street beers we should pair up with them. Enjoy the classics at Ironshield Brewing We're bringing you one from our backyard this week! If you're a Georgia beer nerd you may know the name Glen Sprouse. If you don't know his name then you probably know some of his breweries. The old timers may recall Phoenix Brewing which opened in Atlanta at The Prado in 1996, slightly less older timers likely know 5 Seasons that took over the space in 2001. Sprouse was part of both of those ventures. He stepped away from brewing for a while before opening up Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA. The brewery features classic European styles including Seven Sisters Munchner Lager, which was a staple on the taps at 5 Seasons. With the addition of Jason Carroll to the team some true Irish beers have hit the taps. Carroll came to America from Ireland where he brewed at Guinness's Open Gate Brewery, among others. In addition to their Ironshield brand the brewery also contract brews under Big Kettle Brewing and expects to brew 30,0000 barrels for their customers in 2022. Welcome back Lorelei Hefeweizen Ironshield offers several returning seasonals, like Lorelei Hefeweizen which returns this weekend. (Release party March 26th, 2022) We got a sneak preview of this one and it's one fine Hef. Next up is Warhammer Maibock in late May. We're all in for that one on the name alone. Although contract brewing is the largest part of the brewery's business right now they are working diligently to grow the Ironshield brand. If you're a fan of classic ales and lagers do yourself a favor and check them out. Join us as we meet up with Chris Jones and J Ryce Martin of Georgia Beer Co. and get to know them a little better...beer, movies, and just life in general!
Almost exactly a year later, we once again found our way into a Zoom conversation with a Georgia brewer. This time around, it was former accountant James Massey who, with his wife Liz, has owned and operated Savannah's Two Tides. We were introduced to Two Tides through the fandom of BBB employee Nate Travis, who used to live in Savannah and frequent the brewery. So we begin the conversation by separating rosy second-hand memories from reality (turns out they're one in the same) and getting into Two Tides location - a 100-year old house, the downstairs of which is now occupied by the brewery's production equipment while the second floor contains their tasting room. We also learn about Georgia's EXTREMELY prohibitive and antiquated brewing laws, which explain why Savannah (somehow) is home to only six breweries while Charleston, SC - a comparative coastal city merely two hours away - claims about thirty. We also get into Two Tide's beers, particularly two styles that has never before been broached on the podcast: BEER SLUSHIES and MULLED STOUT. Finally, the old and new combine for James in yet another genre-expanding edition of The Three Bay.

Monday Night Brewing's Peter Kiley talks about taking "safe" beers to the next level Monday Night Brewing started as a Bible study group with founders Jonathan Baker, Jeff Heck, and Joel Iverson. In addition to learning the word the group brewed beer together, on Monday nights. When popularity among their friends continued to grow they realized they may on to something. Monday Night Brewing opened their original taproom in Atlanta in 2013. Brewmaster Peter Kiley tells how they brewed "safe" beers in the early days. Golden ales, a "pseudo Pilsner", a simple IPA. The beers weren't bad, they just weren't necessarily exciting, and the craft crazies demand excitement. Kiley and I had a conversation many years ago about ideas he had for beers that would be expensive to make, and he wasn't sure that craft consumers would be on board with that. In time, consumers demanded bigger, bolder, better beers, and they were willing to pay for them. One of the early breakout beers was Bourbon Barrel Drafty Kilt, a barrel-aged version of their Scotch Ale. Fast forward to 2021 and Monday Night now has three locations making amazing beers. Their original brewery and taproom on Trabert Avenue in Atlanta, The Garage on Atlanta's West End focusing on wild and barrel-aged beers, and a brewpub in Birmingham, AL. In addition to The Garage they also have the Hop Hut at their original location that focuses on bold, small batch IPAs. We also dive into the wild world with Kiley. He tells us about their coolship (dubbed The Crunkship) and what makes it special, the details of spontaneous and mixed fermentation beers, and why blending is important.

Phoning in from Atlanta, co-founder/CEO of Monday Night Brewing Jeff Heck joins the podcast! Jeff and his brewery conducted a survey (discussed in "#46: Past Wrongs Made Tannerite") that's led to him becoming a de facto leader of sorts within the beer industry as it adapts in the wake of COVID-19. We naturally go deep on both the survey and his take on the pandemic's ramifications, as well as his history in private equity (much to Matt's delight). We also talk about Monday Night's bible study roots, compare Jeff and Noah's experiences as start-ups, and dive into how Monday Night manages to stay authentic while being willing to follow trends. Above all, our conversation highlights the glaring differences in state college and Harvard educations...(Why doesn't Jeff have a podcast?)Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill
Wild Leap Brew Co. keeps jumping with new beers and distilled spirits Wild Leap Brew Co. has been making waves with a huge showing in our Best of Georgia Beer awards and being named Best New Brewery by USA Today. They've earned their honors with a constant stream of tasty beers like the Truck Chaser series of ice cream truck-inspired brews and their DIPA Alpha Abstraction series feature the same base beer but with new hops in each release, currently on Volume 11. We sat down this week at the BGR Studios with the Wild Leap crew to talk beer. Chris Elliott, Chief Brewing Officer; Rob Goldstein, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Office; and Doug Sayler, Lead Brewer all made the trip to hang out and chat over a few brews. We talk about having fun with experimental ingredients and the challenge of planning around those ingredients, their cool Three Harvest collaboration with Extreme Hops AL, an IPA utilizing hydroponically grown hops, and what that could mean for hop farming in the future. We press Goldstein on the possibility of a taproom in Atlanta and what we're going to see in Alpha Abstraction Vol. 12. In addition to brewing up beer after beer, Wild Leap has also ventured into distilled spirits. They currently offer a vodka for cocktails at the taproom and in retail 750s. Elliott tells us they're experimenting with distilling at the brewery/distillery now to see what's next. A distilled IPA, maybe? Hanging with the cool kids from Wild Leap! Rainy Day Brewery wants you to brew your own beer and explore some classic styles Amid the craze of massively-hopped IPAs and boozy, barrel-aged stouts there's a bit of a resurgence in the love of classic beer styles. Here in Georgia, and I'm sure some other places as well, we're seeing breweries focus on these drinkin' beers. Pale Ale, Pilsner, Blonde Ale, and even a simple Porter or Stout can be a great beer to relax and enjoy. No hype, no lines, no madness, just great beer. Michael Syrop and Ron Mitchell of Rainy Day Brewery share how these simple beer styles can really test a brewer's skill. There's nowhere to hide with these beers. No huge fruit additions or bourbon-barrel to mask flaws. What you brew is what you get. Rainy Day Brewery won the top Homebrewers spot in our Best of Georgia Beer 2019 survey so we invited them to join us on a show and share their tips for homebrewing. The best part of creating your own homebrew recipes is the research Ron and Michael share with us what got them started in homebrewing and why you would want to start homebrewing with the huge variety of beers available today. They share their process for creating your own homebrew recipes. My personal favorite step is all the research that goes into it. I'm all about the hard work. We also talk about new developments in brewing processes and science, experimental hops and other interesting ingredients, and a special #5thSegment on brewing for competitions. Homebrewing can be simple and relatively inexpensive to get started. It's a great way to spend a day with your friends, or a quiet day doing a solo brew. Go on and find yourself a homebrew club and dive in. BGR+RDB! Rainy Day Brewery's Ron Mitchell and Michael Syrop shared their brewing tips and their beer with Tim and Brian this week. Sampling a dozen Christmas beers as we talk holiday beer history and traditions Christmas is a wonderful time for beers. As the temperatures dip brewers release a variety of spiced stouts, piney IPAs, and Belgium sends out some amazing offerings. This is definitely one of our favorite episodes we do each year. The premise is pretty simple, we sample a dozen Christmas beers and pick our favorites. Along the way we discuss some of the history and traditions of holiday brews, share what we like to see in a Christmas beer, and learn about a 12th century law that required households to brew a beer for Christmas. (Credit to larsblog for the story on 12th century Norwegian brewing laws.) Sampling through all these brews in an hour is a bit of a task for two people so we invited our friend Brij Patel from Sprayberry Bottle Shop to help us out. Sprayberry offers an awesome selection of craft beer, whiskeys, and wine and has placed in our Best of Georgia Beer competition every year. If you're near Marietta, GA make sure to stop in and check them out. Best of Georgia Beer 2018 - The Results 2018 brought many new breweries and amazing beers to Georgia and made for some stiff competition in this year's awards. In several categories, only a handful of votes (sometimes less than 1%) separated the winners or bumped someone just out of the Top 3. Over 2,000 Georgia beer fans voted for their favorite beers, breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, bottle shops, beer fests, and even their favorite homebrewer. On this week's show, we share the results from the final voting round as we enjoy a sampling of the award-winning beers. We had several expected winners, as well as a few surprises. It's great to see so many Georgia beers and breweries making everyone's favorites list. A few notes on the awards: Only beers brewed in Georgia are eligible for an award. For the "New for 2018" categories, a brewery had to open, or a beer had to be released between Dec. 15, 2017 and Dec. 1, 2018. Winners came from two rounds. A write-in nomination round and a final voting round comprised of the Top 10 (+/-) from the nomination round. Maine Beer Co. was started with a goal to "Do What's Right" Dan Kleban and his brother David founded Maine Beer Company with a single recipe and the goal to "Do What's Right." That mantra carries through in every aspect of running their business from the beer they brew, to employee relations, and how they support and give back to their community. Dan joins us this week to talk about that philosophy and the passion he has to see it through. We enjoy a few Maine Beer Company beers as the conversation moves on to a discussion about the collapse of DME, a large brewing equipment manufacturer, and how that could be a nail in the coffin for some new brewers. Of course, we talk about brewing hoppy and balanced beers and teaching craft beer neophytes that hoppy and bitter are not the same thing. Dan also shares his passion for environmental causes and how their pledge to 1% For The Planet supports those causes, as well as the impact that brewing with local ingredients has on our environment. On tonight's Vortex Radio we have Johnny and Brandon, owners of the famous Joystick Game Bar and the new Georgia Beer Garden. These guys are probably the funniest pair of guests we’ve had. On top of that, it's the 100th episode of Vortex Radio!
A little history for you this week. Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle are with us today. Not only are they craft beer fans, they are the authors of “Atlanta Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the South” as well as “Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings and White Lightning.” Atlanta and the south have had a love/hate relationship with alcohol over the past 250 or so years. From the Whitehall Tavern opening on the West End in 1835 (back when Atlanta was called Terminus), to the mayoral election of Moses Frumwalt (of the awesomely named "Free and Rowdy" party) over Jonathan Norcross (of the "Moral Party), the early years of the region were quite...interesting. Then, with the Civil War, reconstruction, and the abolitionist movement, the region underwent many, many changes. The opening of Atlantic Brewing in 1935 (it was located on the current site of the downtown Hilton) marked a turn in Atlanta's brewing history. After its closing in the 50s, Atlanta's only brewery was a branch of Canadian beer maker Carling (now made by Molson/Coors). And when it closed in 1973, Atlanta went nearly 4 decades without a brewery until Atlanta Brewing Company (now Red Brick) opened its doors in 1993. We really needed 3 hours to get in-depth with this topic, and we definitely plan on having Mary and Ron on the show in the future. In the meantime, we highly recommend picking up their two books: “Atlanta Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the South" “Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings and White Lightning” Truck and Tap's Beers of the week: In keeping with the historical theme, we went with a couple from the vault, including: Red Brick 20th anniversary (2013) SweetWater 17th anniversary (2014) Terrapin Tiramisu Hoo (2015) And a newer one, Monday Night Brewing Blood Orange Blind Pirate IPA Headlines (sponsored by Your Pie Perimeter) Damien Schaefer, a stalwart in Georgia's craft beer scene, has passed away. What do you do when you start a brewery in a college town with two other amazing breweries in town? Create some amazing beers. Brian Roth, founder and chief bottle washer at Southern Brewing Company joined the Beer Guys in the studios. We talked about their craft beer lineup, what they learned in their year of existence, and the importance of keeping everything as local as possible....down to the yeast! Tyler Nelson, southeast rep for Green Flash and Alpine also joined us in the studio. Truck and Tap's beers of the week included some great Southern beers, including a few from their new Southern Woodpile line. In Headlines, sponsored by Your Pie - Perimeter, we talk to Alabama's newest craft beer destination, Green Bus Brewing in downtown Huntsville. We're talking bottle shops on this week's Beer Guys show! Kraig Torres, owner of Hop City joins us in studio along with Josh Doherty, specialty department manager of Harry's Farmers Market (Whole Foods).
